Abstract:Quality function deployment (QFD) is an essential decision tool for product development in various domains. QFD enables the cross-functional team to translate the customer requirements into engineering characteristics during product development. Whilst there are some limitations for criteria evaluation and analysis in QFD, this study proposes a hybrid framework of Fuzzy Cognitive Network Process, Aggregative Grading Clustering, and Quality Function Deployment (F-CNP-AGC-QFD) for the criteria evaluation and analysis in QFD. The fuzzy number applied to the QFD, i.e. FQFD, enables rating flexibility for the expert judgment to handle uncertainty. The Fuzzy Cognitive Network Process (FCNP) is used for the criteria weights/priorities evaluation. The Fuzzy Aggregative Grading Clustering (FAGC) classifies the weights/priorities as ordinal grades. The proposed hybrid QFD approach applied to the cloud software product development is demonstrated to show the validity and applicability.

Abstract:ABSTRACTQuality function deployment (QFD) is a planning and problem‐solving tool gaining wide acceptance for translating customer needs (CNs) into technical attributes (TAs) of a product. It is a crucial step to derive the prioritization of TAs from CNs in QFD. However, it is not so straightforward to prioritize TAs due to two types of uncertainties: human subjective perception and user variability. The main focus of this article is to propose a group decision‐making approach to uncertain QFD with an application to a flexible manufacturing system design. The proposed approach performs computations solely based on the order‐based semantics of linguistic labels to eliminate the burden of quantifying qualitative concepts in QFD. Moreover, it incorporates the importance weights of users and the concept of fuzzy majority into aggregations of individual fuzzy preference relations of different TAs in order to model the group behaviors in QFD. Finally, based on a quantifier‐guided net flow score procedure, the proposed approach derives a priority ranking with a classification of TAs into important and unimportant ones so as to provide a better decision‐support to the decision‐maker. Due to the easiness in articulating preferential information, our approach can reduce the cognitive burden of QFD planning team and give a practical convenience in the process of QFD planning.

Abstract:In recent years, the increasing complexity of quality control in aircraft assembly has necessitated the development of innovative and integrated solutions. This paper introduces a novel framework based on cloud-edge-end architecture to enhance quality monitoring systems in aircraft assembly production. The framework consists of five parts: cloud, edge, end, network, and the trained model. By leveraging the advantages of cloud computing, edge computing, and terminal devices, this framework aims to provide a comprehensive, real-time, and efficient quality monitoring solution. Key technologies within the cloud-edge-end framework are proposed, including data collection, storage, and transmission, deep learning methods based on Channel Attention Convolutional Neural Network (CACNN), and feedback mechanisms from the cloud layer to the lower layers. These innovations enable effective information sharing and utilization at various stages of the aircraft assembly process, providing operational managers with timely and accurate insights into assembly quality. A prototype system application has been implemented at an aircraft assembly site, facilitating process data monitoring and assembly status analysis. Experimental validation of the proposed CACNN algorithm has demonstrated its capability to monitor hole diameters online. Various case studies confirm the framework's effectiveness, showcasing substantial improvements in monitoring accuracy and operational efficiency.

Abstract:Quality function deployment (QFD) is one of the very effective customer-driven quality system tools typically applied to fulfill customer needs or requirements (CRs). It is a crucial step in QFD to derive the prioritization of design requirements (DRs) from CRs for a product. However, effective prioritization of DRs is seriously challenged due to two types of uncertainties: human subjective perception and customer heterogeneity. This paper tries to propose a novel two-stage group decision-making approach to simultaneously address the two types of uncertainties underlying QFD. The first stage is to determine the fuzzy preference relations of different DRs with respect to each customer based on the order-based semantics of linguistic information. The second stage is to determine the prioritization of DRs by synthesizing all customers' fuzzy preference relations into an overall one by fuzzy majority. Two examples, a Chinese restaurant and a flexible manufacturing system, are used to illustrate the proposed approach. The restaurant example is also used to compare with three existing approaches. Implementation results show that the proposed approach can eliminate the burden of quantifying qualitative concepts and model customer heterogeneity and design team's preference. Due to its easiness, our approach can reduce the cognitive burden of QFD planning team and give a practical convenience in QFD planning. Extensions to the proposed approach are also given to address application contexts involving a wider set of HOQ elements. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Quality function deployment (QFD) is an effective method that helps companies analyze customer requirements (CRs). These CRs are then turned into product or service characteristics, which are translated to other attributes. With the QFD method, companies could design or improve the quality of products or services close to CRs. To increase the effectiveness of QFD, we propose an improved method based on Pythagorean fuzzy sets (PFSs). We apply an extended method to obtain the group consensus evaluation matrix. We then use a combined weight determining method to integrate former weights to objective weights derived from the evaluation matrix. To determine the exact score of each PFS in the evaluation matrix, we develop an improved score function. Lastly, we apply the proposed method to a case study on assembly robot design evaluation.

Abstract:As a customer-driven tool, quality function deployment (QFD) is widely used in product planning or improvement to achieve higher product performance and customer satisfaction. QED uses a matrix called the house of quality (HoQ) to translate customer requirements (CRs) into engineering characteristics (ECs). Constructing the HoQ, which includes determining the importance weights of CRs, the correlation matrix among ECs and the relationship matrix between CRs and ECs, is an important issue in the application of QFD. However, decision-makers (DMs) participating the construction of HoQ tend to give their individual judgments in multi-format or multi-granularity depending on their different knowledge, experience, culture and circumstance. Furthermore, these judgments are more difficult to assess with the precise quantitative forms due to the vagueness and uncertainty existed in the early stage of new product development. In this paper, a group decision-making approach incorporating with two optimization models (i.e. logarithmic least squares model and weighted least squares model) is proposed to aggregate these multi-format and multi-granularity linguistic judgments. Fuzzy set theory is utilized to address the uncertainty in the decision-making process. The proposed method is illustrated with a real-world case of horizontal directional drilling machine. Abstract:With developments in cloud computing and big data, the term “cloud” has become a household name owing to its characteristics of smartness and connectedness. Cloud-based platforms are associated with people. However, multi-objective decision-making problem in cloud platforms has not been extensively studied. There is no consensus on the reasonable and effective implementation of the decision-making model to select the optimum design scheme in a cloud platform and its establishment to objectively evaluate its significance. In this study, to efficiently and accurately realize the optimal selection of design scheme, a fuzzy evaluation mechanism in handling the vagueness and uncertainty is established, with the advantage of quality function deployment and strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm in decision analysis. A case study is provided to validate the proposed approach in cloud platforms. To reveal the advantages of the proposed method, it was compared with other methods such as the requirement-scenario-experience evaluation framework and a rough number-based integrated method. MATLAB programming was used for this comparison and accuracy certification. The result shows that the proposed model is more efficient and dynamic and provided users with multidimensional evaluation based on open and distributed resources system.

Abstract:Quality function deployment (QFD) is a useful quality management tool for the transformation of customer requirements (CRs) into engineering characteristics (ECs) in product development. In the literature, a lot of QFD approaches have been proposed to overcome the deficiencies and enhance the performance of the traditional QFD method. However, there are several issues deserving further investigation for improving QFD: majority of the existing methods describe experts’ opinions with single linguistic terms directly, which may produce the loss of information; most of the improved QFD methods cannot take the consensus levels among experts into account. In this study, we develop a new integrated QFD approach based on the interval 2-tuple Pythagorean fuzzy linguistic sets (I2PFLSs), the social network consensus reaching (SNCR) model, and an extended combined compromise solution (CoCoSo) method. There are three main contributions of the presented study: First, the correlation assessments between CRs and ECs given by experts are handled with the I2PFLSs. Second, the SNCR with minimum adjustment distance is employed to coordinate experts’ conflict correlation assessments by considering their trust relationships. Third, an extended CoCoSo method is employed to determine the importance ranking of ECs within the interval 2-tuple Pythagorean fuzzy linguistic environment. Finally, we present an electric vehicle product development case to demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed QFD approach. The results show that the new QFD can express experts’ fuzzy and uncertain linguistic assessment information flexibly, deal with experts’ consensus in correlation assessment process, and yield more precise importance ranking of ECs for product improvement.

Abstract:As a powerful instrument to fulfil customer needs, quality function deployment (QFD) is capable of converting customer requirements (CRs) into appropriate engineering characteristics (ECs) in the product design and development. Nevertheless, the inherent defects of the conventional QFD, such as the description of experts’ opinions with crisp numbers and the non-robust ranking of ECs, confine its efficiency and potential applications. In this study, a novel QFD approach using proportional hesitant fuzzy linguistic term sets (PHFLTSs) and prospect theory is proposed to overcome the insufficiencies of the traditional QFD. Specifically, the relationships between CRs and ECs are represented by PHFLTSs and the weights of CRs are derived with the best-worst method (BWM). An extended prospect theory is employed for the prioritisation of the ECs that have been identified. Finally, two application examples are provided to examine the applicability and advantages of our proposed QFD approach.

Abstract:During the conceptual stage of a building design, major design decisions that have the greatest influence on buildability of a project are taken. Quality function deployment (QFD) is an integrated decision-making methodology that can assure and improve the alignment of elements of design and construction processes with the requirements of customers. On the basis of the enlarged customer concept, QFD has the potential to be developed as a quantitative approach for buildability evaluation. This paper presents the findings of a research effort to adapt House of Quality (HOQ) to meet the needs of buildable designs in the construction industry and to develop a fuzzy QFD system for buildability evaluation. In this system, the fuzzy set theory is integrated into HOQ to capture the inherent impreciseness and vagueness of design-relevant inputs and facilitate the analysis of design-relevant QFD information. An example is presented to illustrate the system, which provides a viable decision-making method for quantitative buildability evaluation at the early design phase.

Abstract:Quality function deployment (QFD) is a well-known customer-driven approach for new or improved product/service design and development to maximize customer satisfaction. A typical QFD analysis process involves a series of group decision-making (GDM) processes, such as determination of the importance of customer requirements (CRs), the relationship between CRs and engineering characteristics (ECs), and the correlation among ECs. Properly handling these GDM processes is essential because it will significantly affect the prioritization of ECs, the target value setting of ECs, and the following deployment phases of QFD. Due to different personal experiences and/or lack of sufficient knowledge and information, decision-makers who participate in the QFD analysis process tend to provide their opinions by using different types and multi-granularity linguistic information, which are inherently vague and imprecise. Unlike most of the previous studies, which excessively rely on fuzzy approaches, this study proposes an integrated linguistic-based GDM approach, which can compute with words directly and avoid the risk of loss of information, to cope with multiple types and multi-granularity linguistic assessments given by a group of decision-makers in QFD activity process. Finally, a numerical example is taken to illustrate the applicability of the proposed approach. The linguistic-based approach can effectively manage the imprecise and vague input information in QFD and facilitate decision-making in product design and development.

Abstract:A type of quality function development (QFD) is an important methodology for concurrent engineering. QFD contacts the customer requirements and production process. In distributed environment, customer requirements, multiple team members and process are geographically, culturally, and functionally diverse. It requires cooperation and conflict resolution among design, production and sales process. In this paper, we introduce a blackboard-based multi-agent distributed QFD framework. In this framework, QFD core module, manufacture module, distributed TM module and market module are presented. Agents are used to emulate the entities i.e. various module and their internal departments. The framework facilitates the development of the product design and the production process.

Nonetheless, the traditional QFD has been extensively criticized as having many defects in practical applications, which include the crisp evaluation of relationships between customer requirements and engineering characteristics, and the non-robust ranking of engineering characteristics. In this paper, we put forward a new method using double hierarchy hesitant linguistic term sets (DHHLTSs) and axiomatic design approach to enhance the performance of the classical QFD. Firs, the DHHLTSs are employed to evaluate the relationships between customer requirements and engineering characteristics. Then, the axiomatic design theory is extended to derive the prioritization of engineering characteristics in QFD. Additionally, a maximizing consensus method is used to determine the weights of experts considering inconsistency among their opinions. Finally, an empirical case of a shared car manufacturer is provided with a comparison analysis to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of our proposed QFD approach.

Abstract:To effectively and flexibly manage imprecise information in Quality Function Deployment(QFD)and to tackle multi-object optimization problem,information provided by each QFD product developer were regarded as information source of the evidence reasoning theory,and then related reasoning algorithm was extended to fuse group information source so as to obtain a collaborative decision consensus result.The multiple constraints and multiple objective optimization models were constructed.Aims of models were to obtain maximum customer satisfaction degree,minimum cost difficulty for quality characteristics implementation level.The improved Non-dominated Sorting Genetics Algorithm(NSGA-Ⅱ)was employed to acquire the Pareto solutions set of implementation levels of quality characteristics.And fuzzy optimal selection technique was adopted to select the best solution from the Pareto solutions set.Finally,development of large-scale deep cooling air-separating equipment in a company as the case was given to demonstrate the application and validation of the proposed method.

Abstract:Quality function deployment (QFD) is an efficient planning and problem-solving method to convert customer requirements (CRs) into the engineering characteristics (ECs) of a product or service. Nevertheless, in the traditional QFD, the assessment of relationships between CRs and ECs and the prioritization of ECs have been criticized for various reasons in previous studies. This paper aims to propose a novel QFD method integrating extended hesitant fuzzy linguistic term sets (EHFLTSs) and prospect theory to overcome the limitations of the traditional QFD. First, EHFLTSs are used for the elicitation of hesitant linguistic assessment information of QFD team members. Considering the interrelations between CRs, Choquet integral is applied to obtain the aggregated relationship evaluation results. An extended prospect theory is suggested to derive the ranking orders of ECs. Finally, the efficiency and effectiveness of the presented QFD method are illustrated by an example of an electric vehicle manufacturing company.

Abstract:As a customer-driven tool to support the development of new products or services, quality function deployment (QFD) is able to transform customer requirements (CRs) into suitable engineering characteristics (ECs) to maximise the customer satisfaction. However, the conventional QFD method has some weaknesses limiting its effectiveness in the real applications. In this study, a new QFD approach based on linguistic Pythagorean fuzzy sets (LPFSs) and alternative queuing method (AQM) is constructed to enhance the performance of the traditional QFD. First, we express the assessments from experts on the relationships between CRs and ECs using the LPFSs. Second, we apply an extended AQM to determine the importance prioritisation of ECs. Additionally, a consensus reaching algorithm is adopted to dynamically determine the relative weights of experts considering their inconsistent judgements. An illustrative application of 5G smartphone development is conducted to demonstrate the feasibility and efciency of our proposed QFD approach. Through the empirical case with a comparative analysis, the proposed approach is proved to be useful and practical for capturing experts' opinions and prioritising ECs in QFD. Abstract:Conventional Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is technically one-sided. Prioritization of technical attributes, if carried out at all, attempts to maximize customer satisfaction without considering the costs incurred. However, product design is usually a techno-economic process, hence there is always a tradeoff between quality goals and limited budgets. Based on a prioritization method suggested by Wasserman [1], this paper integrates design costs into the QFD framework. This proposed approach enables designers to optimize product development resources towards customer satisfaction and conduct analytical investigations to facilitate decision making in product design and development.

Abstract:Complex structure and high technical barriers make it difficult for manufacturers to design new products independently, hence supply chain collaborative design prevails. Supply chain collaborative design has been discussed in the literature and multiple effective methods have been proposed. Nevertheless, the systematic framework for collaboration has been scarcely addressed, and multi-objective decision-making with uncertain information and poor data is still a research difficulty. This paper proposes a novel collaborative quality design framework for large complex products supply chain by integrating the fuzzy QFD (quality function deployment) and the grey decision-making approach. The proposed method exerts QFD design deployment function to decompose design tasks to all participants in the supply chain systematically, from overall design to detailed design. The joint design team composed of supply chain participants, can effectively ensure that all design phases are aligned with the general design objective. In addition to market competitiveness and quality, multi-objective assessments are developed in the fuzzy QFD to make the design method more practical. Moreover, a weighted multi-attribute grey target decision-making method assists decision-makers to identify the optimal quality scheme with uncertain information and poor data. The proposed framework is applied to a new launch vehicle design in China to illustrate its effectiveness. Implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.
