Abstract:Fluorination on conjugated components is one of popular strategies to modify organic optoelectronic materials. Following the research of a benzodithiophene/benzothiadiazole ADA-type optoelectronic molecule, two benzothiadiazole (BT) units were fluorinated with different numbers and positions, and the change in basic properties and performances for field-effect transistors and manic solar cells was investigated. It was found that when the F-substitution number increases, the molecule enhances thermal stability, decreases solubility, lowers HOMO and LUMO energy levels, but almost does not alter light absorption range. Furthermore, investigations on organic field-effect transistors found the molecular hole mobility reduces with only one F-substituent at outer position of BT units, while increases up to 0.27 cm(2).V-1.s(-1 )with two F substituents on BT units. However, when these materials are applied in organic solar cells, the fluorinated ones enhance open-circuit voltage, but deteriorate active layer morphology, finally leading to decrease in short-circuit current and device efficiency.
The influence of thienyl-S,S-dioxidation on the photoluminescence and charge transport properties of dithienothiophenes: a theoretical study

Abstract:Fused thiophenes have been an important class of materials due to their intriguing organic optoelectronic application. Here, comparative theoretical investigation on the fluorescence and charge transport properties of dithienothiophene compounds (1 and 2) and their dioxide derivatives (3 and 4) was carried out to shed light on the role of the thienyl-S,S-dioxide unit. The lower HOMO, LUMO energy levels, and red-shift spectra (absorption and emission) of 3 and 4 compared with 1 and 2 were attributed to the electron-withdrawing nature of the thienyl-S,S-dioxide unit. The phenomenon that fluorescence quantum yield of 4 was significantly increased through thienyl-S,S-dioxidation, compared with those of 1 and 2, was analyzed by the evaluations of the radiative decay rates and the radiationless decay rates in theory at the single molecule level and the simulation of absorption spectrum of dimer of 1. For 1, a much higher hole mobility (0.12 cm2/V.s) calculated by carrier hopping model than the experimental value ~10−4 cm2/V.s was also further elucidated by molecular dynamics simulation. Furthermore, a preliminary investigation of the transport property of 3 was performed by combining the molecular dynamics simulation with dispersion-corrected B3LYP functional to provide insight into the effect of thienyl-S,S-dioxidation on the charge transport.

Abstract:In this work, we synthesized and characterized two quinoidal small molecules based on benzothiophene modified and original isatin terminal units, benzothiophene quinoidal thiophene (BzTQuT) and quinoidal thiophene (QuT), respectively, to investigate the effect of introducing a fused ring into the termini of quinoidal molecules. Extending the terminal unit of the quinoidal molecule affected the extension of π-electron delocalization and decreased the bond length alternation, which led to the downshifting of the collective Raman band and dramatically lowering the band gap. Organic field-effect transistor (OFET) devices in neat BzTQuT films showed p-type transport behavior with low hole mobility, which was ascribed to the unsuitable film morphology for charge transport. By blending with an amorphous insulating polymer, polystyrene, and poly(2-vinylnaphthalene), an OFET based on a BzTQuT film annealed at 150 °C exhibited improved mobility up to 0.09 cm2 V–1 s–1. This work successfully demonstrated that the extension of terminal groups into the quinoidal structure should be an effective strategy for constructing narrow band gap and high charge transporting organic semiconductors.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Amide and imide groups have been widely used in the design of organic semiconductors, and the development of new structure semiconductors based on these functional groups is of great interest to further improve the performance of organic electronic devices. Herein, we designed and synthesized two novel 5,10-dihydrodithieno[3,2- c :3′,2′- h ][2,6]naphthyridine-4,9-dione (TVTDA) based quinoidal molecules with different side chains, TVTDA-CN-EH and TVTDA-CN-OD. Both molecules showed the deep lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and the deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels and strong absorption in the long wavelength region. Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on TVTDA-CN-EH and TVTDA-CN-OD exhibited unipolar n-type electron transport behavior with mobilities of 0.04 and 0.0064 cm 2 ·V −1 ·s −1 , respectively. TVTDA-CN-EH with shorter alkyl side chains demonstrated better electron transport properties, which is attributed to the larger grain size in the film to facilitate charge transport. Furthermore, organic phototransistors (OPTs) based on TVTDA-CN-EH film showed good photo detection property from red light to near infrared region. Our work provides a new idea for the design and synthesis of organic semiconductors, especially for n-type organic semiconductors with photoresponse in the long wavelength.

Fine-Tuning of Crystal Packing and Charge Transport Properties of BDOPV Derivatives Through Fluorine Substitution.

Abstract:Molecular packing in organic single crystals greatly influences their charge transport properties but can hardly be predicted and designed because of the complex intermolecular interactions. In this work, we have realized systematic fine-tuning of the single-crystal molecular packing of five benzodifurandione-based oligo(p-phenylenevinylene) (BDOPV)-based small molecules through incorporation of electronegative fluorine atoms on the BDOPV backbone. While these molecules all exhibit similar column stacking configurations in their single crystals, the intermolecular displacements and distances can be substantially modified by tuning of the amounts and/or the positions of the substituent fluorine atoms. Density functional theory calculations showed that the subtle differences in charge distribution or electrostatic potential induced by different fluorine substitutions play an important role in regulating the molecular packing of the BDOPV compounds. Consequently, the electronic couplings for electron transfer can vary from 71 meV in a slipped stack to 201 meV in a nearly cofacial antiparallel stack, leading to an increase in the electron mobility of the BDOPV derivatives from 2.6 to 12.6 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1). The electron mobility of the five molecules did not show a good correlation with the LUMO levels, indicating that the distinct difference in charge transport properties is a result of the molecular packing. Our work not only provides a series of high-electron-mobility organic semiconductors but also demonstrates that fluorination is an effective approach for fine-tuning of single-crystal packing modes beyond simply lowering the molecular energy levels.
Theoretical Insights into the Effect of Different Numbers of Thiophene Groups on Hydrogen Bond Interaction and Excited-State Intramolecular Proton-Transfer Process for Flavonoid Derivatives

Abstract:In this study, we systematically explored the impact of varying the number of thiophene groups on the hydrogen bond interaction and excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer (ESIPT) processes in flavonoid derivatives (STF, DTF, and TTF) using the density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory methods. Initially, a thorough analysis of the optimized geometric structures revealed that the intramolecular hydrogen bond in the S1 state is enhanced and gradually weakened as the number of thiophene groups increases. To gain a deeper understanding of the hydrogen bond interaction, topological analysis, interaction region indicator scatter plots, and isosurface plots were employed. These images provide further insights that align with the structural analysis. Additionally, we observed a red-shift in the electronic spectra (absorption and fluorescence spectra), which is primarily attributed to the narrowing of the energy gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, as elucidated by the frontier molecular orbitals. Furthermore, a combined analysis between the hole-electron distribution and the transition density matrix heat map shows that electron excitation involves the unidirectional charge-transfer mechanism. In the end, by conducting relaxed potential energy curve scans, we found that an increase in the number of thiophene groups elevates the energy barrier for ESIPT, making it more challenging for the reaction. In summary, our study underscores the vital effect of thiophene-substituted numbers in modulating the ESIPT process, which is able to provide valuable insights for the design and synthesis of desired organic fluorescent probes in the future.
Effect of fluorine atoms on optoelectronic, aggregation and dielectric constants of 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-based alternating conjugated polymers

Abstract:Three 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-based conjugated copolymers named PBDT-0F-BTs, PBDT-2F-BTs and PBDT-6F-FBTs, which were derived from 4,8-bis(4,5-dioctylthiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene and (3,4'-bis(2-hexyl- decyl)-2,2'-dithiophene-5-yl) substituted 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole and/or 5,6-difluoro- 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole derivatives with 2,2′-dithiophene and/or 3,3′-difluoro- 2,2′-dithiophene as π-linkers, were prepared and characterized. The copolymers PBDT-0F-BTs, PBDT-2F-BTs and PBDT-6F-FBTs exhibited the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied orbital (LUMO) energy levels of −5.38 eV/−3.57 eV, −5.45 eV/−3.65 eV and −5.55 eV/−3.78 eV, with the light response from 300 nm to 720∼750 nm, alongside with the similar aggregation, except that the charge transporting mobilities were successively increased, and the dielectric constants were gradually improved from 3.3 to 4.8 to 5.9 at 1 KHz, while the fluorine atoms in the each repeat unit of polymers were varied from 0 to 2 and then up to 6, respectively. Beyond that, it has also been found that the power conversion efficiencies and exciton dissociation probability (P(E,T)) of the bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic cells (BHJ-OPVs) from the blend films of polymers paired with Y6 (2,2'-((2Z,2'Z)-((12,13-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,9-diundecyl12,13-dihydro[<a class="workspace-trigger" href="#bib1">1</a>,<a class="workspace-trigger" href="#bib2">2</a>,<a class="workspace-trigger" href="#bib5">5</a>]thia-diazolo[3,4-e]thieno[2'',3'':4',5']thieno[2',3':4,5]pyrrolo[3,2-g]thieno[2',3':4,5]thieno[3,2-b]indole-2,10-diyl)bis(methanylylidene))bis(5,6-difluoro-3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-ind-ene-2,1-diylidene))dimalononitrile), were varied from 7.83% and 85.9%, to 9.22% and 90.2% and then up to 12.34% and 91.4%. The results indicated that the continuous insertion of the fluorine atoms into the repeat units of the conjugated polymers would result in the consecutively deepening the HOMO energy levels, increase dielectric constants and charge mobilities, thus devote to the enhancement of the P(E,T) and the performance of the BHJ-OPVs.

Abstract:Intramolecular electron transfer is observed for two new substituted tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-quinone dyads 1 and 2 in the presence of metal ions. On the basis of the electrochemical studies of reference compound 5 and the comparative studies with dyad 3, it was proposed that the synergic coordination of the radical anion of quinone and the oligoethylene glycol chain with metal ions may be responsible for stabilizing the charge-separation state and thus facilitating the electron-transfer process. Most interestingly, the intramolecular electron-transfer processes within these two dyads can be modulated by UV-vis light irradiation in the presence of spiropyran, by taking advantage of its unique properties.
Synthesis and photovoltaic properties of an alternating polymer based fluorene and fluorine substituted quinoxaline derivatives

Abstract:An alternating polymer (PFOFTQx) with 9,9-dioctylfluorene (FO) as electron-rich unit and fluorine substituted quinoxaline (FTQx) as electron-withdrawing unit was synthesized and characterized. PFOFTQx showed similar absorption property with that of the counterpart polymer without fluorine atom (synthesized APFO-15). However, the low-lying highest occupied molecular orbit (HOMO) energy level of PFOFTQx was −5.37eV, about 0.07eV smaller than that of synthesized APFO-15. In order to study the photovoltaic properties of the materials, polymer solar cells (PSCs) were fabricated with PFOFTQx as donor blended with [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) as acceptor. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSC was 1.77% with a high open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.90V for an optimized PFOFTQx:PC61BM weight ratio of 1:5, in comparison with that of synthesized APFO-15-based device (PCE of 1.60% with Voc of 0.77V). This study indicated that fluorine substituted quinoxaline-based polymers would be promising material with a higher Voc for the application in polymer solar cells.
Effect of Substituents with the Different Electron-Donating Abilities on Optoelectronic Properties of Bipolar Thioxanthone Derivatives

Abstract:The synthesis and optoelectronic properties of four simple-structure thioxanthone derivatives employing thioxanthone as an acceptor unit, coupled with moieties having very different electron-donating abilities such as phenoxazine, 3,6-di-tert-butylcarbazole, 3,7-di-tert-butylphenothiazine, or 2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylacridane, are reported. The compounds form molecular glasses with glass transition temperatures reaching 116 °C. Ionization potentials of the compounds estimated by photoelectron emission method range from 5.42 to 5.74 eV. Thioxanthone derivatives containing 3,6-tert-butylcarbazole or 2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylacridane moieties with weak electron-donating strengths were characterized by bipolar charge transport with relatively close hole and electron mobility values of 6.8 × 10-5/2.4 × 10-5 and 3.1 × 10-5/4.6 × 10-6 cm2/(V s) recorded at 3.6 × 105 V/cm. The other compounds demonstrated hole-transporting properties. The films of thioxanthones containing phenoxazine or 2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylacridane moieties showed efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence with a photoluminescence quantum yield of up to 50% due to the solid-state luminescence enhancement. Organic-light-emitting diodes containing the synthesized compounds as emitters showed very different external quantum efficiencies (0.9-10.3%) and blue, sky blue, green, or yellow electroluminescence colors, thus reflecting the effects of donor substituents.
Synthesis of an isomerically pure thienoquinoid for unipolar n-type conjugated polymers: effect of backbone curvature on charge transport performance

Abstract:A single-isomer of the thienoquinoidal unit, IDOTT, has been synthesized via a new synthetic route involving regioselective nucleophilic addition, dihydroxylation, dehydrogenation, oxidation and isomerization, and the structure of IDOTT was unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Compared with the reported synthetic route, this newly developed strategy possessed a wide range of substrate applicability. Moreover, IDOTT showed good air stability and excellent compatibility to chemical reactions, endowing the potential to construct conjugated polymers by different cross-coupling reactions. With IDOTT as the acceptor unit, three donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers, i.e. PIDOTT-T, PIDOTT-TT and PIDOTT-BT, were synthesized by Stille polycondensation. These three polymers showed deep highest-occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) (<-5.90 eV) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) (similar to-4.04 eV) energy levels, and exhibited unipolar n-type behavior in organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). Among these polymers, PIDOTT-BT delivered the best device performance with an electron mobility of up to 0.45 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), which is the highest for n-type conjugated polymers with quinoidal units. The superior performance of PIDOTT-BT can be attributed to its highly ordered thin-film packing that stemmed from the small backbone curvature.
Organic Semiconducting Materials from Sulfur-Hetero Benzo[k]fluoranthene Derivatives: Synthesis, Photophysical Properties, and Thin Film Transistor Fabrication.

Abstract:A new family of air-stable sulfur-hetero oligoarenes based on the benzo[k]fluoranthene unit has been facilely developed as the active materials for thin film organic field-effect transistors. The Diels-Alder reaction between cyclopentadienone 1 and 2,2'-(ethyne-1,2-diyl)bisthiophene followed by decarbonylation afforded fluoranthene derivative 2. After bromination and subsequent substitution through Suzuki coupling reaction, the FeCl3-oxidative cyclization produced sulfur-hetero benzo[k]fluoranthene derivatives 8-12. In dilute chloroform solution, the absorption and emission behaviors of 2 and 4-7 showed characteristic features of the fluoranthene units, while their emission lambda(max) red-shifted with an increase of the effective conjugation length. The steady state absorption and emission spectra of these newly synthesized compounds were thoroughly investigated and discussed. Thin film organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) using 8-11 as active materials were fabricated in a "top contact" configuration. Substituents at the skeleton play an important role in the film morphologies, which lead to different mobilities, while the charge mobilities of 8-11 from OFETs were improved after thermal annealing of the thin films. A carrier mobility as high as 0.083 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) and current on/off ratio of 10(6) were achieved through vacuum-deposited film followed by the thermal annealing process from 11.

Abstract:Dithienothiophene-phenylene cooligomers with n-hexyloxy or n-dodecyloxy substituents have been synthesized and compared to the previously reported unsubstituted parent compound. The effect of substituents on the thermal, electronic, optical, thin film structure and field-effect transistor (OFET) properties was investigated. Structural phase transitions from highly-ordered nanocrystalline to liquid crystalline were observed at 241 and 213 °C for n-hexyloxy- and n-dodecyloxy-substituted compounds respectively, different from the parent compound. For the alkoxy-substituted compounds, the absorption spectra in thin film blue shift 50 nm, while the fluorescence spectra in thin film red shift 88–100 nm compared to those in solution. The OFET devices based on the alkoxy-substituted compounds exhibit mobilities as high as ca 0.02 cm2V−1s−1 and their performance is sensitive to the alkoxy substituents and substrate temperatures.

Abstract:Two quinoxaline-based polymers, in which the electron-donating 2-octyldodecyl modified benzodithiophene (BDT) group was connected to the electron-accepting 2,3-diphenyl quinoxaline (Qx) derivatives through a thiophene bridge, were synthesized by the Stille coupling reaction. Interestingly, the strong electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl (CF3) substituents were introduced at para-position of the benzene ring at 2,3-positions Qx to yield PBDT-CF3Qx. Moreover, two fluorine atoms were incorporated at the 6,7-positions of Qx in PBDT-CF3Qx to produce PBDT-CF3QxF. This simple approach demonstrate the effect of multiple electron-withdrawing moieties on the optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of Qx-based polymers.

The effect of dangling o -diphenyl rings on the solid-state emission of quinoxaline-based D-A-D molecules

Abstract:In this paper, we prepared four donor (D)–acceptor (A)–donor (D) compounds utilizing thiophene as D and quinoxaline as A to investigate the efficacy of the o -diphenyl side group in preventing aggregation caused quenching (ACQ). The phenyl rings were placed on the quinoxaline core ( QT-Ph ) and further modified at the para position with decyloxy ( QT-Ph-OC10 ), decanoate ( QT-Ph-EstC10 ), and benzoate ( QT-Ph-EstPh ) substituents. From UV-Vis spectroscopy, it was found that in solution the compounds exhibit similar absorption patterns with λ max around 440 nm with the exception of QT-Ph-OC10 which had a shorter λ max at 407 nm. In solution, all four compounds exhibited high fluorescence quantum yields at ca. 55% with emission maxima following the optical HOMO-LUMO gap trend. In the solid-state, all compounds experienced varying degrees of red-shift in their absorption and emission compared to solution. ACQ of 50-60% was observed for QT-Ph-OC10 and QT-Ph-EstPh in the solid-state. However, QT-Ph and QT-Ph-EstC10 showed significantly diminished ACQ and retained high quantum yields of 46% and 44%, respectively. The optimized geometries generated by theoretical calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G* level revealed that the dihedral angles between structural subunits may play a key role in the different degrees of ACQ. Notably, the dihedral angle between the quinoxaline and phenyl side group was found to be ca. 40 o . The ester group in QT-Ph-EstC10 was orthogonally arranged to the phenyl ring which may have prevented any significant ACQ. Both QT-Ph and QT-Ph-EstC10 proved to be excellent organogelators in several polar and nonpolar solvents. Polarized optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy on dried gels revealed the existence of one-dimensional fibers. Finally, their potential as fluorescent acid sensors was investigated. While all the title compounds showed fast emission quenching upon exposure to trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) vapor in the solid-state, only QT-Ph-EstC10 demonstrated fast emission recovery upon removal of TFA. The reversibility was discussed with electrostatic potential energy map. The current study demonstrates not only the utility of dangling o-diphenyl groups in reducing ACQ, but also feasibility of further modificaiton that can tune photophysical and assembling properties.

Abstract:Driven by the success of quinoidal units for enabling high performance polymer semiconductors, herein we report a new quinoidal building block that terminated by indandione. By introducing Br atoms into the terminal benzene rings of indandione, two CPs, P2TbTI‐DPP and P2TbTI‐TIID, are synthesized through Stille polycondensation. The strong electron‐withdrawing ability of indandione‐terminated quinoidal unit enables P2TbTI‐DPP and P2TbTI‐TIID with low‐lying LUMO energy levels of ~‐3.90 eV. Organic thin‐film transistors based on P2TbTI‐DPP and P2TbTI‐TIID exhibit n‐type transport behavior. Besides, it is found that the electron mobility of these two polymers is weakly dependent on the annealing temperature due to the near‐amorphous of polymer thin‐film. Revealing the Mechanism of Contrasting Charge Transport Properties for Phenyl and Thienyl Substituent Organic Semiconductors

Abstract:The aromatic substituents such as phenyl and thienyl have a direct impact on the structure-property relationship of conjugated semiconducting molecules and thus play a significant role in determining the performance of organic thin film transistors (OTFTs). To design a molecule with good charge transport properties, it is essential to understand the charge transfer process. Herein, through the study of two groups of classical OTFT materials with different substituents, we demonstrate the fundamental reasons for the contrasting carrier mobilities between the materials in each group by means of DFT calculations. The results from our theoretical analysis on the two groups of molecules provide very good estimates of their charge transfer properties and the numerical trend from our calculation is consistent with that from the corresponding experimental results. We reveal in detail the impacts of the subtle geometric differences caused by different substituents from two aspects including (i) the significant influence of steric hindrance on reorganization energy and (ii) the overlap of the adjacent molecular orbitals (MOs) on electron coupling. Overall, our systematic investigation into the charge transfer mechanism and geometry effects allows us to employ a reliable theoretical methodology for the prediction of the material performance, which is crucial for the design of high performance OTFT materials.
Modulating the Electronic and Solid-State Structure of Organic Semiconductors by Site-Specific Substitution: The Case of Tetrafluoropentacenes

Abstract:The properties as well as solid-state structures, singlet fission, and organic field-effect transistor (OFET) performance of three tetrafluoropentacenes (1,4,8,11: 10, 1,4,9,10: 11, 2,3,9,10: 12) are compared herein. The novel compounds 10 and 11 were synthesized in high purity from the corresponding 6,13-etheno-bridged precursors by reaction with dimethyl 1,2,4,5-tetrazine-3,6-dicarboxylate at elevated temperatures. Although most of the molecular properties of the compounds are similar, their chemical reactivity and crystal structures differ considerably. Isomer 10 undergoes the orbital symmetry forbidden thermal [4+4] dimerization, whereas 11 and 12 are much less reactive. The isomers 11 and 12 crystallize in a herringbone motif, but 10 prefers π-π stacking. Although the energy of the first electric dipole-allowed optical transition varies only within 370 cm-1 (0.05 eV) for the neutral compounds, this amounts to roughly 1600 cm-1 (0.20 eV) for radical cations and 1300 cm-1 (0.16 eV) for dications. Transient spectroscopy of films of 11 and 12 reveals singlet-fission time constants (91±11, 73±3 fs, respectively) that are shorter than for pentacene (112±9 fs). OFET devices constructed from 11 and 12 show close to ideal thin-film transistor (TFT) characteristics with electron mobilities of 2×10-3 and 6×10-2 cm2 V-1 s-1 , respectively.
Effects of polymer precursor conjugation length on the optoelectronic properties of fluorinated benzothiadiazole-based D-A systems

Abstract:Due to its high electronegativity and small atomic radius without undesirable steric hindrance, the incorporation of fluorine atoms onto the conjugated backbone has been proven to be a very effective way in tuning the energy levels of organic semiconductors. Herein, in this paper, 5-fluorobenzo[c][1,2,5]thiadizole is adopted as the electron deficient unit, thiophene and alkylthiophene as the donor units, and further thiophene and EDOT are taken as the peripheral donor units, one D-A-D and two D-π-A-π'-D fluorinated electrochromic polymer precursors were successfully synthesized via Stille coupling reaction, namely as F-BT, F-BT-Th, and F-BT-EDOT. Due to the elongation of the π-conjugated systems of precursors with stronger electron donating ability of EDOT unit, the oxidation potential of F-BT-EDOT precursor was further reduced to 0.56 V vs. Ag/AgCl accompanied with red-shifted electronic spectra. As electropolymerized P(F-BT-EDOT) also owned favorable redox activity and excellent redox stability (<2.33% electroactivity loss after 1000 cycles). At the same time, the optical band gap of P(F-BT-EDOT) (1.37 eV) is much lower than that of P(F-BT-Th) and P(F-BT) (1.62 eV), and the stable reversible electrochromic from dark green to dark blue was achieved with fast response time. In the near infrared region, P(F-BT-EDOT) shows intriguing overall electrochromic performances with a high optical contrast up to 33% and a coloration efficiency of 196.3 cm2/C at 1100 nm. It can be seen that the introduction of strong electron donor EDOT unit could bring a new breakthrough in the electrochromic performance of 5-fluorobenzo[c][1,2,5]thiadizole -based fluorinated D-A polymers and enhancement of their stability, and it is expected to be applied in the near infrared electrochromic devices.

Abstract:In this work, two fluorinated D-π-A-π-D type monomers, F-EDOT and FF-EDOT, were facilely synthesized by donor-acceptor-donor method via Stille coupling reaction, with monofluorinated benzothiadiazole and difluorinated benzothiadiazole as the acceptor units and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) as the donor units. The electrochemical polymerization behavior of the fluorinated monomers, electrochemical and electrochromic properties of the corresponding fluorinated D-A polymers were compared to study the effects of different fluorine atom numbers on the optoelectronic properties of the monomers and their resultant D-A polymers. The results show that the introduction of more F atoms into the conjugated backbone increases the oxidation potential of monomers, both of them have low initial oxidation potential (0.65 V/0.70 V). As in the case of monomers, the substitution of more F atoms also leads to the decreased HOMO energy level of the polymers, thus leading to the increased band gap energy of P(FF-EDOT) (1.39 eV). This result can be attributed to the deviation of planarity and the reduced effective conjugate length. As prepared fluorinated D-A polymers also have good adhesion on the electrode surface, favorable redox activity, and outstanding redox stability (the redox activity of P(F-EDOT) remains 99 % after 1000 cycles). At the same time, the fluorinated D-A polymers also show distinguish electrochromic properties under various external potentials; both the optical contrast and coloration efficiency decreased with the increase of F atom numbers, and the corresponding response time increased. As a result, both the fluorinated D-A polymers show light green in the neutral state, P(F-EDOT) shows more obvious electrochromic performance in the near infrared region (optical contrast: 35.02 %, coloration efficiency: 159.94 cm 2 C −1 , and quick response time: 0.2 s), accompanied with excellent discoloration stability and optical memory effect. The study of novel fluorinated-based electrochromic materials further expands the selection of acceptor units and the application prospect of electrochromic materials.
