Abstract:The contact mechanics of individual, very small particles with other particles and walls is studied using a nanoindenter setup that allows normal and lateral displacement control and measurement of the respective forces. The sliding, rolling and torsional forces and torques are tested with borosilicate microspheres, featuring radii of about 10$\mu$m. The contacts are with flat silicon substrates of different roughness for pure sliding and rolling and with silicon based, ion-beam crafted rail systems for combined rolling and torsion. The experimental results are discussed and compared to various analytical predictions and contact models, allowing for two concurrent interpretations of the effects of surface roughness, plasticity and adhesion. This enables us to determine both rolling and torsion friction coefficients together with their associated length scales. Interestingly, even though normal contacts behave elastically (Hertzian), all other modes of motion display effects due to surface roughness and consequent plastic deformation. The influence of adhesion is interpreted in the framework of different models and is very different for different degrees of freedom, being largest for rolling.
Droplets sliding on soft solids shed elastocapillary rails

Abstract:The surface tension of partially wetting droplets deforms soft substrates. These deformations are usually localized to a narrow region near the contact line, forming a so-called `elastocapillary ridge.' When a droplet slides along a substrate, the movement of the elastocapillary ridge dissipates energy in the substrate and slows the droplet down. Previous studies have analyzed isotropically spreading droplets and found that the advancing contact line `surfs' the elastocapillary ridge, with a velocity determined by a local balance of capillary forces and bulk rheology. Here, we experimentally explore the dynamics of a droplet sliding across soft substrates. At low velocities, the contact line is nearly circular, and dissipation increases logarithmically with speed. At higher droplet velocities, the contact line adopts a bullet-like shape, and the dissipation levels off. At the same time, droplets shed a pair of `elastocapillary rails' that fade away slowly behind it. These results suggest that droplets favor sliding along a stationary ridge over surfing atop a translating one.

Vibration Analysis of Fluid-Conveying Nanotubes Embedded in an Elastic Medium Considering Surface Effects

Abstract:An analytical model is developed to study the surface effects on the vibration behavior including the natural frequency and the critical flow velocity of fluid-conveying nanotubes embedded in an elastic medium. The effects of surface elasticity and residual surface stress are accounted through the surface elasticity model and the Young-Laplace equation. A Winkler-type foundation is employed to model the interaction of nanotubes and the surrounding medium. The results show that the surface effects have more prominent influences on the nature frequency with smaller nanotube thickness, larger aspect ratio and larger elastic medium constants. Both surface layers and the elastic medium enhance the stability of nanotubes. This study might be helpful for designing the fluid-conveying nanotube devices in NEMS and MEMS systems.
Sliding or Rolling? Characterizing single-particle contacts

Abstract:Contacts between particles in dense, sheared suspensions are believed to underpin much of their rheology. Roughness and adhesion are known to constrain the relative motion of particles, and thus globally affect the shear response, but an experimental description of how they microscopically influence the transmission of forces and relative displacements within contacts is lacking. Here we show that an innovative colloidal-probe atomic force microscopy technique allows the simultaneous measurement of normal and tangential forces exchanged between tailored surfaces and microparticles while tracking their relative sliding and rolling, unlocking the direct measurement of coefficients of rolling friction, as well as of sliding friction. We demonstrate that, in the presence of sufficient traction, particles spontaneously roll, reducing dissipation and promoting longer-lasting contacts. Conversely, when rolling is prevented, friction is greatly enhanced for rough and adhesive surfaces, while smooth particles coated by polymer brushes maintain well-lubricated contacts. We find that surface roughness induces rolling due to load-dependent asperity interlocking, leading to large off-axis particle rotations. In contrast, smooth, adhesive surfaces promote rolling along the principal axis of motion. Our results offer direct values of friction coefficients for numerical studies and an interpretation of the onset of discontinuous shear thickening based on them, opening up new ways to tailor rheology via contact engineering.

Non-monotonic motion of sliding droplets on strained soft solids

Abstract:Soft materials are ubiquitous in technological applications that require deformability, for instance, in flexible, water-repellent coatings. However, the wetting properties of pre-strained soft materials are only beginning to be explored. Here we study the sliding dynamics of droplets on pre-strained soft silicone gels, both in tension and in compression. Intriguingly, in compression we find a non-monotonic strain dependence of the sliding speed: mild compressions decelerate the droplets, but stronger compressions lead again to faster droplet motion. Upon further compression, creases nucleate under the droplets until finally, the entire surface undergoes the creasing instability, causing a ``run-and-stop" droplet motion. We quantitatively elucidate the speed modification for moderate pre-strains by incremental viscoelasticity, while the acceleration for larger strains turns out to be linked to the solid pressure, presumably through a lubrication effect of expelled oligomers.

Abstract:Elastocapillary phenomena involving elastic deformation of solid structures coupled with capillary effects of liquid droplets/films can be observed in a diversity of fields, e.g., biology and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Understanding the physical mechanisms underlying these phenomena is of great interest for the design of new materials and devices by utilizing the effects of surface tension at micro and nano scales. In this paper, some recent developments in the investigations on elastocapillary phenomena are briefly reviewed. Especially, we consider the deformation, adhesion, self-assembly, buckling and wrinkling of materials and devices induced by surface tensions or capillary forces. The main attention is paid to the experimental results of these phenomena and the theoretical analysis methods based on continuum mechanics. Additionally, the applications of these studies in the fields of MEMS, micro/nanometrology, and biomimetic design of advanced materials and devices are discussed.

Abstract:It is widely appreciated that surface tension can dominate the behavior of liquids at small scales. Solids also have surface stresses of a similar magnitude, but they are usually overlooked. However, recent work has shown that these can play a central role in the mechanics of soft solids such as gels. Here, we review this emerging field. We outline the theory of surface stresses, from both mechanical and thermodynamic perspectives, emphasizing the relationship between surface stress and surface energy. We describe a wide range of phenomena at interfaces and contact lines where surface stresses play an important role. We highlight how surface stresses cause dramatic departures from classic theories for wetting (Young–Dupré), adhesion (Johnson–Kendall–Roberts), and composites (Eshelby). A common thread is the importance of the ratio of surface stress to an elastic modulus, which defines a length scale below which surface stresses can dominate.

Abstract:A thin liquid film with non-zero curvature at its free surface spontaneously flows to reach a flat configuration, a process driven by Laplace pressure gradients and resisted by the liquid's viscosity. Inspired by recent progresses on the dynamics of liquid droplets on soft substrates, we here study the relaxation of a viscous film supported by an elastic foundation. Experiments involve thin polymer films on elastomeric substrates, where the dynamics of the liquid-air interface is monitored using atomic force microscopy. A theoretical model that describes the coupled evolution of the solid-liquid and the liquid-air interfaces is also provided. In this soft-levelling configuration, Laplace pressure gradients not only drive the flow, but they also induce elastic deformations on the substrate that affect the flow and the shape of the liquid-air interface itself. This process represents an original example of elastocapillarity that is not mediated by the presence of a contact line. We discuss the impact of the elastic contribution on the levelling dynamics and show the departure from the classical self-similarities and power laws observed for capillary levelling on rigid substrates.

Abstract:The ability of soft matter such as drops and bubbles to change shape dynamically during interaction can give rise to counter-intuitive behaviour that may be expected of rigid materials. Here we show that dimple formation on approach and the possibility of coalescence on separation of proximal drops in relative motion are examples of this general dynamic behaviour of soft matter that arise from the coupling between hydrodynamic forces and geometric deformations. The key parameter is a film capillary number Caf = (muVo/sigma)(R/Ho)2 that depends on viscosity mu, interfacial tension sigma, the Laplace radius R, characteristic film thickness Ho and velocity Vo.

Rolling motion of a rigid sphere on a structured rubber substrate aided by a random noise and an external bias

Abstract:We study the rolling motion of a small solid sphere on a surface patterned rubber substrate in an external field with and without a noise. In the absence of the noise, the ball does not move below a threshold force above which it accelerates sub-linearly with the applied field. In the presence of a random noise, the ball exhibits a stochastic rolling with a net drift, the velocity of which increases non-linearly with the strength of the noise (K). From the evolution of the displacement distribution, it is evident that the rolling is controlled by a Coulomb like friction at a very low velocity, a super-linear friction at an intermediate velocity and a linear kinematic friction at a large velocity. This transition from a non-linear to a linear friction control of motion can be discerned from another experiment in which the ball is subjected to a small amplitude periodic asymmetric vibration in conjunction with a random noise. Here, as opposed to that of a fixed external force, the rolling velocity decreases with the increase of the strength of the noise suggesting a progressive fluidization of the interface. Furthermore, the ball exhibits a flow reversal with the increase of the amplitude of the asymmetric vibration, which is indicative of a profile of friction that first descends and then ascends with velocity. An approximate non-linear friction model with the non-linearity decreasing with K is somewhat consistent with the evolution of the displacement fluctuation that also explains the sigmoidal variation of the drift velocity with the strength of the noise. This research sets the stage for studying friction in a new way, in which it is submitted to a noise and then its dynamic response is studied using the tools of statistical mechanics.

Abstract:The shape of a soft solid is largely determined by the balance between elastic and surface energies with capillarity becoming important at length scales smaller than the elastocapillary length, which approaches the millimeter scale for the softest hydrogels, leading to many new and surprising phenomena. This review is focused on describing recent experimental and theoretical progress on the deformations of soft solids due to capillarity in two-phase systems for both statics and dynamics. Relative to rigid solids, surface tension can lead to the rounding of sharp corners, wrinkling and creasing, and general morphological shape-change of the static equilibrium configuration, beyond a critical elastocapillary number. With regard to dynamics, both surface tension and viscoelasticity affect wave number selection in a number of dynamic pattern formation phenomena in soft solids, such as elastocapillary-gravity waves, Rayleigh–Taylor instability, Plateau–Rayleigh instability, Faraday waves, and drop oscillations, all of which have direct analogs with classical hydrodynamic instabilities helping to interpret the relevant physics.

Abstract:Dynamics of microparticles close to interfaces is a relevant topic in Soft Matter. Translational and rotational dynamics of particles possessing different shapes govern a broad range of interfacial phenomena from biofilm formation, drug delivery and particle active rolling motion. These dynamics usually occur in the presence of external fields such as shear flows, electric fields and gravity. By experiments and theoretical models, we investigate the rolling and translational motion of rod-shaped microparticles close to a solid wall in the presence or absence of a shear flow. Hydrodynamics, longrange surface forces and Brownian motion act on the micro rods, which show non-trivial dynamics such as translation motion orthogonal to the flow direction and preferential ordering with the rod long axis perpendicular to the flow direction.

Abstract:A huge number of technological and biological systems involve the lubricated contact between rough surfaces of soft solids in relative accelerated motion. Examples include dynamical rubber seals and the human joints. In this study, we consider an elastic cylinder with random surface roughness in accelerated sliding motion on a rigid, perfectly flat (no roughness) substrate in a fluid. We calculate the surface deformations, interface separation and the contributions to the friction force and the normal force from the area of real contact and from the fluid. The driving velocity profile as a function of time is assumed to be either a sine function, or a linear multi-ramp function. We show how the squeeze-in and squeeze-out processes, occurring in accelerated sliding, quantitatively affect the Stribeck curve with respect to the steady sliding. Finally, the theory results are compared to experimental data.

Capillary-lubrication force exerted on a 2D particle moving towards a fluid interface

Abstract:A rigid object moving in a viscous fluid and in close proximity with an elastic wall experiences self-generated elastohydrodynamic interactions. This has been the subject of an intense research activity, with a recent and growing attention given to the particular case of elastomeric and gel-like substrates. Here, we address the situation where the elastic wall is replaced by a capillary surface. Specifically, we analyze the lubrication flow generated by the prescribed normal motion of a rigid infinite cylinder near the deformable interface separating two immiscible and incompressible viscous fluids. Using a combination of analytical and numerical treatments, we compute the emergent capillary-lubrication force at leading order in compliance, and characterize its dependencies with the interfacial tension, viscosities of the fluids, and length scales of the problem. Interestingly, we identify two main contributions: i) a velocity-dependent adhesion-like force ; ii) an acceleration-dependant inertial-like force. Our results may have implications for the mobility of colloids near complex interfaces and for the motility of confined microbiological entities.

Abstract:The force between two approaching solids in a liquid medium becomes increasingly large with decreasing separation—a phenomenon that prevents contact between the two solids. This growth in force occurs because of the intervening liquid, and studies of such physical systems constitute the classical discipline of lubrication. Furthermore, when the solid(s) are soft, there are quantitative as well as qualitative alterations in the force interaction due to the solids' deformation. The underlying physics as well as resultant system behavior is even more complex when forces of non-hydrodynamic origin come into play. Two major classes of such forces are the DLVO (Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek) forces and the non-DLVO molecular forces. Studies assessing the coupling of these physical phenomenon are avenues of contemporary research. With this view, we perform an analytical study of oscillatory motion of a rigid sphere over an ultra-thin soft coating with an electrolytic solution filling the gap between them. We delineate the distinctive effects of solvation force as well as substrate compliance. Our key finding is the major augmentation in the force and substrate-deformation characteristics of the system due to solvation force when the confinement reduces to a few nanometers. Consideration of solvation force leads to up to four orders of magnitude and up to three orders of magnitude increment in force and substrate-deformation, respectively. While higher softness leads to higher deformation (as expected), its effect on force and substrate-deformation characteristics exhibits a tendency toward amelioration of the increment due to solvation force.

Abstract:The interaction of surfaces in relative motion in wet environments is dominated by lubrication forces, which play a pivotal role in the dynamics of microscopic systems. Here, we develop motile vesicles that exploit lubrication forces to roll on substrates. The activity of the vesicle comes from the confined rotational flow generated by a driven rotating particle encapsulated within the vesicle by droplet-microfluidics. Lubrication forces driving vesicle rolling are controlled by membrane mechanics and its tribological properties. This provides the design principles for motile vesicles that exploit frictional forces to efficiently navigate through complex environments.

Abstract:The dynamic of contact formation between soft materials immersed in a fluid is accompanied by fluid drainage and elastic deformation. As a result, controlling the coupling between lubrication pressure and elasticity provides strategies to design materials with reversible and dynamic adhesion to wet or flooded surfaces. We characterize the elastic deformation of a soft coating with nanometer-scale roughness as it approaches and contacts a rigid surface in a fluid environment. The lubrication pressure during the approach causes elastic deformation and prevents contact formation. We observe deformation profiles that are drastically different from those observed for elastic half-space when the thickness of the soft coating is comparable to the hydrodynamic radius. In contrast, we show that surface roughness favors fluid drainage without altering the elastic deformation. As a result, the coupling between elasticity and slip (caused by surface roughness) can lead to trapped fluid pockets in the contact region.

Abstract:>The solidification and interfacial slip in nanometer-scale lubricating films as well as the contact and adhesion of metal crystals have been studied via molecular dynamics simulations. Results show that the critical pressure for the solid-liquid transition declines as the film thickness decreases, in-dicating that the lubricant in the thin films may exist in a solid-like state. It is also found that the interfa-cial slip may occur in thin films at relatively low shear rate, and there is a good correlation between the slip phenomenon and the lubricant solidification. The simulations reveal that a micro-scale adhesion may take place due to the atomic jump during the process of approaching or separating of two smooth crystal surfaces, which provides important information for understanding the origin of interfacial friction.

Abstract:Surface tension force plays a vital role when the length scale of a system is small (i.e., in the micro/nano meter range). In the case of compliant structures and soft substrates, the competition between interfacial energy and elastic strain energy in the bulk gives rise to many interesting phenomena. Elastocapillarity refers to the study of the effects of deformation of flexible structures or soft substrates under the action of capillary forces. In contrast to rigid structures/substrates, the liquid surface tension force at the three-phase contact line could deform compliant structures or soft solids, thus resulting in interesting dynamics. The elastocapillary interaction between liquid and solid can give rise to stiction in microstructures, wrapping of droplet by flexible structures, buckling of fibres, and ridge formation at the contact line of a droplet on a soft substrate. Besides, recent research has shown that elastocapillarity can aid in the manipulation of liquid flow through flexible confinements and over soft substrates. Here, we report an extensive review of the literature on elastocapillarity mainly focusing on the elastocapillary-based liquid transport. The research in the field has been broadly classified into three different categories: liquid flow in compliant microchannels, liquid flow in flexible structures, and transport of droplets over soft elastic substrates. In each of the above cases, theoretical understanding of the mechanism responsible for liquid transport, and experimental studies leading to interesting results and observations are presented and discussed. Numerical modelling of elastocapillarity phenomena is also presented. Finally, we discuss the research challenges and future directions in the field of elastocapillarity-based transport of liquids.
