Abstract:Device-free passive localization (DFPL) has been an emerging application with fast increasing development. Channel State Information- (CSI-) based DFPL is recently paid more attention to for fine-granularity and stability of CSI. However, lots of dead spots exist in the area of interest. And the accuracy of localization is not still completely satisfactory, especially for outside of the first Fresnel zone. In our paper, we put forward a new metric to estimate the sensitivity of a receiver to changes in the detecting area. In our experiment, we observe that the performance of DFPL can be raised when the receiver is placed at the location with high receiver sensitivity. Hence, we develop a new high-performance indoor device-free passive localization (HiDFPL), which employs a Bayesian a posteriori approach and possesses high receiver sensitivity. The experiment results demonstrate the outstanding performance of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:Passive localization methods based on Double-Correlation Function (DCF) can localize an unknown source by matching the signal-correlated structures extracted from correlation function of source signal received at two sensors, as the structures are dependent on the position of the source and the waveguide. It is similar to classical matched field processing, but differs in that data-based measured replicas are used instead of modeled replicas, and the signal-correlated structures are matched rather than acoustic field. This paper presents an extension of this method from time domain to frequency domain, by utilizing generalized cross-correlation spectral estimation methods to normalize the cross-correlation function. The analysis based on air experiment shows that the proposed algorithm has significant improvements against interference and on the estimation accuracy.

Abstract:As an emerging technique with promising application prospects, device-free localization (DFL) could estimate the location of target within the deployment area of wireless networks (WNs) while eliminating the need to equip the target with a wireless device. However, one major disadvantage of this technique is that it needs several wireless links travelling through the deployment area to guarantee good performance. To overcome this problem, a novel multidimensional wireless-link-information-based DFL scheme is proposed. Different from a traditional DFL scheme that scans wireless links sequentially with one frequency and one transmission power level, the proposed scheme makes full use of multiple frequencies and multiple transmission power levels to enrich the link measurement information. Meanwhile, motivated by the fact that the location information of the target is not only sparse but also changes slowly and continuously over time, we present a novel recursive compressive sensing algorithm to reconstruct the location information from undersampled measurements. The experimental results demonstrate the outstanding performance of the proposed scheme.
Probabilistic Fingerprinting Based Passive Device-Free Localization From Channel State Information

Abstract:Given the ubiquitous distribution of electronic devices equipped with a radio frequency (RF) interface, researchers have shown great interest in analyzing signal fluctuation on this interface for environmental perception. A popular example is the enabling of indoor localization with RF signals. As an alternative to active device-based positioning, device-free passive (DfP) indoor localization has the advantage that the sensed individuals do not require to carry RF sensors. We propose a probabilistic fingerprinting-based technique for DfP indoor localization. Our system adopts CSI readings derived from off-the-shelf WiFi 802.11n wireless cards which can provide fine-grained subchannel measurements in the context of MIMO-OFDM PHY layer parameters. This complex channel information enables accurate localization of non-equipped individuals. Our scheme further boosts the localization efficiency by using principal component analysis (PCA) to identify the most relevant feature vectors. The experimental results demonstrate that our system can achieve an accuracy of over 92% and an error distance smaller than 0.5m. We also investigate the effect of other parameters on the performance of our system, including packet transmission rate, the number of links as well as the number of principle components.
FitLoc: Fine-Grained and Low-Cost Device-Free Localization for Multiple Targets Over Various Areas

Abstract:Many emerging applications driven the fast development of the device-free localization DfL technique, which does not require the target to carry any wireless devices. Most current DfL approaches have two main drawbacks in practical applications. First, as the pre-calibrated received signal strength RSS in each location i.e., radio-map of a specific area cannot be directly applied to the new areas, the manual calibration for different areas will lead to a high human effort cost. Second, a large number of RSS are needed to accurately localize the targets, thus causes a high communication cost and the areas variety will further exacerbate this problem. This paper proposes FitLoc, a fine-grained and low cost DfL approach that can localize multiple targets over various areas, especially in the outdoor environment and similar furnitured indoor environment. FitLoc unifies the radio-map over various areas through a rigorously designed transfer scheme, thus greatly reduces the human effort cost. Furthermore, benefiting from the compressive sensing theory, FitLoc collects a few RSS and performs a fine-grained localization, thus reduces the communication cost. Theoretical analyses validate the effectivity of the problem formulation and the bound of localization error is provided. Extensive experimental results illustrate the effectiveness and robustness of FitLoc.
MFDL: A Multicarrier Fresnel Penetration Model based Device-Free Localization System leveraging Commodity Wi-Fi Cards

Abstract:Device-free localization plays an important role in many ubiquitous applications. Among the different technologies proposed, Wi-Fi based technology using commercial devices has attracted much attention due to its low cost, ease of deployment, and high potential for accurate localization. Existing solutions use either fingerprints that require labor-intensive radio-map survey and updates, or models constructed from empirical studies with dense deployment of Wi-Fi transceivers. In this work, we explore the Fresnel Zone Theory in physics and propose a generic Fresnel Penetration Model (FPM), which reveals the linear relationship between specific Fresnel zones and multicarrier Fresnel phase difference, along with the Fresnel phase offset caused by static multipath environments. We validate FPM in both outdoor and complex indoor environments. Furthermore, we design a multicarrier FPM based device-free localization system (MFDL), which overcomes a number of practical challenges, particularly the Fresnel phase difference estimation and phase offset calibration in multipath-rich indoor environments. Extensive experimental results show that compared with the state-of-the-art work (LiFS), our MFDL system achieves better localization accuracy with much fewer number of Wi-Fi transceivers. Specifically, using only three transceivers, the median localization error of MFDL is as low as 45cm in an outdoor environment of 36m^2, and 55cm in indoor settings of 25m^2. Increasing the number of transceivers to four allows us to achieve 75cm median localization error in a 72m^2 indoor area, compared with the 1.1m median localization error achieved by LiFS using 11 transceivers in a 70m^2 area.

Abstract:The measurement of received signal strength (RSS) and channel state information (CSI) has been widely used in the research of device-free localization (DFL). However, DFL systems based on these systems usually require labour-intensive training to understand the impact of the target on the surrounding wireless signals to build the target location-related model or image. In addition, the fact that the RSS is susceptible to multipath interference and is not directly accessible to CSI directly limits its actual deployment. In this paper, we explore the feasibility of DFL based on time-of-flight measurements of ultra-wideband signals, and propose a fusion method for simultaneous localization of multiple targets based on the evaluation results. Specifically, we mesh the feasible region of the target and utilize the geometric filtering method to re-evaluate the filtered wireless links in combination with the real-time adaptive relaxation target model. Consequently, we introduce the clustering method and combine the category matching strategy to ensure that the algorithm has robust real-time multi-target perception ability. Extensive experiments conducted in the lobby, laboratory and office scenarios demonstrate that the proposed method plays an active role in more than 82 and can control the mean error within $\text{0.6}~m$.

Abstract:Device-free passive (DfP) localization has been proposed as an emerging technique for localizing people, without requiring them to carry any devices. Potential applications include elder-care, security enforcement, building occupancy statistics, etc. We first present PC-DfP, an accurate and efficient RF-based device-free localization solution. PC-DfP adopts a stochastic fingerprinting approach to mitigate the error caused by the multipath and meanwhile minimize the system calibration overhead. Second, we present SCPL, a RF-based device-free people counting and localization technique. SCPL takes the calibration data collected with one person and the map information to accurately count people sequentially and localize them in parallel. Finally we present Crowd++, an unsupervised speaker counting technique through audio inference with smartphones to estimate the number of people in social hotspot places.

Abstract:The research on indoor localization has received great interest in recent years. This has been fueled by the ubiquitous distribution of electronic devices equipped with a radio frequency (RF) interface. Analyzing the signal fluctuation on the RF-interface can, for instance, solve the still open issue of ubiquitous reliable indoor localization and tracking. Device bound and device free approaches with remarkable accuracy have been reported recently. In this paper, we present an accurate device-free passive (DfP) indoor location tracking system that adopts channel state information (CSI) readings from off-the-shelf WiFi 802.11n wireless cards. The fine-grained subchannel measurements for multiple input multiple output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing PHY layer parameters are exploited to improve localization and tracking accuracy. To enable precise positioning in the presence of heavy multipath effects in cluttered indoor scenarios, we experimentally validate the unpredictability of CSI measurements and suggest a probabilistic fingerprint-based technique as an accurate solution. Our scheme further boosts the localization efficiency by using principal component analysis to filter the most relevant feature vectors. Furthermore, with Bayesian filtering, we continuously track the trajectory of a moving subject. We have evaluated the performance of our system in four indoor environments and compared it with state-of-the-art indoor localization schemes. Our experimental results demonstrate that this complex channel information enables more accurate localization of nonequipped individuals.
Towards robust device-free passive localization through automatic camera-assisted recalibration.

Abstract:ABSTRACTDevice-free passive localization (DfP) techniques can localize human subjects without wearing a radio tag. Being convenient and private, DfP can find many applications in ubiquitous/pervasive computing. Unfortunately, DfP techniques need frequent manual recalibration of the radio signal values, which can be cumbersome and costly. We present SenCam, a sensor-camera collaboration solution that conducts automatic recalibration by leveraging existing surveillance camera(s). When the camera detects a subject, it can periodically trigger recalibration and update the radio signal data accordingly. This technique requires camera access occasionally each month, minimizing computational costs and reducing privacy concerns when compared to localization techniques solely based on cameras. Through experiments in an open indoor space, we show that this scheme can retain good localization results while avoiding manual recalibration.

Abstract:With the rapid development of location-based IoT applications in recent years, indoor device-free passive localization based on Wi-Fi channel state information (CSI) has attracted considerable attention. In this article, we propose a long-term effective, robust, and accurate device-free passive fingerprinting localization scheme LTLoc, which only requires a single communication link. It takes the amplitudes extracted from the CSI along with the calibrated phases as fingerprints and trains a deep neural network (DNN) regression model to estimate the target location. Since Wi-Fi signals are susceptible to various environmental factors, CSI fingerprints also change over time, making the performance of the localization model built with the fingerprint database drop dramatically over a long period, and recalibrating the entire positioning area is laborious and time-consuming. To address this problem, we design an adaptive DNN (AdaptDNN) based on meta-networks by combining deep learning and domain adaptive methods. It can use meta-network learning to determine which layers and features of the DNN need to be transferred to automatically adapt to CSI fingerprints change. Extensive evaluations in an indoor environment with significantly different CSI fingerprints over six days have shown that LTLoc's effectiveness in coping with changing CSI fingerprints over a long period is significantly superior to existing work in terms of localization and adaptability.

Abstract:Device-free localization (DFL) enables several new applications in various sectors including smart cities, intelligent transportation, and public safety. DFL relies on a network of sensor radars that transmit, receive, and process reflected signals propagating in a monitored environment. The accuracy of DFL degrades in cluttered environments, due to the presence of undesired objects that reflect the signal. Indeed, the multiple reflections of the signal overlap at the receiver and make the inference of targets positions challenging. This article presents a theoretical foundation of DFL in cluttered environments by deriving the fundamental limits on DFL accuracy. In particular, we propose a system model that takes into account multiple reflections, nonline-of-sight conditions, and the presence of multiple targets. Building on such a model, we derive the Cramr-Rao bound on the inference accuracy of targets positions by applying equivalent Fisher information analysis. The proposed bound provides guidelines for the design and analysis of DFL systems operating in cluttered environments. Then, the article presents a case study compliant with the 5G New Radio numerology and channel modeling. Results show how the minimum achievable error is affected by multiple reflections and multiple targets and to which extent the employment of a signal with larger bandwidth and a network with a higher number of receivers can lower the achievable error toward submeter accuracy.

Abstract:Radio frequency based device-free passive (DfP) localization techniques have shown great potentials in localizing individual human subjects, without requiring them to carry any radio devices. In this study, we extend the DfP technique to count and localize multiple subjects in indoor environments. To address the impact of multipath on indoor radio signals, we adopt a fingerprinting based approach to infer subject locations from observed signal strengths through profiling the environment. When multiple subjects are present, our objective is to use the profiling data collected by a single subject to count and localize multiple subjects without any extra effort. In order to address the non-linearity of the impact of multiple subjects, we propose a successive cancellation based algorithm to iteratively determine the number of subjects. We model indoor human trajectories as a state transition process, exploit indoor human mobility constraints and integrate all information into a conditional random field (CRF) to simultaneously localize multiple subjects. As a result, we call the proposed algorithm SCPL sequential counting, parallel localizing.We test SCPL with two different indoor settings, one with size 150 m(2) and the other 400 m(2). In each setting, we have four different subjects, walking around in the deployed areas, sometimes with overlapping trajectories. Through extensive experimental results, we show that SCPL can count the present subjects with 86% counting percentage when their trajectories are not completely overlapping. Our localization algorithms are also highly accurate, with an average localization error distance of 1.3 m.

Abstract:The device-free localization (DFL) can locate the target without requiring the target to carry any radio equipment, which has a broad application prospect in the field of indoor positioning. Radio frequency identification (RFID), as a key technology for IoT implementation, has been widely used in objects identification and tracking. RFID-based radio tomographic imaging (RTI) method has received extensive attention due to its low cost, excellent real-time performance and easy to deployment. However, the indoor multipath effect, which leads to unpredictable variations of the received signal strength (RSS), especially in multi-target positioning. It is still a challenging problem to recognize the locations of multiple targets effectively in the complex indoor environment. In this paper, a novel method of intersection multidimensional feature analysis is proposed to solve this problem. The target impact region is introduced to extract the effective intersections, and then the multidimensional feature information is analyzed to determine the region where the real target may exist. The location estimation of the target is obtained by assigning appropriate weights to each intersection in the region. Extensive experiments are conducted with results are demonstrating that the method achieves high localization accuracy and localization stability in different indoor scenarios, while maintaining low computational complexity.

Abstract:Device-free localization (DFL) techniques based on pyroelectric infrared (PIR) sensors have attracted much attention due to their advantages of low cost, low power consumption, and privacy protection. However, existing PIR-based DFL methods still have a practical limitation that they usually require a high deployment density in multi-person scenarios. In this article, we propose a new PIR-based DFL method which requires a significantly lower deployment density in the multi-person scenario. The proposed method is based on deep learning. Especially, instead of directly utilizing the commonly used neural network architectures, we proposed a task-specific network architecture that integrates the domain knowledge of PIR sensors to improve its localization performance. Specifically, following the idea of modular learning, we design the proposed network architecture to contain two modules for counting the number of existing persons and another is for predicting their locations, respectively. Moreover, we also design the modules for person counting and localization to contain two secondary modules for different sub-tasks. Besides, to further improve the localization performance, we also propose two data augmentation strategies that aim at enhancing the training data diversity from the aspects of the moving speed of existing persons and the influence of surrounding noise. Through the proposed method, we succeed to remarkably reduce the deployment density of the traditional PIR-based methods by about 76%, while maintaining the localization accuracy.

Abstract:Indoor localization using Wi-Fi fingerprinting based on Received Signal Strength (RSS) has gained widespread attention due to its immunity to external factors and ability to penetrate obstacles. The localization process involves an offline phase for building a radio map and an online phase for matching location queries. Existing matching algorithms often prioritize enhancing online phase accuracy, overlooking the importance of offline data preprocessing, which can negatively impact overall performance. This study introduces a novel approach called Fingerprint Dictionary Preprocessing (FDP) that employs Convolutional Dictionary Learning (CDL) to process radio map data. CDL learns a set of kernels capturing site characteristics, representing RSS values from Access Points (APs) in a sparse manner. The proposed FDP system compresses data through feature learning, reducing storage requirements for data transmission. In the online phase, CDL is utilized for assisting matching fingerprints against the learned dictionary, accurately locating users. The contributions of the FDP system presenting a cost-effective and practical solution for indoor localization, addressing the challenges associated with large data collection and multi-dimensional data requirements, making it a promising approach for real-world applications. We conducted experiments in two real indoor environments, and the results indicated that the proposed FDP system, whether applied to the original radio map or the preprocessed fingerprint database, led to improved localization accuracy and reduced localization time.

Abstract:Device-free localization (DFL) based on the received signal strength (RSS) measurements of radio frequency (RF)links is the method using RSS variation due to the presence of the target to localize the target without attaching any device. The majority of DFL methods utilize the fact the link will experience great attenuation when obstructed. Thus that localization accuracy depends on the model which describes the relationship between RSS loss caused by obstruction and the position of the target. The existing models is too rough to explain some phenomenon observed in the experiment measurements. In this paper, we propose a new model based on diffraction theory in which the target is modeled as a cylinder instead of a point mass. The proposed model can will greatly fits the experiment measurements and well explain the cases like link crossing and walking along the link line. Because the measurement model is nonlinear, particle filtering tracing is used to recursively give the approximate Bayesian estimation of the position. The posterior Cramer-Rao lower bound (PCRLB) of proposed tracking method is also derived. The results of field experiments with 8 radio sensors and a monitored area of 3.5m 3.5m show that the tracking error of proposed model is improved by at least 36 percent in the single target case and 25 percent in the two targets case compared to other models.

DFF-Loc consists of four modules: a dynamic signal filter that uses the extended Kalman filter (KF), prepositioning using a lightweight backpropagation neural network (NN), outlier detection through the local outlier factor (LOF), and dynamic weighting fusion based on improved particle filter (IPF) using signal features. Field experiments are conducted with two of smartphones in three typical indoor scenarios to evaluate the performance of DFF-Loc. Compared with 5G-based and Wi-Fi-based methods, DFF-Loc exhibits an average accuracy improvement of 28.23% and 20.38%, respectively. DFF-Loc outperforms classical machine learning algorithms in all tests, with average accuracies of 1.87, 3.97, and 1.23 m. Dynamic experiments reveal the same. The cumulative error probability diagrams demonstrate DFF-Loc's excellent convergence ability, with the majority of points falling within acceptable error ranges. This solution can serve as a valuable reference for navigation with consumer-grade smartphones exploiting 5G NR SSB and Wi-Fi.
