Abstract:In this paper, a novel graphene oxide (GO) decorated nanoscale FeS composite (GO/FeS) combining both advantages of GO and FeS was synthesized and tested for the highly efficient scavenging of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. The as- synthesized materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in detail. The results indicated that FeS nanoparticles were effectively decorated onto the surface of GO through - OH, C-O, C=O, and O = C-O functional groups, resulting in larger specific surface area and higher reactivity The nanocomposites displayed an enhanced Cr(VI) scavenging capacity, and the acidic conditions favored the Cr(VI) scavenging by GO/FeS. The kinetics of Cr(VI) scavenging on GO/FeS nanoparticles was in accordance with the pseudo-second order kinetic model, suggesting that chemical interaction is mainly responsible for Cr(VI) scavenging on GO/FeS. Furthermore, the Langmuir model fit the best, and q(max), i.e. the maximum scavenging capacity of Cr(VI) obtained from the Langmuir model reached 138.5 mg/g, Surface sorption and reduction were the dominant scavenging mechanisms for Cr(VI) by GO/FeS. The present study demonstrated the promise of GO/FeS as an effective scavenger for the remediation of Cr(VI) in groundwater environment.
Enhanced adsorption of graphene oxide on iron surface induced by functional groups

Abstract:Recent experiments have shown that graphene (Gr) and graphene oxide (GO) as coatings can be adsorbed on steel to effectively protect the surface. In this study, the density functional theory calculations have been carried out to investigate the effect of functional groups (hydroxyl and epoxy groups) on the adsorption of GO on iron surface. Our results show that the increased functional groups make the adsorption of GO on iron surface more favorable, which originates from the enhancement of localized C-Fe bonds around the functional groups. Within the maximum coverage of functional group on GO studied in this work, the maximum binding energy between GO (the ratio of oxygen to carbon is 0.09) and the Fe(1 1 0) surface is more than twice that of Gr/Fe model, suggesting that the introduction of functional groups on graphene basal plane can significantly improve the interaction strength of GO with the Fe substrate. This work provides an atomic-level insight into the adsorption mechanism of graphene-based materials on steel.

Abstract:Abiotic transformation of graphene oxide (GO) in aquatic environments can markedly affect the fate, transport, and effects of GO. The authors observed that ferrous iron (Fe[II])an environmentally abundant, mild reductantcan significantly affect the physicochemical properties of GO (examined by treating aqueous GO suspensions with Fe2+ at room temperature, with doses of 0.032mM Fe(2+)permg/L, 0.08mM Fe(2+)permg/L, and 0.32mM Fe(2+)permg/L GO). Microscopy data showed stacking of GO nanosheets on Fe2+ treatment. Spectroscopy evidence (X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared transmission, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) showed significant changes in GO surface O-functionalities, in terms of loss of epoxy and carbonyl groups but increase of carboxyl group. The reduction mechanisms were verified by treating model organic molecules (styrene oxide, p-benzoquinone, and benzoic acid) resembling O-containing fragments of GO macromolecules with Fe2+. With sedimentation and adsorption experiments (using bisphenol A as a model contaminant), the authors demonstrated that Fe2+ reduced GOs still maintained relatively high colloidal stability, whereas their adsorption affinities were significantly enhanced. Thus, reduction of GO by mild reductants might be of greater environmental concerns than by stronger reducing agents (e.g., N2H4 and S2-), because the latter can result in too significant losses of surface O-functionalities and colloidal stability of GO. Abstract:The adsorption of several acidic gases (CO2, NO2 and SO2) on light metal (Li, Al) decorated graphene oxide (GO) is theoretically studied, based on the first-principles calculations. Configuration relaxation, binding energy and charge transfer are carried out to discuss the acidic gas adsorption ability of light metal decorated GO. It is found out that Li, Al could be anchored stably by hydroxyl and epoxy groups on GO, and then a strong adsorption of CO2, NO2 and SO2 will occur above these light metals. In contrast to Ti, Li decorated GO exhibits a comparable adsorption ability of acidic gases, but a much smaller interaction with O-2 about 2.85-3.98 eV lower in binding energy; and Al decorated GO displays much higher binding energy of all acidic gases with an enhancement of about 0.59-2.29 eV. The results of enhanced acidic gas adsorption ability and a reduced interference by O-2 imply that Li, Al decorated GO may be useful and promising for collection and filtration of exhaust gases.
Comparative Effects of Graphene and Graphene Oxide on Copper Toxicity to Daphnia Magna: Role of Surface Oxygenic Functional Groups

Abstract:Although the risk of graphene materials to aquatic organisms has drawn wide attention, the combined effects of graphene materials with other contaminants such as toxic metals, which may bring about more serious effects than graphene materials alone, have seldom been explored. Herein, the effects of graphene (GN) and graphene oxide (GO, an important oxidized derivative of graphene) on copper (Cu) toxicity to Daphnia magna were systematically investigated. The results indicated that GN remarkably increased the Cu accumulation in D. magna and enhanced the oxidative stress injury caused by Cu, whereas did not significantly alter D. magna acute mortality within the tested Cu concentrations (0-200 mu g L-1). On the contrary, GO significantly decreased the Cu accumulation in D. magna and alleviated the oxidative stress injury caused by Cu. Meanwhile, the presence of GO significantly reduced the mortality of D. magna when Cu concentration exceeded 50 mu g L-1. The different effects of GN and GO on Cu toxicity were possibly dependent on the action of surface oxygenic functional group. Because of the introduction of surface oxygenic functional groups, the adsorption ability to metal ions, stability in water and interaction mode with organisms of GO are quite different from that of GN, causing different effects on Cu toxicity. Abstract:Heavy metal contamination caused by industrial discharge is a challenging environmental issue. Herein, an efficient adsorbent based on few-layered magnetic graphene oxide (FLMGO) was fabricated, characterized, and utilized to remove aqueous Cd(II) and Cu(II). Results present that the two components graphene oxide (GO) and Fe3O4 of FLMGO promote mutually, enabling FLMGO to outperform either GO or Fe3O4. Specifically, FLMGO adsorbs Cd(II) and Cu(II) with adsorption quantities of 401.14 and 1114.22 mg·g–1 in 5 and 7 min, respectively. Moreover, FLMGO can be readily recovered via magnetic separation using a hand-held magnet. Adsorptions are spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy increasing, which are the best described by the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order model. The interaction mechanism is as follows: lone pair electrons in C═O- and C–O-related groups were coordinated toward Cd(II) and Cu(II) to induce chemical interaction. The high adsorption efficiency endows FLMGO with encouraging application potential in heavy metal remediation.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Nanostructured electronic devices, such as those based on graphene, are typically grown on top of the insulator SiO2. Their exposure to a flux of small size-selected silver nanoparticles has revealed remarkably selective adhesion: the graphene channel can be made fully metallized while the insulating substrate remains coverage-free. This conspicuous contrast derives from the low binding energy between the metal nanoparticles and a contaminant-free passivated silica surface. In addition to providing physical insight into nanoparticle adhesion, this effect may be of value in applications involving deposition of metallic layers on device working surfaces: it eliminates the need for masking the insulating region and the associated extensive and potentially deleterious pre- and postprocessing.

Abstract:The individual and competitive adsorption of Pb-II, Ni-II, and Sr-II on graphene oxides (GOs) was investigated by experimental and density functional theory (DFT) studies. Experimental results indicate that 1)in all the single, binary, and ternary metal-ion adsorption systems, the sequence of maximum adsorption capacities is Pb-II>Ni-II>Sr-II on GOs; 2)the desorption hysteresis of metal ions from GOs shows the adsorption affinity in the same sequence: Pb-II>Ni-II>Sr-II. For the first time, DFT calculations indicate that 1)Pb-II and Ni-II prefer to interact with the COH group, whereas Sr-II interacts with COH and COC comparably, and 2)Pb-II can easily abstract the OH group from the GOs to form the much more stable Pb(OH)-GO complex. These findings are very important and useful for understanding the mechanisms of heavy-metal-ion adsorption on GOs and assessing the adsorption of coexisting heavy-metal ions on GOs.
Cotransport Of Cu With Graphene Oxide In Saturated Porous Media With Varying Degrees Of Geochemical Heterogeneity

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) is likely to encounter heavy metals due to its widespread use and inevitable release into the subsurface environment, where the ubiquitous presence of iron oxides (e.g., hematite) would affect their interaction and transport. The present study aimed to investigate the cotransport of GO (20 mg L-1) and copper (0.05 mM CuCl2) in the presence of varying degrees of geochemical heterogeneity represented by iron oxide-coated sand fractions (omega = 0-0.45) in water-saturated columns under environmentally relevant physicochemical conditions (1 mM KCl at pH 5.0-9.0). The Langmuir-fitted maximum adsorption capacity of Cu2+ by GO reached 137.6 mg g(-1), and the presence of 0.05 mM Cu2+ decreased the colloidal stability and subsequent transport of GO in porous media. The iron oxide coating was found to significantly inhibit the transport of GO and Cu-loaded GO in sand-packed columns, which can be explained by the favorable deposition of the negatively charged GO onto patches of the positively charged iron oxide coatings at pH 5.0. Increasing the solution pH from 5.0 to 9.0 promoted the mobility of GO, with the exception of pH 7.5, in which the lowest breakthrough of GO was observed. This is possibly due to the fact that the surface charge of iron oxide approaches zero at pH 7.5, suggesting that new "favorable" sites are available for GO retention. This study deciphered the complicated interactions among engineered nanomaterials, heavy metals, and geochemical heterogeneity under environmentally relevant physicochemical conditions. Our results highlight the significant role of geochemical heterogeneity, such as iron oxide patches, in determining the fate and transport of GO and GO-heavy metal association in the subsurface environment.

Abstract:In this study, we utilize a series of molecular dynamics simulations to explore the effects of microstructures of H3O+ and Fe2+ ions on their transport and sieving behavior on a functionalized graphene surface. The functionalization of the surface is modified by varying the epoxy group (i.e., x epoxy = epoxy/(epoxy + hydroxyl)) from 0 to 60 %. Results demonstrate that significantly high ion density, relative to the bulk, occurs within the range from the solid surface to the first valley of Fe2+, which is defined as the transport region (0 to 6.7–10.3 Å). For x epoxy values in 0–20 and 40–60 %, the high number of hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) between interfacial groups (namely, hydroxyl and epoxy groups) and H3O+ results in a high H3O+ density in the interfacial contact layer, subsequently leading to a high Fe2+ density in the subcontact layer. Conversely, x epoxy value of 30 % results in a relatively high H3O+ density and the lowest Fe2+ density in the subcontact layer. A detailed examination of the hydration microstructure reveals that the larger effective hydration radius induces the higher diffusion coefficient of H3O+ and Fe2+, which occurs because the larger effective hydration radius, which corresponding to weaker hydration ability, allows the easier exchange of hydrated water in the second hydration shell with non-hydrated water, thereby increasing the ion diffusion coefficient. High H3O+ permeability is shown to arise from the combined effect of interfacial H-bond structures and the large effective hydration radius. Additionally, the H-bond structure and ionic hydration microstructure drive high selectivity due to the induced high-density and effective hydration ratios, respectively. Notably, a x epoxy value of 30 % offers relatively high H3O+permeability and the highest H3O+/Fe2+ selectivity, making it the optimal choice for separating H3O+ from Fe2+.

Abstract:Heavy metal-containing wastewater can be treated by adsorption technology to obtain ultra-low concentration or high-quality treated effluent. Due to the constraints of the specific surface area, surface electrical structure and spatial effect of conventional adsorbents, it is often difficult to obtain adsorbents within high adsorption capacity. Graphene has characteristics of large specific surface area, small particle size, and high adsorption efficiency. It is considered as one of the research hotspots in recent years. However, despite graphene’s unique properties, graphene-based adsorbents still have some drawbacks, i.e. graphene nanosheets are easier to be stacked with each other via π–π stacking and van der Waals interactions, which affect the site exposure, impede the rapid mass transport and limit its adsorption performance. Special strategy is needed to overcome its drawbacks. This work summarizes recent literatures on utilization of three strategies-surface functionalization regulation, morphology and structure control and material composite, to improve the adsorption properties of graphene-based adsorbent towards heavy metal removal. A brief summary, perspective on strategies to improving adsorption properties of graphene-based materials for heavy metal adsorption are also presented. Certainly, this review will be useful for designing and manufacturing of graphene-based nanomaterials for water treatment.
Few-layered Graphene Oxide Nanosheets As Superior Sorbents for Heavy Metal Ion Pollution Management.

Abstract:Graphene has attracted multidisciplinary study because of its unique physicochemical properties. Herein, few-layered graphene oxide nanosheets were synthesized from graphite using the modified Hummers method, and were used as sorbents for the removal of Cd(II) and Co(II) ions from large volumes of aqueous solutions. The effects of pH, ionic strength, and humic acid on Cd(II) and Co(II) sorption were investigated. The results indicated that Cd(II) and Co(II) sorption on graphene oxide nanosheets was strongly dependent on pH and weakly dependent on ionic strength. The abundant oxygen-containing functional groups on the surfaces of graphene oxide nanosheets played an important role on Cd(II) and Co(II) sorption. The presence of humic acid reduced Cd(II) and Co(II) sorption on graphene oxide nanosheets at pH < 8. The maximum sorption capacities (C(smax)) of Cd(II) and Co(II) on graphene oxide nanosheets at pH 6.0 ± 0.1 and T = 303 K were about 106.3 and 68.2 mg/g, respectively, higher than any currently reported. The thermodynamic parameters calculated from temperature-dependent sorption isotherms suggested that Cd(II) and Co(II) sorptions on graphene oxide nanosheets were endothermic and spontaneous processes. The graphene oxide nanosheets may be suitable materials in heavy metal ion pollution cleanup if they are synthesized in large scale and at low price in near future.

Abstract:Water pollution regarding dyes and heavy metal ions is crucial facing the world. How to effectively separate these contaminants from water has been a key issue. Graphene oxide (GO) promises the green-water world as a long-lasting spotlight adsorbent material and therefore, harnessing GO has been the research hotspot for over a decade. The state of GO as well as its surface functional groups plays an important role in adsorption. And the way of preparation and structural modification matters to the performance of GO. In this review, the significance of the state of existence of stock GO and surface functional groups is explored in terms of preparation, structural modification, and adsorption. Besides, various adsorbates for GO adsorption are also involved, the discussion of which is rarely established elsewhere.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have been widely used as fluorescence probes to detect metal ions with satisfactory selectivity. However, the diverse chemical structures of GQDs lead to selectivity for multiple metal ions, and this can lead to trouble in the interpretation of selectivity due to the lack of an in depth and systematic analysis. Herein, bare GQDs were synthesized by oxidizing carbon black with nitric acid and used as fluorescent probes to detect metal ions. We found that the specific ability of GQDs to recognize ferric ions relates to the acidity of the medium. Specifically, we demonstrated that the coordination between GQDs and Fe3+ is regulated by the pH of the aqueous GQDs solution. Dissociative Fe3+ can coordinate with the hydroxyl groups on the surface of the GQDs to form aggregates (such as iron hydroxide), which induces fluorescence quenching. A satisfactory selectivity for Fe3+ ions was achieved under relatively acidic conditions; this is because of the extremely small Ksp of ferric hydroxide compared to those of other common metal hydroxides. To directly survey the key parameter for Fe3+ ion specificity, we performed the detection experiment in an environment free of interference from the buffer solution, noninherent groups, and other complex factors. This study will help researchers understand the selectivity mechanisms of GQDs as fluorescence probes for metal ions, which could guide the design of other GQD-based sensor platforms.
Co-transport of Graphene Oxide and Heavy Metal Ions in Surface-Modified Porous Media.

Abstract:The ability to predict the transport of heavy metal ions in porous media with different surface characteristics is crucial to protect groundwater quality and public health. In this study, the effects of graphene oxide (GO) on co-transport and remobilization of Pb2+ and Cd2+ in humic acid (HA), smectite, kaolinite, and ferrihydrite-coated sand media were evaluated via laboratory packed-column experiments. Scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray analysis showed that the surface morphology of the coated sands was quite different and that ∼56.7–89.9% of the surface was covered by the coating and the major elemental components were C, O, Si, Al, and Fe. GO exhibited high mobility in HA, kaolinite, and smectite-coated sand, but showed high retention in ferrihydrite-coated sand. While GO reduced the transport of Pb2+ and Cd2+, both metal ions also reduced the mobility of GO in coated-sand columns. Elution experiments revealed that GO led to the remobilization and release of the previously sorbed Pb2+ and Cd2+ from the coated sand. However, GO could not release Pb2+ and Cd2+ from smectite-coated sand columns, probably because smectite has stronger adsorption affinity to the heavy metals than GO. Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek calculations were employed and explained the GO transport behavior in the columns well. Furthermore, the advection-dispersion-reaction equation simulated the cotransport of Pb2+ and Cd2+ with GO in the coated sand well. These results are expected to provide insight into the potential impact of coexisting nanomaterials with contaminants in vulnerable soil and groundwater systems.

Abstract:In this work, we report the graphene-promoted formation of an interfacial oxide layer when certain metals are deposited on graphene. We probe interfacial oxide formation through the observation that several metals, when 10-12 nm in thickness and deposited on graphene on a transparent substrate, show a change in optical contrast compared to that in areas where the metal directly contacts the substrate. Aluminum shows this effect, while platinum and nickel do not exhibit such a pronounced optical contrast change. To understand this phenomenon, we characterize the Al-graphene, Ti-graphene, and Ni-graphene interfaces using techniques including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profiling, X-ray reflectivity, and Raman spectroscopy. These techniques show the presence of oxide at the buried metal-graphene interface for the cases of aluminum and titanium deposition, and we discuss how this explains the change in optical contrast. We show that this process is sensitive to the background vacuum level during deposition. In the case of nickel, we did not observe the presence of an oxide. Building upon these findings, we propose structures for Al-graphene, Ti-graphene, and Ni-graphene interfaces. We propose a model based on the metal work function and interaction with graphene that can guide the metals for which interfacial oxidation is to be expected, and we discuss the role of the deposition conditions in controlling the extent of oxide formation. These observations provide important implications for various devices using graphene as either the channel or the contact. Depending on whether a metal-graphene interfacial oxide is desirable and its functionality, these findings will afford guidance for their fabrications in the future.
Effect of Sulfate on Cu(II) Adsorption/Desorption Behavior on Ferrihydrite Colloids and Cu Speciation

Abstract:Iron oxide colloids have great adsorption capacity ofheavy metalsdue to their high specific surface area. Inorganic oxyanion can causecolloid aggregation and further affect its reactivity and mobility.However, the effect of sulfate on the metal sequestration by ironoxide colloids is still unknown. In this study, using aggregation,batch adsorption/desorption, and settling experiments combined withXPS and TEM, we elucidated the sorption behavior of Cu(II) on ferrihydritecolloids and the Cu speciation change at various sulfate concentrations.Our results showed that the Cu(II) adsorption on ferrihydrite colloidswas improved by adding sulfate, but the enhancement extent obviouslydecreased at high sulfate concentrations because of the drastic diminishmentof available sites. Further desorption experiments indicated thatthe extent of Cu(II) desorption on ferrihydrite colloids was smallerthan that on ferrihydrite particles under the same conditions becauseof the physical constraints created by aggregation. Moreover, Cu speciation(dissolved, colloidal, and particulate) was controlled by sulfateconcentration, with no colloidal Cu found when the concentration exceededthe critical coagulation concentration (63 & mu;M). The study ofthe multiple interactions between ferrihydrite colloids, Cu(II), andsulfate provided the basis for a comprehensive understanding of thetransport and geochemical fate of heavy metals.
Transport of Graphene Oxide in Saturated Quartz Sand Containing Iron Oxides.

Abstract:The environmental implications of graphene oxide (GO) have received much attention. Transport of GO in subsurface environment is a critical process affecting the migration and potential risks of this important class of carbonaceous nanomaterials. To date, the effects of heterogeneity in porous media, in particular, iron oxides, on GO transport are not well studied. In this study, we investigated the transport properties of GO in saturate quartz sand as affected by the presence of iron oxides, using goethite, hematite and ferrihydrite as the model iron oxide species, and applied a two-site transport model (which accounts for both attachment and straining) to fit the transport data. We found that iron oxide coating on sand surfaces markedly inhibited GO transport, mainly due to increased electrostatic attraction between particles and collectors, as the positively charged iron oxides provided favorable deposition sites for the negatively charged GO nanosheets. Additionally, increased surface roughness was likely an additional mechanism leading to the enhanced GO deposition. The extent of transport inhibition by iron oxides also depended on the morphology iron oxides, in that at the same Fe loading a larger effect was observed when iron oxides existed as the coating on sand surface than as discreet particles. The presence of iron oxide coatings (tested using goethite) could magnify the effects of cations on GO transport. Specifically, the presence of goethite facilitated the accumulation of cations on the surface of sand, and in the case of Ca2+, the binding of GO via the cation-bridging mechanism was enhanced, as goethite contained abundant surface hydroxyl groups that are strong metal-complexing moieties.
