Abstract:The imperfections of a receiver's detector affect the performance of two-way continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocols and are difficult to adjust in practical situations. We propose a method to improve the performance of two-way continuous-variable quantum key distribution by adding a parameter-adjustable optical amplifier at the receiver. A security analysis is derived against a two-mode collective entangling cloner attack. Our simulations show that the proposed method can improve the performance of protocols as long as the inherent noise of the amplifier is lower than a critical value, defined as the tolerable amplifier noise. Furthermore, the optimal performance can approach the scenario where a perfect detector is used.

Abstract:We propose a continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI QKD) protocol, in which detection is conducted by an untrusted third party. Our protocol can defend all detector side channels, which seriously threaten the security of a practical CV QKD system. Its security analysis against arbitrary collective attacks is derived based on the fact that the entanglement-based scheme of CV-MDI QKD is equivalent to the conventional CV QKD with coherent states and heterodyne detection. We find that the maximal total transmission distance is achieved by setting the untrusted third party close to one of the legitimate users. Furthermore, an alternate detection scheme, a special application of CV-MDI QKD, is proposed to enhance the security of the standard CV QKD system.

Abstract:A unidimensional continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocol with untrusted detection is proposed, where the two legitimate partners send unidimensional modulated or Gaussian-modulated coherent states to an untrusted third party, i.e., Charlie, to realize the measurement. Compared with the Gaussian-modulated coherent-state protocols, the unidimensional modulated protocols take the advantage of easy modulation, low cost, and only a small number of random numbers required. Security analysis shows that the proposed protocol cannot just defend all detectors side channels, but also achieve great performance under certain conditions. Specifically, three cases are discussed in detail, including using unidimensional modulated coherent states in Alice’s side, in Bob’s side, and in both sides under realistic conditions, respectively. Under the three conditions, we derive the expressions of the secret key rate and give the optimal gain parameters. It is found that the optimal performance of the protocol is achieved by using unidimensional modulated coherent states in both Alice’s and Bob’s side. The resulting protocol shows the potential for long-distance secure communication using the unidimensional quantum key distribution protocol with simple modulation method and untrusted detection under realistic conditions.

Abstract:<p>Aiming at the problems of low secret key rate, short transmission distance and low detection efficiency of continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocol, we propose a measurement-device-independent continuous-variable quantum key distribution(MDI-CVQKD) protocol based on photon subtraction and noiseless linear amplifiers (NLA). The protocol uses non-Gaussian operation, in particular, photon subtraction to improve the entanglement between quantum states, and NLA is used to amplify quantum states to compensate for channel attenuation. In this paper, the principle of the protocol is analyzed theoretically, and the relationship between the secret key rate and the secure transmission distance is derived through the covariance matrix between quantum states. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol can not only improve the entanglement between quantum states, but also extend the transmission distance of key distribution and improve the performance of key distribution system.</p>

Abstract:Generally, continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) schemes need random basischoice operations with homodyne detector to measure one of two quadratures, i.e., position and momentum quadratures. However, we find that the basis-choice oprations may become imperfect in practical applications due to the imperfections of the digital to analog convertor and the phase modulator. This imperfection will decrease the lower bound of secret key rate and leave security loopholes when the legitimate communicators do not aware the imperfection. Here we analyze the security of CVQKD system induced by the imperfection of the basis-choice operations and suggest possible countermeasures.

Abstract:In a practical quantum-key-distribution system, photon source and small operational errors cause intensity fluctuations inevitably, which cannot be ignored for a precise estimation on the single-photon fraction. In this paper, we demonstrated an efficient three-intensity decoy method scheme on top of the one-way Faraday-Michelson Interferometric system, combining an active monitoring with existing commercial apparatus to inspect fluctuations instantly. With this faithful detection for the upper bound of the fluctuation, the secure quantum key distribution is unconditionally realized with whatever type of intensity errors, which declares the utility and potential of decoy theory and active monitoring for quantum key distribution in practical use.

Here we propose a continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum secret sharing protocol to remove the attacks carried out on imperfect detectors. We analyze the performance of the proposed protocol under different conditions, and show that it can be extendable to a large number of participants, which is of great help to its practical implementation.

Abstract:The decoy-state method has been developed rapidly in quantum key distribution (QKD) since it is immune to photon-number splitting attacks. We examine two-basis-detector-efficiency asymmetry, which exists in realistic scenarios. By using the recent 4-intensity decoy-state optimization protocol, we report an implementation of high-rate QKD with asymmetric basis-detector efficiency, demonstrating a 1.9 to 33.2 times higher key rate than previous protocols in the situation of large basis-detector-efficiency asymmetry. The results ruled out an implicit assumption in QKD that the efficiency of Z basis and X basis are restricted to be the same. This work paves the way towards a morepractical QKD setting.

Abstract:To improve the performance of a quantum-key-distribution (QKD) system, high speed, low dark count single photon detectors (or low-noise homodyne detectors) are required. However, in practice, a fast detector is usually noisy. Here, we propose a dual-detector method to improve the performance of a practical QKD system with realistic detectors: the legitimate receiver randomly uses either a fast (but noisy) detector or a quiet (but slow) detector to measure the incoming quantum signals. The measurement results from the quiet detector can be used to bound the eavesdropper's information, while the measurement results from the fast detector are used to generate a secure key. We apply this idea to various QKD protocols. Simulation results demonstrate significant improvements of the secure key rate in the lower loss regime in both Bennett-Brassard 1984 (BB84) protocol with ideal single photon source and Gaussian-modulated coherent states protocol; while for decoy-state BB84 protocol with weak coherent source, the improvement is moderate. We also discuss various practical issues in implementing the dual-detector scheme.

Abstract:The performance of a practical quantum key distribution (QKD) system is often limited by the multi-photon state emission of its source and the dark counts of its detectors. Here, we present two methods to improve its performance. The first method is decoy state QKD: the sender randomly sends out weak coherent states with various average photon numbers (which are named as signal state and decoy states). In [14,15], we have performed the first experimental implementation of decoy state QKD over 15km and 60km respectively, thus dramatically increasing the distance and secure key generation rate of practical QKD systems. Our work has been followed up by many research groups worldwide [16-18]. The second scheme is QKD with "dual detectors" [19]: the legitimate receiver randomly uses either a fast (but noisy) detector or a quiet (but slow) detector to measure the incoming quantum signals. The measurement results from the quiet detector can be used to upper bound the eavesdropper's information, while the measurement results from the fast detector are used to generate a secure key. We applied this idea to various QKD protocols. Abstract:Continuous variable quantum key distribution attracts increasing attention in recent years due to its potential high secret key rates and the compatibility with existing communication infrastructure. This letter derives the secret key rate for a binary modulated continuous variable quantum key distribution using an optimally displaced threshold detection and post-selection. To improve the secret key rate, we optimize the post selected area and the coherent amplitude for different transmission efficiency of the channel under different thermal noises. Both the individual and collective beamsplitter attacks are considered. Numerical results show that the secret key rate using the optimally displaced threshold detection can surpass that using the classical detection scheme under different transmission efficiencies and different thermal noises. Besides, more improvement on the secret key rate can be obtained when the transmission efficiency is low.
Pilot-reference-free continuous-variable quantum key distribution with efficient decoy-state analysis

Abstract:Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV QKD) using optical coherent detectors is practically favorable due to its low implementation cost, flexibility of wavelength division multiplexing, and compatibility with standard coherent communication technologies. However, the security analysis and parameter estimation of CV QKD are complicated due to the infinite-dimensional latent Hilbert space. Also, the transmission of strong reference pulses undermines the security and complicates the experiments. In this work, we tackle these two problems by presenting a time-bin-encoding CV protocol with a simple phase-error-based security analysis valid under general coherent attacks. With the key encoded into the relative intensity between two optical modes, the need for global references is removed. Furthermore, phase randomization can be introduced to decouple the security analysis of different photon-number components. We can hence tag the photon number for each round, effectively estimate the associated privacy using a carefully designed coherent-detection method, and independently extract encryption keys from each component. Simulations manifest that the protocol using multi-photon components increases the key rate by two orders of magnitude compared to the one using only the single-photon component. Meanwhile, the protocol with four-intensity decoy analysis is sufficient to yield tight parameter estimation with a short-distance key-rate performance comparable to the best Bennett-Brassard-1984 implementation.

Abstract:The state preparation operation of continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI-QKD) protocol may become imperfect in practical applications. We address the security of the CV-MDI-QKD protocol based on imperfect preparation of the coherent state under realistic conditions of lossy and noisy quantum channel. Specifically, we assume that the imperfection of Alice's and Bob's practical state preparations equal to the amplification of ideal modulators and lasers at both Alice's and Bob's sides by untrusted third-parties Fred and Gray employing phase-insensitive amplifiers (PIAs), respectively. The equivalent excess noise introduced by the imperfect state preparation is comprehensively and quantitatively calculated by adopting the gains of PIAs. Security analysis shows that CV-MDI-QKD is quite sensitive to the imperfection of practical state preparation, which inevitably deteriorates the performance and security of CV-MDI-QKD system. Moreover, a lower bound of the secret key rate is derived under arbitrary collective attacks, and the upper threshold of this imperfection tolerated by the system is obtained in the form of the specific gains of PIAs. In addition, the methods presented will improve and perfect the practical security of CV-MDI-QKD protocol.

Abstract:Continuous-variable (CV) measurement-device-independent (MDI) quantum key distribution (QKD) is immune to imperfect detection devices, which can eliminate all kinds of attacks on practical detectors. Here we first propose a CV-MDI QKD scheme using unidimensional modulation (UD) in general phase-sensitive channels. The UD CV-MDI QKD protocol is implemented with the Gaussian modulation of a single quadrature of the coherent states prepared by two legitimate senders, aiming to simplify the implementation compared with the standard, symmetrically Gaussian-modulated CV-MDI QKD protocol. Our scheme reduces the complexity of the system since it ignores the requirement in one of the quadrature modulations as well as the corresponding parameter estimations. The security of our proposed scheme is analyzed against collective attacks, and the finite-size analysis under realistic conditions is taken into account. UD CV-MDI QKD shows a comparable performance to that of its symmetric counterpart, which will facilitate the simplification and practical implementation of the CV-MDI QKD protocols.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) can guarantee the security of key distribution through the basic principles of quantum mechanics. The theoretical security proof framework of continuous-variable QKD (CV-QKD) using two quadrature components to carry encryption key information has also been gradually completed. However, there are still deviations between theoretical assumption and experimental implementation that caused by the imperfection of the practical devices. Aiming at the responsivity of the detection imbalance and angular deviation of the dual homodyne detectors, we propose a pre-calibration and compensation scheme to eliminate the deviation of quadrature components. Specifically, the cross-correlation between the transmitted and received data is calculated, which is used to derive the transmission matrix. According to this transmission matrix, the data can be compensated during the actual CV-QKD. We simulate our scheme under different detector noises, responsivity imbalance, and angular deviation of the dual homodyne detectors. The results show that the scheme can accurately compensate the data, keep the excess noise below the security threshold, and generate the secure key even using imperfect devices. At the same time, the experiment also shows that this scheme can recover the quantum signal well and reduce the excess noise effectively. Considering that this scheme can solve the imperfect but common device problems, it makes a crucial step toward the new generation of practical CV-QKD systems based on signal processing.

Abstract:We propose a method to improve the performance of two-way continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocol by virtual photon subtraction. The virtual photon subtraction implemented via non-Gaussian post-selection not only enhances the entanglement of two-mode squeezed vacuum state but also has advantages in simplifying physical operation and promoting efficiency. In two-way protocol, virtual photon subtraction could be applied on two sources independently. Numerical simulations show that the optimal performance of renovated two-way protocol is obtained with photon subtraction only used by Alice. The transmission distance and tolerable excess noise are improved by using the virtual photon subtraction with appropriate parameters. Moreover, the tolerable excess noise maintains a high value with the increase in distance so that the robustness of two-way continuous-variable quantum key distribution system is significantly improved, especially at long transmission distance.

Abstract:The optical phase shifter that constantly rotates the local oscillator phase is a necessity in continuous-variable quantum key distribution systems with heterodyne detection. In previous experimental implementations, the optical phase shifter is generally regarded as an ideal passive optical device that perfectly rotates the phase of the electromagnetic wave of 90 degrees. However, the optical phase shifter in practice introduces imperfections, mainly the measurement angular error, which inevitably deteriorates the security of the practical systems. Here, we will give a concrete interpretation of measurement angular error in practical systems and the corresponding entanglement-based description. Subsequently, from the parameter estimation, we deduce the overestimated excess noise and the underestimated transmittance, which lead to a reduction in the final secret key rate. Simultaneously, we propose an estimation method of the measurement angular error. Next, the practical security analysis is provided in detail, and the effect of the measurement angular error and its corresponding compensation scheme are demonstrated. We conclude that measurement angular error severely degrades the security, but the proposed calibration and compensation method can significantly help improve the performance of the practical CV-QKD systems. Abstract:We present a discretely modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution system in free space by using strong coherent states. The amplitude noise in the laser source is suppressed to the shot-noise limit by using a mode cleaner combined with a frequency shift technique. Also, it is proven that the phase noise in the source has no impact on the final secret key rate. In order to increase the encoding rate, we use broadband homodyne detectors and the no-switching protocol. In a realistic model, we establish a secret key rate of 46.8 kbits/s against collective attacks at an encoding rate of 10MHz for a 90% channel loss when the modulation variance is optimal.
