Abstract:In this paper we present and analyze a weighted residual a posteriori error estimate for an optimal control problem. The problem involves a nondifferentiable cost functional, a state equation with an integral fractional Laplacian, and control constraints. We employ subdifferentiation in the context of nondifferentiable convex analysis to obtain first-order optimality conditions. Piecewise linear polynomials are utilized to approximate the solutions of the state and adjoint equations. The control variable is discretized using the variational discretization method. Upper and lower bounds for the a posteriori error estimate of the finite element approximation of the optimal control problem are derived. In the region where 3/2 < alpha < 2, the residuals do not satisfy the L2(Omega) regularity. To address this issue, an additional weight is included in the weighted residual estimator, which is based on a power of the distance from the mesh skeleton. Furthermore, we propose an h-adaptive algorithm driven by the posterior view error estimator, utilizing the Dorfler labeling criterion. The convergence analysis results show that the approximation sequence generated by the adaptive algorithm converges at the optimal algebraic rate. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted to validate the theoretical results.

Abstract:We investigate the application of a posteriori error estimates to a fractional optimal control problem with pointwise control constraints. Specifically, we address a problem in which the state equation is formulated as an integral form of the fractional Laplacian equation, with the control variable embedded within the state equation as a coefficient. We propose two distinct finite element discretization approaches for an optimal control problem. The first approach employs a fully discrete scheme where the control variable is discretized using piecewise constant functions. The second approach, a semi-discrete scheme, does not discretize the control variable. Using the first-order optimality condition, the second-order optimality condition, and a solution regularity analysis for the optimal control problem, we devise a posteriori error estimates. We subsequently demonstrate the reliability and efficiency of the proposed error estimators. Based on the established error estimates framework, an adaptive refinement strategy is developed to help achieve the optimal convergence rate. The effectiveness of the refinement strategy is verified by numerical experiments.

Abstract:In this paper we study the mixed finite element discretization for general optimal control problems governed by nonlinear elliptic equations. We derive a posteriori error estimates for the coupled state and control approximation. Such a posteriori error estimates can be used to construct more efficient and reliable adaptive mixed finite element method for optimal control problems. Next we introduce an adaptive algorithm to guide the mesh refinement. Finally, we present a numerical example which confirm our theoretical results.

Abstract:We analyze the finite element discretization of distributed elliptic optimal control problems with variable energy regularization, where the usual $L^2(\Omega)$ norm regularization term with a constant regularization parameter $\varrho$ is replaced by a suitable representation of the energy norm in $H^{-1}(\Omega)$ involving a variable, mesh-dependent regularization parameter $\varrho(x)$. It turns out that the error between the computed finite element state $\widetilde{u}_{\varrho h}$ and the desired state $\overline{u}$ (target) is optimal in the $L^2(\Omega)$ norm provided that $\varrho(x)$ behaves like the local mesh size squared. This is especially important when adaptive meshes are used in order to approximate discontinuous target functions. The adaptive scheme can be driven by the computable and localizable error norm $\| \widetilde{u}_{\varrho h} - \overline{u}\|_{L^2(\Omega)}$ between the finite element state $\widetilde{u}_{\varrho h}$ and the target $\overline{u}$. The numerical results not only illustrate our theoretical findings, but also show that the iterative solvers for the discretized reduced optimality system are very efficient and robust.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the convergence analysis of adaptive finite element method for elliptic optimal control problems with pointwise control constraints. We use variational discretization concept to discretize the control variable and piecewise linear and continuous finite elements to approximate the state variable. Based on the well-established convergence theory of AFEM for elliptic boundary value problems, we rigorously prove the convergence and quasi-optimality of AFEM for optimal control problems with respect to the state and adjoint state variables, by using the so-called perturbation argument. Numerical experiments confirm our theoretical analysis.

We first derive Pontryagin's maximum principle and construct the semidiscrete finite element approximation scheme for our impulsive optimal control problem. Then, the error estimates for optimal control u, the related state y and the adjoint state φ will be obtained. Finally, an efficient algorithm for our numerical experiment is designed, which verifies the theoretical results obtained in this paper.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of semidiscrete finite element approximation of time optimal control problem governed by semilinear heat equation with nonsmooth initial data. When the control is acted locally, an error estimate for the optimal time is obtained by making use of the approximation results for the equations. Moreover, with the help of Pontryagin’s maximum principle and the unique continuation property for the heat equation, a better error estimate for the optimal time can be derived when the control is acted globally into the state equation.

Abstract:In this paper we propose a new finite element method for solving elliptic optimal control problems with pointwise state constraints, including the distributed controls and the Dirichlet or Neumann boundary controls. The main idea is to use energy space regularizations in the objective functional, while the equivalent representations of the energy space norms, i.e., the $H^{-1}(\Omega)$-norm for the distributed control, the $H^{1/2}(\Gamma)$-norm for the Dirichlet control and the $H^{-1/2}(\Gamma)$-norm for the Neumann control, enable us to transform the optimal control problem into an elliptic variational inequality involving only the state variable. The elliptic variational inequalities are second order for the three cases, and include additional equality constraints for Dirichlet or Neumann boundary control problems. Standard $C^0$ finite elements can be used to solve the resulted variational inequality. We provide preliminary a priori error estimates for the new algorithm for solving distributed control problems. Extensive numerical experiments are carried out to validate the accuracy of the new algorithm.

Abstract:This article discusses the quasi-optimality of adaptive nonconforming finite element methods for distributed optimal control problems governed by m-harmonic operators for m = 1 , 2 . A variational discretization approach is employed and the state and adjoint variables are discretized using nonconforming finite elements. Error equivalence results at the continuous and discrete levels lead to a priori and a posteriori error estimates for the optimal control problem. The general axiomatic framework that includes stability, reduction, discrete reliability, and quasi-orthogonality establishes the quasi-optimality. Numerical results demonstrate the theoretically predicted orders of convergence and the efficiency of the adaptive estimator.

Abstract:We propose and analyze a posteriori error estimators for an optimal control problem that involves an elliptic partial differential equation as state equation and a control variable that enters the state equation as a coefficient; pointwise constraints on the control variable are considered as well. We consider two different strategies to approximate optimal variables: a fully discrete scheme in which the admissible control set is discretized with piecewise constant functions and a semi-discrete scheme where the admissible control set is not discretized; the latter scheme being based on the so-called variational discretization approach. We design, for each solution technique, an a posteriori error estimator and show, in two- and three-dimensional Lipschitz polygonal/polyhedral domains (not necessarily convex), that the proposed error estimator is reliable and efficient. We design, based on the devised estimators, adaptive strategies that deliver optimal experimental rates of convergence for the performed numerical examples.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the quasi-optimality of an adaptive nonconforming FEM for a distributed optimal control problem governed by the Stokes equations. The nonconforming lowest order Crouzeix-Raviart element and piecewise constant spaces are used to discretize the velocity and pressure variables, respectively. The control variable is discretized using a variational approach. We present error equivalence results at both continuous and discrete levels, leading to a priori and a posteriori error estimates. The quasi-optimal convergence rates of the adaptive algorithm are established based on a general axiomatic framework that includes stability, reduction, discrete reliability, and quasi-orthogonality.

Abstract:An a posteriori error estimator is obtained for a nonconforming finite element approximationof a linear elliptic problem, which is derived from a corresponding unboundeddomain problem by applying a nonlocal approximate artificial boundary condition. Ourmethod can be easily extended to obtain a class of a posteriori error estimators for variousconforming and nonconforming finite element approximations of problems with differentartificial boundary conditions. The reliability and efficiency of our a posteriori error estimatorare rigorously proved and are verified by numerical examples.

Abstract:We derive a posteriori error estimates for control-constrained, linear-quadratic optimal control problems. The error is measured in a norm which is motivated by the objective. Our abstract error estimator is separated into three contributions: the error in the variational inequality (i.e., in the optimality condition for the control) and the errors in the state and adjoint equation. Hence, one can use well-established estimators for the differential equations. We show that the abstract error estimator is reliable and efficient if the utilized estimators for the differential equations have these properties. We apply the error estimator to two distributed optimal control problems with distributed and boundary observation, respectively. Numerical examples exhibit a good error reduction if we use the local error contributions for an adaptive mesh refinement.

Abstract:In two and three dimensional Lipschitz, but not necessarily convex, polytopal domains, we devise and analyze a reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimator for a semilinear optimal control problem; control constraints are also considered. We consider a fully discrete scheme that discretizes the state and adjoint equations with piecewise linear functions and the control variable with piecewise constant functions. The devised error estimator can be decomposed as the sum of three contributions which are associated to the discretization of the state and adjoint equations and the control variable. We extend our results to a scheme that approximates the control variable with piecewise linear functions and also to a scheme that approximates the solution to a nondifferentiable optimal control problem. We illustrate the theory with two and three-dimensional numerical examples.

Abstract:In this paper, we study adaptive finite element approximations in a perturbation framework, which makes use of the existing adaptive finite element analysis of a linear symmetric elliptic problem. We prove the convergence and complexity of adaptive finite element methods for a class of elliptic partial differential equations. For illustration, we apply the general approach to obtain the convergence and complexity of adaptive finite element methods for a nonsymmetric problem, a nonlinear problem as well as an unbounded coefficient eigenvalue problem.
