Abstract:This paper addresses distributed transmit beamforming problems based on a mobile assister node. Assuming that the distance to the receiver and the direction-of-destination (DoD) can be estimated, a stop-and-go strategy is proposed for a mobile assister node such that it moves gradually along the direction towards the receiver and provides SNR feedback information for transmitters. By receiving the SNR feedback information at each step, the transmitting sensors update their phases to maximize the SNR at the assister end. We then show that when the assister node reaches a threshold distance, the maximum SNR at the assister implies an approximate optimum SNR at the receiver end. Thus, the transmit beamforming problem is solved though the receiver initially is out of the communication range of the transmitters and is not able to provide SNR feedback information.

Abstract:The paper studies the problem of distributed transmit beamforming with autonomous and self-organizing mobile antennas. The objective is to design a distributed algorithm for a network of autonomous mobile robots with carry-on antennas so that they can form a functional antenna array and cooperatively transmit messages to a remote station. Note that the spatial relationship of the antennas also contributes to the directionality of the reception or transmission of a signal. In the paper, by exploiting the mobility of the antennas, we show that optimal beamforming can be achieved by reconfiguring the spatial relationship of the mobile antennas in a completely distributed fashion. A probability-based coordination scheme utilizing only the signal-to-ratio (SNR) feedback from the receiver is presented to update the positions of the antennas ensuring that they eventually converge to a global optimal configuration maximizing the SNR at the receiver. It is noticed that the spatial configuration of the antennas can also address the phase synchronization issue in transmit beamforming.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the problem of achieving optimal transmit beamforming for a collection of wireless sensors. The objective is to design distributed algorithms running on each sensor (each carrying an antenna) such that the signals from all sensors combine constructively at the receiver end and thus, the received power is increased. Towards this goal, we propose two algorithms that are applicable to two types of sensor setups: Taking Turn Distributed Beamforming (TT-DB) for sensors with partial global knowledge and Random Grouping Distributed Beamforming (RG-DB) for sensors with no global knowledge. Both algorithms are iterative whereby each sensor adjusts its phase offset without directly communicating with each other. In each iteration, either one sensor or a subset of sensors are selected and then transmit the signals that are carefully crafted based on the SNR feedback from the receiver end. We have proved that guided by either algorithm, the signals from all sensor nodes converge to perfect phase coherence asymptotically, and our simulation results have shown that the convergence steps of both algorithms are linear with respect to the number of sensor nodes in the group.

Abstract:Scalar field mapping has many applications including environmental monitoring, search and rescue, etc. In such applications there is a need to achieve a certain level of confidence regarding the estimates at each location. In this paper, a cooperative and active sensing framework is developed to enable scalar field mapping using multiple mobile sensor nodes. The cooperative and active controller is designed via the real-time feedback of the sensing performance to steer the mobile sensors to new locations in order to improve the sensing quality. During the movement of the mobile sensors, the measurements from each sensor node and its neighbors are taken and fused with the corresponding confidences using distributed consensus filters. As a result an online map of the scalar field is built with a certain level of confidence of the estimates. We conducted computer simulations to validate and evaluate our proposed algorithms.

Abstract:Via collaborative beamforming, nodes in a wireless network are able to transmit a common message over long distances in an energy efficient fashion. However, the process of making available the same message to all collaborating nodes introduces delays. In this paper, a MAC-PHY cross-layer scheme is proposed that enables collaborative beamforming at significantly reduced collaboration overhead. It consists of two phases. In the first phase, nodes transmit locally in a random access time-slotted fashion. Simultaneous transmissions from multiple source nodes are viewed as linear mixtures of all transmitted packets. In the second phase, a set of collaborating nodes, acting as a distributed antenna system, beamform the received analog waveform to one or more faraway destinations. This step requires multiplication of the received analog waveform by a complex weight, which is independently computed by each cooperating node, and which allows packets bound to the same destination to add coherently at the destination node. Assuming that each node has access to location information, the proposed scheme can achieve high throughput, which in certain cases exceeds one. An analysis of the symbol error probability corresponding to the proposed scheme is provided.

Abstract:Collaborative beamforming (CB) has been widely used in a wireless sensor network (WSN) to improve the directivity of signals in long-distance transmission. CB performance has been analyzed for some specific node distributions such as Uniform and Gaussian distributions. However, the results obtained based on a particular distribution for a WSN under a specific condition may not be true for other WSNs under different conditions. This letter proposes a novel unified method to evaluate CB performance for various node distributions. The simulation results verify the proposed method.

Abstract:Beamforming is a signal processing technique which is aimed at focusing the transmission energy in the desired direction through the use of antenna arrays and phase alignment. In this paper we explore the benefits of using distributed antenna beamforming in multi-hop sensor wireless networks. The major challenge in using distributed beamforming in ad hoc wireless networks is that the relative disposition of wireless devices cannot be controlled with high precision as required by antenna arrays. We develop several optimization techniques for antenna radiation pattern generation in multi-hop ad hoc settings and analyze their effectiveness through simulations. In particular, we propose an optimization scheme for single hop beampattern generation and then show how to utilize it in a multi-hop environment.

Abstract:The energy consumption of cooperative beamforming was studied under given requirements on the end-to-end bit error rate （BER）,and the optimal numbers of cooperative node were obtained for different propagation environments and transmission distances. Considering both transmit and circuit energies, a practical energy consumption model of co- operative beamforming in WSN was first proposed, and then its closed-form approximate solution was obtained. Based on this model, the energy consumption of cooperative beamforming was minimized by optimizing the numbers of coop- erative nodes. Analysis and simulations show that over some distance ranges, cooperative beamforming can achieve en- ergy savings compared with non-cooperative and STBC-based cooperative systems. Moreover, it is showed that there are the optimal numbers of cooperative nodes to minimize the total energy consumption for different propagation environ- ments and transmission distances.

A Novel Approach for Establishing Connectivity in Partitioned Mobile Sensor Networks Using Beamforming Techniques

Abstract:Network connectivity is one of the major design issues in the context of mobile sensor networks. Due to diverse communication patterns, some nodes lying in high-traffic zones may consume more energy and eventually die out resulting in network partitioning. This phenomenon may deprive a large number of alive nodes of sending their important time critical data to the sink. The application of data caching in mobile sensor networks is exponentially increasing as a high-speed data storage layer. This paper presents a deep learning-based beamforming approach to find the optimal transmission strategies for cache-enabled backhaul networks. In the proposed scheme, the sensor nodes in isolated partitions work together to form a directional beam which significantly increases their overall communication range to reach out a distant relay node connected to the main part of the network. The proposed methodology of cooperative beamforming-based partition connectivity works efficiently if an isolated cluster gets partitioned with a favorably large number of nodes. We also present a new cross-layer method for link cost that makes a balance between the energy used by the relay. By directly adding the accessible auxiliary nodes to the set of routing links, the algorithm chooses paths which provide maximum dynamic beamforming usage for the intermediate nodes. The proposed approach is then evaluated through simulation results. The simulation results show that the proposed mechanism achieves up to 30% energy consumption reduction through beamforming as partition healing in addition to guarantee user throughput.

Abstract:This paper addresses the transmissions of a multi-antenna Base Station (BS), when communicating simultaneously with groups of radios in a multi-hop network of single-antenna radios. Each group is supposed to receive a distinct data stream, such that all members of the group receive the same packet at the same time. The intention is that each group will perform cooperative transmission in the next time slot or slots. We focus on just the first hop, in which the BS chooses the group members and beamforms to them, so that their individual signal to interference and noise ratios all exceed a minimum threshold. The problem we address, therefore, is a combination of spatial multiplexing and multicasting. Our approach does zero forcing on selected nodes and then checks that an adequate number of nodes in each group have at least the minimum signal-to-noise-and-interference ratio (SINR). Using simulation, we compare our approach to others and we consider the effects of errors in transmit-side channel state information.

Abstract:This paper considers N mobile nodes that move together in the vicinity of each other, whose initial poses as well as subsequent movements must be accurately tracked in real time with the assist of M(>=3) reference nodes. By engaging the neighboring mobile nodes in a simple but effective cooperation, and by exploiting both the time-of-arrival (TOA) information (between mobile nodes and reference nodes) and the received-signal-strength (RSS) information (between mobile nodes), an effective new localization strategy, termed cooperative TOA and RSS (COTAR), is developed. An optimal maximum likelihood detector is first formulated, followed by the derivation of a low-complexity iterative approach that can practically achieve the Cramer-Rao lower bound. Instead of using simplified channel models as in many previous studies, a sophisticated and realistic channel model is used, which can effectively account for the critical fact that the direct path is not necessarily the strongest path. Extensive simulations are conducted in static and mobile settings, and various practical issues and system parameters are evaluated. It is shown that COTAR significantly outperforms the existing strategies, achieving a localization accuracy of only a few tenths of a meter in clear environments and a couple of meters in heavily obstructed environments.

Abstract:RF energy harvesting is a promising potential solution to provide convenient and perpetual energy supplies to low-power wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we investigate the energy harvesting performance of a wireless sensor node powered by harvesting RF energy from existing multiuser MIMO system. Specifically, we propose a random unitary beamforming (RUB) based cooperative beam selection scheme to enhance the energy harvesting performance at the sensor. Under a constant total transmission power constraint, the multiuser MIMO system tries to select a maximal number of active beams for data transmission, while satisfying the energy harvesting requirement at the sensor. We derive the exact closed-form expression for the distribution function of harvested energy in a coherence time over Rayleigh fading channels. We further investigate the performance tradeoff of the average harvested energy at the sensor versus the sum-rate of the multiuser MIMO system.

Abstract:Coherent communications aim to support higher data rates and extended connectivity at lower power consumption compared with traditional point-to-point transmissions. The typical setting of coherent communication schemes is based on a single data stream with multiple transmitters and a single receiver. This paper studies the case of multiple concurrent data streams, each with multiple transmitters and multiple receivers, in self-organizing wireless networks. A distributed optimization solution based on joint network formation and beamforming is developed for coherent group communications in a network of nodes that need to communicate over long distances. This solution significantly improves the power gain for a single data stream and the signal-to-interference-ratio for multiple data streams compared to point-to-point communications. These gains are in turn translated to improvements in communication range, power efficiency, reliability, and throughput. In this multi-layer network optimization solution, nodes coordinate with each other in a distributed manner to form transmitter and receiver groups, and communicate with each other coherently over long distances. The coherent beamforming protocol is optimized for given transmitter and receiver groups, whereas the network formation protocol is optimized to determine these groups. By using single-antenna communication nodes, the proposed optimization solution provides a major gain in network communications and outperforms other benchmark combinations of beamforming and network formation protocols.

Abstract:To obtain the good sum-rate performance in multi-cell multi-user wireless networks with frequency reuse,coordinated beamforming design problem of co-channel interference mitigation was studied.Theoretical analysis results with the game theory show that,the collaborative beamforming vector of the optimal performance is a linear combination of selfishness and altruism strategy.A beamforming vector iteration algorithm to maximize sum-rate was presented,and estimation method about composite coefficient based on the statistic of channel state information was proposed.Finally， the results of simulation assess the performance of the algorithm and show convergence of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Distributed beamforming is a form of collaborative communication, in which wireless nodes adjust the phases of their transmitted signals so that the signals are combined coherently at the destination. This enhances the received signal power and extends the communication range. In this paper, we propose a transmit beamforming method that does not require any explicit feedback information from the receiver for the phase adjustment. Instead, sensors use phase-locked loops (PLL) to synchronize their carriers to the received reference signal broadcast by the destination / receiver. Based on the fact that the change of phase over some distance depends not only on the distance but also on the frequency, the destination indirectly adjusts the sensors'phase by changing the frequency of the reference signal. The destination scans all the frequencies within a feasible range to find the optimal frequency at which the received power gets its maximum. The advantage of this method is that it does not require any direct interaction among the sensors and feedback between the sensors and the destination. Every sensor adjusts its own phase independently and simultaneously. Therefore, the proposed method has good scalability and is suitable for the distributed system. We also derive some performance analysis of the method and present simulation results that validate the analysis.
Optimal Beamforming in Cooperative Cognitive Backscatter Networks for Wireless-Powered IoT

Abstract:Cognitive backscatter communication enables wireless powered backscatter devices (BDs) to transmit information by modulating ambient radio frequency (RF) carriers, which shares both the same spectrum and the same radio-frequency (RF) source as the legacy (ambient) system, thus has become a promising technology for energy-and spectrum-efficient Internet-of-things (IoT) communications. In this paper, we consider a cooperative cognitive backscatter network (CCBN) consisting of a multi-antenna RF-Source, multiple (ambient) BDs, and a multi-antenna cooperative receiver (C-RX). We derive the achievable rates for the C-RX decoding the direct-link signal from the RF-Source and the backscatter-link signal from all BDs, respectively. We further formulate an optimization problem to maximize the backscatter-link sum rate by optimizing the beamforming weights (i.e., the precoding matrix) subject to the RF-Source’s minimum rate requirement and the BDs’ minimum energy requirements. Based on the sequential parametric convex approximation (SPCA) method, we propose an algorithm to find the optimal solution to the original non-convex problem, by using a sequence of semidefinite programming (SDP) problems to approximate the original problem iteratively. Finally, extensive numerical results show that the optimal beamforming solution enhances the BDs’ sum rate significantly compared to the omnidirectional transmission, and demonstrate the tradeoff among the direct-link rate of the RF-Source, the sum rate of all BDs, as well as the energy requirements at the BDs.
Coordinated Beamforming For Wireless Multicast Cell With Nonregenerative Multi-Antenna Relay

Abstract:This paper considers the wireless multicast cell, in which two source nodes with multiple antennas communicate with two destinations over a common medium simultaneously assisted by a multi-antenna relay node. Assume that the sources and relay have individual power constraints. The purpose of this work is to develop an optimal algorithm to compute the source beamforming vectors and the relay beamforming matrix to maximize the system sum-rate, subject to the power constraints in the sources and relay. The problem is nonconvex and apparently has no simple solution. In this paper, We first develop the beamforming vectors at the sources, and then explore the linear beamforming matrix for the nonregenerative relay, Finally, we present a coordinated optimal algorithm to jointly optimize the vectors and matrix, which performance is compared with the conventional methods. Simulations demonstrate that our algorithm outperforms the conventional methods.

Abstract:Fast and efficient beamforming is crucial for providing reliable service for users with high mobility in cell-free millimeter wave (mmWave) systems. This letter offers a novel dynamic beamforming framework and develops a location-aware coordinated beamforming algorithm for mobile users (MUs). Specifically, based on the uplink and downlink decoupling technique, we employ a fingerprint-based localization method to achieve rapid localization for MUs. Following this, we design a beamforming algorithm implemented by deep reinforcement learning (DRL), which utilizes localization information to achieve coordinated beamforming among access points (APs). Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the designed algorithms compared to existing methods.

Abstract:Hybrid active and passive wireless sensor networks (HWSNs) gain advantages in extending the network lifetime and reducing the overall cost. Because the passive sensors without battery harvest the energy from distributed active sensor signal beam, and only a few active sensors can maintain a large-scale network. Thus, how to track the passive sensor’s location is essential for network management. Since the active sensors are sparsely deployed, cooperative localization which employs passive sensors to locate themselves together is a promising solution. In this paper, we analyze the energy beam generated by the active sensors on the cooperative localization accuracy of the passive sensors. We consider the spatial-temporal cooperative localization based on the received signal strength (RSS) model with unknown Tx power information of each sensor due to the limited processing capabilities, circuit complexity and energy constraints. We formulate the Fisher information matrix (FIM) and the corresponding Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for the static full connected network and dynamic spatial-temporal recursive network. Accordingly, energy beamforming schemes are proposed to optimize localization accuracy and energy efficiency problems. For the optimal localization problem, we derive the closed-form solution of the optimal energy beamforming wave. For the optimal energy efficiency problem, we propose a semi-definite programming (SDP) solution to achieve optimal energy consumption with a self-calibration method, which can address the over-relax problem. Extensive simulation results indicate that our proposed beamforming schemes have high localization accuracy and lower power consumption compared with the existing power allocation-based schemes.
