Abstract:It is extremely significant and desirable to integrate the fascinating properties of mechanochromism and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) in one simple molecule. Herein, pyrene-based aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) with mechanofluorochromic (MFC) properties solve the traditionally existing aggregation- caused quenching (ACQ) challenge. Three cyanoethylene-functionalized pyrene-based derivatives were designed and synthesized. All compounds exhibit remarkable aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) activity by a 3-20 times enhancement in mixed H2O/THF 2 O/THF solutions. More importantly, high fluorescence efficiency was recorded in the solid state, especially for the luminogen 2c , with more than 200 times observed increased efficiency from 0.3% in solution to 69.8% in the solid state. Meanwhile, excellent mechanochromism properties and reversibility against the grinding treatment was systematically investigated. The excellent fatigue resistance properties are a necessity for potential applications in the field of anti-counterfeiting fluorescent inks and for the encryption of security information.

Abstract:Luminescent molecules with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property or AIE-active luminogens (AIE-gens) are typical stimuli-responsive materials. Many AIE-gens have shown luminescent responses to mechano-, thermo-, electro-, vapo-, and/or solvato-stimulus, but the detailed structure-property relationship has been addressed for only a few of them. Here, we report a tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivative with pyridyl modifiers and ethynylene bridges. The (Z)- and (E)-isomers are clearly purified, and both of them are AIE-active and demonstrate multiple luminescent responses to external stimuli. Distinct from other reported TPE derivatives, the two isomers show negative solvatochromism due to the large dipole in the ground electronic state. By correlating with the single crystal structures, the subtle differences in quantum efficiency and emission peak wavelength of the solids of the (Z)- and (E)-isomers are rationally explained. Moreover, the ground powder of the (E)-isomer can recover its emission color from green to blue in the air at room temperature but the (Z)-isomer cannot. This difference is interpreted by a mechanism of water-triggered conformational variation, which depends on the hydrogen bond formation between pyridyl moieties and water molecules in the air. In addition to the reversible emission color changes by cyclic grinding-fuming treatments, both of the isomers exhibit a reversible luminescent response to acid-base treatments by switching the emission color between green (basic) and yellow (acid), owing to the incorporation of pyridyl units into the molecule. The unprecedented multiple stimuli-responsive behaviors and clear mechanism explanations allow this kind of AIE-gens to be promising smart materials.
Triphenylamine-Functionalized Tetraphenylpyrazine: Facile Preparation And Multifaceted Functionalities

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is a unique photo-physical phenomenon and has become an emerging and hot research area. With the enthusiastic efforts paid by researchers, hundreds of AIE-active luminogens (AIEgens) have been generated but heterocyclic AIEgens are rarely reported. Recently, we enriched the family of AIEgens and reported a pyrazine-based AIEgen of tetraphenylpyrazine (TPP), which could be facilely functionalized by a post-synthetic strategy. In this work, we further expanded the TPP-based AIE system by covalently attaching one, two or four electron-donating triphenylamine moieties to the TPP core via Suzuki coupling, and TPP-TPA, TPP-2TPA and TPP-4TPA were produced, respectively. Thanks to their donor-pi-acceptor structures, these luminogens exhibit multifunctional properties, such as excellent thermal stability (up to 504 degrees C), large molar absorptivity, bright emission in the solid state (quantum yields up to 35.2%), solvatochromism, and high two-photon absorption cross-sections (up to 480 GM). Furthermore, using TPP-TPA as the emitting layer, a triple-layer device was fabricated and a turn-on voltage, maximum luminance, current efficiency, power efficiency, and external quantum efficiency of 3.7 V, 17 459 cd m(-2), 5.49 cd A(-1), 3.18 lm W-1 and 2.88% were realized, respectively. These results indicate a huge potential to develop high-tech applications based on these TPP-based AIEgens.

Abstract:The research on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has drawn increasing interests in the past decade. With the efforts scientists paid, a variety of AIE systems have been developed, among which the tetraphenylethelene and silole derivatives are the most studied. Development of new AIE systems could further enrich the AIE molecules and promote the development of AIE area. In this communication, we prepared a new AIE system based on 1,2,4,6-tetraphenylpyridinium ions according to the restriction of intramolecular rotation mechanism. These molecules could be facilely synthesized via one-step and one-pot reaction. The ionic AIE-active molecules could find wide application in sensing and optoelectronic areas.

Abstract:We report the design and synthesis of a novel cationic AIE-gen, i.e., (E)-TPEDEPy-DBz, which can be derived from a facile synthetic route. (E)-TPEDEPy-DBz is a stereo-pure isomer and shows evident AIE properties with yellow-greenish emission in the solid state (ΦF = 43.7%). Distinct from most of the ionic AIE-gens reported in the literature, which are usually exemplified by their water solubility and the capacity for interaction with charged biological species, (E)-TPEDEPy-DBz demonstrated moderate solvatochromism and evident mechanoluminochromism behaviours. The emission of (E)-TPEDEPy-DBz can be switched between yellow-greenish in the crystalline state to red-orange in the amorphous state by grinding and fuming treatments. Due to the AIE-characteristics, cationic modification and the thus-acquired water solubility, (E)-TPEDEPy-DBz performed as a sensitive fluorescent probe to detect DNA in Tris-HCl buffer solution. More importantly, (E)-TPEDEPy-DBz showed good membrane permeability and cell viability, and the potentiality to be used as a mitochondria-specific probe working in a fluorescence turn-on mode.

Abstract:Research on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has been a hot topic. Due to enthusiastic efforts by many researchers, hundreds of AIE luminogens (AIEgens) have been generated which were mainly based on archetypal silole, tetraphenylethene, distyrylanthracene, triphenylethene, and tetraphenyl-1,4-butadiene, etc. To enlarge the family of AIEgens and to enrich their functions, new AIEgens are in high demand. In this work, we report a new kind of AIEgen based on tetraphenylpyrazine (TPP), which could be readily prepared under mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, we show that the TPP derivatives possess a good thermal stability and their emission could be fine-tuned by varying the substituents on their phenyl rings. It is anticipated that TPP derivatives could serve as a new type of widely utilized AIEgen, based on their facile preparation, good thermo-, photo-and chemostabilities, and efficient emission.

Abstract:Two new mechanofluorochromic-active AIE non-planar phenothiazine-based dyes (E)-N'-((10-ethyl-10 H -phenothiazin-3-yl)methylene)-4-methylbenzenesulfonohydrazide (EPMMBS) and (E)-N'-((10-ethyl-10 H -phenothiazin-3-yl)methylene) benzenesulfonohydrazide (EPMBS) were designed and successfully fabricated by simple one step aldimine condensation reaction strategy. The synthesized compounds EPMBS and EPMMBS with subtle different electron-withdrawing moieties disclosed distinct mechanofluorochromic phenomenon via fluorescence color and emission intensity changes upon mechanical grinding. The mechanofluorochromism was supported by PXRD (powder X-ray diffraction) and FESEM (field emission scanning electron microscopy)the powder XRD and FESEM analysis due to the phase transition between well-organized crystalline and the amorphous phase. Our work would provide a promising way for designing more mechanofluorochromic materials.

Abstract:Since conceptually proposed by Tang et al. in 2001, the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has caused tremendous interests among scientists worldwide. Currently, hundreds of ME-active luminogens have been designed and prepared, but most of them are small molecular ones. However, the AIE-active polymers possess charming advantages, such as mutable and tunable molecular structure, excellent film-foming ability and facile processability, thus, are potentially applied in diverse high-tech areas, like fluorescent chemo- and bio-sensors, optoelectronic devices and so on. In this chapter, we first summarize the types of the presented AIE-active polymers by incorporating AIE-active units, such as tetraphenylethene (TPE), multi-phenyl substituted siloles and distyrylanthracene (DSA). In addition, a new kind of luminogenic polymers containing unconventional chromophore, such as poly(amido amine) (PAMAM), poly(amino ester) and poly[(maleic anhydride)-alt-(vinyl acetate)], are also discussed. Our aim is to establish a structure-property relationship of AIE-active polymers, and further demonstrate how to control the AIE-activity of the polymers via intelligent and rational molecular design.

Abstract:Research on aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) has caused tremendous research enthusiasms among scientists worldwide because they can realize strong solid-state luminescence to meet real-world applications. It is crucial to develop AIEgens with different structures to access different functionalities. Recently, a series of pyrazine-based prototype AIEgens are developed which include the distinctive features of convenient synthesis and post-modification, good stability, tunable molecular excited-state motion, electronic structure and geometry, and rich N functional binding sites. They exhibit the university to design photoelectronic, sensing, imaging, therapy, self-assembling, porous, chiral and polymer materials, etc. This review will summarize the uniqueness of this kind of AIEgens and their advance in mechanism study, molecular design and application development. With this review, more attentions will be inclined to study pyrazine-based AIEgens and more sparks will be motivated to develop new luminescent functional materials.

Abstract:Aggregation induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) as one of the optimal alternatives for designing stimuli-responsive fluorophores for real-life applications have sparked much current interest in smart materials design. Herein, the "Star molecules" in AIEgens of α-cyanostilbene and Tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivatives were constructed into one molecular, namely DC-TPE-tBu and DC-TPE-CN. Both compounds exhibited significant AIE properties. Moreover, the two compounds could change their luminescent colors and intensities under the stimulation of external mechanical force and UV light, showing excellent mechanochromic luminescent (MCL) and remarkable photo-responsive behaviors, respectively. The stimuli responsive mechanisms were investigated by powder X-Ray diffractometer (PXRD) spectra and density functional theory calculations (DFT). The MLC behaviors were associated with the crystalline-to-amorphous transitions after mechanical grinding. These remarkable features make them suitable for the application of mechano/photo-sensors. The studies provide a useful strategy for developing AIE-active functional materials.

Abstract:Polymers with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics have aroused tremendous interest because of their potential applications in large-area flexible display and luminescent self-assembling, and as stimuli-responsive and porous materials. However, the design of AIE-active polymers is always not as easy as that of small molecules because their properties are hard to predict. In some cases, the polymers prepared from the AIE-active monomers show the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) instead of AIE effect. To understand the structure-property relationship of the polymers constructed from the AIE monomers, in this paper, two pyrazine-containing AIE monomers were utilized to construct luminescent polymers by click polymerization. The photophysical property investigation indicates that the polytriazole containing tetraphenylpyrazine units is AIE-active, whereas that bearing 2,3-dicyano-5,6-diphenylpyrazine units suffers from the ACQ effect. Through systematical investigation, the cause for such difference was unveiled. Thus, this work provides a useful guidance for further design of AIE-active polymers.
Polymorphic Triphenylamine Derivative Showing Aggregation-Induced Emission and High-Contrast Mechanical Force-induced Blue Shift

Abstract:Mechanical force-induced, high-contrast blue-shift luminescent mechanochromic (MC) molecules have rarely been reported. Herein, we designed and synthesized an AIE luminogens (AIEgens) triphenylamine derivative N, N -diphenyl-4-(6-phenyl-[2,2′-bipyridin]-4-yl)aniline ( DPTPA ). Three different emission wavelengths from blue crystals ( B-DPTPA ), sky-blue crystals ( S-DPTPA ), and green crystals ( G-DPTPA ) were obtained by culturing the crystals under different crystallization conditions. All three crystal polymorphs showed high solid luminescent efficiency, each of which was sensitive to external pressure and was accompanied by significant fluorescence blue shift. Under a mechanical force, B-DPTPA shows a 12 nm blue shift, S-DPTPA fluorescence color changed from sky-blue to blue with an increase emission and G-DPTPA changed its color from green (510 nm) to sky-blue (428 nm) with an 82 nm blue shift. Such obvious color change and large blue shift were rarely been reported. Characterization of the photophysical properties, theoretical calculations, hydrostatic pressure, powder X-ray diffraction and X-ray single crystal structures showed that three crystal polymorphs of DPTPA originated from single molecules, space interactions, molecular pairs (dimers), and the blue shift of B-DPTPA, S-DPTPA, G-DPTPA were ascribed to the solid-state morphology transition from crystal to amorphous due to the destruction of space interactions and dimers. This study provides the relationship between the molecular packings and the blue shift emission of AIEgens materials under mechanical forces is understood in the molecular level.

Abstract:Most of the reported stimuli-responsive aggregation induced emission (AIE) molecules are single-functioned and it remains highly demanded to integrate multi-stimuli responsive properties in one molecule. A multi-stimuli responsive TPE derivative 1 was synthesized bearing multiple properties including mechanochromism, mechanoluminescence and photochromism. Mechanoluminescence was only shown by the single crystal form, while photochromism was only observed in the amorphous powder. The mechanochromic property of 1 was self-reversible, but can also be accelerated by thermal or solvent vapor treatment. The photochromic property of 1 was easily switched on by a phase transition from crystalline state to amorphous state upon grinding. By a combination of mechanochromism and photochromism, a two-step procedure of color response of 1 was demonstrated upon grinding and UV irradiation. This novel molecule provides an important insight to the development of multi-stimuli responsive materials and advanced anti-counterfeiting materials.

Abstract:Two simple donor-acceptor multifunctional pure organic light-emitting molecules[(9 H -carbazol-9-yl)(4-hydroxyphenyl)-methanone(CzMP) and (4-hydroxyphenyl)(10 H -phenothiazin-10-yl)methanone(PTZMP)] with distinct aggregation-induced emission(AIE) properties were synthesized. Surprisingly, CzMP showed a long room temperature phosphorescence lifetime (>900 ms), and PTZMP exhibited triple emission of prompt fluorescence(PF), room temperature phosphorescence(RTP) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence(TADF). Furthermore, CzMP effectively responded to mechanical external forces and solvent fumigation, exhibiting dual-mode mechanochromic luminescence(MCL) including multiple fluorescence color shifts and phosphorescence switching. Time-dependent density functional theory(TDDFT) calculations were investigated to explain different luminescence properties of the two molecules, and the single crystal of CzMP was obtained and analyzed to demonstrate the unique molecular stacking pattern and strong intermolecular interactions in close association with phosphorescence emission. The multifunctional luminescent properties of the emitters explored in this work could be more effectively applied to a wide range of applications, such as information encryption and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:Two couples of pinene-containing N^C*N and C*N^N-coordinated Pt(II) complexes featuring a fused five-six-membered metallacycle have been developed, and their structures were confirmed by NMR, MS and single crystal X-ray crystallography. Cyclometalated complex (−)-2 has two polymorphs involving yellow-orange form (−)-2·CH3COCH3 and orange form (−)-2·CH3SOCH3, revealing different conformations and intermolecular π−π interactions. Complexes (−)-1 and (−)-2 display prominent aggregation-induced emission (AIE) in THF-water solution system with emission quantum yield (Φem) strengthening from 0.2% to 37%. Despite the structural similarity of complexes (−)-1 and (−)-2, different mechanochromic luminescent phenomena have been distinguished. No detectable change in color and luminescence of yellow solids (−)-1 can be found during the grinding process, whereas yellow solids of complex (−)-2 show a reversible mechanochormic luminescent behavior and a simultaneous crystal-to-amorphous transformation. It is speculated that dimeric structures containing weak π−π interactions are formed under the mechanical force, and simultaneously the molecular conformation becomes more planar, improving the conjugation, inducing the emissive state variance with more 3MLCT/3ILCT character. Moreover, anti-counterfeiting application based on complex (−)-2 has been explored. This research provides a new design strategy for exploring AIE-active Pt(II) complexes with high-contrast mechanochromic luminescence.

Abstract:Organic fluorophores with reversible emission switching behavior are promising materials for applications in sensors, optical recording, security inks, and optoelectronics. A variety of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogens with mechanochromic luminescence has been prepared, and the transformation of efficient bluer-emitting crystals to amorphous powders with redder and weaker emission is proposed to be the cause for such behavior. However, detailed mechanistic understanding from experimental to theoretical is lacking. In this work, we present the design and synthesis of a group of bis(diarylmethylene)dihydroanthracenes with butterfly-like shapes. These molecules exhibit aggregation-induced emission characteristics due to the restriction of intramolecular motion in the aggregated state. They show mechanochromism, because of the transformation between crystal and amorphous states with different colors and efficiencies aided by grinding/heating or solvent fuming processes. By investigation of their single-crystal structures and theoretical calculations, the loose molecular packing with noncovalent intermolecular interactions, the extent of conformational twisting, and the packing density of the luminogens, as well as freedom of intermolecular motion in the excited state, are stemmed for their reversible polymorphism-dependent emission behaviors.

Abstract:Two new AIE-active triphenylamine-based aza-N,O-chelated boron difluoride dyes (E)-3-(4-(diphenylamino)benzylidene)-2,2-difluoro-5-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1,3,4,2-oxadiazaborol-3-ium-2-uide (TPA-H) and (E)-5-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(4-(diphenylamino)benzylidene)-2,2-difluoro-2,3-dihydro-1,3,4,2-oxadiazaborol-3-ium-2-uide (TPA-Cl) were designed and synthesized. The reversible mechanochromism and piezochromism for TPA-H and TPA-Cl under mechanical stimulus and hydrostatic pressure were observed, while TPA-Cl with a chlorine atom gave a more sensitive and pronounced mechanochromic and piezochromic response under mechanical stimulus and hydrostatic pressure. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high-pressure PL and UV–vis absorption spectra analysis were applied to further investigated their different mechanochromism and piezochromism. Fine-tuning the molecular structures of triphenylamine-based aza-N,O-chelated boron difluoride dyes allowed convenient modulation of their optical properties and mechanoresponsive behaviors.

A Simple Molecular Design Towards the Conversion of a MCL Backbone to a Multifunctional Emitter Exhibiting Polymorphism, AIE, TADF and MCL

Abstract:Compared with the large number of single-function materials such as aggregation-induced emission (AIE), mechanochromic luminescence (MCL), or thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters, multifunctional emitting materials offer more opportunities in practical applications. In this report, we provide a simple molecular design strategy towards the conversion of a MCL building block to a multifunctional emitter. Through altering the substituent sites and increasing the number of electron donors and steric hindrance on a normal MCL backbone benzo[d,e]benzo[4,5]imidazo[2,1-a]isoquinolin-7-one, a novel multifunctional material 10,11-bis-(4-diphenylamino-phenyl)-benzo[d,e]benzo[4,5]imidazo[2,1-a]isoquinolin-7-one (10,11-2TPA-BBI) is designed and synthesized. 10,11-2TPA-BBI exhibits simultaneous polymorphism, AIE, MCL and TADF properties. It can form four different aggregate species: yellow solid (YS) and orange solid (OS), orange flake-shaped crystal (OC), and red prism-like crystal (RC). Among them, because of the small energy gaps (ΔESTs < 0.3 eV) between the singlet and triplet excited states, OS, OC and RC exhibit TADF properties, while YS show normal fluorescence characteristics with a large ΔEST of 0.33 eV. OS can be reversibly transformed into YS upon external stimuli, which can be attributed to the emission switch between local excited state and charge transfer state. Crystallographic study indicates that the bulky structure and weak intermolecular interactions account for polymorphism and AIE properties. This work will provide a simple molecular design strategy for multifunctional materials.
A Novel Strategy to Design and Construct AIE-active Mechanofluorochromic Materials Via Regulation of Molecular Structure

Abstract:In this work, we first designed and synthesized tetraphenylene-fused aryl-imidazole derivatives TM-1-4 via regulation of molecular structure, which were consisted of 1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline, 1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole, 4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazole, 3,3 '-(1H-imidazole-4,5-diyl)dipyridine moieties and AIE-active tetraphenylethene units, respectively. The results illustrated that TM-1-4 exhibited clear AIE characteristics. Meanwhile, TM-2 and TM-3 show excellent solid emission properties (phi(TM-2)=13.73 % and phi(TM-3)=36.21 %), whereas TM-1 and TM-4 exhibit the opposite properties (phi(TM-1)=1.48 % and phi(TM-4)=4.83 %). The multiple rotors (pyridine and benzene ring) causes twisted conformations of the molecule that prevents pi-pi stacking and enhances solid emission(phi TM-2TM-3, phi TM-1TM-4). Significantly, TM-2 and TM-3 also exhibited reversible mechanochromic behavior (Emission red shifts: Delta lambda(TM-2)=43 nm and Delta lambda(TM-3)=41 nm) with color changes between blue and green emissions. The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) suggested the disordered state of ground sample could be readily returned to an ordered crystalline. Therefore, the mechanochromisms of TM-2 and TM-3 are ascribable to the phase transformation between crystal and amorphous structure. The single crystal X-ray analysis of TM-2 reveals a twisted conformation for TPE moiety and the absence of pi-pi intermolecular stacking. These excellent optical properties of TM-2 and TM-3 make them potentially applications in mechanochromic materials and imaging agents.
