Abstract:Today, discarded plastics in nature have caused serious "white pollution", however these plastic wastes contain abundant carbon resources that could serve as the feedstock to produce commodities. Because of this, it is requisite to convert these plastic wastes into valuable chemicals. Herein, the state-of-the-art techniques for plastic conversion are divided into two categories, those performed under violent conditions and mild conditions, in which the conversion mechanisms are discussed. The strategies under violent conditions are closer to practical application thanks to their excellent conversion efficiencies, while the strategies under mild conditions are more environmentally friendly, showing enormous development potential in the future. We summarize in detail the pyrolysis, hydropyrolysis, solvolysis and microwave-initiated catalysis for bond cleavage in plastic wastes at temperatures ranging from 448 to 973 K. Also, we overview the photocatalysis, electrocatalysis and biocatalysis for bond cleavage in plastic wastes at near and even normal temperature and pressure. Finally, we present some suggestions and outlooks concerning the improvement of current techniques and in-depth mechanisms of investigation for conversion of plastics into valuable chemicals.

Abstract:Approximately 80% of the >350 Mt of plastics produced annually is turned into waste, which equals 30% of the European electricity consumption. Chemocatalytic strategies giving life to fuels, chemicals, and monomers promise to transform plastic pollution, barely addressed by incineration and mechanical recycling, into an opportunity. Under the motto "catalysis generates plastics and should handle their fate," this review integrates fundamentals and applications of catalytic transformations of seven major plastics. Following algorithmic analysis of >400 articles and patents, it outlines relevant systems for 13 frontrunner routes based on heterogeneous, homogeneous, and biocatalysis. Given the predominance of off-the-shelf catalysts, it stresses transposable state-of-the-art systems of developed fields to foster design of materials. Based on recent system engineering analyses, it highlights more sustainable paths for implementation, unattended by current trends in industry and academia. It closes with a unified view and critical thoughts on research priorities to accelerate progress toward a sustainable plastic economy.

Abstract:Plastics have revolutionized our lives; however, the exponential growth of their usage has led to a global crisis. More sustainable strategies are needed to address this dilemma and transform the plastics economy from a linearity to a circular model. Herein, we systematically summarize the recent progress in renewable energy‐driven plastic conversion strategies, including photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and their integration. By introducing the significant works, the design principles, mechanisms, and system regulations, we decipher and compare the various aspects of plastic conversion. These approaches show high reactivity and selectivity under environmentally benign conditions and provide alternative reaction pathways for plastic conversion. Plastic upcycling as a chemical feedstock can yield value‐added chemicals and fuels, contributing to the establishment of a sustainable and circular economy. Additionally, several innovations in reaction engineering and system designs are presented. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of sustainable energy‐driven plastic conversion technologies are comprehensively discussed.

Abstract:Due to the ever-expanding uses of plastics and shortage of rational waste management, plastic wastes have accumulated in the global environment and reached 6,300 million metric tons. Considering the large amount of CO2 and microplastics (MPs) emissions throughout the cradle to grave of plastics, there has been a notable surge in interest regarding the utilization of these carbon-rich wastes as feedstocks for the reclamation of valuable chemicals. Here, state-of-the-art technologies of catalytic plastics conversion driven by heat, light, electricity, and enzyme toward various valuable chemicals are summarized. Selective C–H, C–O, and C–C bond transformations in the plastics conversion are highlighted, which will uncover the reaction pathway and optimize the product selectivity. Innovations in catalysts and catalytic systems for circumventing harsh conditions and constructing low-carbon recycling systems are also discussed. Finally, outlooks for the future development of selective plastics-to-chemicals conversion in contributing toward carbon neutrality and zero plastic wastes are proposed.

Abstract:The massive waste of plastics is resulting in serious environmental issues, yet plastics can be regarded as raw carbon materials to produce value-added chemicals by catalytic methods. In particular, recently-developed photocatalytic and electrocatalytic processes are promising for plastic conversion. Recent reviews about plastic recycling focus on traditional thermochemical methods, however, there have been few reported reviews on advanced photo- and electrochemical processes. Therefore, here we review clean catalytic technologies to convert plastics into fuels, materials and fine chemicals, with focus on photo-, electro-, photoelectrochemical catalysis and solar thermal electrochemical processes. The catalytic mechanisms, processes, conditions as well as pretreatment methods for various plastics upcylcing are discussed and summarized, challenges are explained, and directions for upgrading and transforming plastics in the future are proposed.

Abstract:With the escalating demand and utilization of plastics, considerable attention has been given to controlling plastic pollution. Among these methodologies, photocatalytic upcycling of plastic has emerged as a promising method for plastic management due to its energy-saving and eco-friendly properties. In the past several years, great efforts have been devoted to the photocatalytic conversion of a variety of commercial plastic types. These encouraging endeavors foreshadow the continued progression and application in this field. In this review, recent advancements in the photocatalytic upcycling of plastics are reviewed. The fundamentals and principles of photocatalytic deconstruction of plastics are first introduced. Then, we summarize the works on the reforming of different types of plastic, including polyolefins, polyesters, and other types. Finally, some challenges and possible solutions are provided for the development of photocatalytic upcycling of plastics.

Abstract:Originating from the desire to improve sustainability, producing fuels and chemicals from the conversion of biomass and waste plastic has become an important research topic in the twenty-first century. Although biomass is natural and plastic synthetic, the chemical nature of the two are not as distinct as they first appear. They share substantial structural similarities in terms of their polymeric nature and the types of bonds linking their monomeric units, resulting in close relationships between the two materials and their conversions. Previously, their transformations were mostly studied and reviewed separately in the literature. Here, we summarize the catalytic conversion of biomass and waste plastics, with a focus on bond activation chemistry and catalyst design. By tracking the historical and more recent developments, it becomes clear that biomass and plastic have not only evolved their unique conversion pathways but have also started to cross paths with each other, with each influencing the landscape of the other. As a result, this Review on the catalytic conversion of biomass and waste plastic in a unified angle offers improved insights into existing technologies, and more importantly, may enable new opportunities for future advances.

This review summarizes the state‐of‐the‐art advances on the photocatalytic transformation of plastics into valuable fuels, chemicals, and materials, which sheds light on the establishment of a new paradigm toward a sustainable and circular plastic economy.Plastic waste remains a global challenge due to the massive amounts being produced without satisfactory treatment technologies for recycling and upcycling. Photocatalytic processes are emerging as green and promising approaches to upcycle plastics into value‐added products under mild conditions using sunlight as the energy source. In this review, the recent advances in plastic conversion through photocatalysis have been comprehensively summarized. Special emphasis is placed on the photocatalytic mechanism and the selective CC and CH bond transformations of plastics to access fuels, chemicals, and materials. Finally, the challenges and the perspectives on establishing a new paradigm toward a sustainable and circular plastic economy are also put forward.

Abstract:Plastic waste triggers a series of concerns because of its disruptive impact on the environment and ecosystem. From the point of view of catalysis, however, end-of-life plastics can be seen as an untapped feedstock for the preparation of value-added products. Thus, the development of diversified catalytic approaches for plastics valorization is urgent. Previous reviews of this field have systematically summarized progress made for plastic reclamation. In this review, we emphasize the design of processes by leveraging state-of-the-art technologies from other developed fields to derive a series of valuable polymers, functional materials, and chemicals from waste plastics. The principles, mechanisms, and opportunities for plastic valorization by leveraging chemical catalytic technologies (thermo-, electro-, and photocatalytic) as well as biocatalytic ones are summarized and discussed, which may provide more insights for the future design of catalytic processes. Finally, the outlooks and perspectives to accelerate progress toward a feasible plastic economy are discussed.

Abstract:Plastics are indispensable, but their pollution is triggering a global environmental crisis. Although many end-of-life catalytic options have involved converting plastics into valuable products, a deep understanding of the relationship between polymer structure and recycling performance is significant and urgently needed. Here, we start with a primer of polymeric chain structures on chemical recycling and discuss the structure–performance relationship between the polymer, catalyst, and catalytic reaction. Specifically, the development and challenges of the chemical re/upcycling of waste PET and polyolefins are discussed in-depth. In addition, we also present some prospects for innovations in catalyst synthesis and reaction engineering on the basis of the structure–performance relationship. The discussion ends with a brief perspective on the future of plastic re/upcycling. Abstract:Herein, a comprehensive overview of innovative catalytic technologies for the selective upcycling of plastic waste into high‐value products is provided, including thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis. Special attention is given to elucidating the mechanisms of plastic conversion and the design of catalysts. The huge amount of plastic wastes has become a pressing global environmental problem, leading to severe environmental pollution and resource depletion through conventional downcycling technologies like incineration and landfilling. In contrast, selective upcycling of various plastics offers a promising solution for converting waste plastics into valuable products. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advancements in innovative catalytic technologies, including thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis. Special emphasis is placed on elucidating the reaction mechanisms, activating designated chemical bonds for high selectivity, and elaborating the above techniques in terms of reaction conditions and products. Finally, the application prospects and future development trends in plastic catalysis are discussed, providing valuable insights for realizing a sustainable circular plastic economy.

Abstract:Abstract Polypropylene (PP) makes up a large share of our plastic waste. We investigated the conversion of PP over the industrial Fluid Catalytic Cracking catalyst (FCC‐cat) used to produce gasoline from crude oil fractions. We studied transport limitations arising from the larger size of polymers compared to the crude oil‐based feedstock by testing the components of this catalyst separately. Infrared spectroscopy and confocal fluorescence microscopy revealed the role of the FCC matrix in aromatization, and the zeolite Y domains in coking. An equilibrium catalyst (ECAT), discarded during FCC operation as waste, produced the same aromatics content as a fresh FCC‐cat, while coking decreased significantly, likely due to the reduced accessibility and activity of the zeolite domains and an enhanced cracking activity of the matrix due to metal deposits present in ECAT. This mechanistic understanding provides handles for further improving the catalyst composition towards higher aromatics selectivity.

Abstract:Plastics pollution is causing an environmental crisis, prompting the development of new approaches for recycling, and upcycling. Here, we review challenges and opportunities in chemical and biological catalysis for plastics deconstruction, recycling, and upcycling. We stress the need for rigorous characterization and use of widely available substrates, such that catalyst performance can be compared across studies. Where appropriate, we draw parallels between catalysis on biomass and plastics, as both substrates are low-value, solid, recalcitrant polymers. Innovations in catalyst design and reaction engineering are needed to overcome kinetic and thermodynamic limitations of plastics deconstruction. Either chemical and biological catalysts will need to act interfacially, where catalysts function at a solid surface, or polymers will need to be solubilized or processed to smaller intermediates to facilitate improved catalyst–substrate interaction. Overall, developing catalyst-driven technologies for plastics deconstruction and upcycling is critical to incentivize improved plastics reclamation and reduce the severe global burden of plastic waste.

Abstract:This study reviews the advancements of photothermal catalysis for the upcycling of plastic waste. It outlines the encouraging progress and future challenges in this emerging field regarding three subclasses of mechanisms. Meanwhile, the study emphasizes that the photothermal catalytic upcycling of plastic waste can simultaneously achieve high conversion rate, mild reaction condition, and environmental sustainability. The increasingly massive accumulation of plastic waste is triggering a global pollution crisis, causing severe economic and health issues. As an effective strategy to realize synchronous environmental remediation and value‐added chemical production, the catalytic upcycling of plastics has received extensive attention. Among the upcycling approaches, the emerging photothermal catalysis outstands with features of high conversion efficiency and mild reaction conditions. Herein, the advancements of photothermal catalysis in plastic waste upcycling are reviewed for the first time. The general limitations of the traditional thermocatalytic and photocatalytic upcycling of plastics are first discussed. Subsequently, the photothermal catalytic approaches to upcycling of plastics are classified into three categories depending on the catalytic mechanism, and discussed in depth. Finally, the current challenges in the field are appraised, and several suggestions concerning the investigation of the mechanisms and practical applications for the conversion of plastics into valuable chemicals are highlighted.
