Abstract:In this study we consider the single-machine scheduling problem with a sum-of-processing-times-based learning effect. The sum-of-processing-times-based learning effect of a job is assumed to be a function of the sum of the normal processing times of the already processed jobs. We prove that the shortest processing time (SPT) rule is optimal for the sum of completion times square minimization problem. We also show by examples that the optimal schedule for the classical version of the problem is not optimal in the presence of a sum-of-processing-times-based learning effect for the following three objective functions: the weighted sum of completion times, the maximum lateness and the number of tardy jobs. But for some special cases, we prove that the weighted shortest processing time (WSPT) rule, the earliest due date (EDD) rule and Moore’s algorithm can construct an optimal schedule for the problem to minimize these objective functions, respectively.

Abstract:This paper deals with single-machine scheduling problems with a more general learning effect based on sum-of-processing-time. In this study, sum-of-processing-time-based learning effect means that the processing time of a job is defined by a decreasing function of the total normal processing time of jobs that come before it in the sequence. Results show that even with the introduction of the sum-of-processing-time-based learning effect to job processing times, single-machine makespan minimization problems remain polynomially solvable. The curves of the optimal schedule of a total completion time minimization problem are V-shaped with respect to job normal processing times.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the scheduling problem with a general exponential learning effect and past-sequence-dependent (p-s-d) setup times. By the general exponential learning effect, we mean that the processing time of a job is defined by an exponent function of the total weighted normal processing time of the already processed jobs and its position in a sequence, where the weight is a position-dependent weight. The setup times are proportional to the length of the already processed jobs. We consider the following objective functions: the makespan, the total completion time, the sum of the δ⩾0th power of completion times, the total weighted completion time and the maximum lateness. We show that the makespan minimization problem, the total completion time minimization problem and the sum of the quadratic job completion times minimization problem can be solved by the smallest (normal) processing time first (SPT) rule, respectively. We also show that the total weighted completion time minimization problem and the maximum lateness minimization problem can be solved in polynomial time under certain conditions.

Abstract:In this paper we consider several single-machine scheduling problems with general learning effects. By general learning effects, we mean that the processing time of a job depends not only on its scheduled position, but also on the total normal processing time of the jobs already processed. We show that the scheduling problems of minimization of the makespan, the total completion time and the sum of the θth (θ⩾0) power of job completion times can be solved in polynomial time under the proposed models. We also prove that some special cases of the total weighted completion time minimization problem and the maximum lateness minimization problem can be solved in polynomial time.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problem of simultaneous determination of optimal due dates and optimal schedule for the single machine problem with multiple common due dates. The penalty for a job is assumed to be a linear function of the due date and the earliness/tardiness for the job. The objective function is to minimize the total penalty for all jobs. We show that with the introduction of learning to job processing times the problem remains polynomially solvable for a given number of multiple common due dates.

Abstract:We consider a single-machine common due-window assignment scheduling problem, in which the processing time of a job is a function of its position in a sequence and its resource allocation. The window location and size, along with the associated job schedule that minimizes a certain cost function, are to be determined. This function is made up of costs associated with the window location, window size, earliness, and tardiness. For two different processing time functions, we provide a polynomial time algorithm to find the optimal job sequence and resource allocation, respectively.

Abstract:In a manufacturing system workers are involved in doing the same job or activity repeatedly. Hence, the workers start learning more about the job or activity. Because of the learning, the time to complete the job or activity starts decreasing, which is known as “learning effect”. In this paper, an exponential sum-of-actual-processing-time based learning effect is introduced into single-machine scheduling. By the exponential sum-of-actual-processing-time based learning effect, we mean that the processing time of a job is defined by an exponential function of the sum-of-the-actual-processing-time of the already processed jobs. Under the proposed learning model, we show that under a sufficient condition, the makespan minimization problem, the sum of the θth (θ>0) power of completion times minimization problem, and some special cases of the total weighted completion time minimization problem and the maximum lateness minimization problem remain polynomially solvable.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new scheduling model with an exponential sum-cf-processing-time based learning effect in which the actual processing time of a job is defined by an exponential function of the total normal processing time of the already processed jobs. We show that even with the introduction of the new learning effect to job processing times, single machine problems to minimize makespan and the sum of the 9th power of the completion times remain polynomially solvable. In addition, we show that the problems to minimize total weighted completion time and maximum lateness are polynomially solvable under certain agreeable conditions. Abstract:In this paper we consider the single-machine scheduling problem with a time-dependent learning effect. The time-dependent learning effect of a job is assumed to be a function of the total normal processing time of the jobs scheduled in front of the job. We show by examples that the optimal schedule for the classical version of the problem is not optimal in the presence of a time-dependent learning effect for the following three objective functions: the weighted sum of completion times, the maximum lateness and the number of tardy jobs. But for some special cases, we prove that the weighted shortest processing time (WSPT) rule, the earliest due date (EDD) rule and Moore's Algorithm can construct an optimal schedule for the problem to minimize these objective functions, respectively. We use these three rules as heuristics for the general cases and analyze their worst-case error bounds. We also provide computational results to evaluate the performance of the heuristics.

Abstract:Learning effect is a phenomenon in industrial processes that a machine (plant, worker, etc) can improve its productivity continuously with time, that is the actual processing time of a job decreases after the machine (plant, worker, etc) processes other jobs and gains some experiences. We study single machine scheduling problems with sum-of-processing-time based and job-dependent learning effect. The objectives are to minimize the maximum lateness, the number of tardy jobs, and total weighted completion time. By performing reductions from equal cardinality partition problem, we prove that these problems under investigation are all NP-hard. Two special cases that can be solved in polynomial time are also presented.

Abstract:In classical scheduling,the processing time of a job is a constant,but in modern production process,the processing time of a job is affected by many factors. Hence,in this paper we study scheduling problems jobs with learning effect and controllable processing times,where the processing time of a job is the function of its position in a sequence and its controllable variable. Our target is to find the optimal se-quence and controllable variables so as to minimize the following objective functions:a cost containing makespan and total controllable cost,a cost containing total completion time and total controllable cost,a cost containing total absolute differences in completion times and total controllable cost. We prove that the problem is modeled as an assignment problem,and thus can be solved in polynomial time. We also give a numerical example.

Abstract:This paper studies the single-machine scheduling problem with truncated learning effect, time-dependent processing time, and past-sequence-dependent delivery time. The delivery time is the time that the job is delivered to the customer after processing is complete. The goal is to determine an optimal job schedule to minimize the total weighted completion time and maximum tardiness. In order to solve the general situation of the problem, we propose a branch-and-bound algorithm and other heuristic algorithms. Computational experiments also prove the effectiveness of the given algorithms.

Abstract:This paper addresses single-machine scheduling problems under the consideration of learning effect and resource allocation in a group technology environment. In the proposed model of this paper the actual processing times of jobs depend on the job position, the group position, and the amount of resource allocated to them concurrently. Learning effect and two resource allocation functions are examined for minimizing the weighted sum of makespan and total resource cost, and the weighted sum of total completion time and total resource cost. We show that the problems for minimizing the weighted sum of makespan and total resource cost remain polynomially solvable. We also prove that the problems for minimizing the weighted sum of total completion time and total resource cost have polynomial solutions under certain conditions.

Abstract:AbstractIn the paper two resource constrained single-machine group scheduling problems with both learning effects and deteriorating jobs are considered. By learning effects, deteriorating jobs and group technology assumption, we mean that the processing time of a job is defined by the function of its starting time and position in the group, and the group setup times of a group is a positive strictly decreasing continuous function of the amount of consumed resource. We present polynomial solutions for the makespan minimization problem under the constraint that the total resource consumption does not exceed a given limit, and the total resource consumption minimization problem under the constraint that the makespan does not exceed a given limit, respectively.
