To capture user innovation and to maintain quality of software and productivity of teams, these projects need to attract and retain contributors. Aim: We want to understand and quantify how inflow and retention are shaped by policies and actions of companies in three application server projects. Method: We identified three hybrid projects implementing the same JavaEE specification and used published literature, online materials, and interviews to quantify actions and policies companies used to get involved. We collected project repository data, analyzed affiliation history of project participants, and used generalized linear models and survival analysis to measure contributor inflow and retention. Results: We identified coherent groups of policies and actions undertaken by sponsoring companies as three models of community involvement and quantified tradeoffs between the inflow and retention each model provides. We found that full control mechanisms and high intensity of commercial involvement were associated with a decrease of external inflow and with improved retention. However, a shared control mechanism was associated with increased external inflow contemporaneously with the increase of commercial involvement. Implications: Inspired by a natural experiment, our methods enabled us to quantify aspects of the balance between community and private interests in open- source software projects and provide clear implications for the structure of future open-source communities.

Abstract:Commercial participation continues to grow in open source software (OSS) projects and novel arrangements appear to emerge in company-dominated projects and ecosystems. What is the nature of these novel arrangements? Does volunteers’ participation remain critical for these ecosystems? Despite extensive research on commercial participation in OSS, the exact nature and extent of company contributions to OSS development, and the impact of this engagement may have on the volunteer community have not been clarified. To bridge the gap, we perform an exploratory study of OpenStack: a large OSS ecosystem with intense commercial participation. We quantify companies’ contributions via the developers that they provide and the commits made by those developers. We find that companies made far more contributions than volunteers and the distribution of the contributions made by different companies is also highly unbalanced. We observe eight unique contribution models based on companies’ commercial objectives and characterize each model according to three dimensions: contribution intensity, extent, and focus. Companies providing full cloud solutions tend to make both intensive (more than other companies) and extensive (involving a wider variety of projects) contributions. Usage-oriented companies make extensive but less intense contributions. Companies driven by particular business needs focus their contributions on the specific projects addressing these needs. Minor contributors include community players (e.g., the Linux Foundation) and research groups. A model relating the number of volunteers to the diversity of contribution shows a strong positive association between them.

Abstract:Numerous studies examine potential facilitators and inhibitors of open source software (OSS) adoption at the firm level. This study represents the first attempt to propose and test a multi-level framework, examining the effects of five country-level variables and two under-explored firm-level factors on firm OSS adoption. The findings suggest that a country's uncertainty avoidance orientation has a positive impact on OSS adoption, whereas power distance orientation and economic development have a negative impact on OSS adoption. In addition, uncertainty avoidance at the country level sets boundaries for the effect of firm-level IT-based networks in away that the impact of proprietary IT-based networks becomes stronger, but that of open IT-based networks becomes weaker when uncertainty avoidance is high rather than low. The study also develops public policy implications from these findings.

Abstract:Whereas most research on Internetware has focused on new technologies for keeping track of a changing Internet, little attention has been paid to the software development process. A large portion of the software running the Internet is open source software. Open source software is developed both by volunteers and commercial companies, often jointly. Companies get involved in open source projects for commercial reasons, and bring with them a commercial software development process. Thus, it is important to understand how commercial involvement affects the software development process of open source projects. This article presents case studies of three open source application servers that are being developed jointly by a volunteer community and one primary software company. We are interested in better understanding developer behavior, specifically task distribution and performance, based on whether the developer is an external contributor, e.g., a volunteer working in their spare time, or a commercial developer from inside the primary backing company who is being paid for their time. To achieve this, we look at issue reporting as an example of commercial involvement in open source projects. In particular, we investigate the distribution of tasks among volunteers and commercial developers by studying the source of reported issues and quantify the task performance on user experience via the issue resolution speed. We construct measures based on historical records in issue tracking repositories. Our results show that, with intensified commercial involvement, the majority of issue reporting tasks would be undertaken by commercial developers, and issue resolution time would be reduced, implying a better user experience. We hope our methods and results provide practical insights for designing an efficient hybrid development process in the Internetware environment.

Abstract:A central concern for the long-term vibrancy of virtual communities is how to effectively motivate continuous contributions from community members. To address this challenge, a series of motivation factors that range from self-interest driven to prosocial-oriented motives have been identified by scholars. As members participate in continuous contributions and community activities alike, their status or positions within the virtual communities would change, which may influence their cognition and behavior. While status-seeking can lead to greater contributions and a better performance, research has yet to study in a comprehensive manner how an individual's status-standing shape one's recognition and behavior in a systematic way. To fill this research gap, a comprehensive theoretical model based on the status theory of collective action is proposed to explain how status standing moderates the impact of different types of motivations (self-interest vs. prosocial) on continuous contributions in virtual communities. Our findings suggest that improved status-standing can enhance the motivational incentives of virtual rewards and peer recognition, while boosting the prosocial motivation of opinion leadership to contribute content in virtual communities. Overall, this study not only suggests a comprehensive view of our current understandings regarding contribution behavior in virtual communities, but also yields deep insights into how motivational mechanism of virtual communities can be reasonably designed and properly used to promote continuous contributions.

Abstract:There are a lot of differences between the open source software development approaches and the traditional software engineering methods.If commercial organizations want to join the open source community,they must make some adjustments in their own original software development approach and business model.In this case,an urgent problem needs to be solved immediately is what involvement model the commercial organizations should adopt to achieve their goals of joining the open source community.This paper first collects project text data from the Internet as a basis for qualitative analysis using snowball-sampling collection mechanisms.Then,based on the classical grounded theory,it summarizes different commercial organizations' involvement model in open source projects through filtering and analyzing these data.Finally,the study extracts four kinds of general involvement model which can provide decision supports and experience references to those commercial organizations who want to join the open source software projects.
What Make Long Term Contributors: Willingness and Opportunity in OSS Community

Abstract:To survive and succeed, software projects need to attract and retain contributors. We model the individual's chances to become a valuable contributor through her capacity, willingness, and the opportunity to contribute at the time of joining. Using issue tracking data of Mozilla and Gnome, we find that the probability for a new joiner to become a Long Term Contributor (LTC) is associated with her willingness and environment. Specifically, during their first month, future LTCs tend to be more active and show more community-oriented attitude than other joiners. Joiners who start by commenting on instead of reporting an issue or ones who succeed to get at least one reported issue to be fixed, more than double their odds of becoming an LTC. The micro-climate with a productive and clustered peer group increases the odds. On the contrary, the macro-climate with high project popularity and the micro-climate with low attention from peers reduce the odds. This implies that the interaction between individual's attitude and project's climate are associated with the odds that an individual would become a valuable contributor or disengage from the project. Our findings may provide a basis for empirical approaches to design a better community architecture and to improve the experience of contributors.

Abstract:To achieve commercial goals, companies have made substantial contributions to large open-source software (OSS) ecosystems such as OpenStack and have become the main contributors. However, they often withdraw their employees for a variety of reasons, which may affect the sustainability of OSS projects. While the turnover of individual contributors has been extensively investigated, there is a lack of knowledge about the nature of companies’ withdrawal. To this end, we conduct a mixed-methods empirical study on OpenStack to reveal how common company withdrawals were, to what degree withdrawn companies made contributions, and what the rationale behind withdrawals was. By analyzing the commit data of 18 versions of OpenStack, we find that the number of companies that have left is increasing and even surpasses the number of companies that have joined in later versions. Approximately 12% of the companies in each version have exited by the next version. Compared to the sustaining companies that joined in the same version, the withdrawn companies tend to have a weaker contribution intensity but contribute to a similar scope of repositories in OpenStack. Through conducting a developer survey, we find four aspects of reasons for companies’ withdrawal from OpenStack: company, community, developer, and project. The most common reasons lie in the company aspect, i.e., the company either achieved its goals or failed to do so. By fitting the survival analysis model, we find that commercial goals are associated with the probability of the company’s withdrawal, and that a company’s contribution intensity and scale are positively correlated with its retention. Maintaining good retention is important but challenging for OSS ecosystems, and our results may shed light on potential approaches to improve company retention and reduce the negative impact of company withdrawal.

Abstract:Open source software (OSS) has been playing a fundamental role in not onlyinformation technology but also our social lives. Attracted by variousadvantages of OSS, increasing commercial companies take extensive participationin open source development and have had a broad impact. This paper provides acomprehensive systematic literature review (SLR) of existing research oncompany participation in OSS. We collected 92 papers and organized them basedon their research topics, which cover three main directions, i.e.,participation motivation, contribution model, and impact on OSS development. Wefound the explored motivations of companies are mainly from economic,technological, and social aspects. Existing studies categorize companies'contribution models in OSS projects mainly through their objectives and howthey shape OSS communities. Researchers also explored how commercialparticipation affects OSS development. We conclude with research challenges andpromising research directions on commercial participation in OSS. This studycontributes to a comprehensive understanding of commercial participation in OSSdevelopment.
How Developers Participate in Open Source Projects : a Replicate Case Study on JBossAS , JOnAS and Apache Geronimo

Abstract:Ten years passed from the study of how open source projects develop compared with commercial projects by Mockus et al. More and more companies have been joining and supporting open source projects. Have they changed the essence of OSS development? Do the hypotheses in the former study still hold? In this paper we replicate Apache study to understand the current situation of open source development, in particular, the developers’ participation in the commercially supported OSS projects. We investigate three open source projects from J2EE platform domain: JBossAS, JOnAS, and Apache Geronimo, which all have a commercial background. By answering five of seven of the research questions in Apache study, we evaluate four of the seven hypotheses finding the following: the number of the core developers was around 15 in JOnAS and Geronimo. But the JBossAS had a much larger core team; all the three projects haven’t achieved a large number of outside contributors to free the core developers from finding and repairing defects; most of the non-core developers participated in the projects contributing with new functionality; all three projects reacted faster to customer problems than the commercial projects described in the former study but slower than in Apache. It appears that the commercial support can attract more volunteers to the projects, and drives the developers to be more sensitive to the priority specified by the issue reporters when they fix defects.

Abstract:Company engagement in open source (OSS) is now the new norm. From large technology companies to startups, companies are participating in the OSS ecosystem by open-sourcing their technology, sponsoring projects through funding or paid developer time. However, our understanding of the OSS ecosystem is rooted in the 'old world' model where individual contributors sustain OSS projects. In this work, we create a more comprehensive understanding of the hybrid OSS landscape by investigating what motivates companies to contribute and how they contribute to OSS. We conducted interviews with 20 participants who have different roles (e.g., CEO, OSPO Lead, Ecosystem Strategist) at 17 different companies of different sizes from large companies (e.g. Microsoft, RedHat, Google, Spotify) to startups. Data from semi-structured interviews reveal that company motivations can be categorized into four levels (Founders' Vision, Reputation, Business Advantage, and Reciprocity) and companies participate through different mechanisms (e.g., Developers' Time, Mentoring Time, Advocacy & Promotion Time), each of which tie to the different types of motivations. We hope our findings nudge more companies to participate in the OSS ecosystem, helping make it robust, diverse, and sustainable.

Abstract:Open source software (OSS), and open innovation in general, has received increasing attention from both researchers and practitioners. Based on recent literature on social preference from behavior economics, we propose a finite-horizon dynamic model to study the interactions between OSS developers who are either purely self-interested or conditional cooperators. We find that selfinterested developers who are predicted to free ride under conventional analysis may contribute to a public good, and the existence of purely these developers may, under certain conditions, even benefit the provision of a public good. We further analyze how code architecture affects OSS development outcome and propose that a higher level of code modularity leads to more code contributions overall, due to the strategic behavior of self-interested developers. However, a right mix of the two types of developers plays a critical role for modular design to make an impact. The findings bear important theoretical as well as practical implications and provide guidelines for OSS development and the collective innovation in general.

Abstract:We sought to gain understanding of voluntary developers’ involvement in open source software (OSS) projects. Data were collected from voluntary developers working on open source projects. Our findings indicated that a voluntary developer's involvement was very important to his or her performance and that involvement was dependent on individual motivations (personal software needs, reputation and skills gaining expectation, enjoyment in open source coding) and project community factors (leadership effectiveness, interpersonal relationship, community ideology). Our work contributes theoretically and empirically to the body of OSS research and has practical implications for OSS project management.
Mining the Contributions Along the Lifecycles of Open-Source Projects

Abstract:Recently the impact of developers’ behavior on the evolution of open-source software (OSS) has become a hot topic. When does the developer commit his/her code? Is there any regularity of the time distribution of commit along the lifecycles of open-source project? Will the change of the core member in a development team has an impact on software evolution process? We are quite interested in these above questions so we conducted an empirical study in this paper. We collect more than 50,000 commits from 6 open-source software in Github and design a formula to measure the contributor’s contribution value. We then take four major experiments to analyze some issues about inert intervals and the impact of the change of main contributors on software evolution. To make the result visible, we also design an automatic mining tool which can automatically mine the metadata from specified repository and make it graphically presented. Through the experiments we gained some interesting findings such as there is no inevitable statistical connection between a contributor’s inert interval and his contribution value, and main contributors’ change has a huge impact on the software evolution. We believe that these findings will have deeper research significance in the future.
CROSS: A Contributor-Project Interaction Lifecycle Model for Open Source Software

Abstract:Despite the widespread adoption of open source software (OSS), its sustainability remains a critical concern, particularly in light of security vulnerabilities and the often inadequate end-of-service (EoS) processes for OSS projects as they decline. Existing models of OSS community participation, like the Onion model and the episodic contribution model, offer valuable insights but are fundamentally incompatible and fail to provide a comprehensive picture of contributor engagement with OSS projects. This paper addresses these gaps by proposing the CROSS model, a novel contributor-project interaction lifecycle model for open source, which delineates the various lifecycle stages of contributor-project interaction, along with the driving and retaining forces pertinent to each stage. By synthesizing existing research on OSS communities, organizational behavior, and human resource development, it explains a range of archetypal cases of contributor engagement and highlights research gaps, especially in EoS/offboarding scenarios. The CROSS model provides a foundation for understanding and enhancing the sustainability of OSS projects, offering a robust foundation for future research and practical application.

Leaving My Fingerprints: Motivations and Challenges of Contributing to OSS for Social Good

Abstract:When inspiring software developers to contribute to open source software, the act is often referenced as an opportunity to build tools to support the developer community. However, that is not the only charge that propels contributions--- growing interest in open source has also been attributed to software developers deciding to use their technical skills to benefit a common societal good. To understand how developers identify these projects, their motivations for contributing, and challenges they face, we conducted 21 semi-structured interviews with OSS for Social Good (OSS4SG) contributors. From our interview analysis, we identified themes of contribution styles that we wanted to understand at scale by deploying a survey to over 5765 OSS and Open Source Software for Social Good contributors. From our quantitative analysis of 517 responses, we find that the majority of contributors demonstrate a distinction between OSS4SG and OSS. Likewise, contributors described definitions based on what societal issue the project was to mitigate and who the outcomes of the project were going to benefit. In addition, we find that OSS4SG contributors focus less on benefiting themselves by padding their resume with new technology skills and are more interested in leaving their mark on society at statistically significant levels. We also find that OSS4SG contributors evaluate the owners of the project significantly more than OSS contributors. These findings inform implications to help contributors identify high societal impact projects, help project maintainers reduce barriers to entry, and help organizations understand why contributors are drawn to these projects to sustain active participation.
The Influence of Sponsorship on Open-Source Software Developers' Activities on GitHub

Abstract:Studies on the OSS communities have shown that financial supports are critical to OSS developers and projects to maintain their progress and sustainability. However, there were few developers being paid directly for maintaining OSS projects in the past. The GitHub Sponsors program that brings financial supports to the general OSS developers in GitHub-the world's largest OSS platform may make a difference on this situation in the future. In this paper, we present a data set on GitHub Sponsors and conduct a data-driven study to analyze the participants of the program and the impact of sponsorships to developers' activities and their projects' outcomes and qualities. The results of our survey suggest that most developers state they will contribute more with sponsorships and provide some privilege for their sponsors. And through quantitative study, we find that developers make more contributions on GitHub after they got/offered sponsorships. Moreover, gaining sponsorship also has a weakly positive impact on developers' collaborators that did not get sponsorship. And not only developers, but their own or contributed projects also can be motivate by sponsorships. Our findings are useful to the community by understanding the impact of sponsorships on users' activities and projects' progress and sustainability, and helping the managers to improve the current financial support mechanism.

Abstract:Open Source Software (OSS) has come to play a critical role in the software industry. Some large ecosystems enjoy the participation of large numbers of companies, each of which has its own focus and goals. Indeed, companies that otherwise compete, may become collaborators within the OSS ecosystem they participate in. Prior research has largely focused on commercial involvement in OSS projects, but there is a scarcity of research focusing on company collaborations within OSS ecosystems. Some of these ecosystems have become critical building blocks for organizations worldwide; hence, a clear understanding of how companies collaborate within large ecosystems is essential. This paper presents the results of an empirical study of the OpenStack ecosystem, in which hundreds of companies collaborate on thousands of project repositories to deliver cloud distributions. Based on a detailed analysis, we identify clusters of collaborations, and identify four strategies that companies adopt to engage with the OpenStack ecosystem. We alsofind that companies may engage in intentional or passive collaborations, or may work in an isolated fashion. Further, wefi nd that a company's position in the collaboration network is positively associated with its productivity in OpenStack. Our study sheds light on how large OSS ecosystems work, and in particular on the patterns of collaboration within one such large ecosystem.

Abstract:[Context and motivation] Ecosystems developed as Open Source Software (OSS) are considered to be highly innovative and reactive to new market trends due to their openness and wide-ranging contributor base. Participation in OSS often implies opening up of the software development process and exposure towards new stakeholders. [Question/Problem] Firms considering to engage in such an environment should carefully consider potential opportunities and challenges upfront. The openness may lead to higher innovation potential but also to frictional losses for engaged firms. Further, as an ecosystem progresses, power structures and influence on feature selection may fluctuate accordingly. [Principal ideas/results] We analyze the Apache Hadoop ecosystem in a quantitative longitudinal case study to investigate changing stakeholder influence and collaboration patterns. Further, we investigate how its innovation and time-to-market evolve at the same time. [Contribution] Findings show collaborations between and influence shifting among rivaling and non-competing firms. Network analysis proves valuable on how an awareness of past, present and emerging stakeholders, in regards to power structure and collaborations may be created. Furthermore, the ecosystem's innovation and time-to-market show strong variations among the release history. Indications were also found that these characteristics are influenced by the way how stakeholders collaborate with each other.
