Abstract:The recent applications of porous organic polymers (POPs) as heterogeneous catalysts for visible light-induced organic transformations are summarized. POPs are constructed from conjugated organic monomers, having the features of convenient synthesis and characterization, high stability for quick recovery and reuse, structural diversity as well as high modifiability. POPs possess rigid conjugated frameworks, relatively large surface areas, tunable porosity and typically insoluble in water or organic solvents, and thus ideal platforms for the development of heterogeneous catalysts. Through incorporating conjugated sensitizer units into the backbones or attaching the sensitizers to the backbone linkers, POPs can be developed as efficient heterogeneous photocatalysts for visible light-induced organic transformations. Due to their high stability and insolubility, POP catalysts can be easily recovered through filtration or centrifugation and recycled. POP-based photocatalysis combines visible light utility and catalyst recycling and thus represents a green and sustainable technique.

Abstract:The search for heterogeneous, visible light-active, transition metal-free, stable, and reusable photocatalysts for organic photoredox reactions remains a challenge for the chemists. Here, this study reports on a series of hybrid photocatalysts consisting of conjugated microporous polymer-based organic semiconductors with immobilized TiO2 nanoparticles. The organic/inorganic semiconductor-based hybrid photocatalytic system can enhance the photoinduced charge separation and thereby increasing the photocatalytic efficiency. As model reactions, the photocatalytic oxidative coupling reaction of amines and the selective oxidation of organic sulfides can be catalyzed with almost quantitative conversion and selectivity. The catalytic efficiency of the hybrid photocatalyst is higher than that of the pristine single photocatalytic systems as the conjugated microporous polymer and TiO2. Furthermore, the mechanistic study of the photoredox reactions is also described.

Abstract:Due to the rapid progress of transition metal photocatalysis, developing novel and effective ruthenium photocatalysts and their corresponding heterogeneous counterparts is highly in demand. In this study, we first prepared tetraiodo-substituted 2,6-bis(1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine ruthenium(II), and further used this complex to construct 2,6-bis(1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine ruthenium(II) embedded porous organic polymers (POP-Ru). The as-prepared Ru(II) complex could be employed as photocatalyst and showed higher photocatalytic activity than the commercial Ru(II) counterparts, but lower than the corresponding polymers. In particular, the polymer POP-Ru-1 has been disclosed to be highly efficient for the photosyntheses of thiocarbomates and disulfides with wide range of substrate scopes. After simple separation workups, the photocatalyst could be recycled and reused for 10 times without obvious loss of its catalytic activity.

Abstract:Organic conjugated polymers with long-range conjugation generally have strong light absorption capacity in the visible light region and impressive performance in charge transfer, which endows them great application potential in the field of opto-electronic materials. However, there are few reports on their use in photocatalytic reactions. At present, it has been reported that a variety of donor-acceptor (D-A) type organic dyes can be used in efficient organic photocatalytic transformations. We designed and synthesized one-dimensional organic conjugated polymers pPhCzBP-Th and pPhCzBP-DTh with D-A structure, and proved that they are good heterogeneous photo-redox catalysts, which can photocatalyze hydrodehalogenation reduction of α-bromoacetophenone and its derivatives. Due to the strong reducibility of the excited state, pPhCzBP-Th can also efficiently reduce α-chloroacetophenone. Furthermore, by simply wrapping the catalyst powder, high-efficient separation of products and catalysts recycling can be achieved.
Recovery of homogeneous photocatalysts by covalent organic framework membranes

Abstract:Abstract Transition metal-based homogeneous photocatalysts offer a wealth of opportunities for organic synthesis. The most versatile ruthenium(II) and iridium(III) polypyridyl complexes, however, are among the rarest metal complexes. Moreover, immobilizing these precious catalysts for recycling is challenging as their opacity may obstruct light transmission. Recovery of homogeneous catalysts by conventional polymeric membranes is promising but limited, as the modulation of their pore structure and tolerance of polar organic solvents are challenging. Here, we report the effective recovery of homogeneous photocatalysts using covalent organic framework (COF) membranes. An array of COF membranes with tunable pore sizes and superior organic solvent resistance were prepared. Ruthenium and iridium photoredox catalysts were recycled for 10 cycles in various types of photochemical reactions, constantly achieving high catalytical performance, high recovery rates, and high permeance. We successfully recovered the photocatalysts at gram-scale. Furthermore, we demonstrated a cascade isolation of an iridium photocatalyst and purification of a small organic molecule product with COF membranes possessing different pore sizes. Our results indicate an intriguing potential to shift the paradigm of the pharmaceutical and fine chemical synthesis campaign.

Abstract:Heterogeneous photocatalysis of iridium (III) complexes faces two major bottle-necks: limited mass/energy transfer and tedious immobilization. In this work, fac -Ir(ppy) 3 is directly anchored to hollow mesoporous polystyrene nanospheres (HMPNs) via one-pot F-C alkylation, achieving the covalent immobilization of fac -Ir(ppy) 3 at a low-cost. The thin shell, pores, hollow interior, and swelling property of HMPNs enable reactants to quickly access to fac -Ir(ppy) 3 , effectively avoiding energy loss in energy transport from excited fac -Ir(ppy) 3 * to reactants. The mass transfer of reactants and optical properties of fac -Ir(ppy) 3 such as quantum yield, luminescent lifetime and band gap energy closely depend on the cross-linking degree of polystyrene. The anchored fac -Ir(ppy) 3 exhibits comparable catalytic activity to homogeneous fac -Ir(ppy) 3 in heterogeneous [2+2] photodimerization of olefins with a good reusability without a significant decrease in yields over ten recycles. This work develops a strategy for fabricating efficient heterogeneous photocatalysts using available non-conjugated polymer as support based on the concept of fast mass transfer of reactants.

Abstract:The establishment of green and environmental friendly sunlight-driven organic reactions has received increasing attention since the 21st century. By virtue of their functional designability, micromesoporous structure, and thermal/chemical stability, porous organic polymers (POPs) have exhibited enormous promise in photocatalytic organic reactions as ideal potential alternatives to conventional small molecule and inorganic semiconductor catalysts. In particular, amorphous POPs are simplified in terms of preparation conditions and process flow. Herein, various amorphous POP materials based on polymers of intrinsic microporosity, hypercrosslinked polymers, conjugated microporous polymers, and porous aromatic frameworks are reviewed, while typical synthetic strategies are briefly introduced. It also highlights an overview of the research progress in photocatalytic oxidation, coupling, reduction, cycloaddition, and polymerization reactions at home and abroad in recent years. Finally, the challenges and prospects for future research on amorphous POPs are presented.
A Simple Strategy to Simultaneously Improve the Lifetime and Activity of Classical Iridium Complex for Photocatalytic Water‐splitting

Abstract:AbstractHerein, we design and synthesize a series of oligomers [Ir(ppy)2(dabpy)‐ODPA]n (D1‐n) by copolymerization of [Ir(ppy)2(dabpy)][PF6] (D2) with 4,4′‐Oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA), to resolve the problem of simultaneous improvement of stability and activity of classical iridium complex for photocatalytic water‐splitting. Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance, and gel permeation chromatography results indicate that the degree of polymerization (n) of D1‐n could be tuned by the synthesis method. The best photocatalytic performance is reached by D1‐n with n at of 2 and/or 3 (D1‐2/3), which exhibits a photocatalytic lifetime up to 676 h and a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of 162055.1 μmol·g‐1. Compared with classical iridium complex D2, the photocatalytic lifetime of D1‐2/3 is about 38 times longer and the photocatalytic activity is 1.3 times higher. Further increase of n leads to a decrease in both photocatalytic lifetime and activity. According to the spectroscopic characterizations, photoelectrochemical experiments, and density functional theory calculation, the significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance of D1‐2/3 originates from the oligomeric structure. The oligomer chain of D1‐2/3 with suitable length acts as a large steric hindrance to reduce the undesired photoinduced decomposition and prolong its lifetime. The possible coupling of adjacent Ir complexes in D1‐2/3 lowers the energy gap and increases the utilization of visible light, which overcomes the adverse effect of large steric hindrance and finally improve the activity. This work first provides a simple strategy for constructing oligomeric Ir photosensitizers to simultaneously achieve long lifetime and high activity, it will lay the foundation for the design of highly efficient photosensitizers in the future.

Abstract:The merger of photocatalysis and transition-metal catalysis is of particular interest to develop useful and challenging synthetic methodologies. The catalytic activities of conventional dual-catalytic systems, however, are limited by the low synergistic efficiency between discrete catalytic centers due to their long average distance in solution. Herein we carefully decorated Ir(III) photosensitizers and Ni(II) transition-metal catalyst into flexible polymers to afford two polymer-supported dual catalysts (<b>P1–Ni</b> and <b>P2–Ni</b>). These polyelectrolyte-type metallopolymers assembled into spherical polymer particles in some polar solvents. Their unique molecular and assembled structure contributed to shortening the distance between catalytic centers and increasing the local catalysts' concentration within the catalyst, thereby greatly facilitating their electron, energy, and organic radical transfers during the catalytic cycles. The enhanced energy interaction and matched redox potential between two catalytic centers within the polymer were confirmed by steady- and transient-state luminescent spectra and cyclic voltammetry. These features enable them in catalyzing challenging organic transformations that involve efficiently incorporated photocatalytic and transition-metal catalytic cycles. We demonstrated that these two catalysts were highly effective in catalyzing C–S cross-coupling, C–O functionalized, C–N cross-coupling, and C–C cross-coupling reactions with broad substrate scopes and low catalyst loadings with turnover numbers of ∼3100, ∼1500, ∼1400, and ∼500, respectively. Abstract:Solar-driven redox chemical processes necessitate the discovery of new photocatalytic materials. As such, pyrene-based porous organic materials have recently been constructed based on resilient and photoactive pyrenes. With a planar π-conjugation, pyrene can be extended toward the foundational building blocks. In principle, pyrene-based porous organic materials can be designed and constructed as potent photocatalysts. Generally, there are two types of covalent bonds, irreversible and reversible, that knit pyrene molecular building blocks for the construction of porous organic materials. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) are generated with irreversible covalent bonds, whereas covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are afforded with reversible ones. Pyrene-based CMPs and COFs can drive various significant photocatalytic reactions, such as selective reduction of protons, carbon dioxide, toxic metals, and oxygen, and selective oxidation of organic molecules. Compared to amorphous CMPs, crystallinity defines COFs. The structure–activity relationships of pyrene-based CMPs and COFs are thoroughly summarized, discussed, and compared in this Review. Note that a reduction event is always associated with an oxidation event and vice versa. Moreover, an electron transfer is typically accompanied by a proton transfer for a complete photocatalytic reaction. Notably, the reaction mechanisms of visible light photocatalysis over pyrene-based CMPs and COFs are also discussed meticulously. This Review can provide a blueprint for developing state-of-the-art porous organic materials for solar photocatalysis.

Ultrathin Conjugated Polymer Nanosheets As Highly Efficient Photocatalyst for Visible Light Driven Oxygen Activation

Abstract:Visible light induced photochemical synthesis represents a promising approach towards green and sustainable organic transformations. However, this protocol is greatly limited because of overly dependence on the noble metal complex based photosensitizers. In this work, we firstly reported newly designed imide based conjugated polymer nanosheets as metal-free heterogeneous photocatalysts for efficient visible light driven oxygen activation. Upon integrating perylene core with triazine- and heptazine- blocks, ultrathin polyimide nanosheets with broad light response, deep valence band level, and excellent oxygen activation property were synthesized. The polymer photocatalysts exhibited superior photocatalytic activity for amine oxidation at room temperature under visible light irradiation. The conversion yield reached up to 99 % with nearly 100 % selectivity as N-benzyl benzaldimine was found the exclusive product. The conversion rates of 250 mmol g(-1) h(-1) was two orders of magnitude higher than that of representative polymer photocatalysts and metal oxide based semiconductors.

Abstract:Structure and morphology engineering of conjugated microporous polymers has been considered a promising strategy in the field of photopolymerization as it has the potential to promote catalytic efficiency and address challenges in product contamination. Herein, hollow conjugated microporous photocatalysts (S-hPorIPN MSs) were constructed by Sonogashira–Hagihara polycondensation on the surface of SiO2 templates, followed by removal of the SiO2 inner cores and sulfonation of the conjugated shells. Upon the introduction of cyano and sulfonic acid substituents, S-hPorIPN MSs were utilized as an excellent heterogeneous photocatalyst to trigger aqueous RAFT polymerization by a 740 nm near-infrared (NIR) light, affording the preparation of diverse polymers with predictable molecular weight and narrow dispersity. The enhanced penetration capabilities provided by NIR wavelengths allowed the photopolymerization to be conducted through synthetic and biological barriers at faster polymerization rates in a non-degassed system. Furthermore, high end-group integrity, excellent monomer/chain transfer agent adaptation, and reliable reusability were highlighted on the S-hPorIPN MSs being applied as photocatalysts for NIR-light-driven polymerization. Taking advantage of the higher surface-area-to-volume ratio and more accessible active sites of S-hPorIPN MSs, we presented the first metal-free heterogeneous catalyst system capable of achieving faster polymerization rates through light-proof barriers for aqueous RAFT polymerization.

Abstract:A series of chalcogenoviologen‐containing platinum(II)‐based supramolecular polymers featuring distinctive donor–acceptor structures for efficient hydrogen evolution is designed. Incorporating the photosensitizer, electron transfer mediator and catalyst into a unified photocatalytic system can minimize the electron transfer distance between photosensitizer and active sites, reducing the possibility of electron–hole recombination and enhancing the photocatalytic performance. Organic polymer photocatalysts have achieved significant progress in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, while developing the integrated organic polymers possessing the functions of photosensitizer, electron transfer mediator, and catalyst simultaneously is urgently needed and presents a great challenge. Considering that chalcogenoviologens are able to act as photosensitizers and electron‐transfer mediators, a series of chalcogenoviologen‐containing platinum(II)‐based supramolecular polymers is designed, which exhibited strong visible light‐absorbing ability and suitable bandgap for highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution without the use of a cocatalyst. The hydrogen evolution rate (HER) increases steadily with the decrease in an optical gap of the polymer. Among these "all‐in‐one" polymers, Se‐containing 2D porous polymer exhibited the best photocatalytic performance with a HER of 3.09 mmol g−1 h−1 under visible light (>420 nm) irradiation. Experimental and theoretical calculations reveal that the distinct intramolecular charge transfer characteristics and heteroatom N in terpyridine unit promote charge separation and transfer within the molecules. This work could provide new insights into the design of metallo‐supramolecular polymers with finely tuned components for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water.

The density function theory calculations reveal that the excitons induced on the neutral pyridine group (D) can be attracted by its neighboring cationic pyridinium one (A), thus the distinct charges separation and transfer enhancement can be realized in one PIP-based photocatalyst. Guided by this, a partially ionized pyridine-pyridinium (PB-PIPs) photocatalysts are fabricated, which show excellent adsorption capacity for the heavy metal Cr(VI) anion on pyridinium cations and rhodamine B (RhB) on the pyridine rings. Significantly, the target-adsorptions promote the accurate deliveries of excitons, that the simultaneous photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) and oxidation of RhB are achieved. The photodegradation performance of PB-PIPs under visible-light irradiation is superior to the state-of-the-art organic photocatalysts. Therefore, this convenient strategy of the valence state regulation provides a promising solution to the focus of synergistically visible-light harvesting, charges separating and transferring, and target-delivering in photocatalysis.

Abstract:Porous organic polymers (POPs) have been shown to be an excellent and sustainable platform for photocatalysis. However, the development of an organic polymer photocatalyst with strong reducing capacity to drive organic transformations still lags far behind. Herein, a donor–acceptor–π (D–A–π) conjugated organic polymer (TX-OXD-P) is designed by introducing 1,3,4-oxadiazole (OXD) units into a truxene-based polymeric framework. The resulting polymer combines enhanced visible-light absorption, an improved charge separation process, and confined micropore environment. More intriguingly, TX-OXD-P exhibits high reducing power and is capable of catalysing pinacol C–C coupling in a metal-free and recyclable fashion. Remarkably, previously challenging carbonyl compounds with significantly negative reduction potentials could be accommodated under the catalysis of TX-OXD-P. The results indicate that structural modification at a molecular level holds a key point to unveil new photocatalytic performance of organic polymers.
