However, the dramatically increasing number of devices and data traffic in the Internet-of-Things (IoT) era are posing significant burdens on the capacity-limited Internet and uncontrollable service delay. It becomes difficult to meet the delay-sensitive and context-aware service requirements of IoT applications by using cloud computing alone. Facing these challenges, computing paradigms are shifting from the centralized cloud computing to distributed edge computing. Several new computing paradigms, including Transparent Computing, Mobile Edge Computing, Fog Computing, and Cloudlet, have emerged to leverage the distributed resources at network edge to provide timely and context-aware services. By integrating end devices, edge servers, and cloud, they form a hierarchical IoT architecture, i.e., End-Edge-Cloud orchestrated architecture to improve the performance of IoT systems. This article presents a comprehensive survey of these emerging computing paradigms from the perspective of end-edge-cloud orchestration. Specifically, we first introduce and compare the architectures and characteristics of different computing paradigms. Then, a comprehensive survey is presented to discuss state-of-the-art research in terms of computation offloading, caching, security, and privacy. Finally, some potential research directions are envisioned for fostering continuous research efforts.

Abstract:With the rapid development of cloud computing, edge computing, and smart devices, computing power resources indicate a trend of ubiquitous deployment. The traditional network architecture cannot efficiently leverage these distributed computing power resources due to computing power island effect. To overcome these problems and improve network efficiency, a new network computing paradigm is proposed, i.e., Computing Power Network (CPN). Computing power network can connect ubiquitous and heterogenous computing power resources through networking to realize computing power scheduling flexibly. In this survey, we make an exhaustive review on the state-of-the-art research efforts on computing power network. We first give an overview of computing power network, including definition, architecture, and advantages. Next, a comprehensive elaboration of issues on computing power modeling, information awareness and announcement, resource allocation, network forwarding, computing power transaction platform and resource orchestration platform is presented. The computing power network testbed is built and evaluated. The applications and use cases in computing power network are discussed. Then, the key enabling technologies for computing power network are introduced. Finally, open challenges and future research directions are presented as well.

Abstract:The booming development of deep learning applications and services heavily relies on large deep learning models and massive data in the cloud. However, cloud-based deep learning encounters challenges in meeting the application requirements of responsiveness, adaptability, and reliability. Edge-based and end-based deep learning enables rapid, near real-time analysis and response, but edge nodes and end devices usually have limited resources to support large models. This necessitates the integration of end, edge, and cloud computing technologies to combine their different advantages. Despite the existence of numerous studies on edge-cloud collaboration, a comprehensive survey for end-edge-cloud computing-enabled deep learning is needed to review the current status and point out future directions. Therefore, this paper: 1) analyzes the collaborative elements within the end-edge-cloud computing system for deep learning, and proposes collaborative training, inference, and updating methods and mechanisms for deep learning models under the end-edge-cloud collaboration framework. 2) provides a systematic investigation of the key enabling technologies for end-edge-cloud collaborative deep learning, including model compression, model partition, and knowledge transfer. 3) highlights six open issues to stimulate continuous research efforts in the field of end-edge-cloud deep learning.

Abstract:As the explosive growth of smart devices and the advent of many new applications, traffic volume has been growing exponentially. The traditional centralized network architecture cannot accommodate such user demands due to heavy burden on the backhaul links and long latency. Therefore, new architectures which bring network functions and contents to the network edge are proposed, i.e., mobile edge computing and caching. Mobile edge networks provide cloud computing and caching capabilities at the edge of cellular networks. In this survey, we make an exhaustive review on the state-of-the-art research efforts on mobile edge networks. We first give an overview of mobile edge networks including definition, architecture and advantages. Next, a comprehensive survey of issues on computing, caching and communication techniques at the network edge is presented respectively. The applications and use cases of mobile edge networks are discussed. Subsequently, the key enablers of mobile edge networks such as cloud technology, SDN/NFV and smart devices are discussed. Finally, open research challenges and future directions are presented as well.

Abstract:The traditional centralized architecture,known as cloud computing,cannot accommodate such user demands in an efficient and timely manner.To cope with this problem,edge computing architectures have been proposed with the core concept of that“data processing should be close to the data source”.Firstly,paradigms of edge computing was introduced,including micro data center,cloudlet,fog computing,and mobile edge computing,and the advantages of edge computing from the perspective of resource integration was discussed.Then,related works of resource optimization in edge computing was reviewed and summarized,and these works was discussed via three directions,i.e.,computation offloading,distributed caching and high performance transmission,corresponding to core resources as computing,storage and communication.Finally,trends of development and future directions were presented as well.

Abstract:With the rapid development of pervasive intelligent devices and ubiquitous network technologies, new network applications are emerging, such as the Internet of Things, smart cities, smart grids, virtual/augmented reality, and unmanned vehicles. Cloud computing, which is characterized by centralized computation and storage,is having difficulty meeting the needs of these developing technologies and applications. In recent years, a variety of network computing paradigms, such as fog computing, mobile edge computing, and dew computing, have been proposed by the industrial and academic communities. Although they employ different terminologies, their basic concept is to extend cloud computing and move the computing infrastructure from remote data centers to edge routers, base stations, and local servers located closer to users, thereby overcoming the bottlenecks experienced by cloud computing and providing better performance and user experience. In this paper, we systematically summarize and analyze the post-cloud computing paradigms that have been proposed in recent years. First, we summarize the main bottlenecks of technology and application that cloud computing encounters. Next, we analyze and summarize several post-cloud computing paradigms, including fog computing, mobile edge computing, and dew computing.Then, we discuss the development opportunities of post-cloud computing via several examples. Finally, we note the future development prospects of post-cloud computing.

Abstract:Abstract Cloud computing has recently emerged as a new paradigm for hosting and delivering services over the Internet. However, despite the fact that cloud computing offers huge opportunities to the IT industry, the development of cloud computing technology is currently at its infancy, with many issues still to be addressed. In this paper, we present a survey of cloud computing, highlighting its key concepts, architectural principles, state-of-the-art implementation as well as research challenges. Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) is impacting the world’s connectivity landscape. More and more IoT devices are connected, bringing many benefits to our daily lives. However, the influx of IoT devices poses non-trivial challenges for the existing cloud-based computing paradigm. In the cloud-based architecture, a large amount of IoT data is transferred to the cloud for data management, analysis, and decision making. It could not only cause a heavy workload on the cloud but also result in unacceptable network latency, ultimately undermining the benefits of cloud-based computing. To address these challenges, researchers are looking for new computing models for the IoT. Edge computing, a new decentralized computing model, is valued by more and more researchers in academia and industry. The main idea of edge computing is placing data processing in near-edge devices instead of remote cloud servers. It is promising to build more scalable, low-latency IoT systems. Many studies have been proposed on edge computing and IoT, but a comprehensive survey of this crossover area is still lacking. In this survey, we first introduce the impact of edge computing on the development of IoT and point out why edge computing is more suitable for IoT than other computing paradigms. Then, we analyze the necessity of systematical investigation on the edge-computing-driven IoT (ECDriven-IoT) and summarize new challenges occurring in ECDriven-IoT. We categorize recent advances from bottom to top, covering six aspects of ECDriven-IoT. Finally, we conclude lessons learned and propose some challenging

Abstract:Influenced by the great success of deep learning via cloud computing and the rapid development of edge chips, research in artificial intelligence (AI) has shifted to both of the computing paradigms, i.e., cloud computing and edge computing. In recent years, we have witnessed significant progress in developing more advanced AI models on cloud servers that surpass traditional deep learning models owing to model innovations (e.g., Transformers, Pretrained families), explosion of training data and soaring computing capabilities. However, edge computing, especially edge and cloud collaborative computing, are still in its infancy to announce their success due to the resource-constrained IoT scenarios with very limited algorithms deployed. In this survey, we conduct a systematic review for both cloud and edge AI. Specifically, we are the first to set up the collaborative learning mechanism for cloud and edge modeling with a thorough review of the architectures that enable such mechanism. We also discuss potentials and practical experiences of some on-going advanced edge AI topics including pretraining models, graph neural networks and reinforcement learning. Finally, we discuss the promising directions and challenges in this field.

Abstract:Sensor-cloud originates from extensive recent applications of wireless sensor networks and cloud computing. To draw a roadmap of the current research activities of the sensor-cloud community, we first investigate the state-of-the-art sensor-cloud literature reviews published in the recent five years, and discover that these surveys have primarily studied the sensor-cloud in specific aspects, namely, security-enabled solutions, efficient management mechanisms, and architectural challenges. Whilst the existing surveys have reviewed the sensor-cloud from various perspectives, they are inadequate for the three key issues that require urgent attention in the sensor-cloud: reliability , energy , and heterogeneity . To fill this gap, we perform a thorough survey by examining the origins of the sensor-cloud and providing an in-depth and comprehensive discussion of these three key challenges. We summarize initial designs of the new edge-based schemes to address these challenges and identify several open issues and promising future research directions.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the Internet of Everything (IoE), the number of smart devices connected to the Internet is increasing, resulting in large-scale data, which has caused problems such as bandwidth load, slow response speed, poor security, and poor privacy in traditional cloud computing models. Traditional cloud computing is no longer sufficient to support the diverse needs of today's intelligent society for data processing, so edge computing technologies have emerged. It is a new computing paradigm for performing calculations at the edge of the network. Unlike cloud computing, it emphasizes closer to the user and closer to the source of the data. At the edge of the network, it is lightweight for local, small-scale data storage and processing. This article mainly reviews the related research and results of edge computing. First, it summarizes the concept of edge computing and compares it with cloud computing. Then summarize the architecture of edge computing, keyword technology, security and privacy protection, and finally summarize the applications of edge computing.

Abstract:The development of cloud computing delivery models inspires the emergence of cloud-native computing. Cloud-native computing, as the most influential development principle for web applications, has already attracted increasingly more attention in both industry and academia. Despite the momentum in the cloud-native industrial community, a clear research roadmap on this topic is still missing. As a contribution to this knowledge, this article surveys key issues during the life cycle of cloud-native applications, from the perspective of services. Specifically, we elaborate on the research domains by decoupling the life cycle of cloud-native applications into four states: building, orchestration, operation, and maintenance. We also discuss the fundamental necessities and summarize the key performance metrics that play critical roles during the development and management of cloud-native applications. We highlight the key implications and limitations of existing works in each state. The challenges, future directions, and research opportunities are also discussed.

Abstract:As the computing paradigm shifts from cloud computing to end-edge-cloud computing, it also supports artificial intelligence evolving from a centralized manner to a distributed one. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on the distributed artificial intelligence (DAI) empowered by end-edge-cloud computing (EECC), where the heterogeneous capabilities of on-device computing, edge computing, and cloud computing are orchestrated to satisfy the diverse requirements raised by resource-intensive and distributed AI computation. Particularly, we first introduce several mainstream computing paradigms and the benefits of the EECC paradigm in supporting distributed AI, as well as the fundamental technologies for distributed AI. We then derive a holistic taxonomy for the state-of-the-art optimization technologies that are empowered by EECC to boost distributed training and inference, respectively. After that, we point out security and privacy threats in DAI-EECC architecture and review the benefits and shortcomings of each enabling defense technology in accordance with the threats. Finally, we present some promising applications enabled by DAI-EECC and highlight several research challenges and open issues toward immersive performance acquisition.

Cloud computing is a computing style that provide power referenced with IT as a service. Users can enjoy the service even he knows nothing about the technology of cloud computing and the professional knowledge in this field and the power to control it.
Optimally organizing distributed-component computing in the clouds: From both the user perspective and resource view

Abstract:With the sharp increase of computing demands, computations more and more rely on the distributed components. However, the relatively inferior quality of wide-area networks hampers such trend. This paper proposes an approach aiming at optimally organizing the distributed-component computing in the current Internet in which some nodes with large computational freedom and capability for the public to compute are emerging, such as the initially born data centers in the present Cloud computing environments. Both the user experience and the resource utilization are taken into the quantitative analysis and optimization. Facing the exponential growth of the problem's solution space, this paper develops an effective approach. Experimental simulations show that the approach generates the result significantly approximating the optimal solution, in the meantime with high efficiency.

Abstract:In recent years, the fast development of mobile communications and cloud systems has substantially promoted edge computing. By pushing server resources to the edge, mobile service providers can deliver their content and services with enhanced performance, and mobile-network carriers can alleviate congestion in the core networks. Although edge computing has been attracting much interest, most current research is application-specific, and analysis is lacking from a business perspective of edge cloud providers (ECPs) that provide general-purpose edge cloud services to mobile service providers and users. In this article, we present a vision of general-purpose edge computing realized by multiple interconnected edge clouds, analyzing the business model from the viewpoint of ECPs and identifying the main issues to address to maximize benefits for ECPs. Specifically, we formalize the long-term revenue of ECPs as a function of server-resource allocation and public data-placement decisions subject to the amount of physical resources and inter-cloud data-transportation cost constraints. To optimize the long-term objective, we propose an online framework that integrates the drift-plus-penalty and primal-dual methods. With theoretical analysis and simulations, we show that the proposed method approximates the optimal solution in a challenging environment without having future knowledge of the system.
