Abstract:Cosmetic products are chemical substances or mixtures used on the skin, hair, nails, teeth, and the mucous membranes of the oral cavity, whose use is intended to clean, protect, correct body odor, perfume, keep in good condition, or change appearance. The analysis of cosmetic ingredients is often challenging because of their huge complexity and their adulteration. Among various analytical tools, mass spectrometry (MS) has been largely used for compound detection, ingredient screening, quality control, detection of product authenticity, and health risk evaluation. This work is focused on the MS applications in detecting and quantification of some common cosmetic ingredients, i.e., preservatives, dyes, heavy metals, allergens, and bioconjugates in various matrices (leave-on or rinse-off cosmetic products). As a global view, MS-based analysis of bioconjugates is a narrow field, and LC- and GC/GC×GC-MS are widely used for the investigation of preservatives, dyes, and fragrances, while inductively coupled plasma (ICP)-MS is ideal for comprehensive analysis of heavy metals. Ambient ionization approaches and advanced separation methods (i.e., convergence chromatography (UPC2)) coupled to MS have been proven to be an excellent choice for the analysis of scented allergens. At the same time, the current paper explores the challenges of MS-based analysis for cosmetic safety studies.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to address the challenges in cosmetic ingredient analysis, especially the great matrix complexity and variability caused by the complexity and diversity of cosmetic ingredients. Specifically, the paper explores the application of mass spectrometry (MS) techniques in the detection and quantification of cosmetic ingredients, including common ingredients such as preservatives, dyes, heavy metals, allergens, and bioconjugates. The paper also discusses the analysis methods of these ingredients in different types of cosmetics (such as leave - on and rinse - off products) and emphasizes the importance of MS techniques in ensuring the quality and safety of cosmetics. ### Main research contents: 1. **Analysis of bioconjugates**: - The paper mentions that there is less MS research data on various bioconjugates in cosmetics. One study used matrix - assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry to analyze the lipid profiles in different cosmetics (such as lipsticks and skin markers), which was able to distinguish new products, products in use, and expired products. - Using LC - ESI - MS combined with collision - induced dissociation (CID) technology, a rapid, sensitive, and selective analysis of ceramides in cosmetics was carried out for product quality control. 2. **Analysis of preservatives**: - Preservatives such as parabens are widely used in cosmetics, personal care, pharmaceutical, food, and industrial products because of their low volatility, high stability, and antibacterial and antifungal properties. - Studies have found that some parabens may act as endocrine disruptors, increasing the incidence of female breast cancer and malignant melanoma, as well as the risk of contact dermatitis and rosacea. - The paper introduces MS - based analysis methods, such as high - performance liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry (HPLC - MS), ultra - high - performance liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry (UHPLC - MS), and gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC - MS), for determining the levels of preservatives in cosmetics and personal care products. ### Keywords: - Mass spectrometry (MS) - Cosmetic ingredients - Liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry (LC - MS) - Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC - MS) - Fragrances - Preservatives - Dyes - Allergens - Metals - Cosmetic regulations ### Conclusion: By reviewing the application of MS techniques in cosmetic ingredient analysis, the paper emphasizes the indispensability of MS in ensuring the quality and safety of cosmetics. At the same time, the paper also points out some challenges currently faced by MS analysis in cosmetic safety research and proposes directions for future research.
