Abstract:Quasi-two-dimensional (2D) metal molecular networks (MMNs) often exhibit a nanoconfinement effect and high degree of anisotropy, which are highly diverse in their mechanical, electronic, and magnetic functionalities. Here we report an interfacial self-assembly of mechanically robust 2D MMNs, in which 3d transition metals are interconnected via molecular thiol bridges. The Langmuir-Schafer assembled freestanding 2D nanosheets exhibit highly desired anisotropic charge transport and spin susceptibility, in which light and magnetic field induced charge transfer regulates the electronic interactions. Meanwhile, the mechanistic studies involving electronic structure reveal the molecular metal packing structure-controlled nanoconfinement and charge transfer. This study opens the door to 2D ultrathin metal coordination nanostructures for emerging functional materials and devices.

Abstract:Two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures are of considerable interest for the next generation nanoelectronics because of their unique interlayer coupling and optoelectronic properties. Here, we report a modified Langmuir-Blodgett method to organize two-dimensional molecular charge transfer crystals into arbitrarily and vertically stacked heterostructures, consisting of bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF)/C60 and poly(3-dodecylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3DDT)/C60 nanosheets. A strong and anisotropic interfacial coupling between the charge transfer pairs is demonstrated. The van der Waals heterostructures exhibit pressure dependent sensitivity with a high piezoresistance coefficient of -4.4 × 10-6 Pa-1, and conductance and capacitance tunable by external stimuli (ferroelectric field and magnetic field). Density functional theory calculations confirm charge transfer between the n-orbitals of the S atoms in BEDT-TTF of the BEDT-TTF/C60 layer and the π* orbitals of C atoms in C60 of the P3DDT/C60 layer contribute to the inter-complex CT. The two-dimensional molecular van der Waals heterostructures with tunable optical-electronic-magnetic coupling properties are promising for flexible electronic applications.Two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures are of interest due to their unique interlayer coupling and optoelectronic properties. Electrical Control of Magnetic Proximity Effect in a Graphene/multiferroic Heterostructure

Abstract:The proximity effect, which offers a proper route to extend the properties of 2D materials, is of great current interest. In hybrid systems formed by graphene and multiferroic materials, effective manipulation of the proximity effect is expected through magneto-electric coupling. In this work, we report the electrical control of the magnetic proximity effect in graphene/BiFeO3 heterostructures. The obvious ferroelectric gating effect on graphene is achieved using BiFeO3 as a top gate. The interfacial magnetic exchange field has a notable dependence on the top gate voltage, giving rise to an electrical modulation on Zeeman splitting and energy gap inside N = 0 Landau level of graphene. Our findings suggest graphene/BiFeO3 heterostructures provide a broad avenue for realization of future multiferroic electronics and spintronics.

Abstract:Graphene, a very intriguing two-dimensional Dirac electronic system with high carrier mobility, is promising for spintronics. However, the long-range ferromagnetic order is always absent in pristine graphene. Here we report the fabrication and transport properties of graphene-BiFeO3 heterostructures. It is found that the magnetic proximity effect results in a strong Zeeman splitting in graphene with the exchange field up to hundreds of tesla. The nu = 0 quantum Hall state of graphene is further transformed into a ferromagnetic state or a canted antiferromagnetic state in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. Our findings in graphene/BiFeO3 heterostructure are therefore promising for future spintronics.

Abstract:Topologically protected magnetic states have a variety of potential applications in future spintronics owing to their nanoscale size (<100 nm) and unique dynamics. These fascinating states, however, usually are located at the interfaces or surfaces of ultrathin systems due to the short interaction range of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Here, magnetic topological states in a 40-unit cells (16 nm) SrRuO3 layer are successfully created via an interlayer exchange coupling mechanism and the interfacial DMI. By controlling the thickness of an antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic layer, interfacial ionic polarization, as well as the transformation between ferromagnetic and magnetic topological states, can be modulated. Using micromagnetic simulations, the formation and stability of robust magnetic skyrmions in SrRuO3 /BiFeO3 heterostructures are elucidated. Magnetic skyrmions in thick multiferroic heterostructures are promising for the development of topological electronics as well as rendering a practical approach to extend the interfacial topological phenomena to bulk via antiferromagnetic order.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) lateral heterostructures host unconventional physical properties due to their controllable band-offset tuning and interfacial sensitive characteristic. The lattice mismatch results in the difficulties to construct the perfect atomic interface in such 2D lateral heterostructures, which in turn limits their desirable properties and performances in applications. In this work, strain-modulated 2D lateral pseudoheterogeneous structures are designed and realized in the single-component 2D BiOBr nanosheets by taking advantage of their strain-sensitive crystal and electronic structures. The pseudoheterogeneous interface without atomic mismatch can be feasibly modulated by local strain distribution, which exhibits similar local electronic band structure of corresponding heterostructures. Significant enhancement in charge separation at the pseudoheterostructure was demonstrated under visible light irradiation, which is given rise to the controllable electronic band alignment across the interface. The construction of the lateral pseudoheterostructure offers a feasible and promising way to build unprecedented 2D systems with exciting properties.

Abstract:Superconductivity is mutually exclusive with ferromagnetism, because the ferromagnetic exchange field is often destructive to superconducting pairing correlation. Well-designed chemical and physical methods have been devoted to realize their coexistence only by structural integrity of inherent superconducting and ferromagnetic ingredients. However, such coexistence in freestanding structure with nonsuperconducting and nonferromagnetic components still remains a great challenge up to now. Here, we demonstrate a molecule-confined engineering in two-dimensional organic-inorganic superlattice using a chemical building-block approach, successfully realizing first freestanding coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism originated from electronic interactions of nonsuperconducting and nonferromagnetic building blocks. We unravel totally different electronic behavior of molecules depending on spatial confinement: flatly lying Co(Cp)2 molecules in strongly confined SnSe2 interlayers weaken the coordination field, leading to spin transition to form ferromagnetism; meanwhile, electron transfer from cyclopentadienyls to the Se-Sn-Se lattice induces superconducting state. This entirely new class of coexisting superconductivity and ferromagnetism generates a unique correlated state of Kondo effect between the molecular ferromagnetic layers and inorganic superconducting layers. We anticipate that confined molecular chemistry provides a newly powerful tool to trigger exotic chemical and physical properties in two-dimensional matrixes.
Quantum anomalous Hall effect in metal-bis(dithiolene), magnetic properties, doping and interfacing graphene

Abstract:The realization of the Quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in two dimensional (2D) metal organic frameworks (MOFs), (MC$_4$S$_4$)$_3$ with M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ru and Rh, has been investigated based on a combination of first-principles calculations and tight binding models. Our results for the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) reveal that the out-of-plane (in-plane) magnetization is favored for M = Mn, Fe, and Ru (Co, and Rh). Given the structural symmetry of (MC$_4$S$_4$)$_3$, the QAHE takes place only for M = Mn, Fe and Ru. Such a quantum anomalous Hall phase has been confirmed through the calculation of the Chern number, and examining the formation of topologically protected (metallic) edge states. Further electron ($n$-type) doping of the MOFs has been done in order to place the Fermi level within the non-trivial energy gap; where we find that in (RuC$_4$S$_4$)$_3$, in addition to the up-shift of the Fermi level, the MAE energy increases by 40\%. Finally, we show that in MOF/graphene (vdW) interfaces, the Fermi level tunning can be done with an external electric field, which controls the charge transfer at the MOF/graphene interface, giving rise to switchable topologically protected edge currents in MOFs.

Abstract:In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) magnetic heterostructures have captured widespread interest as they provide a fertile ground for exploring the novel properties induced by interfacial magnetic coupling, modulating the intrinsic magnetism of the 2D magnet, and exploiting new spintronic device applications. In this Spotlight on Applications, dominating synthetic strategies employed to fabricate 2D magnetic heterostructures are introduced first. Notably, we then concentrate on two different kinds of magnetic interfaces, namely, the magnetic-nonmagnetic interface and the magnetic-magnetic interface. Specifically, various interface modulated magnetisms such as valley splitting and the anomalous Hall effect as well as their related device applications such as magnetic tunnel junctions have been further reviewed and discussed. Finally, we briefly summarize the recent progress of 2D magnetic heterostructures and outline the future development direction of this booming field.

Heterodimensional Kondo superlattices with strong anisotropy

Abstract:Localized magnetic moments in non-magnetic materials, by interacting with the itinerary electrons, can profoundly change the metallic properties, developing various correlated phenomena such as the Kondo effect, heavy fermion, and unconventional superconductivity. In most Kondo systems, the localized moments are introduced through magnetic impurities. However, the intrinsic magnetic properties of materials can also be modulated by the dimensionality. Here, we report the observation of Kondo effect in a heterodimensional superlattice VS2-VS, in which arrays of the one-dimensional (1D) VS chains are encapsulated by two-dimensional VS2 layers. In such a heterodimensional Kondo superlattice, we observe the typical Kondo effect but with intriguing anisotropic field dependence. This unique anisotropy is determined to originate from the magnetic anisotropy which has the root in the unique 1D chains in the structure, as corroborated by the first-principles calculation. Our results open up a novel avenue of studying exotic correlated physics in heterodimensional materials.
Tunable Magnetic Anisotropy in Two-Dimensional CrX3/AlN (x=i,br,cl) Heterostructures

Abstract:Controlling the magnetic anisotropy of two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets (FMs) is of great importance for the development of next generation spintronics. Here, by combining the 2D FM chromium trihalides CrX3 (X = I, Br, Cl) monolayer (ML) with the fully hydrogenated bilayer AlN (AlN-2L) together, the electronic and magnetic properties, especially the magnetic anisotropies, of CrX3/AlN heterostructures (CrX3 HSs) are systematically investigated based on first-principles calculations. When the polarization direction of AlN-2L reverses, the magnetic easy axis of CrX3 MLs can be switched between out-of-plane and in-plane directions. Particularly the magnetic anisotropic energy is tuned by a maximum of 200% variation in CrI3/AlN. It is shown that the different effects of AlN-2L on the modulation of the magnetic easy axis of CrX3 MLs are related to their different interfacial charge transfer/redistribution across their interfaces. In addition, a transition from FM semiconductor to half-metal is found in all CrX3 MLs when the polarization direction points toward CrX3 MLs. Our results suggest a feasible avenue for the design of van der Waals HSs to realize the control of magnetic anisotropy in 2D FMs.

Abstract:Multicomponent crystalline heterostructures are a powerful approach to integrate different functional materials into the ordered structures. Here we describe three-dimensional spherical assembly of binary organic solids that consist of electron donor and acceptor molecules. A mechanistic study of heterostructure formation reveals that the dewetting and drying-mediated assembly processes are responsible for the spherical crystallite formation. The assembled spherical heterostructures are highly tunable, crystalline and chemically stable, exhibiting phase separation controlled optoelectronic behavior. This simple, generalizable three-dimensional assembly can be modified for the formation of ordered functional organic multicomponent heterostructures for emerging applications.
Coexistence of Dirac Fermions and Magnons in a Layered Two-Dimensional Semiquinoid Metal-Organic Framework

Abstract:We predict the magnetic and electronic properties of a novel metal-organic framework. By combining density functional theory and density matrix renormalization group approaches, we find the diatomic Kagome crystal structure of the metal-semiquinoid framework (H$_2$NMe$_2$)$_2$M$_2$(Cl$_2$dhbq)$_3$ (M = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) to host a rich variety of antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) Dirac semimetallic, spin-polarized Dirac fermions, and flat band magnetic insulators and metallic phases. Concomitantly, the spin excitation spectrum of the various magnetic systems display multiple Dirac-like and nodal-ring crossings. This suggests that the metal-semiquinoid system is an ideal platform for examining the intertwining of Dirac fermions and magnons.

Abstract:We characterize molecular magnet heterojunctions in which sublimated CoPc films as thin as 5 nm are sandwiched between transparent conducting bottom-layer indium tin oxide and top-layer soft-landing eutectic GaIn (EGaIn) electrodes. The roughness of the cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) films was determined by atomic force microscopy to be on the order of several nanometers, and crystalline ordering of lying-down planar molecules was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics reveal the onset of a superconducting gap at Tc = 6 K, which together with higher temperature fits to a modified Simmons' model, provide incontrovertible evidence for direct quantum mechanical tunneling processes through the magnetic molecules in our heterojunctions. The voltage dependent features in the differential conductance measurements relate to spin states of single molecules or aggregates of molecules and should prove to be important for quantum information device development.

Abstract:Dirac semimetal is an emerging class of quantum matters, ranging from 2D category, such as, graphene and surface states of topological insulator to 3D category, for instance, Cd3As2 and Na3Bi. As 3D Dirac semimetals typically possess Fermi-arc surface states, the 2D-3D Dirac van der Waals heterostructures should be promising for future electronics. Here, graphene-Cd3As2 heterostructures are fabricated through direct layer-by-layer stacking. The electronic coupling results in a notable interlayer charge transfer, which enables us to modulate the Fermi level of graphene through Cd3As2. A planar graphene p-n-p junction is achieved by selective modification, which demonstrates quantized conductance plateaus. Moreover, compared with the bare graphene device, the graphene-Cd3As2 hybrid device presents large nonlocal signals near the Dirac point due to the charge transfer from the spin-polarized surface states in the adjacent Cd3As2. The results enrich the family of van der Waals heterostructure and should inspire more studies on the application of Dirac/Weyl semimetals in spintronics.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials provide a versatile platform for the integration of diverse crystals, enabling the formation of heterostructures with intriguing functionalities. Coherently growing 2D heterostructures are highly desirable for property manipulation due to their strong interfacial interaction. In this work, we propose a general synthesis approach and provide insight into well-designed 2D binary-ternary magnetic heterostructures. Atomically sharp interfaces were achieved in typical lateral and vertical Cr1+mSe2(001)/CuCr2Se4(111) heterostructures owing to their similar lattice arrangement, with the observation of a significant enhancement of optical second-harmonic generation. Further magnetism measurements revealed a Curie temperature up to 360 K and thickness- and temperature-dependent magnetism in this heterostructure. Additionally, we synthesized three analogous 2D magnetic heterostructures in Fe-Cr-S, Co-Cr-S, and Cu-Cr-S systems, demonstrating the ubiquitous nature of the coherent heteroepitaxy. Our work involves the development of an innovative platform for investigating the underlying physics and potential applications of 2D binary-ternary heterostructures as well as the fabrication of associated functional devices.

Abstract:Due to the excellent properties of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials, 2D van der Waals magnetic heterostructures have obtained more research in nanoelectronics. In this work, the electronic and magnetic properties in 2D graphyne/VI3 (γ-GY/VI3) magnetic heterostructures have been elaborately examined on account of first-principles calculations. Furthermore, the formation of heterostructures significantly enhances the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of VI3 monolayer. At compressive strains, VI3 monolayer of γ-GY/VI3 heterostructure realizes a shift from semiconductor to metal characteristic, and this significantly enhances the electrical conductivity of VI3 monolayer. Moreover, through shortening the interlayer distance in γ-GY/VI3 heterostructures, the spin-up half-metallic state appears in VI3 monolayer. Both compressive strains and interlayer distance can also enhance the interlayer interaction, charge transfer and PMA of γ-GY/VI3 heterostructure. These tunable electronic properties show that γ-GY/VI3 heterostructures can become potential alternatives applicable to nanoelectronic and spintronic device design.
