Abstract:The most recent studies on the applications of nanostructured carbon materials, including carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, and graphene oxides, in constructions are presented. First, the preparation of nanostructured carbon/infrastructure material composites is summarized. This part is mainly focused on how the nanostructured carbon materials were mixed with cementitious or asphalt matrix to realize a good dispersion condition. Several methods, including high speed melting mixing, surface treatment, and aqueous solution with surfactants and sonication, were introduced. Second, the applications of the carbon nanostructured materials in constructions such as mechanical reinforcement, self-sensing detectors, self-heating element for deicing, and electromagnetic shielding component were systematically reviewed. This paper not only helps the readers understand the preparation process of the carbon nanostructured materials/infrastructure material composites but also sheds some light on the state-of-the-art applications of carbon nanostructured materials in constructions.

Abstract:This article introduces the research progress of the application of nanomaterials,including carbon nanotubes,carbon nanofibers and organoclays in hierarchical carbon fiber/epoxy composites.The preparation,processing technology and properties of the hierarchical composites are reviewed.Present research has demonstrated that the nanomaterials can improve the mechanical properties of conventional composites,especially the interlayer shear strength,fatigue resistance,hot-humidity aging resistance and barrier property.Therefore,the study and application of hierarchical carbon fiber/epoxy composites have attracted great research interests.

Abstract:Since the discovery of buckyballs in 1985, the family of carbon materials has been rapidly growing. From zero-dimensional (0D) fullerene, 1D carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and recent 2D graphene to traditional 3D nanoporous carbon and nanodiamond, carbon nanomaterials exhibit a variety of structures and forms due to the existence of three hybridization forms, namely, sp3, sp2, and sp1, of carbon atoms. In recent years, they have increasingly gained interests from both scientific and industrial communities due to the unique physical and chemical properties. They show diverse potential applications in structure, electronics, energy, environment, water, and others. The purpose of this special issue is to report some latest research results on synthesis, characterization, and applications of carbon nanomaterials and related nanostructures. The accepted papers cover various carbon materials, namely, CNTs, graphene, carbon nanofibers, nanodiamonds, amorphous carbon films, carbon nanocomposite, graphite-like layered materials, and so on. These papers cover a wide range of topics related to synthesis and applications of these carbon nanomaterials in mechanics and tribology, thermal management, energy conversion (photoelectronic devices, solar cells, and photocatalysis), energy storage (lithium-ion batteries), and drug delivery fields. Moreover, two papers present theoretical calculation of carbon nanomaterials in electronic, optical, and surface adsorption properties using density functional theory.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube (CNT) is a promising nanomaterial with excellent mechanical, electrical, thermal, and chemical stability. It has received extensive attention due to its unique multifunctional properties in engineering materials. Researchers have explored the preparation and characterization of CNT reinforced cement-based materials. Studies have shown that adding CNT will significantly improve the performance of cement-based materials. This article introduces the techniques for the dispersion characterization of CNT and summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of these techniques. The functionalized applications of CNT in cement-based materials are reviewed, including sensing performance, structural health monitoring of concrete, electromagnetic shielding, and other applications. In addition, the application and development prospects of CNT in 3D printing concrete have been prospected. Finally, we discussed the existing problems and challenges in developing and applying CNT in cement-based materials and suggested future research.

Abstract:: Nanomaterials have brought an unprecedented revolution to the development of building materials with their unique properties of light, electricity, heat and magnetism. According to the future development trend of building materials and the development and application prospects of nanomaterials, this paper studies the application of nanomaterials in new building materials, providing a better development space for the future direction of new building materials. This research mainly conducted research from five aspects: the effect of modified carbon nanotubes on the bending performance and compressive strength of cement-based materials; the effect of composite materials on the effectiveness of cement-based materials in electromagnetic wave protection; the effectiveness of nano-carbon fiber cement materials Self-shrinking; Formaldehyde gas sensitivity of nanomaterials; The effect of surface modification of nano-TiO2 on the thermal stability of wheat straw fibers. The test results show that the results of improving the mechanical properties include: compressive strength increased by 132%, tensile strength increased by 34.28%, and flexural strength increased by 124.85%. When the silica fume content is 0, the electromagnetic shielding efficiency of different doped carbon nanometers are 22.1, 25.8, 27.6 and 31.4 respectively. As the silica fume content gradually increases, the ability to shield electromagnetic waves is stronger. When the water-cement ratio is 0.25 and 0.3, the autogenous shrinkage value of the nano-carbon fiber cement paste specimens shows a trend of first decreasing

Abstract:Through 30 years of research, researchers have gained a deep understanding of the synthesis, characteristics, and applications of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). However, up to now, there are still few industries using CNT as the leading material. The difficulty of CNTs to be applied in industry is the gap between the properties of CNT-based aggregates and those of a single carbon nanotube. Therefore, how to maintain the intrinsic properties of CNTs when they are assembled into aggregates is of great significance. Herein, we summarize and analyze the research status of CNT materials applied in different fields from proven techniques to potential industries, including energy storage, electronics, mechanical and other applications. For each application, the intrinsic properties of CNTs and the real performances of their aggregates are compared to figure out the key problems in CNT synthesis. Finally, we give an outlook for building a bridge for CNTs from nanoscale structure to macroscopic application, giving inspiration to researchers making efforts toward the real application of carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:The potential use of carbon nanotubes, SiO2, TiO2, Fe2O3, CuO, ZrO2, ZnO2, Al2O3, CaCO3, Cr2O3 and Ag nanoparticles in the civil engineering has been explored in this article. Most of the studies showed that addition of nanomaterials in appropriate quantity improved the strength and durability properties but decreased setting time as well as workability of cementitious composites. The other challenges include high cost, environmental and health risks associated with nanomaterials. That is why the comprehensive recommendations for the utilization of nanomaterials in day-to-day construction practice are still awaited. Also, a study to evaluate the corrosion behaviour of graphene and nano-TiO2-incorporated steel-reinforced cementitious composite has been undertaken. The nanoadmixed composite showed lower corrosion rate compared to uninhibited specimens at early ages. However, more results are required involving fairly longer period of time to establish graphene and nano-TiO2 as corrosion inhibitors.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube functional materials (CNTFMs) represent an important research field in transforming nanoscience and nanotechnology into practical applications, with potential impact in a wide realm of science, technology, and engineering. In this review, we combine the state-of-the-art research activities of CNTFMs with the application prospect, to highlight critical issues and identify future challenges. We focus on macroscopic long fibers, thin films, and bulk sponges which are typical CNTFMs in different dimensions with distinct characteristics, and also cover a variety of derived composite/hierarchical materials. Critical issues related to their structures, properties, and applications as robust conductive skeletons or high-performance flexible electrodes in mechanical and electronic devices, advanced energy conversion and storage systems, and environmental areas have been discussed specifically. Finally, possible solutions and directions are proposed for overcoming current obstacles and promoting future efforts in the field.

Abstract:<p>Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) have exhibited wide applications in the fields of materials science, nanotechnology, energy storage, environmental science, biomedicine, and others due to their unique structure, function, and properties. In this review, we present recent advance in the production and applications of various CNF-based nanomaterials. The methods for the production of CNFs are introduced firstly, and then different structures of CNFs related to corresponding synthesis methods are analyzed. In addition, the functional tailoring of CNFs by combining with other nanoscale building blocks such as nanoparticles, quantum dots, carbon materials, biomolecules, and others are demonstrated and discussed. Finally, the potential application of the CNF-based functional nanomaterials in the fields of supercapacitors, chemical batteries, solar cells, fuel cells, environmental adsorbents, sensors, biosensors, tissue engineering, antibacterial materials, electromagnetic interference shielding, and sharp memory materials are introduced and discussed in detail. It is expected this comprehensive review will not only help the readers to obtain the preliminary information on the production, modification, and applications of CNFs, but also promote the design and synthesis of novel CNF-based nanostructures and nanomaterials for advanced applications.</p>

Abstract:Due to the rapid development of current technology, one-dimensional nanomaterials have been widely used, allowing high-performance carbon nanotube cement-based composite materials based on one-dimensional nanomaterials to be better promoted and applied. As the core component of construction projects, the optimal design of civil building structures is particularly important. In order to better solve the current problems in the civil construction industry, this article conducts in-depth research on high-performance carbon nanotube cement-based composite materials and shows that they can be used for the optimisation of civil construction structures. Research shows that compared with traditional materials, the material's seismic resistance is improved by 7.26; its stability is improved by 11.17; its material quality is improved by 10; and its resistance to the outside world is improved by 11.21. This shows that high-performance carbon nanotube cement-based composites can improve the safety, stability and floor stiffness of building structures.

Abstract:<p>Carbon-based functional nanomaterials have attracted remarkable attention from the scientific community for their unique combinations of advantageous chemical and physical properties, such as superb electrical conductivity, excellent heat conductivity, chemical stability, advanced optical properties, and high mechanical strength. Our research group has been very actively involved in the study and further development of carbon-based functional nanomaterials and their potential applications for many years. In this feature article, we introduce our recent endeavors in the development of carbon-based nanomaterials with superior functionalities for potential application in diverse fields including solar thermal fuels, advanced thermal management, and electrochemical energy storage. The key design concepts of these advanced functional nanomaterials are highlighted, specific synthesis strategies are discussed, their potential usage in devices and applications is emphasized, and background information is succinctly furnished wherever warranted. We begin with an overview on the chemistry of carbon nanomaterials, in which the synthesis and chemical functionalization of carbon nanotubes and graphene are introduced, respectively. We then showcase the design, fabrication and properties of different functional carbon nanomaterials for diverse applications, including photoactive azobenzene/carbon nanomaterials for solar thermal fuels and light-driven carbon-based actuators, advanced carbon nanomaterials with directional thermal conductivity, and carbon-based electrodes for electrochemical energy storage. Finally, we conclude by briefly summarizing the advantages of the application of functional carbon-based nanomaterials in various fields, and list challenges that remain to be solved and potential that remains to be tapped.</p>

Abstract:A new group of nanomaterials, in free-standing form, such as fiber/yarns, paper/ sheet and bulk, made of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), has emerged in recent years. These materials have shown special and unique mechanical, thermal and electrical properties, with potential applications in various aspects. This chapter is aimed to summarize the significant progress that has been made and the importance of potential applications of these carbon nanomaterials. CNTs, of single-walled (SW), double-walled (DW) and multiwalled (MW), processing strategies (spinning, filtration, deposition and SPS), morphologies, properties (mechanical, electrical and thermal) and potential applications, as well as their inter-relationships, will be presented and discussed in detail.

Abstract:In recent years, many theoretical and experimental studies have been carried out to develop one of the most interesting aspects of the science and nanotechnology which is called carbon-related nanomaterials. The goal of this paper is to provide a review of some of the most exciting and important developments in the synthesis, properties, and applications of low-dimensional carbon nanomaterials. Carbon nanomaterials are formed in various structural features using several different processing methods. The synthesis techniques used to produce specific kinds of low-dimensional carbon nanomaterials such as zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterials (including fullerene, carbon-encapsulated metal nanoparticles, nanodiamond, and onion-like carbons), one-dimensional carbon nanomaterials (including carbon nanofibers and carbon nanotubes), and two-dimensional carbon nanomaterials (including graphene and carbon nanowalls) are discussed in this paper. Subsequently, the paper deals with an overview of the properties of the mainly important products as well as some important applications and the future outlooks of these advanced nanomaterials.

Abstract:Carbon-based hollow structured nanomaterials have become one of the hot areas for research and development of hollow structured nanomaterials due to their unique structure, excellent physicochemical properties and promising applications. The design and synthesis of novel carbon-based hollow structured nanomaterials are of great scientific significance and wide application value. The recent research on the synthesis, structure and functionalization of carbon-based hollow structured nanomaterials and their related applications are reviewed.
