Abstract:Formal concept analysis finds application across multiple domains, including knowledge representation, data mining, and decision analysis. Within this framework, the exploration of attribute reduction for fuzzy formal contexts represents a substantial area of research. We introduce a novel form of attribute reduction for fuzzy formal contexts named inner product reduction, and an algorithm for finding all inner product reducts is given by using the indiscernibility matrix, and a calculation example is given. Furthermore, for consistent fuzzy decision formal contexts, the definition and algorithm of inner product reduction are given. Finally, the concept and algorithm of inner product reduction are extended to general fuzzy decision formal contexts. Through experimental verification, the viability and efficacy of the inner product reduction algorithm for fuzzy formal contexts are verified.

Abstract:In this paper we propose a new dynamic reduct algorithm based on rough sets theory. When the number of the object in the information table increase, instead of treating the changed information table as a new one and finding the reduct again like rough set reduct algorithm does, the dynamic reduct algorithm just update the old reduct set based on the increased objects, so the computation time is greatly saved. Also the entropy criterion is introduced to the dynamic reduct algorithm, so the statistical causality between the attributes could be find and the reduct′s sensitivity to the noise unavoidably when the \$γ\$ criterion is applied could be removed. An illustrated example shows that by the dynamic reduct algorithm, computation time is greatly saved compared with the rough set theory based reduct algorithm, at the same time the same reduct is find with less objects, furthermore the results are sorted according to their causal strength.

Abstract:A new linguistic granular model is proposed and the effect of its parameters on the output is analyzed. The design of the model consists of two stages: using conditional fuzzy clustering for information granular, and integrating all information granules to final output. The integrating tool is fuzzy integral based on fuzzy measure, and the generalization of fuzzy integral increases flexibility of the linguistic granular model greatly. A heuristic algorithm to determine the parameters in the fuzzy integral is used to realize the linguistic model. Two experiments verify the feasibility of the proposed model.

Abstract:Ontology design for complex applications is quite a challenge. The quality of an ontology is highly dependent upon the capabilities of designers, and the collaborative design process is hampered by the difficulty of balancing the viewpoints of different designers. In this paper, we present a granular view of ontology: ontologies are granular, ontologies are granular approximations of conceptualizations and conceptual-relation granules of an ontology are ordered tuples. We then propose a corresponding granular ontology design approach. In our granular ontology design approach, the unified granular cognition level and hierarchies of sub-concepts are initialized before ontological terms are designed in detail, which reduces the subjective effects of the capabilities of designers. Our approach also introduces the idea of optimization to choose an optimal subset, which can best approximate the real concept domain, from the knowledge rule set presented by different domain experts. The optimal subset is chosen on the basis of the principle of granular ontology knowledge structure. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Attribute reduction plays an important role in the areas of rough sets and granular computing. Many kinds of attribute reducts have been defined in previous studies. However, most of them concentrate on data only, which result in the difficulties of choosing appropriate attribute reducts for specific applications. It would be ideal if we could combine properties of data and user preference in the definition of attribute reduct. In this paper, based on reviewing existing definitions of attribute reducts, we propose a generalized attribute reduct which not only considers the data but also user preference. The generalized attribute reduct is the minimal subset which satisfies a specific condition defined by users. The condition is represented by a group of measures and a group of thresholds, which are relevant to user requirements or real applications. For the same data, different users can define different reducts and obtain their interested results according to their applications. Most current attribute reducts can be derived from the generalized reduct. Several reduction approaches are also summarized to help users to design their appropriate reducts.

Abstract:This paper examines the knowledge representation theory of granulations. The key strengths of rough set theory are its capabilities in representing and processing knowledge in table format. For general granulation such capabilities are unknown. For single level granulation, two initial theories have been proposed previously by one of the authors. In this paper, the theories are re-visited, a new and deeper analysis is presented: Granular information table is an incomplete representation, so computing with words is the main method of knowledge processing. However for symmetrical granulation, the pre-topological information table is a complete representation, so the knowledge processing can be formal.

Abstract:In this paper, a new reduct searching algorithm is proposed to benefit the applications of rough sets theory. The information entropy is introduced to the reduct searching algorithm, so that indeterministic causalities among attributes can be found and the reduct sensitivity to noise, occurring unavoidably when the approximation quality function /spl gamma/ is applied, can be removed. The theoretical analysis and an illustrated example show that the rule set induced by this algorithm uses less attributes than that by algorithms based on the rough set /spl gamma/ function. At the same time, the new algorithm gives a larger rule set coverage, especially when the data are polluted by noise or the causalities among the attributes are indeterministic. In practice, noise pollution of data and indeterministic causalities are usual situations, so this algorithm is more applicable than those based on the rough sets /spl gamma/ function.

Abstract:Granular computing is an important research hotspot in artificial intelligence field. As one of the most important granular computing models, the quotient space theory mainly focuses on converting the fine granularity (original topological space) into the coarse granularity (quotient space). However, the granulation is an information decreasing and irreversible process which cannot be recovered losslessly from quotient space to original space. Therefore, this paper focuses on study the regranulation on topological structure of granular computing: Firstly, it defines concept of re-granulation which provides a mathematical method for reversibly transforming coarse granularity to fine one; Secondly, by theorems and examples it presents two reversible conditions of re-granulation --- defining a bijective mapping or keeping every open-set being saturated set on original space, which guarantee the information unchanging while restoring the problem from quotient space to original space. This paper has provided a formal computing framework for the reversibility of granularity on topological structure of granular computing.

Abstract:Attribute reduction is one basic issue in knowledge discovery of information systems. In this paper, based on the object oriented concept lattice and classical concept lattice, the approach of attribute reduction for formal contexts is investigated. We consider attribute reduction and attribute characteristics from the perspective of linear dependence of vectors. We first introduce the notion of context matrix and the operations of corresponding column vectors, then present some judgment theorems of attribute reduction for formal contexts. Furthermore, we propose a new method to reducing formal context and show corresponding reduction algorithms. Compared with previous reduction approaches which employ discernibility matrix and discernibility function to determine all reducts, the proposed approach is more simpler and easier to implement.

Abstract:A real-world dataset often generates a huge concept lattice that may be difficult to understand and impractical to use. The principle of granular computing is that we can understand and use a complex whole at multiple levels of granularity. In light of this, we propose a unified tri-granularity model of various types of concept lattices, which allows us to examine a huge concept lattice at three levels of granularity (i.e., the elementary granularity, local granularity and global granularity). Attribute reduction plays a fundamental role in three-way concept analysis, it simplifies the expression of three-way concepts and thus contributes to a better perception of the knowledge in three-way concept lattices. The tri-granularity model suggests an opportunity to investigate the tri-granularity attribute reduction of three-way concept lattices. The existing research on attribute reduction works at the global granularity but pays little attention to attribute reduction at the local granularity, or, even less, at the elementary granularity. Driven by these issues, we supply definitions and methods of local granularity and elementary granularity attribute reduction of three-way concept lattices. These newly proposed two levels of attribute reduction with the existing global granularity attribute reduction together provide a framework for the tri-granularity attribute reduction of three-way concept lattices. We further analyze the relationships among the three levels of attribute reduction. Moreover, the efficacy of our suggested approach is illustrated by an example via the trisections induced by three-way concepts. Finally, we design two tri-granularity attribute reduction algorithms whose effectiveness is further examined by numerical experiments.

Abstract:This paper proposes a way to develop a special type of fuzzy logic network-a granular logic network which generalizes the conventional fuzzy logic network by means of expanding the weights (and biases). Information granularity provides some flexibility on the determination of weights of a network. Five protocols are discussed here to realize the granular weights. The optimization of levels of granularities for different weights is done by an effective tool-particle swarm optimization. An illustrative simple example is given to show the study process of our approach.

Abstract:Rough set theory is a well-known mathematical framework that can deal with inconsistent data by providing lower and upper approximations of concepts. A prominent property of these approximations is their granular representation: that is, they can be written as unions of simple sets, called granules. The latter can be identified with "if..., then..." rules, which form the backbone of rough set rule induction. Alternatively, this property of granular representability can be defined as being free from inconsistencies, i.e. there are no elements within the set that are indiscernible to elements outside the set. It has been shown previously that this property can be maintained for various fuzzy rough set models, including those based on ordered weighted average (OWA) operators. In this paper, we will focus on some instances of the general class of fuzzy quantifier-based fuzzy rough sets (FQFRS). In these models, the lower and upper approximations are evaluated using binary and unary fuzzy quantifiers, respectively. One of the main targets of this study is to examine the granular representation of different models of FQFRS. The main findings reveal that Choquet-based fuzzy rough sets can be represented granularly under the same conditions as OWA-based fuzzy rough sets, whereas Sugeno-based FRS can always be represented granularly. Additionally, we provide counterexamples for the granular representability of other FQFRS models, and show that despite this, these approaches still demonstrate effectiveness in mitigating inconsistencies in real-life datasets. This observation highlights the potential of these models for resolving data inconsistencies and managing noise.

Abstract:Fuzzy rough set model is a powerful tool for handling attribute reduction tasks for complex data. While the fuzzy rough set model commonly employs fuzzy information entropy to measure attribute uncertainty, utilizing fuzzy conditional information entropy for measuring attribute relationships presents a drawback due to its lack of monotonicity, impacting attribute reduction results. Furthermore, entropy computations involve numerous logarithmic function computations, resulting in a significant computational burden. Moreover, the results obtained from logarithmic functions are unbounded. To address these problems, this paper presents the concept of Fuzzy Implication Granularity Information (FIGI) for measuring attribute information. Additionally, we introduce several related generalizations, such as fuzzy conditional implication granularity information, fuzzy mutual implication granularity information, and fuzzy joint implication granularity information, aiming to measure the relationships between attributes. Notably, the introduced fuzzy conditional implication granularity information to measure the relationship between attributes demonstrates the desirable property of monotonicity. Crucially, all the metrics proposed in this paper are bounded, ensuring that computed values within the range of 0 to 1. Finally, we propose a forward greedy attribute reduction algorithm based on the monotonic fuzzy conditional implication granularity information (MFIGI), and the performance of our MFIGI algorithm was compared against six different attribute reduction algorithms using three classifiers across 15 different datasets, the experimental results demonstrate the excellence of our MFIGI algorithm.

Abstract:Formal concept analysis, which is based on formal contexts and concept lattices, is a data analysis method. Formal concepts reflect the relationship between objects and attributes and realize a formal description of concepts in philosophy. To simplify the information description, this paper proposes concept reduction in the formal concept analysis framework and studies the related theories on concept reduction preserving binary relations. In addition, characteristics analysis of three types of concepts that play different roles in reduction processing is performed from the perspective of operators and a Boolean matrix. Finally, a method to calculate concept reduction is provided.

Abstract:Exploring rough sets from the perspective of multigranulation represents a promising direction in rough set theory, where concepts are approximated by multiple granular structures represented by binary relations. Through a combination of multigranulation rough sets with intuitionistic fuzzy rough sets, this study develops a new multigranulation rough set model, called an intuitionistic fuzzy multigranulation rough set (IFMGRS). In the multigranulation framework, three types of IFMGRSs that are generalizations of three existing intuitionistic fuzzy rough set models are proposed. First, we present three types of IFMGRSs. From their basic properties, we conclude that they are extensions of three existing intuitionistic fuzzy rough sets. Second, we define the reducts of the three types of IFMGRSs to eliminate redundant intuitionistic fuzzy granulations. Third, we examine the reduction approaches of IFMGRS with a detailed example and discuss the general reduction theory of IFMGRS.

Abstract:Based on the theory of concept lattice and fuzzy concept lattice, a mathematical model of a concept granular computing system is established, and relationships of the system and concept lattices. various variable threshold concept lattices and fuzzy concept lattices are then investigated. For this system, concept granules, sufficiency information granules and necessity information granules which are used to express different relations between a set of objects and a set of attributes are proposed. Approaches to construct sufficiency and necessity information granules are also shown. Sonic iterative algorithms to form concept granules are proposed. It is proved that the concept granules obtained by the iterative algorithms are the sub-concept granules or sup-concept granules under some conditions for this system. Finally, we give rough approximations based on fuzzy concept lattice in formal concept analysis.

Abstract:Three-way granular computing is a paradigm of thinking and information processing in three granules. We introduce a framework of three-way granular computing based on a hexagon induced by a trisection of a set. This enables us to unify rough-set concept analysis and formal concept analysis. For an object granule (i.e., a subset of a universal set of objects), we construct three attribute granules. Conversely, for an attribute granule (i.e., a subset of a universal set of attributes), we construct three object granules. Rough-set concept analysis uses one kind of trisections to study four types of disjunctive formal concepts and the associated concept lattices. Formal concept analysis uses another kind of trisections to study four types of conjunctive formal concepts and the associated concept lattices. The eight concept lattices can be grouped into two classes such that four lattices in each class are isomorphic.

Abstract:From the view point of granular computing, by analyzing the structure of fuzzy measures based on the quotient space analytical method, we have the following results: (1) the necessary and sufficient condition of the isomorphism of fuzzy measure functions in fuzzy mathematics; (2) the necessary and sufficient condition of the fuzzy and granular monotony of fuzzy measures. The results open out the essence of fuzzy measures and provide a simple way to constructing fuzzy measures. The results also show that the quotient space analytical method is ubiquitous and effective in many fields.

Abstract:In this paper, the quotient space model is extended to the fuzzy granular world and two main conclusions are given. First, the following four statements are equivalent: (1) a fuzzy equivalence relation given in universe X, (2) a normalized isosceles distance given in quotient space [X], (3) a hierarchical structure given in X, (4) a fuzzy knowledge base given in X. Second, the whole world with different fuzzy granularities composes a complete semi-order lattice. The results provide a powerful mathematical model and tool for granule computing.

Abstract:A family of overlapping granules can be formed by granulating a finite universe under a binary relation in a set-theoretic setting. In this paper, we granulate a universe by a binary relation and obtain a granular universe. And then we define two kinds of operators between these two universes, study properties of them. By combining these two kinds of operators, we get two pairs of approximation operators. It is proved that one kind of combination operators is just the approximation operators under a generalized approximation space defined according to Pawlak's rough set theory.
