Abstract:In this paper, we consider the numerical solutions of the time fractional sub-diffusion equation with the variable coefficient subject to both Dirichlet boundary conditions and Neumann boundary conditions. A compact difference scheme is proposed for solving the equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The unconditional stability and the global convergence of the scheme in the maximum norm are proved rigorously with the help of the newly introduced norms regarding to the variable coefficient. The convergence order is O(τ2-α+h4), where τ is the temporal grid size, α is the order of fractional derivative and h is the spatial grid size. Besides, a box-type scheme is derived by introducing new intermediate variable for the problem with Neumann boundary conditions. The stability and the global convergence of box-type scheme in maximum norm are also presented. Numerical experiments are carried out to confirm the theoretical results of the proposed schemes.

First, we propose a Crank-Nicolson scheme without correction for problems with regularity assumptions only on the source term. Second, since the existing Crank-Nicolson schemes have a severe reduction of convergence order for solving sub-diffusion equations with singular source terms in time, we then extend our scheme and propose a new Crank-Nicolson scheme for problems with singular source terms in time. Second-order error estimates for both the two Crank-Nicolson schemes are rigorously established by a Laplace transform technique, which are numerically verified by some numerical examples.

Abstract:Finite difference scheme for the variable coefficients subdiffusion equations with non-smooth solutions is constructed and analyzed. The spatial derivative is discretized on a uniform mesh, and L1 approximation is used for the discretization of the fractional time derivative on a possibly graded mesh. Stability of the proposed scheme is given using the discrete energy method. The numerical scheme is O (N−min{2−α,rα}) accurate in time, where α (0 < α < 1) is the order of the fractional time derivative, r is an index of the mesh partition, and it is second order accurate in space. Extension to multi-term time-fractional problems with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions is also discussed, with the stability and error estimate proved both in the discrete l2-norm and the l∞-norm on the nonuniform temporal mesh. Abstract:We investigate a second-order accurate time-stepping scheme for solving a time-fractional diffusion equation with a Caputo derivative of order . The basic idea of our scheme is based on local integration followed by linear interpolation. It reduces to the standard Crank–Nicolson scheme in the classical diffusion case, that is, as . Using a novel approach, we show that the proposed scheme is -robust and second-order accurate in the -norm, assuming a suitable time-graded mesh. For completeness, we use the Galerkin finite element method for the spatial discretization and discuss the error analysis under reasonable regularity assumptions on the given data. Some numerical results are presented at the end.

Abstract:Numerical solution and parameter estimation for a type of fractional diffusion equation are considered. Firstly, the symmetrical compact difference scheme is applied to solve the forward problem of the fractional diffusion equation. The stability and convergence of the symmetrical difference scheme are presented. Then, the Bayesian method is considered to estimate the unknown fractional order α of the fractional diffusion equation model. To validate the efficiency of the symmetrical numerical scheme and the estimation method, some simulation tests are considered. The simulation results demonstrate the accuracy of the compact difference scheme and show that the proposed estimation algorithm can provide effective statistical characteristics of the parameter.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a fast Crank–Nicolson L1 finite difference scheme for two-dimensional time variable fractional mobile/immobile diffusion equations. First, we discretize the time fractional derivative by the Crank–Nicolson formula on uniform meshes, and discretize the spatial derivative by the central difference quotient formula on uniform meshes to obtain a numerical scheme. Then, the Von-Neumann stability analysis method is used to analyze the stability and the optimal error estimate. On the other hand, we optimize the numerical format based on the exponential-sum-approximation technique, effectively reducing the amount of computation and storage. Finally, numerical examples validate the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, for variable coefficient Riesz fractional diffusion equations in one and two dimensions, we first design a second-order implicit difference scheme by using the Crank-Nicolson method and a fractional centered difference formula for time and space variables, respectively. With the compact operator acting on, a novel fourth-order finite difference scheme is subsequently constructed. Solvability, stability and convergence of these schemes are theoretically analyzed. For these discretized linear systems, the fast implementation with preconditioners based on sine transform is proposed, which has the computational complexity of O(nlog⁡n) per iteration and the memory requirement of O(n) , where n represents the total number of the spatial grid nodes. Finally, numerical experiments are performed to illustrate the preciseness and effectiveness of these new techniques.

Abstract:The Crank-Nicolson (short for C-N) scheme for solving {\it backward stochastic differential equation} (BSDE), driven by Brownian motions, was first developed by the authors W. Zhao, L. Chen and S. Peng [SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 28 (2006), 1563--1581], and numerical experiments showed that the accuracy of this C-N scheme was of second order for solving BSDE. This C-N scheme was extended to solve decoupled {\it forward-backward stochastic differential equations} (FBSDEs) by W. Zhao, Y. Li and Y. Fu [Sci. China. Math., 57 (2014), 665--686], and it was numerically shown that the accuracy of the extended C-N scheme was also of second order. To our best knowledge, among all one-step (two-time level) numerical schemes with second-order accuracy for solving BSDE or FBSDEs, such as the ones in the above two papers and the one developed by the authors D. Crisan and K. Manolarakis [Ann. Appl. Probab., 24, 2 (2014), 652--678], the C-N scheme is the simplest one in applications. The theoretical proofs of second-order error estimates reported in the literature for these schemes for solving decoupled FBSDEs did not include the C-N scheme. The purpose of this work is to theoretically analyze the error estimate of the C-N scheme for solving decoupled FBSDEs. Based on the Taylor and Itô-Taylor expansions, the Malliavin calculus theory (e.g., the multiple Malliavin integration-by-parts formula), and our new truncation error cancelation techniques, we rigorously prove that the strong convergence rate of the C-N scheme is of second order for solving decoupled FBSDEs, which fills the gap between the second-order numerical and theoretical analysis of the C-N scheme.

Abstract:This study investigates a class of initial-boundary value problems pertaining to the time-fractional mixed sub-diffusion and diffusion-wave equation (SDDWE). To facilitate the development of a numerical method and analysis, the original problem is transformed into a new integro-differential model which includes the Caputo derivatives and the Riemann-Liouville fractional integrals with orders belonging to (0,1). By providing an a priori estimate of the solution, we have established the existence and uniqueness of a numerical solution for the problem. We propose a second-order method to approximate the fractional Riemann-Liouville integral and employ an L2 type formula to approximate the Caputo derivative. This results in a method with a temporal accuracy of second-order for approximating the considered model. The proof of the unconditional stability of the proposed difference scheme is established. Moreover, we demonstrate the proposed method's potential to construct and analyze a second-order L2-type numerical scheme for a broader class of the time-fractional mixed SDDWEs with multi-term time-fractional derivatives. Numerical results are presented to assess the accuracy of the method and validate the theoretical findings.

Abstract:In this article, we develop a compact finite difference scheme for a variable-order-time fractional-sub-diffusion equation of a fourth-order derivative term via order reduction. The proposed scheme exhibits fourth-order convergence in space and second-order convergence in time. Additionally, we provide a detailed proof for the existence and uniqueness, as well as the stability of scheme, along with a priori error estimates. Finally, we validate our theoretical results through various numerical computations.

Abstract:Thanks to the singularity of the solution of linear subdiffusion problems, most time-stepping methods on uniform meshes can result in $O(\tau)$ accuracy where $\tau$ denotes the time step. The present work aims to discover the reason why some type of Crank-Nicolson schemes (the averaging Crank-Nicolson scheme) for the subdiffusion can only yield $O(\tau^\alpha)$$(\alpha<1)$ accuracy, which is much lower than the desired. The existing well developed error analysis for the subdiffusion, which has been successfully applied to many time-stepping methods such as the fractional BDF-$p (1\leq p\leq 6)$, all requires singular points be out of the path of contour integrals involved. The averaging Crank-Nicolson scheme in this work is quite natural but fails to meet this requirement. By resorting to the residue theorem, some novel sharp error analysis is developed in this study, upon which correction methods are further designed to obtain the optimal $O(\tau^2)$ accuracy. All results are verified by numerical tests.

Abstract:Finite difference method as a popular numerical method has been widely used to solve fractional diffusion equations. In the general spatial error analyses, an assumption $u\in C^{4}(\bar{\Omega})$ is needed to preserve $\mathcal{O}(h^{2})$ convergence when using central finite difference scheme to solve fractional sub-diffusion equation with Laplace operator, but this assumption is somewhat strong, where $u$ is the exact solution and $h$ is the mesh size. In this paper, a novel analysis technique is proposed to show that the spatial convergence rate can reach $\mathcal{O}(h^{\min(\sigma+\frac{1}{2}-\epsilon,2)})$ in both $l^{2}$-norm and $l^{\infty}$-norm in one-dimensional domain when the initial value and source term are both in $\hat{H}^{\sigma}(\Omega)$ but without any regularity assumption on the exact solution, where $\sigma\geq 0$ and $\epsilon>0$ being arbitrarily small. After making slight modifications on the scheme, acting on the initial value and source term, the spatial convergence rate can be improved to $\mathcal{O}(h^{2})$ in $l^{2}$-norm and $\mathcal{O}(h^{\min(\sigma+\frac{3}{2}-\epsilon,2)})$ in $l^{\infty}$-norm. It's worth mentioning that our spatial error analysis is applicable to high dimensional cube domain by using the properties of tensor product. Moreover, two kinds of averaged schemes are provided to approximate the Riemann--Liouville fractional derivative, and $\mathcal{O}(\tau^{2})$ convergence is obtained for all $\alpha\in(0,1)$. Finally, some numerical experiments verify the effectiveness of the built theory.

Abstract:One-dimensional fractional anomalous sub-diffusion equations on an unbounded domain are considered in our work. Beginning with the derivation of the exact artificial boundary conditions, the original problem on an unbounded domain is converted into mainly solving an initial-boundary value problem on a finite computational domain. The main contribution of our work, as compared with the previous work, lies in the reduction of fractional differential equations on an unbounded domain by using artificial boundary conditions and construction of the corresponding finite difference scheme with the help of method of order reduction. The difficulty is the treatment of Neumann condition on the artificial boundary, which involves the time-fractional derivative operator. The stability and convergence of the scheme are proven using the discrete energy method. Two numerical examples clarify the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper investigates a nonlinear time-fractional mixed sub-diffusion and diffusion-wave equation with delay. The problem is particularly challenging due to its nonlinear nature, the presence of a time delay, and the incorporation of both fractional diffusion and fractional wave terms, introducing computational complexities for numerical analysis. To address this, we transform the model into a new generalized form involving Riemann–Liouville fractional integrals and a Caputo derivative of order α∈(0,1) . Subsequently, a temporal second-order linearized difference scheme is presented to approximate the model, and its unconditional stability is rigorously proven based on discrete Gronwall's inequality. To reduce computational and storage costs, we extend the discussion to a fast variant of the proposed difference scheme. The sum of exponentials approach is employed to approximate the kernel function in fractional-order operators, leading to fast difference analogs for the Riemann–Liouville fractional integral and the Caputo derivative. A fast variant of the developed direct method is introduced based on these analogs. Numerical results are provided to validate our theoretical findings and assess the accuracy and efficiency of the difference schemes.

Abstract:Two numerical schemes were developed for both spatially and tenporally fractional advection-dispersion equations , respectively. By applying both schemes to the same test case, we analyzed the phenomena of abnormal diffusion resulting from variations of the fractional order of relevant derivatives, and confirmed the accurate match between the solutions of our new schemes and the traditional one. If the fractional orders of spatially and tenporally fractional advection-dispersion equations are integer, the calculated results of both spatially and tenporally fractional advection-dispersion equations are the same as the calculated result of integer order advection-dispersion equation, which indicates that the two numerical schemes we developed are feasible, and the inter order advection-dispersion is a special case of fractional advection-dispersion equation. Compared with normal diffusion, the lower the fractional order of time fractional advection-dispersion equation is, the more slowly the solute diffuse, which represents long tail. Correspondingly, the lower the fractional order of space fractional advection-dispersion equation is, the more rapidly the solute diffuse, which demonstrates that the non-local correlation on space is more intense.

Abstract:In this article, a nonstandard finite difference scheme is proposed for solving the distributed order time-fractional reaction–diffusion equation. In this equation, the time-fractional derivative is defined in the Caputo sense. We decompose the equation into two sub-equations and use the exact finite difference scheme with the Clenshaw–Curtis quadrature for sub-equations, then combine them to obtain the numerical method. The term involving the time distributed-order derivative is discretized using the Clenshaw–Curtis quadrature, and the Caputo fractional derivative is approximated by the Grünwald difference operator. We show that the presented scheme is uniquely solvable, unconditionally stable, and convergent. Numerical experiments are carried out to inspect the effectiveness of the presented scheme.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, we study a time-fractional diffusion equation with a time-invariant type variable fractional order. We propose an implicit finite difference scheme to approximate the variable-order Caputo fractional derivative, while the central difference method is employed to discretize the spatial differential operator. A novel decomposition of the temporal discretization coefficients is adopted to overcome their loss of monotonicity due to the impact of the variable order and thus to support the proof of the convergence and unconditionally stability of the numerical scheme. Numerical examples are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.</p>

The difficulty caused by the spatially variable coefficients is successfully handled. The unique solvability, stability and convergence of the finite difference scheme are proved by use of the Fourier method. The obtained theoretical results are supported by numerical experiments.
