Abstract:Colorimetric mechanophores, which change color through force-induced covalent bond breakage, have been incorporated into polymer chains to create mechanochromic materials. However, the color change of most mechanophores is a turn-on response. In this work, we designed and synthesized a novel mechanoluminescent polymer system, PBA-SP-P(MMA-co-NBD), based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) with spiropyran (SP) as a force-activated "on/off mechanophore acceptor and nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBD) as a fluorescent donor. It is a comb polymer having NBD-bearing poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) side chains grafted onto a poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA) backbone through SP groups. The processed polymer yields a morphology having NBD-containing PMMA nanodomains embedded into a PBA matrix with SP at the interface. The distance between NBD and SP functionalities is less than 10 nm with confinement of the nanophase separation, which effectively facilitates their fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Under uniaxial stretch, the materials change color at strains as low as about 18% and undergo a green-to-red fluorescence color switch. The two colors are ratiometric, exhibiting a linear correlation with strain after the onset of mechanoactivation. The color change is greatly enhanced right after failure. The fluorescence emission performance can be well controlled through regulating the PMMA/PBA and SP/NBD ratios in the synthesis. The synthesized polymer system exhibits a good potential as an indicator in monitoring microscale cut damages.

Abstract:A series of mechanoluminescent polyurethane/siloxane hybrid polymers are synthesized through mild polycondensation and sol-gel hydrolysis process with 1,2-dioxetane as the mechanophore. With joint advantages of polyurethanes and silicon-containing polymers, these hybrid polymers exhibit good mechanical strength, high elasticity, and water resistance properties. Herein, 1,2-dioxetane acts as an autoluminescent probe of chain scission, which could emit visible and sensitive signals of the covalent bond breaking in these hybrid polymers under mechanical force. Thus, chain scission and chain slipping events during the failure process of these polymers can be effectively discriminated. The current work will offer exciting opportunities to study the failure process of hybrid polymers with unprecedented temporal and spatial resolutions.

Abstract:The development of mechanoluminescent polymers is one of the emerging and frontier subjects in the field of polymer mechanochemistry. This important research effort has been driven by the need for advanced stress probes to report rare molecular scission events that precede failure in polymers. What is already known is that the stress-induced scission of chemical bonds often plays a critical role in failure initiation state, thus, precise location and timing of chain-scission events during fracture are although difficult in practice, yet key to understanding failure mechanisms. If these rare failure initiation events could be well characterized and cast in the language of organic and physical organic chemistry, opportunities for preventing and ameliorating early failure events will be obtained, and rational molecular strategies for advanced polymeric materials will result. Stimuli-responsive polymers, that can convert mechanical force into sensitive light signal, represent a unique platform that opens the way to the detailed study of the specific molecular failure events and the macroscopic properties of polymers, and therefore, are considered as a versatile spectroscopic probe capable of sensing and mapping deformations, stresses and damage in different polymer architectures with high spatial and temporal resolutions. In this review, the strategies for the design and synthesis of mechanoluminescent polymers, and the great efforts towards the understanding of the mechanisms of such mechanically induced light from polymers, the approaches to fine-tune the optophysical properties of the light (including light intensity, colour of light emission, and the force thresholds of light), as well as the applications of mechanoluminescence to probe the failure of different polymers are comprehensively introduced. The unique features of mechanoluminescence from polymers and the advantages of these polymers as sensitive stress probes over other responsive polymers with measureable output are revealed. The progress achieved up to now is summarized, and a short outlook concerning the development of mechanoluminescent polymers is provided.

Abstract:Polyurethane elastomers have been widely used in the industry and daily life due to their versatile physical and chemical properties. Therefore, a fundamental understanding of the structures and dynamics at a molecular level will provide piercing insights into the precise design and application of new polyurethane materials. In this study, we mainly focused on investigating the strain-induced structural and dynamic changes in a typical polyurethane elastomer composed of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and 4,4'-diphenylmethylene diisocyanate (MDI) as the soft and hard segments, respectively. Obvious strain-hardening phenomenon was observed during the mechanical tensile test, and a systematic comparison was performed on the fractured and pristine samples. DSC results revealed that the crystallization of PCL chains was still going on after the sample was fractured, and the crystallite structures became stable after physical aging at 25 degrees C for two days. H-1 solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment was further employed to determine the fraction of mobile PCL chains that were converted to crystallites during stretching. Besides, the microphase separation was also significantly enhanced in the fractured sample. The mobility of amorphous PCL chains was largely reduced due to the strain-induced crystallization of nearby PCL segments, as revealed by the H-1 magic-sandwich echo (MSE) NMR experiments. H-1 multiple quantum (MQ) NMR experiments also quantitatively revealed the strain-induced orientation of amorphous PCL chains in the fractured sample, indicating that the PCL crystallites were acting as the physical cross-linkages to prevent the contraction of the elongated PCL chains when the sample is fractured.
Elucidating the impact of microstructure on mechanical properties of phase-segregated polyurea: Finite element modeling of molecular dynamics derived microstructures

Abstract:Phase-segregated polyureas (PU) have received considerable interest due to their use as tough, impact-resistant coatings. Polyureas are favored for these applications due to their mechanical strain rate sensitivity and energy dissipation. Predicting and tailoring the mechanical response of PU remains challenging due to the complex interaction between its elastomeric and glassy phases. To elucidate the role of PU microstructure on its mechanical properties, we developed a finite element modeling framework in which each phase is represented by a volume fraction within a representative volume element (RVE). Critically, we used separate constitutive models to describe the elastomeric and glassy phases. We developed a plasticity-driven breakdown process in which we model the glassy phase disaggregating into a new phase. The overall contribution of each phase at a material point is determined by their respective volume fractions within the RVE. We applied our modeling methods to two compositions of PU with differing elastomeric segment lengths derived from oligoether diamines, Versalink P650 and P1000. Our simulations show that a combination of microstructural differences and elastomeric phase properties accounts for the difference in mechanical response between P650 and P1000. We show our model's ability to predict PU behavior in various loading conditions, including low-rate cyclic loading and monotonic loading over a wide range of strain rates. Our model produces microstructure transformations that mirror those indicated by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments. Fourier transform analysis of our RVEs reveals glassy phase fibrillation due to deformation, a finding consistent with SAXS experiments.

Mechanically Responsive Luminescent Polymers Based on Supramolecular Cyclophane Mechanophores

Abstract:A new approach to cyclophane-based supramolecular mechanophores is presented. We report a mechanically responsive cyclic motif that contains two fluorescent 1,6-bis(phenylethynyl)pyrene moieties that are capable of forming intramolecular excimers. The emission spectra of dilute solutions of this cyclophane and a polyurethane elastomer into which a small amount of the mechanophore (0.08 wt %) had been covalently integrated are dominated by excimer emission. Films of the cyclophane-containing polyurethane also display a considerable portion of excimer emission, but upon deformation, the fluorescence becomes monomer-dominated and a perceptible change from cyan to blue is observed. The response is instant, reversible, and consistent with a mechanically induced change of the molecular conformation of the mechanophore so that the excimer-promoting interactions between the luminophores are suppressed. In-depth investigations show a correlation between the applied strain and the emission color, which can conveniently be expressed by the ratio of monomer to excimer emission intensity. In Situ Reversible and Robust Mechano‐Responsive Ultralong Phosphorescence of Polyurethane Elastomer

Abstract:An in‐situ, sensitive, and rapidly reversible mechano‐responsive (MR) phosphorescence from a doped polyurethane (PU) elastomer has been achieved from the reversible MR polymer chain orientation and hydrogen bonding interactions among the system. Based on their MR afterglow, these PU materials have demonstrated various applications without interruption of background, including micro‐crack detection, material damage prediction, limb movement monitoring, and information encryption. Though mechano‐responsive luminescent materials obtained much attention, most of their responses are non‐reversible, let alone in situ reversible. Here, the study presents a new strategy to push through this limitation for their applications, which relies on the reversible mechano‐responsive (MR) hydrogen bonding interactions and polymer chain orientation among a doped polyurethane (PU) elastomer. The radiative and nonradiative transitions inside these phosphorescent triphenylene‐based aromatic secondary amines (TpNP and TpNPO) doped in the PU matrix can be accordingly modulated by these MR variations, including the PU chains orientation and the interactions between emitters and PU, respectively. Surprisingly, the intensities, quantum yields, and even lifetimes of their ultralong phosphorescence correlate well with the stress of PU, showing triple mechano‐enhancement with a small threshold value of 7.9 MPa. Importantly, these in situ and rapidly reversible MR phosphorescences possess excellent repeatability, which is still displayed even after >500 cycles of loading/unloading. Based on such a robust and highly sensitive MR afterglow, these PU materials have been demonstrated applications with no interruption of background in several fields, including micro‐crack detection, material damage prediction, limb movement monitoring, and information encryption. This work provides new insights for developing innovative ultralong phosphorescence materials with improved luminescence and reversible mechano‐responsive behavior.

Abstract:A series of nanocomposite elastomers are prepared by dispersing surface‐modified silica Janus nanoparticles into semi‐interpenetrating network (Semi‐IPN) of polyurethane/polyethyl methacrylate. Benefiting from the hierarchically crosslinked structures that consist of physical interlocking mediated by hydrogen‐bond‐rich silica Janus nanoparticles and permanent crosslinking by Semi‐IPN, these elastomers exhibit excellent mechanical properties. Moreover, the Janus nanosheet is found more effective in strengthening and toughening the Semi‐IPN, in comparison to Janus hollow sphere. Since 1,2‐dioxetane is covalently embedded in these elastomers as a mechanoluminescent stress probe, stress transfer between the polymer and Janus nanoparticles and the toughening mechanism can be illuminated, which offer exciting opportunities to study the failure process of complex polymer nanocomposites with high spatial and temporal resolution.

Abstract:Herein, a facile strategy was established to build mechanoresponsive luminogens with high sensitivity to substituents and positional effects. Even in slightly different structures, distinct optical phenomena, including fluorescence efficiency and mechano-responsive properties, were clearly present. Outstanding mechanical-induced emission enhancement (5-100 times) properties and reversibility makes for promising applications in pressure sensors and OLEDs.

Abstract:1,2-Dioxetane is a chemiluminescent mechanophore that allows the study of bond scission events with high sensitivity and resolution. We now make use of this mechanoluminescent probe to give a microscopic view of self-healing behaviors. Herein, a series of robust polyurethanes, with 1,2-dioxetane and aliphatic disulfide incorporated in the main chain and confined in the hard microphase, are developed. Taking advantage of the phase-locked bonds design strategy, these polymers exhibit excellent mechanical properties and self-healing capability as well as sensitive responsiveness to stress. With covalently embedded 1,2-dioxetane, the mechanoluminescent intensity from the healable films is highly dependent on the healing process, which provides a sensitive approach to supervise healing efficiency, particularly at the molecular level. By combining self-healing and self-reporting moieties in one chain, this two-in-one strategy allows for the discrimination of different healing mechanisms, in the aspects of bond formation and chain entanglement, in a visualized way.

Abstract:1,2-Dioxetane is a well-known chemiluminescent mechanophore allowing real-time monitoring of polymer chain scission, but usually suffers from fluorescence quenching in polar environments. Herein, a series of mechanochemiluminescent waterborne polyurethanes/carbon dots composites ( WPU-CDs ) have been synthesized by incorporating fluorescent CD s to promote the energy transfer process in different environments. The resulting bulk WPU s, and in particular, their swollen films filled with a large amount of polar solvents (water and ionic liquid) emit intense mechanochemiluminescence. Thus force-induced covalent bond scission and stress distribution within these different WPU-CDs films can be sensitively visualized. Furthermore, the ionic liquid containing films exhibited both electrical and luminescent signal changes under stretching, which offer a new kind of force sensor responsive at a broad detecting strain range and for multi-mode strain analysis. This study is expected to stimulate new research endeavors in mechanistic insight on waterborne polyurethanes and the corresponding stretchable sensing devices.
Friction Induced Mechanochemical and Mechanophysical Changes in High Performance Semicrystalline Polymer

Abstract:By using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopy, the worn specimens of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) tested under unlubricated sliding friction and wear conditions at a constant sliding speed were investigated in order to reveal mechanochemically and mechanophysically induced structural changes of polymer as well as wear mechanisms on a molecular scale. Chain scission was found on the worn surface layer. The results suggest that oxidation was the major mechanochemical reaction that followed the chain scission on the top surface. Evidence for chain branching or even crosslinking in bulk materials was also presented. Moreover, two-stage loading dependencies were found for both surface and subsurface in the bulk as revealed through wear rate measurement and wear debris analysis. It was proved that a thermo-activation of polymer segments may be responsible for the transition in the dependence of structure on load. The results of the present work also provide a method (based on spectral analyses) that can be used for studying micromechanisms accounting for shear deformation and failure.

Abstract:Mechanoluminescence (ML) exhibits distinctive mechano-optical response characteristics, rendering it promising for various applications. This study presents a porous ML elastomer capable of high intensity luminescence and extended sensitive dimension, which is prepared by molding the composite of luminescent particles (ZnS:Cu) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) within a structured-porous template. With quantitative measurements and simulations, the enhanced luminescence can be attributed to the effect of stress concentration and the enhancement of contact electrification induced by the pore structure. Compared to the dense structure, the luminescence of the porous structure is greatly enhanced (more than 10 times!) and sensitive to compressing, which can promisingly expand ML applications from unidirectional stretching (2D) to three-dimensional (3D).

Abstract:In this work, an environmentally friendly and novel oxide-based mechanoluminescent material, Sr3Al2O6: Eu3+, which can serve as the alternative for the widely used but environmentally hazardous transition metal-doped sulfides is reported. This oxide could exhibit highly efficient photoluminescence, but even more efficient mechanoluminescence as embedded into polydimethylsiloxane matrix under mechanical stimulation. The emitting color of the resultant Sr3Al2O6: Eu3+/polydimethylsiloxane elastomer composites could be further manipulated by adjusting the synthesis atmosphere of the Sr3Al2O6: Eu3+ based on its unique self-reduction characteristic. Moreover, by combining the wavelength selectivity of photoluminescence and dynamic stress response of mechanoluminescence, Sr3Al2O6: Eu3+ enables the design of two types of intriguing devices. They are a dual-responsive anticounterfeiting flexible device activated by either photons or mechanics, and a comprehensive stretching/strain sensor capable of sensing both strain level and stretching states. In comparison to the conventional luminescent materials, with a rare combination of efficient photoluminescence, highly sensitive mechanoluminescence, and facile color tunability, Sr3Al2O6: Eu3+ is much more versatile and ideal for various advanced applications.

Abstract:1,2-Dioxetane was found as a mechanoluminescent probe when it was covalently linked into a polymer backbone. To bring about a further leap in sensitivity without sacrificing thermal stability of this mechanophore is highly desirable while a great challenge. Herein, we presented a new strategy to improve the mechanoluminescent sensitivity of 1,2-dioxetane-containing polyurethanes (PUs) by incorporating fluorescent dyes as the repeating units into the main chains of PUs. This approach provides simplified procedures to obtain mechanoluminescent films with high quality and increased amount of acceptor units. Compared to the same mechanophore-containing polymer with physically incorporated fluorophores, the two kinds of PUs not only exhibited enhanced light intensity and tunable emission colors but also displayed much lower force threshold upon deformation due to the efficient energy transfer. By virtue of these advantages, the current work will promise an invaluable tool to study failure mechanisms of thermoplastic elastomers at molecular level with unprecedented resolution.

Abstract:Mechanophores, force-sensitive molecules, can be covalently linked into polymer networks to reveal the damage properties of polymeric materials under deformation. Recent works have introduced bis-adamantyl dioxetane (Ad) into multiple network elastomers. These mechanoluminescent cross-linking molecules can emit luminescence as they break. The experimental results can directly visualize the damage behaviors of multiple network elastomers and reveal the damage mechanism of these materials during deformation. In this work, we develop a constitutive model to describe the complex mechanical behaviors of multiple network elastomers based on observations from mechano-chemiluminescent experiments. The free energy density consists of the contributions from the filler network, the matrix network, and the entangled network. A new type of single-chain model is developed for the filler network, while the classic eight-chain mapping is adopted for the micro-macro transition. The chains in the filler network are progressively damaged under deformation to explain the stress-softening behaviors observed in the small and median strain regions of multiple network elastomers. The entangled network is rooted in individual fragments of the damaged filler network, which can be further damaged in the large deformation regime. The model can comprehensively capture the complex mechanical responses of multiple network elastomers with different values of the prestretching ratio of the filler network, including linear response, necking instability, and re-hardening phenomena in quadruple networks. By assuming that the luminescence intensity of the materials is proportional to the total percentage of damage from both filler and entangled networks, we quantify the relationship between damage and the luminescence intensity from mechanophores, which is further validated in quantifying luminescence intensity against different sets of experimental data on the uniaxial tension of multiple network elastomers. The model is further implemented for finite element analysis, demonstrating the ability to visualize and characterize the damage behaviors around a crack.

Abstract:With the combination of mechanochemiluminescence from 1,2-dioxetane coupled polymers and granulated conjugated microporous polymer (CMP) nanosheets, a new kind of filling-type mechanolumninescent polymer composite was developed. Herein, polymeric 1,2-dioxetane performed as an autoluminescent probe of chain scission. Besides benefiting from their excellent optical properties and good interfacial compatibility with poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) media, two stable and fluorescent CMP nanosheets were prepared and dispersed in crosslinked PMA, which can serve as effective energy acceptors and reinforcing nano-fillers. These polymer nanocomposites present both reinforced mechanical strength and mechanochemiluminescence, and offer exciting opportunities to study the failure process of polymer nanocomposites with unprecedented temporal and spatial resolution.
