Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) is a class of material that is highly porous and modular. Due to their unique properties, MOFs have found applications in gas storage, gas separation, sensing, and supercapacitors. [Zn2(H2L)2(1,2-Bis(4-pyridyl)ethene)4]n, zinc (Zn)-based MOF was used in this work to achieve mode-locked operation in a thulium/holmium-doped fiber laser due to its excellent optical absorption at a wavelength of 1925 nm. The saturable absorber (SA) was fabricated by drop-casting a mixture of Zn-MOF and isopropanol on an arc-shaped fiber. The center wavelength of the mode-locked laser is 1906.75 nm, with a maximum average output power of 3.251 mW. The fundamental repetition rate and the pulse width were 12.89 MHz and 1.772 ps. At the same time, the pulse energy and peak power were 252 pJ and 142 W, respectively. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first time an MOF has been used for mode-locked pulse generation in a thulium/holmium-doped all-fiber laser. This work extends the use of MOF material as a saturable absorber for mode-locking applications in near-infrared fiber lasers.

Abstract:Organic materials are an important class of gain media for fabricating miniaturized lasers because they combine fabrication simplicity with wide spectral coverage and tunability. However, progress toward near-infrared (NIR) organic solid-state lasers has been limited because of serious nonradiative processes originating from the severe intermolecular interaction in the condensed state. Here, we develop a strategy to realize room-temperature NIR microscale lasers through encapsulating organic dyes into the cavities of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The spatial confinement of the dye molecules within the MOF pores contributes to suppressing the multiple nonradiative processes (i.e., aggregation-caused quenching and exciton-exciton annihilation). This results in a much higher radiative efficiency and thus much easier population inversion and low-threshold NIR lasing. Furthermore, the lasing wavelength can be further expanded based on the tailorable energy levels of the dye molecules. The results will provide useful enlightenment for the development of miniaturized NIR laser sources for new photonic applications.

Abstract:With the rapid development of ultrafast photonics, the need for optical modulators is expanding. In particular, the optical modulator with a high damage threshold and the ability to generate multiple soliton states. This has prompted an ongoing search for optical modulators based on two-dimensional (2D) materials. Therefore, in this work, a novel 2D material Cr2Sn2Te6 (CSnT) with modulation depth of 6.17% and saturation intensity of 15.97 MW/cm2 is prepared as saturable absorber (SA). The nonlinear optical absorption characteristics and pulse modulation applications of CSnT are showed in the Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL). The fundamental frequency mode-locked operation and the second harmonic mode-locked operation are realized simultaneously in the ring cavity. Moreover, CSnT SA has a high damage threshold and high stability, the damage threshold reaches 467 mW and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is higher than 70 dB. The experimental findings demonstrate that the CSnT-based saturable absorber possesses remarkable nonlinear optical properties, indicating its considerable potential in the realm of ultrafast photonics.

Abstract:A wavelength-tunable microlaser is realized based on the controlled intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process in dye-encapsulated metal-organic framework (MOF) material. The confinement effect of the MOFs is beneficial for low-threshold lasing. By effectively controlling the polarity of the MOF pores, the population distribution between the locally excited and ICT states is continuously modulated, thus achieving broadband tunable MOF-based microlasers.

Abstract:In this contribution, we synthesized iron oxide hydroxide (FeOOH) nanomaterials and successfully demonstrated the application of FeOOH-based saturable absorbers in ultrafast photonics at 1 μm and 1.5 μm. Various characterizations were conducted to analyze the morphological and structural features of FeOOH nanomaterials. Subsequently, a tapered fiber coated with FeOOH was integrated into the resonator as a saturable absorber, exhibiting the significant saturable absorption effect with modulation depths of 1.26 % at 1 μm and 2.61 % at 1.5 μm, respectively. In an Yb-doped fiber laser, stable noise-like mode-locking pulses were achieved with a pulse duration of 519 fs at the operating wavelength of 1037.2 nm with a full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) spectral bandwidth of 4.7 nm, yielding a maximum single pulse energy of 1.23 nJ with a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 47.8 dB. Meanwhile, the conventional soliton pulses were produced in the passively mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser, featuring a pulse duration of 1.02 ps, and an SNR of 42.5 dB at a peak wavelength of 1559.25 nm with a FWHM bandwidth of 2.8 nm. This work demonstrates the considerable nonlinear optical properties of FeOOH nanomaterials in the near-infrared range, proposing a promising saturable absorber for ultrafast photonics applications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional material nanosheets have always been a research hotspot because of their unique structure and properties. We report mode-locked operation in ytterbium-doped fiber laser (YDFL) for the first time by adopting Fe3O4 nanosheets as a saturable absorber (SA). The laser is capable of generating 456 ps pulses, centered around 1039 nm. Our results manifest that Fe3O4 nanosheets are expected to become a new type of saturable absorber, which can better promote the development of mode-locked lasers.

Abstract:Multimode fibers (MMFs) have attracted interest because of their larger mode area and additional spatial degrees of freedom compared with single-mode fibers. Recently, MMFs have been introduced into mode-locked lasers for new cavity structures with better laser performance. Among these lasers, there are two remarkable cases in which MMFs are the key components for mode-locking: One is using a short segment of the MMF as a saturable absorber (SA), which has the advantages of high damage threshold, wide operating bandwidth, and low cost. The other is the construction of multimode cavities with MMFs. Spatiotemporal mode-locking (STML), a general form of mode-locking, can be achieved in such cavities. Herein, we review these two types of mode-locked lasers with MMFs. The principles of MMF-based SA and STML are described based on the common theory of multimode nonlinear fiber optics. Subsequently, we present a detailed overview of the recent progress regarding these lasers, including lasers mode-locked by MMF-based SAs at the 1-, 1.5-, and 2-μm bands, as well as spatiotemporal mode-locked MMF lasers. A perspective for the development of mode-locked lasers with MMFs is also provided.

Abstract:Compared with continuous wave lasers, ultrafast lasers have the advantages of ultra-short pulse width and ultra-high peak power, and have significant applications in optical communications, medical diagnostics, and precision machining. Saturable absorber (SA) technology is the most effective technique for the generation of ultra-fast lasers, which are based on artificial SAs and natural SAs. Among them, the semiconductor saturable absorber mirror has become the most commonly used form at present. Recently, basic research and application of nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene have been developed rapidly. Researchers have found that nanomaterials exhibit extraordinary characteristics in ultrafast photonics, such as the low saturation intensity of CNTs, zero-band gap of graphene, and extremely high modulation depth of the topological insulator nano-films. Since graphene was first reported as an SA in 2009, many other nanomaterials have been successively explored, resulting in the rapid development of novel nanomaterial-based SAs. In this paper, we classified the nanomaterials used in SA mode-locking technology at 1.5 mu m and reviewed their research progress with a particular focus on nonlinear optical properties, integration strategies, and applications in the field of ultrafast photonics.

Abstract:An Er-doped mode-locked fiber laser with a saturable absorber based on single mode - graded index multimode - single mode fiber (SMF-GIMF-SMF) with inner microcavity is demonstrated. The modulation depth of the saturable absorber was measured to be 1.9% when the SMF-GIMF-SMF structure is bent to a certain state. Such a simple saturable absorber enables the mode-locking operation in a ring Er-doped fiber laser and ultrafast pulses with pulse energy of 0.026 nJ and pulse width of 528 fs at the fundamental repetition rate of 14.34 MHz can be generated. Abstract:In this work, we successfully prepared ZnO/Co3O4 nanocomposites with different oxygen vacancy concentrations by calcining core-shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67. ZnO/Co3O4 nanocomposites possessed remarkable nonlinear optical (NLO) properties in the near-infrared region. ZnO/Co3O4 nanocomposites as saturable absorbers were successfully applied in the Er-doped mode-locking fiber laser for the first time. At a pump power of 30 mW, the conventional soliton mode-locking pulses with a central wavelength of 1558.3 nm, pulse duration of 1.71 ps, the spectral width of 1.55 nm, and fundamental frequency of 6.06 MHz were demonstrated. High harmonic mode-locking pulses of 242nd and 181st harmonics (corresponding to the repetition rates of 1.465 and 1.114 GHz) were also separately obtained, and the harmonic mode-locking pulse duration was ~ 1.5 ps. These experimental results well indicate that oxygen vacancies in ZnO/Co3O4 can improve the photogenerated electron-hole separation, thus enhancing the effect of light-matter interactions and the nonlinear optical response. Besides, the lower saturation intensity and larger modulation depth could benefit the harmonic mode-locking pulses generation.

Abstract:Wideband optical saturable absorbers (SA) are an ideal laser component for pulse laser generation in different wavelengths, which has attracted tremendous attention in recent years. Herein, a MoO3-x-based novel wideband optical SA has been demonstrated by utilizing it for ∼1/1.5/2 μm Q-switched pulses generation. After separately integrating the MoO3-x-SA into Yb-, Er- and Tm-doped fiber lasers, passively Q-switched pulses with pulse durations of ∼1.5/2.2/1.6 μs, repetition rates of several tens kilohertz at corresponding wavelengths of ∼1038/1562.9/1910 nm are obtained. Our work firstly reveals the remarkable wideband optical saturable absorption of the MoO3-x, which strongly implies the potential application in infrared photonics devices. It may also provide new opportunities for wideband optical SA based on oxygen-deficient metal oxides.

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces, i.e., thin planar structures with subwavelength metal or dielectric unit cells, have attracted great interest due to their intriguing capabilities of shaping light in both linear and nonlinear regimes. However, their saturable absorption properties and corresponding applications have so far been rarely exploited. Here we report on passively mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber lasers utilizing saturable metasurfaces made of periodically arranged gold nanorods. Three 400-nm-period metasurfaces with gold nanorods of different lengths (from 210 to 240 nm) and plasmonic resonances (from 968 to 1044 nm) are fabricated and found to exhibit nonlinear absorption with decent modulation depths, facilitating the formation of mode-locking states at 1060 nm. The corresponding lasers generate typically mode-locked pulses with the duration of ∼ 62.3 ps, repetition rate of 10.33 MHz, and signal-to-noise ratio of ∼74 dB. Our experimental results demonstrate that the gold nanorod-based metasurfaces can be used as relatively broadband mode-lockers in the 1-μm-wavelength range.

Abstract:We demonstrate the generation of versatile mode-locked operations in an Er-doped fiber laser with an indium tin oxide (ITO) saturable absorber (SA). As an epsilon-near-zero material, ITO has been only used to fashion a mode-locked fiber laser as an ITO nanoparticle-polyvinyl alcohol SA. However, this type of SA cannot work at high power or ensure that the SA materials can be transmitted by the light. Thus, we covered the end face of a fiber with a uniform ITO film using the radio frequency magnetron sputtering technology to fabricate a novel ITO SA. Using this new type of SA, single-wavelength pulses, dual-wavelength pulses, and triple-wavelength multi-pulses were achieved easily. The pulse durations of these mode-locked operations were 1.67, 6.91, and 1 ns, respectively. At the dual-wavelength mode-locked state, the fiber laser could achieve an output power of 2.91 mW and a pulse energy of 1.48 nJ. This study reveals that such a proposed film-type ITO SA has excellent nonlinear absorption properties, which can promote the application of ITO film for ultrafast photonics.

Intrinsic Ultralow-Threshold Laser Action from Rationally Molecular Design of Metal–Organic Framework Materials

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are superior for multiple applications including drug delivery, sensing, and gas storage because of their tunable physiochemical properties and fascinating architectures. Optoelectronic application of MOFs is difficult because of their porous geometry and conductivity issues. Recently, a few optoelectronic devices have been fabricated by a suitable design of integrating MOFs with other materials. However, demonstration of laser action arising from MOFs as intrinsic gain media still remains challenging, even though some studies endeavor on encapsulating luminescence organic laser dyes into the porous skeleton of MOFs to achieve laser action. Unfortunately, the aggregation of such unstable laser dyes causes photoluminescence quenching and energy loss, which limits their practical application. In this research, unprecedently, we demonstrated ultralow-threshold (∼13 nJ/cm2) MOF laser action by a judicious choice of metal nodes and organic linkers during synthesis of MOFs. Importantly, we also demonstrated that the white random lasing from the beautiful microflowers of organic linkers possesses a porous network, which is utilized to synthesize the MOFs. The highly luminescent broad-band organic linker 1,4-NDC, which itself exhibits a strong white random laser, is used not only to achieve the stimulated emission in MOFs but also to reduce the lasing threshold. Such white lasing has multiple applications from bioimaging to the recently developed versatile Li-Fi technology. In addition, we showed that the smooth facets of MOF microcrystals can show Fabry–Perot resonant cavities having a high quality factor of ∼103 with excellent photostability. Abstract:We report a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) with phase shift compensation. The SESAM shows a uniform low-intensity reflectivity and a modulation depth up to 12% for the wavelength from 1000 to 1100 nm. A linear cavity all-normal dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser has proved its mode locking performance for the wavelength of both 1030 nm and 1064 nm.

Abstract:A saturable absorber (SA) is one of the important components in a passive mode-locked fibre laser configuration to attain picosecond- to femtosecond-competent ultrashort pulses for fulfilling the imperatives of industries, particularly engineering and life sciences. The substantiation of a newfound SA in the generation of mode-locked pulses utilising molybdenum gallium carbide (Mo 2 Ga 2 C)—a MAX phase nanomaterial—was authenticated in this work. A Mo 2 Ga 2 C SA thin film was fabricated via a simple solution with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the hosting medium. Linear absorption, modulation depth, non-saturable absorption, and saturation intensity of the 17.141-μm Mo 2 Ga 2 C SA were found to be 8.29%, 19.82%, 9.21% and 2.85 kW/cm 2 , respectively. The fabricated Mo 2 Ga 2 C SA was then implemented into an erbium-doped fibre laser (EDFL) system to realise the eminently stable mode-locked fibre laser at a centre wavelength of 1559.2 nm and rudimentary signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 54.8 dB. The pulse repetition rate and pulse width were measured to be 968.72 kHz and 2.028 ps successively. The maximum pulse energy and peak power are 10.219 nJ and 24.12 mW. In corroboration with previous reports, the implementation of Mo 2 Ga 2 C as a mode-locker is propitious in validating the impressively stable and ultrafast nonlinear fibre laser system for further multidisciplinary applications, for instance, medical instrumentation, sensing and range finding, communication, and military due to its excellent optical, physical, thermal, and mechanical properties.

Abstract:Due to the periodically physical/chemical environment and high‐efficient confinement effect of the metal‐organic framework (MOF) only possessing 1D channels, the authors realize periodically and highly aligned dye molecule integration within the MOF hybrid material ZJU‐68⊃DMASM. Such molecule integration can provide an opportunity to directly determine 4‐[p‐(dimethylamino)styryl]‐1‐methylpyridinium (DMASM) molecules in the MOF channels by electron density mapping using X‐ray diffraction data. Furthermore, combining the anisotropic emission property of such molecule integration and the perfect crystal morphology of ZJU‐68 serving as the natural resonant cavity, the authors obtain a single‐mode linearly polarized laser excited by light ranging from visible to near‐infrared.
