Abstract:This study investigates the adsorption behavior of Gemifloxacin (GFX) on the surfaces of alkali and alkaline earth metal-encapsulated B12N12 (M-B12N12) nanocages using density functional theory (DFT) calculations in an aqueous medium. The objective is to explore the potential of these nanomaterials, leveraging the unique characteristics of B12N12 nanocages, for efficient GFX removal. The adsorption energies and electronic structures are thoroughly examined. Our findings reveal that M-B12N12 exhibit considerable promise as candidates for GFX removal due to their favorable properties. Notably, they demonstrate remarkable adsorption energies. Moreover, their complexes with GFX exhibit facile protonation in an acidic medium, facilitated by their high protonation energy of approximately −95 kcal/mol. This protonation feature enables the easy desorption process, thereby facilitating the recovery of the substrate for further utilization. The outcomes of this investigation provide a novel insight for future research on the adsorption mechanisms of pharmaceuticals on boron nitride-based nanomaterials, particularly nanocages, with the objective of identifying potential substrates for effective GFX removal.
