Abstract:An optical amplification-free deep reservoir computing (RC)-assisted high-baudrate intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) system is experimentally demonstrated using a 100G externally modulated laser operated in C-band. We transmit 112 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) and 100 Gbaud 6-level PAM (PAM6) signals over a 200-m single-mode fiber (SMF) link without any optical amplification. The decision feedback equalizer (DFE), shallow RC, and deep RC are adopted in the IM/DD system to mitigate impairment and improve transmission performance. Both PAM transmissions over a 200-m SMF with bit error rate (BER) performance below 6.25% overhead hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold are achieved. In addition, the BER of the PAM4 signal is below the KP4-FEC limit after 200-m SMF transmission enabled by the RC schemes. Thanks to the use of a multiple-layer structure, the number of weights in deep RC has been reduced by approximately 50% compared with the shallow RC, whereas the performance is comparable. We believe that the optical amplification-free deep RC-assisted high-baudrate link has a promising application in intra-data center communications.

Abstract:In this paper, dyadic probabilistic shaping (PS) for pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) has been investigated and experimentally demonstrated for intensity-modulation and direct-detection optical interconnection systems. Improved achievable information rate can be obtained under the condition of limited bandwidth and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Theoretical investigations of generalized mutual information have been performed. 0.61- and 1.74-dB SNR gains by dyadic PS can be obtained for PAM-4 and PAM-8, respectively, to achieve error free assuming optimal 20% FEC. Meanwhile, such fixed distributions can offer a considerably broad SNR range (10.3-16.7 dB for PAM-4 and 13.4-24.6 dB for PAM-8) with positive gain. Moreover, experimental investigations have been carried out over optical multimode fiber (MMF) links at 850 nm using a commercial-product-level vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) chip. PAM-8 signaling by PS at the net rate of 75 Gb/s has been realized with 100-m OM3 fiber transmission. Energy efficient signaling can be achieved with up to 46% theoretical power reduction by PS. Experimentally, we obtained 16% reduction of optical power for the VCSEL-MMF optical link. The dyadic distribution of PS, due to its simplicity of coding, as well as considerable shaping gain and energy efficiency, is expected to be an opportune solution for the cost-sensitive short-reach scenarios.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the transmission performance of the bit-loading discrete multi-tone (DMT) signal in intensity modulation and direct detection (IM-DD) system with a transmission distance of 2km and a net data rate of 108-Gb/s by two different shaping methods. A detailed comparison between the application of geometric shaping (GS) and probabilistic shaping (PS) in bit-loading DMT is presented. With continuous entropy loading for better channel fitting, probabilistically shaped bit-loading DMT achieves 1-dB receiver sensitivity gain compared to the conventional bit-loading DMT and outperforms geometrically shaped bit-loading DMT in the transmission experiment.

Abstract:The application of pairwise probabilistic shaping combined with geometric shaping is investigated for a pulse-amplitude-modulation-based intensity modulated and direct detection (IMDD) system. With probabilistically shaped signals, we experimentally demonstrate the flexible information rate beyond 100 Gb/s in a practical passive optical network (PON) link. Similar to the G.hsp 50 Gb/s PON standard, the PON link assumes the existence of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), which boosts the transmitter power to achieve a high link budget. While the optimal signal distributions for the IMDD link with a SOA tend to be unipolar distributions, we consider a practical methodology of accommodating forward error correction (FEC) parity bits using pairwise probabilistic distribution. Since pairwise signaling causes performance degradation when the optimal signal would be strongly shaped, we propose to combine geometric shaping (GS) with probabilistic shaping (PS) to overcome the shortcomings of the pairwise signaling. We present experimental demonstrations of the various achievable rate measurements using PS <math display="inline"> <mo>+</mo> </math> GS modulations with flexible FEC assumption. We also propose a novel descrambling-based decoding technique to evaluate the post-FEC performance based on transmission data that is agnostic of the FEC code. The post-FEC performances are then presented using a fixed and practical low-density parity check code.

Abstract:Probabilistic constellation shaping has been used in long-haul optically amplified coherent systems for its capability to approach the Shannon limit and realize fine rate granularity. The availability of high-bandwidth optical-electronic components and the previously mentioned advantages have invigorated researchers to explore probabilistic shaping (PS) in intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) systems. This article presents an extensive comparison of uniform 8-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) with PS PAM-8 using cap and cup Maxwell-Boltzmann (MB) distributions as well as MB distributions of different Gaussian orders. We report that in the presence of linear equalization, PS-PAM-8 outperforms uniform PAM-8 in terms of bit error ratio, achievable information rate and operational net bit rate indicating that cap-shaped PS-PAM-8 shows high tolerance against nonlinearities. In this paper, we have focused our investigations on O-band electro-absorption modulated laser unamplified IM/DD systems, which are operated close to the zero dispersion wavelength.

Abstract:With the requirement for large capacity communication systems, the technology to close the gap between the achievable information rate and the Shannon capacity limit attracts more and more attention. In this paper, we present a novel scheme of trellis coded modulation combined with probabilistic shaping (PS-TCM) in the intensity-modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) system, using generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM). The principle of PS-TCM is analyzed with mutual information. We experimentally demonstrate the proposed scheme in the optical GFDM system. The results show that 4 Gb/s PS-TCM-32QAM signal achieves ∼2dB gain over the regular 16QAM signal in the back to back case. After 20 km transmission, the scheme of PS-TCM-32QAM provides 1.8 dB performance gain over that of the regular 16QAM signal. The bandwidth effect of optical filter on the performance of PS-TCM-32QAM signal is analyzed. The proposed scheme has significant gain, flexible spectrum efficiency, and approached Shannon limit, which brings a better trade-off between effectiveness and reliability performance for the multi-carrier optical system.

Abstract:Weakly coupled mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) systems based on intensity modulation and direct detection (IM-DD) are a good candidate for further improving the capacity of short-reach optical interconnections. However, restrained by the modal crosstalk of the transmission link and the reception of degenerate mode groups (DMGs) utilizing bandwidth-limited multimode photodetectors (PDs), high-speed MDM IM-DD has encountered a capacity bottleneck. In this Letter, we investigate a high-speed weakly coupled MDM IM-DD transmission system utilizing a degenerate mode diversity receiver scheme adopting high-bandwidth single-mode PDs over a multiple-ring-core (MRC) few-mode fiber (FMF) and a low-crosstalk mode multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DMUX). An MDM IM-DD transmission with four DMGs and eight wavelengths is experimentally demonstrated with 112-GBaud four-level pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM4) and probabilistically shaped PAM8 per lane over 200-m weakly coupled MRC-FMF. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of the MDM IM-DD transmission system with up to 112-GBaud baud rate and beyond 6.4-Tb/s net rate. Meanwhile, the experimental results show that the proposed MDM IM-DD transmission link has a superior performance only adopting a low-complexity feedforward equalizer, making it a promising candidate for high-speed optical interconnections.

Abstract:The exponential growth in data-driven applications like artificial intelligence and metaverse poses an increasing demand for integrated optical interconnects with efficient and cost-effective high-capacity solutions. For short-reach optical interconnects dominated by intensity-modulated direct detection (IM-DD), high-speed and large-capacity transmission enabled by high-bandwidth electro-optic devices is always highly desired. In this article, based on a thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) modulator with a 3-dB bandwidth larger than 110 GHz fabricated by ourselves, we experimentally demonstrate ultrahigh-speed optical interconnects with probabilistic shaping pulse amplitude modulation (PS-PAM) signals. With linear pre-equalization and Volterra nonlinear equalizer (VNLE), a 120 Gbaud PS-PAM16 signal with a bit rate up to 408 Gb/s is generated. Compared to the regular-PAM8 signal with the same bit rate of 360Gb/s, the PS-PAM signal demonstrates a receiver sensitivity gain of 2.2 dB. With the help of VNLE, 384.5 Gb/s PS-PAM16 signal can be transmitted over 500 m standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) at the C band. The ultra-broadband TFLN enabled transmission provides a promising solution for future 400G per wavelength data-center interconnects.

Abstract:For 200Gb/s net rates, cap probabilistic shaped PAM-8 with different Gaussian orders are experimentally compared against uniform PAM-8. In back-to-back and 5km measurements, cap-shaped 85-GBd PAM-8 with Gaussian order of 5 outperforms 71-GBd uniform PAM-8 by up to 2.90dB and 3.80dB in receiver sensitivity, respectively.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a high-speed intensity modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) system with four wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) channels. With the aid of semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and probabilistic shaping (PS) technique, 1T (280Gbit/sx4) PS-PAM8 signals can be successfully transmitted over 40-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF). As a more precise performance criteria, the normalized generalized mutual information (NGMI) should be used to report the performance of PS shaped signals. In this experiment, each WDM channel can support 280Gbit/s/channel PS-PAM8 signals transmission with a NGMI larger than the threshold of a soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) code of 0.83. Considering 25% FEC overhead, the net bit rate of each WDM channel is 220Gbit/s/channel. Therefore, the net transmission rate of the WDM system is 880Gbit/s, which can support the demand of 800G data connection. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to realize over 1Tbit/s PAM signal transmission over 40km in a four-lane IM/DD system.
