Abstract:This research experimentally investigates the mechanical properties of aged unidirectional engineered bamboo (EB) laminate, pivotal in constructing glued laminated bamboo (glubam) structures. Investigations encompassed both outdoor exposure and artificial accelerated aging tests. In particular, outdoor exposure spanning three six-month intervals from July 2019 to December 2020. Complementarily, the Boil-Test (BT) method, as per the BS EN1087–1 standard, was employed for accelerated aging. The research examined tension, compression, bending, and shear mechanical characteristics of the aged bamboo samples. Notably, failure modes were predominantly influenced by fiber, matrix, and interfacial lamination layers. Findings revealed the superior anti-aging capacity of bamboo fibers compared with than that of bamboo matrix and lamination layer. Bamboo fibers maintaining over 75% of their original tensile strength. The BT accelerated aging method gave conservative estimations compared to outdoor exposure tests. Conclusively, the research yielded a novel tri-linear stress-strain model for analyzing the bending performance of glubam structures under varying aging conditions. This model incorporated strength reduction factors derived from the experimental data obtained from the corresponding compression and tension tests.

Abstract:This article presents experimental testing results designed to obtain physical and mechanical properties of glued laminated bamboo (glubam) beams. Two types of glubam beams made with different pre-processed plybamboo boards were tested. One type glubam beam specimens were made with thin layer bamboo strips of about 2 mm thick, and the other were manufactured with thick layer bamboo strips of about 5–6 mm. Test results of the full-scale beams show that the behavior of the glubam beams was elasto-brittle, similar to typical wood-based glulam. The different configurations of bamboo strips have certain influence on the flexural performance of glubam beams, and the mean ultimate capacity of the samples with bamboo strips flatwise is higher than that of edgewise. Based on the experimental results reported herein, the strength capacity equations are proposed for calculating the flexural rigidity and strength capacities of the glubam beams.

Abstract:This paper selected threaded rod as the shear connectors of glued bamboo beams.Single-sided shear tests on total 6 groups of shear-slip GluBam-Concrete composite specimens were performed.The major mechanical properties such as the load-slip curves,shear bearing capacity and anti-slip stiffness were measured and then evaluated.The test results indicate that the typical failure modes of composite blocks are the splitting of GluBam due to local compression caused by the connector,and obvious plastic deformation of rod occurs in the glued-in depth.The mechanical performance of the specimens is enhanced with the increasing diameter of dowel,while the improvement efficiency descends.The diameter of rod of 18 mm is a critical value for the shear-slip behavior,and it seems to be a reasonable choice.The quality grade of threaded rod has no substantive effect on the mechanical properties and composite action.Moreo-ver,the action of the waterproof layer at the interface is temporary,and it can be removed for improving the composite effect.

Abstract:Selecting composite connection is a crucial factor for researching mechanical performance of GluBam-concrete composite beam.An initial stage of research on the feasibility of a type of notched connection for GluBam-concrete composite beam was described.Total 15 groups of bond and anchorage pull-out tests and 3 groups of shear-slip tests were conducted respectively.The main mechanical properties such as anchoring capacity, load-slip curves and anti-slip stiffness were measured.The test results showed that liquid adhesive could penetrate GluBam easier and reach higher anchoring strength compared to paste adhesive.There was an optimum diameter for glued-in rebar according to the standardized anchorage strength, which almost did not fluctuate with anchorage depth.Setting inclination on the bearing surface of notched connector could not improve mechanical properties of this type of composite beams.But nailed to sides of GluBam beam prevented cracking of GluBam beam effectively and increased shear capacity significantly.Compared with GluLam-concrete composite beam with the similar notched connector, this type of new connector presents good mechanical performance while improved ductility.However only qualitative conclusions can be drawn at this stage, which needs to be investigated further.

Abstract:This study focuses on developing fully prefabricated glued laminated bamboo (glubam)-concrete composite (BCC) beams constructed of the innovative ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC)-steel composite connectors. Five mid-scale prefabricated BCC beams with different connectors and concrete slabs were tested under short-term loading conditions to evaluate the flexural behavior. Particular emphasis was placed on verifying the convenience and deconstructablity of the proposed assembly structure through a secondary assembly and loading process, revealing that the prefabricated BCC has the advantage of rapid assembly construction and appreciable reusability. This assembly structure exhibits favorable bending performance under short-term loading conditions and it shows partial composite action. Reducing spacing and enhancing shear resistance of the UHPC-steel composite connector effectively improves the flexural behavior of BCC beams. In addition, casting a layer of laminated lightweight aggregate concrete with 30 mm thick on site can enhance the bending performance of the prefabricated BCC beam with effective control of the increase in its self-weight. Typical load capacity models derived from timber-concrete composite (TCC) beam were evaluated by the test results for predicting the load capacity of the prefabricated BCC structure. A comparison and evaluation were conducted on six large-scale BCC beams connected by different connectors, indicating that the proposed fully prefabricated BCC system possesses superior competitive advantages compared with existing BCC/TCC beams and it has a good application prospect in building engineering.

Abstract:This paper reports tensile and compressive test results of bolted glubam (glued laminated bamboo) connections. The tensile tests were carried out with two types of specimens designed for tensile loadings in the longitudinal and transverse directions in relevance to the orientations of the bidirectional bamboo strips (fibers). In each direction, the specimens were further divided into nine groups according to different combination conditions of end and edge spacings. Compressive tests were executed for three groups of bolted glubam connections, with varying thickness of the main board and bolting conditions. The tensile experiments show that the failure of the specimens is strongly influenced by the loading directions. Recommended end distance and side distance are provided, whereas the load carrying capacity is analyzed. Based on the compressive testing results, failure modes and load displacement relationships are analyzed, in which the yield bearing capacity is shown to be close to that given by the equations in existing design specifications for timber structure.

Abstract:The flexural behavior of cross laminated bamboo and timber (CLBT) and cross laminated timber (CLT) beams are studied to explore the potential of using glued laminated bamboo (glubam) in CLT panels to obtain similar or even better mechanical performance and other constructional and environmental merits. The 4-point bending experiments were conducted for full-scale model CLBT and CLT beams, assisted with using deformation instrumentations including the digital image correlation method (DICM) and conventional methods (LVDT and strain gauges). All the experimental results show that the CLBT beams have the similar even better bending stiffness and capacity than corresponding CLT beams, and the advantage is more significant for beams under in-plane bending condition. Analytical models based on two-dimensional (2D) elasticity theory are also applied to predict the flexural response of CLBT beams. The accuracy of the proposed analytical models can be verified by comparing the results with experimental results. Some parametric studies for CLBT beams with different combination configurations of glubam and wood layers are also conducted to provide several design suggestions to achieve favorite flexural performance for this type of cross laminated bamboo and timber beams.

Abstract:Applying bamboo in construction is expected to reduce carbon footprint and promote environmental protection. Very limited information is available in the literature about the shear behavior of glued laminated bamboo (glubam, i.e., a type of engineered bamboo) beams. To this end, this paper presents an experimental investigation of shear behavior for full-scale glubam beams using three-point loading test. Fourteen specimens were tested, considering the effect of shear span-depth ratio (a/d) and beam depth on the shear response of glubam beams. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique was conducted to measure the strain fields on two specimens with different shear span-depth ratios. The test results show that the glubam beams with a/d= 1.0 occurred local compressive damage at the loading region and the mixed local compression-flexure damage; and beams with a/ d= 2.0 exhibited flexure-dominated damage together with a minor local compressive settlement at the loading region. Specifically, increasing the shear span-depth ratio reduces the load capacity but improves the ductility and minimizes the global damage in the glubam beam. Larger shear area of the beam has a smaller shear stress, which demonstates the scale effect on the shear behavior of the glubam beam. DIC technique is feasible for monitoring the shear behavior of glubam beams with a small shear span-depth ratio. Meanwhile, this technique can also be employed for the beams with a relatively large shear span-depth ratio to monitor the shear behavior at a relatively small deformation.

Abstract:This paper discussed the possibility of using glued laminated bamboo ( GluBam ) to replace timber in making the I?shape joists. The loading experiments of the fourteen GluBam I?shape joist specimens were carried out by using two?point loading method. The failure mode, mechanism and ultimate load carrying capacity were investigated. The testing results indicated that the GluBam I?shape joists behaved well and exhibited excellent mechanical properties. The strain measurements indicated that the plane assumption could be applied to the GluBam I?shape joists, and the stiffness could be calculated based on conventional beam theory. The ultimate strength of the GluBam I?shape joists could be calculated based on the theoretical equation of lateral torsional buckling.

Abstract:Glued-laminated bamboo (glubam) is a new type of structural material, which is developed as a potential alternative to the glued-laminated lumber or glulam. Similar to modern timber structures, connecting the glubam elements using steel joints requires a good understanding of the shear behavior of the material. In this study, glubam boards with three different bamboo strip (or fiber) configurations are manufactured and studied. Three types of glubam boards were manufactured and tested, including glubam with two bidirectional fiber arrangements at the ratios of 4:1 and 1:1, respectively, in the two orthogonal directions, and also the unidirectional fiber arrangement. The shear strengths in different loading conditions are experimentally investigated, following testing specifications for conventional wood. The study found that the in-plane shear strength values follow a normal distribution well, whereas the out-of-plane shear strength values can be statistically expressed by Weibull distribution. Based on the test results, the out-of-plane shear strengths and the in-plane shear strengths of glubam are studied, and the characteristic values and the design values are suggested. The relationship between the out-of-plane shear strength and the bidirectional ratio of bamboo strip (or fiber) has also been obtained with reasonably good correlation to the test results.

Abstract:A new type of rectangular glued laminated bamboo (glubam) beam had adopted in the world first truck-safe modern bamboo bridge in Leiyang, Hunan, by the authors. The glubam beams can further be enhanced by FRP. This paper analyzes the effect of some parameters, such as FRP thickness, span-depth ratio, strengthen measures, types of node on bending properties. The basic mechanical model is established to predict the failure. Through the experimental work, the flexural stiffness and ultimate load of FRP reinforced beams are compared with those of unreinforced beams. The result show that the analytical model can forecast the flexural behavior of FRP reinforced glubam beams well.

Abstract:This paper presents experimental and analytical studies on trusses made of glue-laminated bamboo or glubam, which is a new type of structural material unlike conventional steel or timber. Six full-scale model trusses with two types of configurations and sizes were tested to failure under gradually increased vertical load. The failure of the model trusses was caused by lateral buckling of the top compressive chords. Tests show that the model glubam trusses have adequate stiffness and strength. Analyses were also conducted to model the truss behavior with considering different joint conditions, such as pinned, rigid as well as semi-rigid joint using fictitious members. The analytical results for deformation at the design load level agree with the test results favorably well using all types of joint models. The semi-rigid joint model provides a slightly better prediction to the load carrying capacities of the model trusses. However, the analytical truss model based on pinned joints generally provides conservative prediction to load carrying capacities.

Abstract:Glued laminated bamboo (glubam) moment-resisting connections, in the forms of bamboo-steel-bamboo (BSB) and steel-bamboo-steel (SBS) connections, were studied in this research. The monotonic and cyclic loading experiments with two types of bamboo panels, unidirectional and multidirectional laminated bamboo, were performed. Test results demonstrated that the off-axis embedment behaviors of bamboo panels significantly influence the mechanical properties of glubam moment-resisting connections. The brittle splitting/shear failure modes can be avoided by using multidirectional laminated bamboo panels. The ultimate bearing strength of the multidirectional laminated bamboo connections was 2.5 times that of the unidirectional one. The application of multidirectional laminated bamboo rather than the unidirectional one in moment-resisting connections significantly improved the energy dissipated ability and ductility ratios from 1.5 to 1.9. Thus, the multidirectional panels were suggested to be used for the structural components with complex stress fields. Methods were also suggested to determine the test curves' initial stiffness and yield moment points. A simplified calculation method of moment-resisting capacities based on the European yield model (EYM), considering the off-axis embedment strength of glubam boards, was suggested for design purposes at the end of this research.

Abstract:Glued laminated bamboo (glubam) is an engineered bamboo for the potential usage in structures as an alternative to timber-based glulam. This paper focuses on the impact toughness and static bending strength of glubam, with the goal to provide basic understanding and experimental data for impact design of engineered bamboo structures. Two types of glubam, i.e., thin-strip and thick-strip glubams were investigated through impact pendulum and quasi-static bending tests. For the thick-strip glubam, testing parameters also included three types of manufacturing conditions with different degrees of carbonization of composing bamboo strips. Both comparisons among different types of glubam, and between dynamic and static bending results can effectively identify the impact resistance and mechanical properties of glubam. The dynamic impact loading resulted in higher instability and had failure modes different from quasi-static tests for glubam specimens. Experimental values of toughness, modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) at different loading speed conditions are obtained.

Abstract:Bamboo-concrete composite (BCC) beams are newly-innovated products used for floor system which synergistically utilizes bamboo and concrete components. These composite beams at cur-rent technology belong to the beam characterized with partial composite action due to the ex-istence of relative slip between bamboo segment and concrete slab. Existing investigations have demonstrated that the load bearing capacity of BCC beams depends on their bending stiffness; however, very limited prediction models are available to accurately estimate the bending stiffness of BCC beams. At present, the bending stiffness of BCC beams is predicted with the help of gamma-method in Eurocode 5-Part 1-1, and available studies have demonstrated that this method overestimates the bending stiffness of BCC beams. To this end, this paper presents a novel explicit model characterized with mechanism and data mining to predict the bending stiffness of BCC beams under short-term loads. Three steps were performed to achieve the aforementioned research objective. The first step was to introduce the axial force transfer coefficient into the equilibrium equations of internal force for bamboo segment and concrete slab. Secondly, the bending stiffness of BCC beams was established by taking into account the effect of relative slip with the help of existing experimental results from the interfacial shear test and flexural test. Finally, the proposed model was validated by comparing with flexural performance results of BCC beams collected from available literature as well as those obtained from gamma-method. The comparative results show that: i) the predicted bending stiffness of BCC beams is much closer to tested ones compared with gamma-method; ii) the errors of proposed model predicting the bending stiffness for most BCC beams are within 10% of test results; however, nearly half of the predicted ones using gamma-method have errors exceeding 10% of test results, both of which verify that the mechanism and data mining-dual driven model receives a better prediction for short-term bending stiffness of BCC beams.

Abstract:Three simply supported glue laminated bamboo (glubam), lengthened from bamboo veneer plate with glued and pressed techniques during the process of manufacture, under static experiments compare to three of fatigue experiments to analyze the fatigue damage on the stiffness and strength of bamboo elements followed by modal analysis in method of the integrated modal parameter estimator LMS PloyMax. The main outcomes of the experiments were: (1) fatigue experiment reduced the bearing capacity of glubam beams approximately by 10% due to the weakness of finger-joint and fatigued gluing; (2) when the upper value of cyclic load not surpassed its design value, there were no distinct reduction on the stiffness of specimens comparing to the static group that proved the applicability and validity of the fatigue design value; (3) Excellent flexibility of bamboo contributed to the fine stability of glubam beams in aspect of dynamic response during the fatigue loading. This paper provides an attempting experimental research as the fundamental work and reference for deeper results in the future.

Abstract:This study focused on developing novel connections with high shear stiffness and deformability for fully prefabricated glued laminated bamboo (glubam) and concrete composite (BCC) beams. Three types of reactive powder concrete (RPC)-steel composite connectors were designed and tested in the current investigation. Experimental results from the push-out tests on the proposed composite connectors with various configurations were presented, including the failure modes, shear force-slip responses, shear stiffness, capacity, and ductility. The results indicate that the RPC section can substantially improve the mechanical performance of the composite connectors. Moreover, a type of parametric model was also provided for predicting the shear stiffness and shear capacity of the proposed composite connectors based on the correlation analysis between the configuration parameter and the load bearing efficiency. Compared with the conventional cast-in-situ connectors, the experimental results validated that the easy assembly RPC-steel composite connectors have high shear stiffness and capacity as typical notched type connector as well as the excellent ductility of typical dowel type connector reported in previous studies. Feasibility evaluation revealed that the proposed composite connectors are suitable for a variety of fully prefabricated BCC structures.

Abstract:In today's trend of sustainable development, there is a renewed interest to use bamboo for modern building and bridge structures. However, traditional use of raw bamboo culms is not the only and nor the most effective application. The authors developed a laminated bamboo or glubam for general structural applications. This paper describes the manufacturing process of glubam, investigates and analyzes its energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission, and provides main mechanical properties through material testing. Analysis results and comparison with other comparable construction materials show the eco-friendly performance of glubam. The mechanical properties of glubam are promising for general use in construction. Research on connections using steel bolts shows the good connectivity of glubam components similar to timber structures. The paper also summarizes the authors' extensive experimental tests on various glubam components, such as full-scale girders under static and fatigue loads, wall panels under monotonic and cyclic loads, full-scale room models under simulated earthquake load and fire, etc. Several recent practical design and construction of residential and industrial buildings are also briefly introduced.
