Abstract:Video telephony requires high-bandwidth and low-delay voice and video transmissions between geographically distributed users. It is challenging to deliver high-quality video telephony to end-consumers through the best-effort Internet. In this paper, we present our measurement study on three popular video telephony systems on the Internet: Google+, iChat, and Skype. Through a series of carefully designed active and passive measurements, we are able to unveil important information about their key design choices and performance, including application architecture, video generation and adaptation schemes, loss recovery strategies, end-to-end voice and video delays, resilience against random and bursty losses, etc. Obtained insights can be used to guide the design of applications that call for high-bandwidth and low-delay data transmissions under a wide range of "best-effort" network conditions.

Abstract:The emerging of third generation mobile system (3G) makes various video applications in wireless environment possible. Scalable video codec (SVC) is the latest amendment for H.264/AVC that allows efficient, standard-based temporal, spatial, and quality scalability of video bit streams. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) video services, e.g. multimedia broadcast/multicast services (MBMS), packet-switched streaming service (PSS) etc., may greatly benefit from the adoption of SVC. And 3GPP has been gradually discussing to select SVC as one of the video codec tools in 3G. But not every key technology of SVC can be implemented because of 3G wireless network's characteristic of time variation, high bit error rate, limited bandwidth, and 3G mobile terminal's limitation. So we analyze the key technology that adapts to 3G in this paper, and present compressed SVC video transmission in 3G wireless network together with the offline video transmission simulation in 3G wireless network. Here we modify the VCEG offline 3G transmission simulation model to transmit SVC byte stream format, moreover test and show the effect of SVC error resilient tools by using the model.

Abstract:As the Internet and wirless networks are developed rapidly, the demand of communicating anywhere, anytime on any device emerges. However, most of the current wireless networks still work in low bandwidths, and mobile devices still suffer from weak computational power, short battery lifetime and limited display capability. We developed portrait video phone systems that can run on Pcs and Pocket Pcs at very low bit rates through the Internet. The core technology that portrait video phones employ is the so-called portrait video (or bi-level video) codec. Portrait video codec first converts a full-color video into a black/white image sequence and then compresses it into a black/white portrait-like video. Portrait video processes clearer shape, smoother motion, shorter initial latency, and cheaper computational cost than MPEG2, MPEG4 and H.263 for low bandwidths. Typically the portrait video phone provides QCIF-size video with a frame rate of 5-15 fps for a 9.6 Kbps video bandwidth. The portrait video is so small that it can even be transmitted through an HTTP proxy as text. Experiments show that the portrait video phones work well on ordinary GSM wireless telecommunication networks.

Abstract:Video telephony is increasingly being adopted by end consumers. It is extremely challenging to deliver video calls over wireless networks. In this paper, we conduct a measurement study on three popular mobile video call applications: Face-Time, Google Plus Hangout, and Skype, over both WiFi and Cellular links. We study the following questions: 1) how they encode/decode video in realtime under tight resource constraints on mobile devices? 2) how they transmit video smoothly in the face of various wireless network impairments? 3) what is their delivered video conferencing quality under different mobile network conditions? 4) how different system architectures and design choices contribute to their delivered quality? Through detailed analysis of measurement results, we obtain valuable insights regarding the unique challenges, advantages and disadvantages of existing design solutions, and possible directions to deliver high-quality video calls in wireless networks.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThe rapid development of wired and wireless networks tremendouslyfacilitates communications between people. We developed a very lowbit-rate bi-level video coding technique, which can be used invideo communications almost anywhere, anytime on any device. Thespirit of this method is that rather than giving highest priorityto the basic colors of an image as in conventional DCT-basedcompression methods, we give preference to the outline features ofscenes when we have limited bandwidths. These features can berepresented by bi-level image sequences that are converted fromgray-scale image sequences. By analyzing the temporal correlationbetween successive frames and flexibilities in the scenepresentation using bi-level images, we achieve very high ratioswith our bi-level video compression scheme. Experiments show thatin low bandwidths, our method provides clearer shape, smoothermotion, shorter initial latency and much cheaper computational costthan do DCT-based methods. Our method is especially suitable forsmall mobile devices such as handheld PCs, palm-size PCs and mobilephones that possess small display screens and light computationalpower, and work in low bandwidth wireless networks. We have builtPC and Pocket PC versions of bi-level video phone systems, whichtypically provide QCIF-size video with a frame rate of 5-15 fps fora 9.6 Kbps bandwidth.

Abstract:Bandwidth requirements of both wireless and wired clients in access networks continue to increase rapidly, primarily due to the growth of video traffic. Application awareness can be utilized in access networks to optimize quality of experience (QoE) of end clients. In this study, we utilize information at the client-side application (e.g., video resolution) to achieve superior resource allocation that improves user QoE. We emphasize optimizing QoE of the system rather than quality of service (QoS), as user satisfaction directly relies on QoE and optimizing QoS does not necessarily optimize QoE, as shown in this study. We propose application-aware resource-allocation schemes on an Ethernet passive optical network (EPON), which supports wireless (utilizing orthogonal frequency division multiple access) and wired clients running video-conference applications. Numerical results show that the application-aware resource-allocation schemes improve QoE for video-conference applications for wired and wireless clients.

Abstract:With IT and video technologies evolving rapidly, video services with user interaction emerge, and bring about attracting experiences. The growing bandwidth and latency demands call for advanced transmission techniques which utilize wired, wireless, and 5G cellular network, and cooperate unicast, multicast, and broadcast. Free-viewpoint video, as one of the interactive video applications, can provide users with immersion of real world scenes, and shows potential to be an essential application in future digital life. However, such an application is different from other video services in aspects of computation and communication features, and existing researches are not up to the low frame latency, smooth playback, and high service scalability challenges. In this paper, we target on the above problems, and achieve ultra-low latency and stable video transmission for free-viewpoint video services by improving the performance of multiple system components accordingly. Firstly, the key performance indicator is formulated for such services, and an edge computing based video transmission schema is proposed to achieve ultra-low frame latency. Secondly, a pair of stabilization algorithms at both server and client sides based on application features are introduced to ensure stable encoded video streams before transmission, and smooth playback after that. Thirdly, a cloud-edge-client hybrid free-viewpoint service architecture is proposed, which can provide hierarchical experiences and enlarge the service scale with restricted resources. Experimental results prove the effectiveness of the proposed transmission schema and scheduling algorithms, and feasibility of the proposed service architecture is revealed by qualitative analyses.

Abstract:Videoconferencing over POTS/GSTN introduces exciting and yet unimagined potential in telecommunication. Enabling this potential is the International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication Sector (ITU-T) standard H.324 for multimedia conferencing on POTS/GSTN. Since the completion of the H.324 standard in March 1996, Intel Corporation, 8X8 Incorporated, Smith Micro and VDOnet, etc. have begun to sell their products from the middle of 1997. But unfortunately, none of them dare to claim that their product will work properly with another vendor's product. In addition, none of them give out their performance in quantities such as peak frame rate, sustained frame rate, and corresponding SNR, audio delay etc. Considering this situation, the motivation of this paper is to discuss the design, implementation and verification methodology, and also discuss the key technologies used in H.324 videophone design

Abstract:Wireless networks have been rapidly developing in recent years. General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA 1X) for wide areas, and 802.11 and Bluetooth for local areas have already emerged. Broadband wireless networks urgently call for rich contents for consumers. Among various possible applications, video communication is one of the most promising for mobile devices on wireless networks. This paper describes the generation, coding, and transmission of an effective video form, scalable portrait video for mobile video communication. As an expansion to bilevel video, portrait video is composed of more gray levels, and therefore possesses higher visual quality while it maintains a low bit rate and low computational costs. Portrait video is a scalable video in that each video with a higher level always contains all the information of the video with a lower level. The bandwidths of 2-4-level portrait videos fit into the bandwidth range of 20-40 kbps that GPRS and CDMA 1X can stably provide; therefore, portrait video is very promising for video broadcast and communication on 2.5-G wireless networks. With portrait video technology, we are the first to enable two-way video communication on pocket PCs and handheld PCs.

Abstract:There has been great interest in transporting real-time video over wireless IP networks from both industry and academia. Real-time video applications have quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. However, the fluctuations of wireless channel conditions pose many challenges to providing QoS for video transmission over wireless IP networks. It has been shown that scalable video coding and adaptive services are viable solutions under a time-varying wireless environment. We propose an adaptive framework to support quality video communication over wireless IP networks. The adaptive framework includes: (1) scalable video representations, (2) network-aware video applications, and (3) adaptive services. Under this framework, as wireless channel conditions change, the mobile terminal and network elements can scale the video streams and transport the scaled video streams to receivers with acceptable perceptual quality. The key advantages of the adaptive framework are: (1) perceptual quality is degraded gracefully under severe channel conditions; (2) network resources are efficiently utilized; and (3) the resources are shared in a fair manner

Abstract:Providing end-to-end quality of service (QoS) support is essential for video delivery over the next-generation wireless Internet. We address several key elements in the end-to-end QoS support, including scalable video representation, network-aware end system, and network QoS provisioning. There are generally two approaches in QoS support: the network-centric and the end-system centric solutions. The fundamental problem in a network-centric solution is how to map QoS criterion at different layers respectively, and optimize total quality across these layers. We first present the general framework of a cross-layer network-centric solution, and then describe the recent advances in network modeling, QoS mapping, and QoS adaptation. The key targets in end-system centric approach are network adaptation and media adaptation. We present a general framework of the end-system centric solution and investigate the recent developments. Specifically, for network adaptation, we review the available bandwidth estimation and efficient video transport protocol; for media adaptation , we describe the advances in error control, power control, and corresponding bit allocation. Finally, we highlight several advanced research directions.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a fully dynamic 3D one-to-one teleconferencing system that allows remote collaborators to see each other from different viewpoints. The local 3D scene including the participants is reconstructed with multiple calibrated color plus depth sensors and rendered under the tracked remote users viewpoint in real time. The rendering color and depth buffers are encoded as H.264 stream and transferred to the remote site. An image-based approach is applied to synthesize the desired viewing results in the remote site and reduce the interaction delay. Our system is featured with low latency, high frame rate and constant network flow.

Abstract:Providing high-quality video conferencing experience over the best-effort Internet and wireless networks is challenging, because 2D videos are bulky. In this paper, we exploit the common structure of conferencing videos for an ultra-low-bitrate video conferencing system. In particular, we design, implement, optimize, and evaluate a video conferencing system, which: (i) extracts facial landmarks, (ii) transmits the selected facial landmarks and 2D images, and (iii) warps the untransmitted 2D images at the receiver. Several optimization techniques are adopted for minimizing the running time and maximizing the video quality, e.g., the image and warping frames are optimally determined based on network conditions and video content. The experiment results from real conferencing videos reveal that our proposed system: (i) outperforms the state-of-the-art x265 by up to 11.05 dB in PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio), (ii) adapts to different video content and network conditions, and (iii) runs in real-time at about 12 frame-per-second.

Abstract:Periodic broadcasting has achieved prominent performance in VoD (Video on Demand) service in wired network. However, the development of wireless VoD service still has gone on hard and slowly in comparison to the rapid growth of mobile video service. In this paper, we propose a scalable video streaming method HQOBA (Heterogeneous Quality-Oriented Bandwidth Allocation) to address the problems in wireless network. To be concrete, in order to tackle the heterogeneous client type problem, we employ variable bandwidth allocation, instead of fixed bandwidth value for each channel. Moreover, to handle the problem of scarce server bandwidth and unpredictable wireless channel conditions, the proposed method takes the advantage of FGS (Fine Granular Scalable) video coding and Periodic Broadcasting to successfully transmit video segment. Further-more, we develop a bandwidth allocation algorithm to maximize client perceptual visual quality for the proposed transmit scheme. The experimental results of HQOBA scheme also validate the effectiveness.
Do Twin Clouds Make Smoothness for Transoceanic Video Telephony?

Abstract:Transoceanic video telephony (TVT) over the Internet is challenging due to 1) longer round-trip delay, 2) larger number of relay hops, and 3) higher packet loss rate. Real-world measurements of Skype, Face time, and QQ confirm that their TVT service quality is mostly unsatisfactory. Recently, when using We Chat to make transoceanic video calls, we are fortunate to find that it achieves stably smooth TVT. To explore how this is possible, we conduct in-depth measurements of We Chat data flow. In particular, we discover that the service provider of We Chat deploys a novel, specially designed "twin clouds" based architecture to deliver transoceanic (UDP) packets. Thus, data delivery between two callers is no longer point-to-point (used by Skype, Face time, and QQ) over the best-effort Internet. Instead, transoceanic video packets are delivered through the privileged backbone formed by twin clouds, which greatly reduces the round-trip delay, number of relay hops, and packet loss rate. Besides, whenever a packet is found lost, multiple duplicate packets are instantly sent to aggressively make up for the loss. On the other hand, we notice two-fold shortcomings of twin clouds. First, due to the sophisticated resource provisioning inside the twin clouds, the video start up time is considerably extended. Second, due to the high cost of deploying twin clouds, the capacity of the privileged backbone is limited and sometimes in shortage, and thus We Chat has to deliver data via a detour path with degraded performance. Ultimately, we believe that the twin clouds based data delivery solution will arouse a new direction of Internet video telephony research while still deserves optimization efforts.
