Abstract:Switchable catalysis, in combination with epoxide-involved ring-opening (co)polymerization, is a powerful technique that can be used to synthesize various oxygen-rich block copolymers. Despite intense research in this field, the sequence-controlled polymerization from epoxide congeners has never been realized due to their similar ring-strain which exerts a decisive influence on the reaction process. Recently, quaternary ammonium (or phosphonium)-containing bifunctional organoboron catalysts have been developed by our group, showing high efficiency for various epoxide conversions. Herein, we, for the first time, report an operationally simple pathway to access well-defined polyether-block-polycarbonate copolymers from mixtures of epoxides by switchable catalysis, which was enabled through thermodynamically and kinetically preferential ring-opening of terminal epoxides or internal epoxides under different atmospheres (CO2 or N2) using one representative bifunctional organoboron catalyst. This strategy shows a broad substrate scope as it is suitable for various combinations of terminal epoxides and internal epoxides, delivering corresponding well-defined block copolymers. NMR, MALDI-TOF, and gel permeation chromatography analyses confirmed the successful construction of polyether-block-polycarbonate copolymers. Kinetic studies and density functional theory calculations elucidate the reversible selectivity between different epoxides in the presence/absence of CO2. Moreover, by replacing comonomer CO2 with cyclic anhydride, the well-defined polyether-block-polyester copolymers can also be synthesized. This work provides a rare example of sequence-controlled polymerization from epoxide mixtures, broadening the arsenal of switchable catalysis that can produce oxygen-rich polymers in a controlled manner.

Abstract:The product from free radical and coordination polymerization generally are homopolymer or random copolymer with broad molecular weight distribution.In the past two decades,the breakthroughs in controlled/living radical and coordination polymerization and shuttling polymerization make it possible to use almost all vinyl monomers,particularly those cheap monomers,to produce more complex chain structures like di-,tri-block copolymer and gradient copolymers.With rational design,these copolymers might be high performance and high added value synthetic materials.The mechanisms and the up-to-date progress of these polymerization methods were introduced,and their possible applications were discussed.

Abstract:A new strategy combing quantitative reactions and reversible-covalent chemistry is proposed for sequential synthesis of a series of sequence-controlled polymers with different sequences. Using a Michael addition reaction between acrylate and thiol, an aminolysis reaction of five-membered cyclic dithiocarbonate and a thiol substitution reaction of bromomaleimide and thiol, AB-, AB'C- and AB'CD-sequenced molecules are synthesized via AB, AB'C and AB'CD sequential monomer additions, respectively. These three molecules all have furan-protected maleimido group at one end, and the other end of AB-, AB'C- and AB'CD-sequenced molecules is amine, thiol and anthracene groups, respectively. Due to the fact that the furan-protected maleimido group can be efficiently transformed to maleimide group at high temperature via retro Diels-Alder reaction, AB-, AB'C- and AB'CD-sequenced molecules polymerize into sequence-controlled polymers with corresponding sequences at 120 degrees C. Through this strategy, the synthesis of molecular modules does not require separation and purification, and sequence-controlled polymers with specific sequence can be synthesized in a one-pot process via adding different monomers and adjusting reaction condition.

Abstract:<p>Sequence control has attracted increasing attention for its ability of regulating polymer property and performance. Herein, the sequence‐controlled polymer containing acrylonitrile (AN) is achieved by using 2,5‐dimethylfuran/acrylonitrile adduct as a latent monomer. The temperature‐dependent retro Diels–Alder reaction is engaged in controlling the release of AN during RAFT polymerization, that is, regulating the instant AN concentration via a non‐invasive and in situ manner. Such control over the instant AN concentration and particularly the molar ratio of comonomer pair leads to the simultaneous change of monomer units in "living" polymeric chain, thus resulting in the sequence–controlled polymeric structures. By delicately manipulating the polymerization temperature, diverse sequence‐on‐demand structures of AN‐containing copolymers, such as poly(AN/methyl methacrylate), poly(AN/styrene), poly(AN/butyl acrylate), poly(AN/N,N‐dimethylacrylamide), and poly(AN/N‐isopropylacrylamide) are created. Meanwhile, this study presents an initial attempt in tuning the thermal responsivity of poly(AN/N‐isopropylacrylamide), which is closely correlated to the sequence of polymer structure. More importantly, the polymer with averagely distributed AN units results in the higher thermal sensitivity. Therefore, the synthetic strategy proposed in this work offers a promising platform for accessing the sequence‐controlled copolymers containing AN structures, thus expanding the investigation on the relationship between the polymer structures and correlated properties.</p>

Abstract:The precise sequence control of polymer chain is an important research topic of polymer chemistry. Although some methods such as iterative synthesis and supramolecular polymerization have been developed to fabricate sequence-controllable polymer, it is still a great challenge to consecutively prepare multiple supramolecular polymers with different sequence structures. In this work, through the reasonable utilization of assembly motifs, we integrated multiple host-guest recognitions and metal coordination interactions to prepare different sequence-controlled supramolecular polymers by a multistep assembly strategy. This research provides inspiration for the design and preparation of supramolecular polymers with different sequence structures.

Abstract:The chain sequence of a poly(styrene-co-methyl acrylate) copolymer is designed to form a V-shaped gradient sequence via controlled/living radical emulsion copolymerization. This specially designed chain sequence gives this common copolymer the capacity of multishape memory. Abstract:Sequence-controlled polymers are prepared by the combination of thiol-ene click reaction and amino-yne click reaction. Due to the high selectivity of the amine unit and thiol unit toward thiolactone, methacrylate, propiolate, etc., the sequence of the resulting polymers can be easily controlled by monomer-addition sequence. Moreover, thiol-ene click reaction and amino-yne click reaction can be carried out under mild conditions without need of any catalyst. Different kinds of sequence-controlled copolymers have been prepared by the combination of thiol-ene click reaction and amino-yne click reaction in one pot. NMR spectra and GPC traces confirmed the formation of polymers with high molecular weight and controlled sequence structure. Therefore, we provide a new method for the preparation of functional polymers with well-controlled sequences.

Abstract:Post-polymerization modification is a facile and efficient method for the generation of diverse functional polymers. Herein, polymer-based molecular arrays were obtained by using sequential modification. First, periodic polyketone P0 was synthesized via acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of α,ω-diene M0. Oxime chemistry was employed in the functionalization of the ketone moieties of P0 using three commercially available alkoxyamine hydrochlorides. Finally, electrophilic alkoxyetherification, a four-component reaction, was employed in the modification of alkene groups on polymer main chains using N-bromosuccinimide (NBS), tetrahydrofuran, and fluorinated carboxylic acid. Complete conversion of reactive sites was observed in both steps, and the two modification reactions exhibited excellent compatibility. The thermal properties of the polymers as thermal stability, and glass transition and melting behaviours were investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

Abstract:Exploring new polymerization strategy for current available monomers is a big challenge in polymer science.Here we re-investigate radical polymerization of monovinyl monomer(MVM)initiated by uniform branched polyfunctional initiator(PFI),which is termed non-linear radical additions-coupling polymerization(NLRAsCP).In NLRAsCP,both addition and coupling reactions of radical contribute to the construction of the polymer chains,which leads to continuous growth of branch topology.Theoretical analysis of NLRAsCP predicts that the gelation is determined by the functionality of PFI(a),the extent of initiation of the PFI(q)and the termination factor of radical(φ).NLRAsCPs of styrene and methyl methacrylate promoted by Cu(0)/Me6TREN or Mn2(CO)10/visible light were conducted.After the cleavage of incorporated PFI fragment or junctions in the network,the network was transformed to linear chains having almost the same structure as segmental chains in the precursor network.This allows the reverse deducing the network structure from its cleaved products.It has been proven that NLRAsCP includes stepwise initiation of PFI,chain-growth of segmental chains and successive endlinking of macroradicals derived from PFI.The three parameters related to the gelation process,a,q and φ,were adjusted via binary PFI,the feed ratio of[Mn2(CO)10]/[PFI]and addition of non-homopolymerizable comonomer respectively.The minimum values of a and q,and the minimum amount of comonomer required for gelation were determined,which can be applied to estimate φ of various macroradicals.NLRAsCP opens a general and facile strategy for synthesis of a variety of polymer networks with heritable architecture by one-pot polymerization of various MVMs.

Abstract:The synthesis of polymers with on-demand sequence structures is very important not only for academic researchers but also for industry. However, despite the existing polymerization techniques, it is still difficult to achieve copolymer chains with on-demand sequence structures. Here we report a dually switchable and controlled interconvertible polymerization system; in this system, two distinct orthogonal polymerizations can be selectively switched ON/OFF independent of each other and they can be interconverted promptly and quantitatively according to external stimuli. Thus, the external stimuli can manipulate the insertion of distinct monomers into the resulting copolymer chains temporally, spatially, and orthogonally, allowing the on-demand precise arrangement of sequence structures in the resulting polymers. This dually switchable and interconvertible polymerization system provides a powerful tool for synthesizing materials that are not accessible by other polymerization methods.

Abstract:Sequence-controlled polymers, including biopolymers such as DNA, RNA, and proteins, have attracted much attention recently because of their sequence-dependent functionalities. The development of an efficient synthetic approach for non-natural sequence-controlled polymers is hence of great importance. Multicomponent polymerizations (MCPs) as a powerful and popular synthetic approach for functional polymers with great structural diversity have been demonstrated to be a promising tool for the synthesis of sequence-controlled polymers. In this work, we developed a facile metal-free one-pot multicomponent tandem polymerization (MCTP) of activated internal alkynes, aromatic diamines, and formaldehyde to successfully synthesize structural-regulated and sequence-controlled polyheterocycles with high molecular weights (up to 69 800 g/mol) in high yields (up to 99%). Through such MCTP, polymers with the in situ generated multisubstituted tetrahydropyrimidines or dihydropyrrolones in the backbone and inherent luminescence can be easily obtained with high atom economy and environmental benefit, which is inaccessible by other synthetic approaches.
The Synthesis of Sequence-controlled Multiblock Copolymers by Frustrated Lewis Pair: Can the Pandora's Box be Reopened?

Abstract:Sequence-controlled polymers have been regarded as a great challenging holy grail to be ultimately achieved in polymer science. However, its synthesis is just like a Pandora's box that is impossible to be reopened due to the lack of efficient synthetic methodologies. More recently, Yuetao Zhang's group at Jilin University has made a big breakthrough in the synthesis of sequence-controlled polymers by using living/controlled frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) polymerization system. FLP composed of organophosphorus superbase and organoaluminum Lewis acid can rapidly incoporate four methacrylic monomers into a tripentacontablock copolymers, which is by far the world's highest record for block numbers (about 2.5 times of the previous record) and the degree of polymerization is 50 per block. This synthetic strategy has several remarkable features such as room-temperature synthesis and easily scale-up to high multigram experiment over 110 grams; simple procedure: no additional initiator or catalyst but only sequential addition of monomer is required for per block copolymerization. It only took 30 min to synthesize such a tripentacontablock copolymers. All these features indicated the very promising prospects of this FLP polymerization system in industry, inspiring the polymer chemists' enthusiasm to reopen the pandora's box.

Abstract:Trimethylaluminum adds to cyclotrimeric zirconocene oxide [Cp2ZrO]3 to give the cyclodimeric mixed metal complex [Cp2Zr(CH3)OAl(CH3)2]2 (3a-dimer) featuring a central Al2O2 containing four-membered ring system. Complex 3a-dimer crystallizes in space group P21/c with cell parameters a = 8.3974(8), b = 8.6509(7), c = 19.718(1) Å, β = 97.36(1)°, Ζ = 2, R = 0.029, Rw = 0.038. With methylalumoxane 3a-dimer gives an active catalyst (Zr: Al ≈1:8) for ethylene polymerization.

Abstract:Sequence‐regulated polymerization is realized upon sequential cross‐metathesis polymerization (CMP) and exhaustive hydrogenation to afford precision aliphatic polyesters with alternating sequences. This strategy is particularly suitable for the arrangement of well‐known monomer units including glycolic acid, lactic acid, and caprolactic acid on polymer chain in a predetermined sequence. First of all, structurally asymmetric monomers bearing acrylate and α‐olefin terminuses are generated in an efficient and straightforward fashion. Subsequently, cross‐metathesis (co)polymerization of M1 and M2 using the Hoveyda–Grubbs second‐generation catalyst (HG‐II) furnishes P1–P3, respectively. Finally, hydrogenation yields the desired saturated polyesters HP1–HP3. It is noteworthy that the ε‐caprolactone‐derived unit is generated in situ rather than introduced to tailor‐made monomers prior to CMP. NMR and matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF‐MS) results verify the microstructural periodicity of these precision polyesters. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results reflect that polyesters without methyl side groups exhibit crystallinity, and unsaturated polyester samples show higher glass transition temperatures than their hydrogenated counterparts owing to structural rigidity. image

Abstract:Polymerization of multifunctional monomers could produce polymers with different functionalities and novel macromolecular architectures. However, the ability to control the homopolymerization of multivinyl monomers (MVMs) has always been a challenge. Here we demonstrate that the homopolymerization of acrylate based MVMs can be kinetically controlled via Cu-0-mediated controlled/living radical polymerization in the presence of additional Cu-II, which enables the efficient promotion of intrarnolecular cydization and suppression of intermolecular cross-linking. The gelation is effectively delayed over ca. 40% monomer conversion in the concentrated polymerization system ([M] = 40.9 wt %), which is far higher than the Flory-Stockmayer theory predicts. Moreover, closer inspection of the synthesized polymers reveals that single-chain cyclized/knotted polymeric nanoparticles (SCKNPs) are formed due to the nature of one-pot in situ intramolecular reaction and self-cyclization of the propagating polymer chains. This facile, method opens a new avenue to the design and synthesis of a broad range of novel single-chain cyclized/knotted polymeric materials.

Abstract:The selective monoaddition of polymerizable vinyl monomers like styrenes and methacrylates in a living manner has been achieved for the flash-flow preparation of molecules in a defined sequence with high selectivity. We demonstrated the sequence-defined synthesis of multifunctional molecules using an initiator, functionalized styrenes, diarylethylenes, various methacrylates, and an electrophilic trapping reagent at the living terminus (six-component sequential connection at maximum) without any intermediate purification steps. The anionic living terminus of the vinyl monomers in the flow system described herein is active for polymerization, such that the styrene or methacrylate sequence can be expanded to afford highly dispersed oligomers without affecting other single units, which means that the unequivocal sequences were successfully inserted into the internal or terminal positions. The methodology described herein provides an adaptable method for the construction of new molecular spaces based on unimolecular sequence control and pinpoint functionalization.

Abstract:To emulate the ordered arrangement of monomer units found in natural macromolecules, single-unit monomer insertion (SUMI) have emerged as a potent technique for synthesizing sequence-controlled vinyl polymers. Specifically, numerous applications necessitate vinyl polymers encompassing both radically and cationically polymerizable monomers, posing a formidable challenge due to the distinct thiocarbonylthio end-groups required for efficient control over radical and cationic SUMIs. Herein, we present a breakthrough in the form of interconvertible radical and cationic SUMIs achieved through the manipulation of thiocarbonylthio end-groups. The transition from a trithiocarbonate (for radical SUMI) to a dithiocarbamate (for cationic SUMI) is successfully accomplished via a radical-promoted reaction with bis(thiocarbonyl) disulfide. Conversely, the reverse transformation utilizes the reaction between dithiocarbamate and bistrithiocarbonate disulfide under a cationic mechanism. Employing this strategy, we demonstrate a series of synthetic examples featuring discrete oligomers containing acrylate, maleimide, vinyl ether, and styrene, compositions unattainable through the SUMI of a single mechanism alone.

Sequence‐Controlled Copolymerization of Structurally Well‐Defined Multinuclear Zinc Acrylate Complexes and Styrene

Abstract:Sequence‐controlled copolymerization of acrylate and styrene is achieved using readily accessible multinuclear zinc acrylate complexes as comonomers. A multinuclear zinc complex with densely arranged acrylate moieties affords a copolymer with more acrylate contiguous structures compared to the statistically random sequence, whereas a spherical zinc acrylate complex with separated acrylates affords a copolymer with many separate acrylate moieties. The copolymerization of two or more monomers produces polymeric materials with unique properties that cannot be achieved with homopolymers. However, precise control over the polymer sequence remains challenging because the sequence is determined by the inherent reactivity of comonomers. Therefore, only limited methods using modified monomers or supramolecular interactions are reported. In this study, the sequence control of acrylate‐styrene copolymerization using multinuclear zinc complexes is reported. The copolymerization of the zinc acrylate complex with a polymeric sheet‐like structure and styrene in benzene affords a copolymer with a higher content of acrylate triad than calculated for the statistical random model, whereas tetranuclear zinc acrylate (TZA) affords a copolymer with fewer adjacent acrylate sequences. The copolymer with a higher content of acrylate triad exhibits a lower glass transition temperature because of the higher mobility of the longer polystyrene segments. These results highlight the promise of multinuclear zinc acrylate complexes as monomers for sequence‐controlled copolymerization.
