Abstract:To understand the development of Ocean Engineering research both in China and worldwide, a bibliometric study based on the Science Citation Index-Expanded has been made. The research in this field has lasted for nearly half a century. The period from 2010 to 2014 is the rapid developing period for China whose annual output has been close to USA by 2014. Though abundant in output, China did not performance equally well in terms of citation counts and h-index. Dalian University of Technology is the only Chinese institute that has ranked among the top ten productive institutes in the world. The journal China Ocean Engineering has published the majority articles produced by China and it is the only journal published by China in the field of Ocean Engineering. In order to give insight into the smaller impact of China in the field, this study has compared the collaborative relationship of China in detail both from the aspects of countries and institutes.

Abstract:This essay provides a review on the recreational waterfront foreign literatures searched on SSCI and SCI databases,highlighting representative perspectives in the research that has been conducted to date.Study contents include four study modules of waterfront environment protection,waterfront recreation conflict,waterfront recreation management as well as waterfront recreation value evaluation.Differences in study contents exist between Chinese and foreign scholars in terms of research perspective,positioning of waterfront recreation on community and direction of waterfront recreational spatial development.Based on depth analysis of these differences,this essay briefly discusses the enlightenment on Chinese relevant studies.
Comparative Study of Chinese-English Scientific Topic Ranking Correlations: Computer Science Perspective

Abstract:Topic ranking is an important issue for information retrieval and organization, and in this study, we con-ducted a comprehensive exploration of this issue from static global and dynamic historical perspectives, focusing on a comparative study of Chinese-English scientific topic rank correlations in each dataset, which was based on bibli-ometrics such as the frequency, number of citations, and PageRank value. In the experiment, which was conducted on an English dataset extracted from the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and a Chinese dataset extracted from the Wanfang knowledge platform, the correlation relationships of Chinese and English topic rankings were re-vealed and compared using different ranking methods in different historical stages, as well as a dynamic change in the features of different correlation relationships. The experiment results show that, at the different historical stages, the Chinese and English topic rankings using different ranking methods all have positive correlations, and that an English topic ranking in a certain historical stage, with the development of time, will have increasing positive correlations with the Chinese topic rankings. Different ranking methods will change the time range of this increasingly positive correlation effect.

Abstract:Based on publications covered by the Web of Science in engineering field,international collaboration between the UK and China has been explored from various perspectives.Comparative studies are mainly focused on China’s collaboration with the USA,Germany,Japan and India.The Integrated Impact Indicator(I3) created by Loet Leydesdorff and his coauthors is used for evaluating impact of publications.China has entered a fast developing period in engineering research,China’s internationally collaborated publications have increased exponentially.The USA,the UK,Canada,Singapore,Japan and Australia are China’s major partners in the concerned area.Collaboration between China and the UK,contributes greatly to the productivity of the UK but not so to that of China.China’s impact in engineering field has increased significantly.International collaboration plays an important role in raising impact of either China or the UK.

Abstract:With the promulgation of a series of marine economy policies, China has paid more attention to coastal zone and sea exploitation instead of land region.Therefore, allocating coastal land resource are vital in developing marine economy.Analyzing literatures on coastal land by bibliometrics analysis, we found that the domestic research started lately but grew rapidly in recent ten years.Besides, the researches drew the attention of journals in different disciplines, and mainly focused on empirical studies and metrological studies.The existing Chinese literatures on coastal land can be classified into five aspects: (1)Coastal land use cover change and its driving forces, environmental externalities;(2)Coastal land ecological research concentrating on landscape ecology, ecological service value and ecological evaluation;(3)Assessments of coastal land from perspective on economic development and ecological protection;(4)Research on coastal land use situations, issues and optimized strategies;(5)Exploration of integrated technology of geography information system and remote sensing based on coastal land use.In addition, research prospect has been explored from four directions including coastal land use change and global effects, integrated coastal zone management, analysis on oversea coastal land, discovery and application of integrated research metrology, which can provide reference and guidance for the further discuss in coastal land use.

Abstract:This study was designed to evaluate China’s scientific output of chemical engineering in Science Citation Index Expanded in the Web of Science from 1992 to 2011. The document type, language, trend and collaboration patterns were analyzed, as well as the output of different journals. Distributions of article titles and abstracts, author keywords, KeyWords Plus of different periods, and the most cited articles were studied to figure out the research focuses and trends. Chinese Journal of Catalysis , Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research , and Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering published most of Chinese articles in the area of chemical engineering. The Chemical Engineering Department of Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Tianjin University, and East China University of Science and Technology were the top four institutions that published most articles in China. This study showed that adsorption, photocatalysis and synthesis have been the hot points of research in the past two decades, while ionic liquid tends to be the new area of special interest in future. Pseudo-second order model for sorption processes is getting more and more popular with great influence since its publication. In addition, the ratio of institutional independent articles: nationally collaborative articles: internationally collaborative articles has been developed to compare different institutions’ publication characteristics.
Openness and Knowledge Sharing of Economics,Sociology,Law and Politics:A Comparative Study on Citations of Chinese Social Science Journals

Abstract:As an important part of academic papers which comply with the norms of social science research,citations themselves are of great research value.On the basis of the collection of citation data from top Chinese journals in economics,sociology,law and politics and on the basis of internal and international comparison research,we find that economics and sociology are more open to research abroad while law and politics are less open.And in these subjects,the level of citations to other social sciences is comparatively low.We also find that the percentage of self-citation in economics decreased significantly while that in sociology,law and politics increased moderately between 1998 and 2008 according to the results of the comparison of interdisciplinary citations.On the other hand,the percentage of interdisciplinary citation of sociology and law to economics are quite high,while the percentage of interdisciplinary citation of politics to economics is low.We think that the lack of interdisciplinary journals and the lack of researchers are two key reasons for the underdevelopment of interdisciplinary research in China.

Abstract:The study explores the characteristics of China's independent research articles published from 1980 to 2011, based on the database of Science Citation Index Expanded. The publication outputs of seven major industrialized countries including Canada, France, Japan, Germany, Italy, the UK, and the USA were compared with China. Annual production, field performance, research emphases and trends, top articles, as well as main institutional and individual contributors by its top cited articles were analyzed. Some newly developed indicators related to words in title, author keywords, KeyWords Plus, first author, corresponding author, and Y-index were employed to provide in-depth information on topic and author contributions. Results showed that China has been closing the gap with the USA with the greatest growth, and has stood the second since 2006. Most top cited articles were published in 2000s, made up approximately seven tenths of total articles. Pronounced activities were found in chemistry and physics related categories. The core categories included multidisciplinary chemistry, physical chemistry, multidisciplinary materials science, and applied physics. Moreover, China's performance of nanotechnology and science, especially carbon nanotubes, nanoparticles, nanowires, and nanostructures showed dramatic growth. Six top articles with at least 1000 citations were examined, and were observed to concern medicine, nanotube, and adsorption. In addition, main contributing institutions and authors were also revealed and evaluated. Chinese Academy of Sciences played a dominant role, and Tsinghua University, Peking University and five universities in Hong Kong showed good scientific performance.

Abstract:Although China's marine industry has made great progress under the promotion of the "Belt and Road" initiative, the deep-sea strategy, and the strategy of marine power. However, there are still shortcomings with unreasonable industrial structure and insufficient innovation capabilities in the field. Therefore, compared with the current status of the research on the marine industry at home and abroad, it is necessary to provide a reference for the optimization of the development path of the marine industry at the forefront and hotspots at home and abroad. [Research methods] This article adopts the bibliometrics method, with the help of the theme search method, 769 and 946 relevant literature were retrieved from WOS and CNKI databases, and the data were analyzed visually and quantitatively from the publishing trend, authors and institutions, keyword topics and highly cited literature in the field of the marine industry. [Conclusion]The amount of literature was affected by policies, environment, and human behavior. Since 2008, the gap between chinese and foreign literature has gradually opened up, and the number of chinese and foreign literature peaked in 2013 and 2020 respectively. The number of publications, citation frequency, and author cooperation intensity of chinese authors is higher than those of international authors, but there is room for improvement in institutional cooperation intensity. Both at home and abroad focus on the theoretical construction of marine industry development, the sustainable development, and optimization of the marine industry, as well as the development and utilization of marine resources. However, there are many international research achievements in the field of Marine science and technology development. Developing green emerging industries, promoting industrial upgrading, providing policies, funds, and talent support to promote technological innovation, rational use of marine resources, and sustainable development capabilities are conducive to the high-quality development of the marine industry.

Abstract:During the last decade, tidal stream and wave energy technologies have made significant progress. A number of large-scale prototypes have been deployed around the world. In this article, the recent development in some western countries and China is presented. Taken as the representatives from European and American continent, UK, Portugal and US are chosen to compare with China in resource assessment, research& development, and policy aspects. With an analysis of similarities and differences, the major elements that have great effect on development of ocean energy industry are concluded, and some suggestions are given to improve the development of tidal stream and wave energy technology.

Abstract:This study is a bibliometric analysis on ocean circulation-related research for the period 1991-2005. Selected documents included "ocean circulation, sea circulation, seas circulation, marine circulation, and circulation ocean" as a part of the title, abstract or keywords. Analyzed parameters included the document type, the article output, the article distribution in journals, the publication activity of countries, and institutes and the authorship. An indicator, citation per publication (CPP) was applied to evaluate the scientific impact of a publication. The relationship between cumulative articles and the year was modeled. Three dominant categories were picked out, and their output increase was modeled. The USA was found to be leading the research with 47% share of total articles, with a CPP up to 5.9. Woods Hole Oceanography Institute in the USA was the most productive institute with a CPP of 6.8. In the citation analysis, a 5th year citation mode was found. A paper life model was applied to compare the cumulative citations increasing rates of different years.

Abstract:Purpose China has established 14 marine economic development demonstration zones in 2018, which has become an important step in exploring the high-quality development of the marine economy. The paper statistically analyzes the documents related to the field of marine economy and special economic zones (SEZs) and strives to find out the hot spots, intersections and related development contexts of the two in the research direction, so as to provide some ideas for later research. Design/methodology/approach By taking the bibliographic information data of “Marine Economy” and “Special Economic Zone” in the Web of Science database as a sample, the paper applies the Citespace bibliometric tool to analyze the evolution of disciplinary distribution, research country, author collaboration and research hotspot trends in the two fields. Findings It can be found from the paper results that the current research on marine economy and SEZs involves the intersection of many disciplines. China and the United States are the leaders in this field. However, there is more extensive cooperation between authors from different countries, but the cooperation depth needs to be strengthened. At the same time, compared with the terrestrial economy, the trend of its research hotspots is lagging to a certain extent. Moreover, there is still no systematic and professional research paradigm on marine economy. Research limitations/implications At present, there are a few research studies on marine economic development demonstration areas or marine SEZs, and related bibliographical references are incomplete, which leads to insufficient samples, and bibliometric methods cannot fully reveal the general research rules and development trends in this field. Originality/value The research on the marine economic development demonstration area is still in its infancy. The paper jointly analyzes the literature in the two fields of marine economy and SEZs, aims to find the intersection and related research hotspots of the two, and provides references for the future research of marine development demonstration areas, which is of certain practical significance.

Abstract:This paper analyzes international strategies and projects about mid-ocean ridge research, including the research plans and funded projects of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program and InterRidge and Scientific Com-mittee on Oceanic Research. In addition, the publication output of mid-ocean ridge research is studied using bibli-ometric methods. The research trend and hotspots are comprehensively analyzed by social network method, VOS-viewer and Histcite softwares. The United States has the strongest research competitiveness. The proportion of pa-pers issued in China is very high in the past 3 years, which indicates that more and more attention has been paid to the research in this field. The main cooperative partner of China in mid-ocean ridge research is the United States. The study of hydrothermal ecosystem and lithogeochemistry of mid-ocean ridge are hotspots. It is considered that the results reported in this paper may be of use for further research and for the formation of policies within China.

Abstract:With the development of civil engineering sustainability, the scope of corresponding research covers a broader range. It is difficult for researchers to master the holistic situation of the study, leading to duplication and lag of their research. Therefore, this paper aims to present a state-of-the-art of the research of civil engineering sustainability by adopting two new methods (bibliometric and social network analysis) to review the literature of this field. It is concluded that the existing research takes engineering as the main subject to improve its sustainability through technologies. Current research mainly focuses on technological innovations and evaluations of environmental impacts in the fields of construction technology, energy consumption, material preparation, and design. The countries with the largest number of published articles are the United States and China. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is the institution that has published more articles than others. Journal of Cleaner Production and Sustainability are the journals that have published the most articles. For the researchers, a professor of the University of Adelaide is the researcher who has published the most articles, and experts from South China University of Technology, Chongqing University, and University of Brighton are the main hubs among different researchers.

Scientometric Analysis of Coastal Eutrophication Research During the Period of 1993 to 2008

Abstract:No studies were reported on the field of coastal eutrophication research by using bibliometrics. The objective of this study was to evaluate the coastal eutrophication research performance based on all the related articles in Science Citation Index databases from 1993 to 2008. Document type, publication output, authorship, keywords, publication pattern, country, and institute of publication were analyzed. The USA contributed 35.0% of total articles where the ten major industrial countries accounted for the majority of the total production. An indicator citation per publication was presented in this study to evaluate the impact of number of authors, institutes, countries, and journals. The mean value of citation per publication of collaborative papers was higher than that of single country or institute publications. Collaboration trend was toward multi-authors, multi-institutes and multi-countries papers. This was coincident with the research trends of coastal eutrophication, which was thought to be a component of global change. Additionally, keywords analysis was used to indicate the formation and shift of hot research.
A comparative bibliometric analysis of Chinese and foreign articles in environmental footprint family (EFF) research

Abstract:Research on environmental footprint family (EFF), including these studies of environmental footprints and footprint family, has been widely applied to environmental impact assessment and sustainability evaluation. Although some bibliometric studies have focused on footprint indicators, there is still the lack of the contrast of Chinese and foreign literature in the field of EFF and the conclusions of successful practices at home and abroad in recent years. Unlike most previous papers, we improve the search strategy for collecting accurate documents data and compare China and foreign from a unified international perspective. Two datasets covering 1103 Chinese and 6011 foreign articles between 1996 and 2019 were collected to compare their bibliometric differences in EFF research. We not only comparatively investigate the overview of Chinese and foreign articles in EFF field based on the objects of publications, journals, authors, and institutions, but also explore their differences in the conceptual and intellectual structure from the aspects of keywords and citation analysis. For example, we can deduce that Chinese articles tend to engage in applied research and lack of theoretical innovations and breakthroughs in this field. Our comparative research results are useful and helpful for the public, policymakers, and researchers in this filed.
