Abstract:Applying stress to a ferroelastic material results in a nonlinear strain response as domains of different orientations mechanically switch. The ability to write, erase and move domain walls between such ferroelastic domains suggests a method for making nanoelectronics where the domain wall is the device. However, little is known about the magnetic properties of such domain walls. A fascinating model system is SrTiO 3 , where the ferroelastic domain walls display strain-tunable polarity and enhanced conductivity. Here, we reveal a long-range magnetic order with modulations along the ferroelastic domain walls in SrTiO 3 and SrTiO 3 -based heterointerfaces, which manifests itself as a striped pattern in scanning superconducting quantum interference device maps of the magnetic landscape. In conducting interfaces, the magnetism is coupled to itinerant electrons with clear signatures in magnetotransport measurements. The magnetic state is also coupled dynamically to the lattice and can be reversibly tuned by applying local external forces. This study raises the possibility of designing nanoscale devices based on domain walls where strain-tunable ferroelectric, ferroelastic and ferromagnetic orders may coexist.

Abstract:Two-dimensional CrI3 has attracted much attention as it is reported to be a ferromagnetic semiconductor with a Curie temperature of around 45 K. By performing first-principles calculations, we find that the magnetic ground state of CrI3 is variable under biaxial strain. Our theoretical investigations show that the ground state of monolayer CrI3 is ferromagnetic under compression, but becomes antiferromagnetic under tension. Particularly, the transition occurs under a feasible in-plane strain of around 1.8%. Accompanied by the transition of the magnetic ground state, CrI3 undergoes a transition from magnetic-metal to half-metal to half-semiconductor to spin-relevant semiconductor when the strain varies from similar to 15% to 10%. We attribute these transitions to the variation of the d-orbitals of Cr atoms and the p-orbitals of I atoms. Generally, we report a series of magnetic and electronic phase transitions in strained CrI3, which will help both theoretical and experimental researchers in further understanding the tunable electronic and magnetic properties of CrI3 and its analogs.

Abstract:The recent discovery of ferromagnetic single-layer CrI3 creates ample opportunities for studying the fundamental properties and the spintronic applications of atomically thin magnets. Through first-principles calculations and model Hamiltonian simulations, here we build for the first time a substantial magnetic phase diagram under lateral strain and charge doping, the two factors that are easily modulated in single-layer CrI3via substrate and gating controls. We demonstrate that both lateral strain and charge doping efficiently change the coupling between the local spins and thus have unexpected effects on the magnetic properties of CrI3. In particular, the strain tunes the magnetic order and anisotropy: a compressive strain leads to a phase transition from a ferromagnetic insulator to an antiferromagnetic insulator, while a tensile strain can flip the magnetic orientation from off-plane to in-plane. Furthermore, we find that the phase transition under compressive strain is insensitive to charge doping, whereas the phase transition under tensile strain is modulated by electron doping significantly. Our predicted magnetic phase diagram and rationalized analysis indicate the single-layer CrI3 to be an ideal system to harness both basic magnetic physics and building blocks for magnetoelastic applications.
Magnetic ground state and strain-mediated chiral-like atomic distortions behavior in two-dimensional rectangular spin lattice

Abstract:Due to the large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy originating from spin-orbit coupling, magnetoelastic coupling is generally reported in easy-plane magnets with rectangular lattice where the easy magnetization is coupled with the lattice direction, while the acquisition of a novel coupling, beyond the easy-plane ferromagnets, in two-dimensional (2D) materials remains unknown. Here, by employing the density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate this feasibility with the discovery of long-range ferromagnetic ordering and elastic strain-mediated chiral-like atomic distortions behavior in a newly tetragonal As-Fe-As trilayer (t-FeAs monolayer), which shows large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, robust ferromagnetic ordering, and in-plane ferroelasticity. We firstly point out that obvious limits exist when using the four magnetic configurations to determine the magnetic ground state for a rectangular spin lattice even if more exchange interaction parameters are included. A four-state mapping analysis is carefully examined for t-FeAs, where the calculated Curie temperature, Tc, is 435 K, which is higher than most reported 2D magnets, and can be further tuned by appropriate strains. Intriguingly, the chiral-like atomic distortion behavior of the Fe sub-layer is scanning tunneling microscopy characterizable, which can switch the magnetization axis between the out-of-plane and in-plane direction. This unusual finding of ferroelastic manipulation of both the atomic displacement and spin properties makes t-FeAs a promising candidate for future spintronics and also provides the possibility for exploring unprecedented coupling physics.

Abstract:The effect of non-equally biaxial in-plane misfit strains and demagnetization field on the magnetization states of ferromagnetic thin films is analytically investigated by using a nonlinear thermodynamic theory. The “misfit strain–misfit strain” phase diagrams of the magnetization states at room temperature for α-Fe and CoFe2O4 thin films epitaxially grown on tetragonal substrates are developed by minimizing the total free energy. For a cubic ferromagnetic thin film, an out-of-plane magnetization state exists in the region of tensile misfit strains if the magnetostrictive coefficient of λ100 is negative and the demagnetization field is small, whereas the out-of-plane magnetization vanishes in the whole region of misfit strains when the demagnetization field is large.

Abstract:The modulation of the magnetic state and spin orientation in two-dimensional (2D) intrinsic magnets is important for controlling the spin-dependent transport properties of 2D magnet-based heterostructures. In this work, using first-principles calculations, it is found that the Néel antiferromagnetic (AFM) state with in-plane spin and the ferromagnetic (FM) state with in-plane and out-of-plane spin can be achieved in monolayer CrI3 under appropriate in-plane strains. In particular, the conductance of the Graphite/monolayer-CrI3/Graphite van der Waals heterostructure increases with the increase in the tensile strain, and the rate of change in conductance reaches more than 1800% when the strain becomes larger than 20%, which is significantly larger than that of the van der Waals heterostructure with a nonmagnetic insulator as a barrier to the magnetic field. Interestingly, when the magnetic state in monolayer CrI3 is switched from the Néel AFM to FM state by strain, the anisotropy magnetoresistance (AMR) ratio of the Graphite/monolayer-CrI3/Graphite heterostructure changes from −34.8% to 70%. The changes of AMR and conductance with strain originate mainly from the variation of the bandgap of monolayer CrI3 and the average transmission channels of graphite. These findings enrich the method in tuning spin orientation and provide the route for controlling transport properties of the heterostructure by strain tuning spin orientation in 2D magnets.

Abstract:We systematically investigate the strain-engineered magnon states in two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic monolayers. By suitable engineering of an inhomogeneous strain, we demonstrate the emergence of magnon Landau levels and magnon snake states in 2D ferromagnetic monolayers. We show a magnon valley Hall effect and valley filter without relying on any external fields. Our proposal offers us another way to manipulate magnon valley transport and construct different types of flexible spintronic devices, and is experimentally feasible for 2D ferromagnetic materials by using state-of-art techniques.

Abstract:Recently, as a new representative of Heisenberg's two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic materials, 2D Cr2Ge2Te6(CGT), has attracted much attention due to its intrinsic ferromagnetism. Unfortunately, the Curie temperature (TC) of CGT monolayer is only 22 K, which greatly hampers the development of the applications based on the CGT materials. Herein, by means of density functional theory computations, we explored the electronic and magnetic properties of CGT monolayer under the applied strain. It is demonstrated that the band gap of CGT monolayer can be remarkably modulated by applying the tensile strain, which first increases and then decreases with the increase of tensile strain. In addition, the strain can increase the Curie temperature and magnetic moment, and thus largely enhance the ferromagnetism of CGT monolayer. Notably, the obvious enhancement ofTCby 191% can be achieved at 10% strain. These results demonstrate that strain engineering can not only tune the electronic properties, but also provide a promising avenue to improve the ferromagnetism of CGT monolayer. The remarkable electronic and magnetic response to biaxial strain can also facilitate the development of CGT-based spin devices.
Tunable Magnetic Coupling in Mn-doped Monolayer MoS2 under Lattice Strain.

Abstract:First-principles calculations are conducted to study the electronic and magnetic states of Mn-doped monolayer MoS2 under lattice strain. Mn-doped MoS2 exhibits half-metallic and ferromagnetic (FM) characteristics in which the majority spin channel exhibits metallic features but there is a bandgap in the minority spin channel. The FM state and the total magnetic moment of 1 µ B are always maintained for the larger supercells of monolayer MoS2 with only one doped Mn, no matter under tensile or compressive strain. Furthermore, the FM state will be enhanced by the tensile strain if two Mo atoms are substituted by Mn atoms in the monolayer MoS2. The magnetic moment increases up to 0.50 µ B per unit cell at a tensile strain of 7%. However, the Mn-doped MoS2 changes to metallic and antiferromagnetic under compressive strain. The spin polarization of Mn 3d orbitals disappears gradually with increasing compressive strain, and the superexchange interaction between Mn atoms increases gradually. The results suggest that the electronic and magnetic properties of Mn-doped monolayer MoS2 can be effectively modulated by strain engineering providing insight into application to electronic and spintronic devices.
Strain Engineering of Intrinsic Ferromagnetism in 2D van der Waals Materials

Abstract:Since the discovery of the low-temperature, long-range ferromagnetic order in monolayers Cr2Ge2Te6 and CrI3, many efforts have been made to achieve a room temperature (RT) ferromagnet. The outstanding deformation ability of two-dimensional (2D) materials provides an exciting way to mediate their intrinsic ferromagnetism (FM) with strain engineering. Here, we summarize the recent progress of strain engineering of intrinsic FM in 2D van der Waals materials. First, we introduce how to explain the strain-mediated intrinsic FM on Cr-based and Fe-based 2D van der Waals materials through ab initio Density functional theory (DFT), and how to calculate magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) and Curie temperature (TC) from the interlayer exchange coupling J. Subsequently, we focus on numerous attempts to apply strain to 2D materials in experiments, including wrinkle-induced strain, flexible substrate bending or stretching, lattice mismatch, electrostatic force and field-cooling. Last, we emphasize that this field is still in early stages, and there are many challenges that need to be overcome. More importantly, strengthening the guideline of strain-mediated FM in 2D van der Waals materials will promote the development of spintronics and straintronics.

Abstract:In this article, a systematic study on the magnetic properties and strain tunability of 3d transition metal ions (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) doped MoS2 using first-principles calculations is performed. Antiferromagnetic coupling is observed between Mn, Fe ions and the nearest neighbor Mo ions; whereas ferromagnetic coupling is observed in Co and Ni systems. It is also shown that by applying biaxial tensile strain, a significant change of the magnetic moment is observed in all transition metal doped MoS2 materials with a strain threshold. The changes of total magnetic moment have different mechanisms for different doping systems including an abrupt change of the bond lengths, charge transfer and strain induced structural anisotropy. These results demonstrate applying strain as a promising method for tuning the magnetic properties in transition metal ion doped monolayer MoS2.

Abstract:Addressing the need for modulated spin configurations is crucial, as they serve as the foundational building blocks for next-generation spintronics, particularly in atomically thin structures and at room temperature. In this work, we realize intrinsic ferromagnetism in monolayer flakes and tunable ferro-/antiferromagnetism in (Fe0.56Co0.44)(5)GeTe2 antiferromagnets. Remarkably, the ferromagnetic ordering (>= 1 L) and antiferromagnetic ordering (>= 4 L) remain discernible up to room temperature. The T-C (similar to 310 K) of the monolayer flakes sets a record high for known exfoliated monolayer van der Waals magnets. Within the framework of A-type antiferromagnetism, a notable odd-even layer-number effect at elevated temperatures (T = 150 K) is observed. Of particular interest is the strong ferromagnetic order in even-layer flakes at low temperatures. The intricate interplay among magnetic field strength, layer number, and temperature gives rise to a diverse array of phenomena, holding promise not only for new physics but also for practical applications.

Abstract:By performing first-principles calculations, we find that the predominant spin exchange of a hexagonal CoO2 layer is in proximity to the ferromagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic transition point. Its magnetic ground state can be easily altered by, e.g., substrate dielectricity and strain. In addition, the dopability of a stack of CoO2 layers is found to sensitively depend on the interlayer distance, which not only renders effective manipulation of the electronic property but also reveals an important intercalation effect in related bulk materials.
Magnetism and Spin Exchange Coupling in Strained Monolayer CrOCl

Abstract:The magnetism and spin exchange coupling of monolayer CrOCl with different strains are investigated systematically using first principles. It is found that the magnetic ground state can be changed from ferromagnetic (FM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM), and the Curie temperature (TC) is enhanced significantly by applying the uniaxial strain along a- or b-axis direction. The variations of spin exchange coupling are explained according to the Goodenough-Kanamori-Anderson (GKA) and Bethe-Slater Interaction (BSI) rules. The strain-dependent magnetic state is mainly attributed to the competition between direct exchange interactions of cation-cation and indirect superexchange ones of cation-anion-cation in monolayer CrOCl. The different competitions in a- and b-axis direction determine the different critical intervals R of magnetic transitions, where R is the distance of the two nearest-neighbor (NN) Cr3+ ions. The AFM-FM transition occurs at R/r3d = 2.9 and 3.75 in a-axis direction, while it happens at R/r3d = 2.65 along b-axis direction. These results indicate that the sensitive relevancy between the external strain and magnetic coupling makes monolayer CrOCl a promising candidate for spintronics.

Abstract:Previous studies have accurately determined the effect of transition metal point defects on the properties of bcc iron. The magnetic properties of transition metal monolayers on the iron surfaces have been studied equally intensively. In this work, we investigated the magnetic properties of the 3d, 4d, and 5d transition-metal (TM) atomic monolayers in Fe/TM/Fe sandwiches using the full-potential local-orbital (FPLO) scheme of density functional theory. We prepared models of Fe/TM/Fe structures using the supercell method. We selected the total thickness of our system so that the Fe atomic layers furthest from the TM layer exhibit bulk iron-bcc properties. Along the direction perpendicular to the TM layer, we observe oscillations of spin and charge density. For Pt and W we obtained the largest values of perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy and for Lu and Ir the largest values of in-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy. All TM layers, except Co and Ni, reduce the total spin magnetic moment in the generated models, which is in good agreement with the Slater-Pauling curve. Density of states calculations showed that for Ag, Pd, Ir, and Au monolayers, a distinct van Hove singularity associated with TM/Fe interface can be observed at the Fermi level.

Abstract:Exploring room-temperature intrinsic magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) materials for nanoscale spintronic devices has garnered significant interest. Achieving a high Curie temperature and substantial spin polarization in 2D ferromagnetic materials remains challenging. Drawing inspiration from the substantial enhancement of the Curie temperature observed in ferromagnetic CrIS monolayers by manipulating the covalent nature of Cr-S bonds, our study systematically delves into the electronic structure and magnetic properties of Janus M2X3Y3 (M = V, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co; X = Cl, Br, I; Y = S, Se, and Te) monolayers through first-principles calculations. Our findings reveal that 15 kinds of these monolayers exhibit dynamic and thermodynamic stability while displaying diverse electronic and ferromagnetic characteristics. Notably, Mn2I3S3 demonstrates half-metallicity and in-plane magnetic anisotropy, while Cr2I3Se3 exhibits a half-semiconductor and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Consequently, Mn2I3S3 transforms from in-plane to perpendicular magnetic anisotropy through strain manipulation. Cr2I3Se3, under strain, transforms from a half-semiconductor to a bipolar magnetic semiconductor. The strong coupling caused by the M-Y bonds makes them have a Curie temperature higher than room temperature. The unique magnetic properties exhibited by the 2D Janus Mn2I3S3 and Cr2I3Se3 magnets hold promise for applications in spintronics. Our study provides a foundational understanding for future experimental explorations in this exciting research area.
Modulating intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in Fe3GeTe2 monolayer via strain engineering

Abstract:The Fe3GeTe2 monolayer, a ferromagnetic topological candidate with a high Curie temperature of 130 K, has recently garnered considerable interest. We investigated the impact of strain on the electronic, magnetic, and topological properties of the Fe3GeTe2 monolayer using density functional theory calculations. Our results showed that the Fe3GeTe2 monolayer was an itinerant ferromagnet with a high spin polarization of 69.93% and out-of-plane easy magnetization. Tensile strain had no profound impact on the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC). However, when applying a compressive biaxial strain of −3%, the AHC at the Fermi level was dramatically enhanced to 1.62 e2/h, which is much larger than that of the bulk (0.7 e2/h) and bilayer (1.5 e2/h) material. The large AHC nearly coincided with the singularity of the energy bands near the M point. Our results highlight the potential of using strain engineering to control and optimize the properties of two-dimensional topological materials.
