Abstract:Three mixed-ligand coordination polymers, [Cu(oda)(2,2'-bipy)](2) (1), Ni-2(oda)(2)(4,4'-bipy)center dot DMF (2), and [{Ni(oda)(H2O)(2)}(2)(mu-4,4'-bipy)]center dot 2H(2)O (3) were synthesized and characterized. Complex 1 features a 1D chain via intermolecular pi-pi interactions. Complex 2 is a novel 3D microporous coordination polymer with 1D polarized channels. Complex 3 forms a 3D network via extensive hydrogen bonding interactions. Thermogravimetric analyses have been studied. The chemical sensing properties have been investigated in situ by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Complex 1 has a good sensitivity to toluene, complexes 2 and 3 have exceptionally high selectivity and sensitivity to water over organic solvents.

Abstract:Four coordination polymers, [Zn(pda)(bpy)(H2O)]n·nH2O (1), [Cd(pda)(prz)(H2O)]n (2), [Co3(μ3-OH)2(pda)2(pyz)]n·2nH2O (3) and [Pr2(pda)3(H2O)2]n (4) (H2pda=1,3-phenylendiacetic acid, bpy=4,4′-bipyridine, prz=piperazine and pyz=pyrazine) have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized. Complex 1 is a 1D wheel-like chain structure, which is further extended into a 3D metal-organic supramolecular framework by H-bonds and π–π stacking interactions. Complex 2 is a 1D ladder-like chain structure, which is also further extended into a 3D metal-organic supramolecular framework by H-bonds. Complex 3 possess a 2D sheet structure with infrequent two pairs of double-helix chains. Complex 4 features a 3D structure. Both 1 and 2 display strong blue fluorescent emission at room temperature. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of complexes 3 and 4 exhibit antiferromagnetic interactions between the nearest metal ions, with C=9.99 and 3.43cm3mol−1K, and θ=−23.9 and −46.3K, respectively.

Abstract:A series of coordination polymers, namely, [Zn(μ3-L)(H2O)2] (1), [Zn(μ2-L)(2,2'-bpy)(H2O)] (2), [Zn(μ3-L)(μ2-4,4'-bpy)0.5] (3), [Cd(μ3-L)(2,2'-bpy)] (4), and [Cd(μ2-L)(phen)(H2O)] (5) (H2L = 3-carboxy-1-(3'-carboxy-benzyl)-2-oxidopyridinium, 2,2'-bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, 4,4'-bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. These coordination polymers have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analyses, infrared spectra, thermogravimetric analyses and powder X-ray diffraction. The structure analysis of single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that compound 1 shows a 1D double chain which can be expanded to be a 2D supramolecular architecture through intermolecular π-π stacking interaction. In compound 2, the 1D wave-like chains are extended to be a 3D supramolecular framework by intermolecular hydrogen bond and π-π stacking interaction. In compound 3, the infinite rod-like metal ion chains are linked with L2- anions and 4,4'-bpy to form a 3D framework. In compound 4, the adjacent 1D loop-like chains are interconnected to be a 3D supramolecular framework by intermolecular hydrogen bond and π-π stacking interaction. Compound 5 displays a 3D supramolecular architecture extended from the 1D zigzag chains by intermolecular hydrogen bond and π-π stacking interaction. The result reveals that organic ligand plays a key role in the self-assembly of coordination polymers. The luminescent sensing experiments reveal that compounds 1-5 can effectively detect Fe3+, Cr2O72-, and NB. In particular, compound 1 shows the high quenching constant and the low limit of detection for Fe3+.

Abstract:Bis-salicylaldiminato zinc complexes with four new salicylaldiminato ligands: (Ar1=7-(2,4-Me2)C9H4N, Ar2=C6H4 (2a); Ar1=7-(2,4-Me2)C9H4N, Ar2=3,5-tBu2C6H2 (2b); Ar1=7-(2,4-Me2)C9H4N, Ar2=5-BrC6H3 (2c); Ar1=7-(2,4-Me2)C9H4N, Ar2=3,5-Br2C6H2 (2d)) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, 1H, 13C NMR and IR spectroscopy. The molecular structure of complex 2b was confirmed by X-ray crystallography, showing intermolecular π–π interactions in the solid state. These complexes produce bright fluorescence in both solution and the solid state. In addition, the emission color in solution can be tuned in the range 503–532nm by the modification of the salicylaldiminato ligand.

Abstract:Three distinctive coordination polymers [Zn-2(m-bdc)(2)(L)]8DMF2CH(3)OH (1) [Zn-2(bpdc)(2)(L)]9DMF5CH(3)OH (2) and [Cd5Cl10(L)(2)]6DMA2CH(3)OH (3) were synthesized based on a novel pyridine-functional resorcin[4]arene ligand (L=tetrakis(4-mercaptopyridine-ylmethyl) resorcin[4]arene m-H(2)bdc=13-isophthalic acid H(2)bpdc=biphenyl-44 '-dicarboxylic acid and DMA=NN-dimethylacetamide). Among them 1 and 3 exhibit charming two-dimensional layers while 2 gives a three-dimensional framework. The performance of 1 and 3 was studied as solvent-free heterogeneous catalysts for Knoevenagel condensation reaction of which 1 shows an efficient catalytic capability for the reactions of various aldehydes with malononitrile. Apart from that the luminescent performance of 1 and 3 in a series of anions and cations were also explored. Their quenching to Cr2O72- CrO42- and Fe3+ ions makes 1 and 3 become promising luminescent sensors.

Abstract:Five new rare earth complexes with a new flexible tripodal salicylic ligand (H(3)L), 2,2'-(2-((2-carboxyphenoxy)methyl)-2-(4-methylphenylsulfonamido)propane-1,3-diyl)bis(oxy)dibenzoic acid, of formulae [La(2)L(2)(DMF)(4)]·4DMF·4EtOH·2H(2)O (1), [Eu(2)L(2)(DMF)(4)]·2DMF (2), {[GdL(DMF)(H(2)O)(2)]·DMF}(∞) (3), {[TbL(DMF)(H(2)O)(2)]·DMF}(∞) (4) and {[YL(DMF)(H(2)O)(2)]·DMF}(∞) (5) (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) have been prepared. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that complexes 1 and 2 present a cage-like homodinuclear species, while 3-5 show a helical one-dimensional coordination polymer. All these complexes are further connected by hydrogen bonds or π-π interactions, resulting in 3D supramolecular structures. The photophysical properties of the Eu and Tb complexes are investigated in the solid state at room temperature.

Abstract:Two new copper complexes [Cu-4(I)(L2)I-5](n) (1, L2 = 3,5-bis(1-ethylpyridinium-4-yl)-1,2,4-triazol-4-ide) and [Cu-6(I)(L3)(3)Br-3](n) (2, L3 = 3,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazolate) were obtained from the solvothermal reactions of different copper halides with 2,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (L1) in the presence of aqueous ammonia. The X-ray diffraction, IR spectrum and elemental analyses of 1 and 2 clearly show that the 1,3,4-oxadiazole ligand L1 has transformed into the triazolate ligands L2 and L3. Most fascinatingly, 1 represents the first example of an integrated reaction system involving heterocyclic conversion from oxadiazole to triazolate, N-alkylation, and further self-assembly of the in situ generated ligand L2 with metal cations to form a coordination polymer in one solvothermal spot. The possible formation mechanism of 1 is proposed, and in addition, the interesting topologies and luminescence properties of 2 are studied based on the results of the DFT calculations.

In compounds 2 and 3, the binuclear zero dimensional (0D) units are extended to 3D supramolecular frameworks by intermolecular hydrogen bond and π–π stacking interaction. In compound 4, the 0D units constructed by HL− anions, 4,4′-bpy and metal ions are expanded to form a two-dimensional (2D) supramolecular network. Compound 5 shows a different 2D supramolecular structure extended from 1D chain by intermolecular hydrogen bond. The results suggest that organic ligand plays a key role in the formation of the final structures. The solid-state luminescent properties of compounds 1–5 were studied in detail. The results show that the luminescent color of compounds 1–5 can be tunable by varying excitation wavelengths.

Abstract:A racemic bispyridyl ligand (L) was synthesized via a Schiff base condensation reaction. Four Cd(II) complexes, {[CdL2Cl2]·2DMF}n (1), [CdLI2]n (2), {[CdL2Br2]·4H2O}n (3), and {[CdL2(H2O)2](NO3)2·2CH3OH·8H2O}n (4), were synthesized and further characterized based on this ligand. Single-crystal structures show that the coordination-driven assembly of the bispyridyl ligand with Cd(II) salts bearing different counteranions can lead to multidimensional coordination polymers via a heterochiral self-discrimination process. Complex 1 exists as a one-dimensional (1D) looped chain polymer, and complex 2 exists as a 1D zigzag chain polymer. Complex 3 is a 2D grid coordination polymer, and complex 4 exists as a 3D framework polymer. Furthermore, the iodine sorption capacities of the four complexes were investigated in the solution of n-hexane and water as well as in the iodine steam. The dye sorption behaviors were investigated in water, which showed that complex 2 exhibited good adsorption for crystal violet (CV), while complex 4 had good adsorption capability toward direct yellow 4 (DY).

Abstract:Salicylaldehyde Schiff base is a kind of typical photochromism and thermochromism system with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic. In this work, three salicylaldehyde Schiff base derivatives of 1–3 were synthesized, which showed similar emissions but different photochromic/thermochromic properties in solid state. Only compound 1 exhibited reversible photo- and thermo-responsive performances in solid state according to the enol-keto tautomerism upon UV light irradiation and heating. Mechanism study showed that these different photochromic/thermochromic properties were controlled by the π-π stacking structure of adjacent molecules. This work provided a new perspective to understand the photochromic/thermochromic mechanism of salicylaldehyde Schiff base in solid state.

Abstract:A new ligand H2L with pyridine and salen moieties and its coordination polymers (CPs) [Mn(L)Cl]·DMF (1) and [Fe(L)Cl]·DMF (2) were synthesized and their photocatalytic activity for the conversion of CO2 into CO under visible-light irradiation was investigated. This is the first instance of pyridyl-salen-ligand based CPs for photocatalyzing CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Two novel 3D coordination polymer [Cd(L)(NO3)] (1) and [Zn2(L)4(H2O)9‧5H2O] (2) were synthesized by diffusion method with 4-(4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)benzenesulfonic acid (HL) and Cd(NO3)2·4H2O. And the complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffractometer, FT-IR spectra, elemental analyses, thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) and power X-ray diffractometer (PXRD), meanwhile solid fluorescent property of 1 and 2 have also been investigated. In complex 1, the deprotonated ligand L connected with Cd(II) metal each other to give a 3D structure, the neighboring 3D network can be connected by the C−H‧‧‧π to form a final two-fold interpenetrating supramolecular 3D structure, while 2 is 3D structure formed by non-covalent interaction. The fluorescence of complex 1 shows a remarkable red-shift in the luminescence of ligand HL, while 2 performs a 22 nm blue-shift, with respect to the free molecule. Furthermore, 1 can efficiently detect acetone molecules.

Abstract:A new flexible bowl-shaped zwitterionic complex, 1,1',1 "-(2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-triyl)tris(methylene)tris(4-carboxypyridinium) tribromide (H3LBr3) was designed and synthesized, which was subsequently used as an efficient ligand to construct four interesting coordination polymers of [Cu2Cl2L2(H2O)(2)]center dot Cl center dot Br center dot 4H(2)O (1), [ZnLBr]center dot NO3 center dot H2O (2), [Cd2L2Br2]center dot 2NO(3)center dot 4H(2)O (3), and [Cd2L2(Inic)(H2O)(4)(MeOH)(2)center dot Br center dot 2NO(3)center dot 3H(2)O (Inic = isonicotinlate, 4) by reaction of L ligand with corresponding metal salts or in the presence of isonicotinic acid. In these coordination polymers, L ligands link up metal nodes to form distinct linear networks. Two bowl mouths of two L ligands surround each other to form a ball-shaped building synthon in compounds 1 and 4, while the linear networks in 2 and 3 are in cylinder-shaped configurations. The luminescent spectra of L and compounds 1, 2, 3, and 4 suggested that the potential field around L ligand should be an important factor on the fluorescent emissions. The successful construction of the four novel coordination polymers based on the flexible zwitterionic L ligand should provide valuable information for further generation of novel topological networks with interesting properties.
Design and synthesis of diverse Cd2+/Zn2+/Cu2+ coordination polymers tuned by dicarboxylate and auxiliary 1,4-bis(pyridin-4-ylmethyl)piperazine ligands with luminescence and Hirshfeld surface analyses

Abstract:Four new coordination polymers, including 1D, 2D and 3D structures, were synthesized via a hydrothermal method using Cd2+/Zn2+/Cu2+ metal salts as nodes. These polymers were formed through self-assembly of four different dicarboxylic acid ligands, namely adamantane-1,3-dicarboxylic acid (H2adc), glutaric acid (H2glu), 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid (H2hip) and fumaric acid (H2fum), in conjunction with the auxiliary ligand [1,4-bis(pyridin-4-ylmethyl)piperazine (bpmp). The corresponding formulae are [Cd3(adc)2(bpmp)Cl2(H2O)2]n (1), {[Cd2(glu)2(bpmp)2(H2O)2]·8H2O·2CH3OH}n (2), [Zn(hip)(bpmp)(H2O)]n (3) and [Cu(fum)(bpmp)(H2O)2]n (4). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the Cd2+ centers in complex 1 all adopt a six-coordinate mode but two distinct {CdO2N2Cl2} and {CuO5Cl} units. The 3D network of complex 1 can be simplified to a binodal (4.6)-connected underlying net with the point symbol (3·42·5·62)4(32·62·72·88·10). Each Cd2+ cation in complex 2 adopts a seven-coordinate {CdO5N2} center, forming an asymmetric pentagonal bipyramidal coordination. Its stacking structure is formed by the interaction of hydrogen bonds between 2D supramolecular layers, with the adjacent layers exhibiting mirror symmetry. Each Zn2+ ion in complex 3 displays a {ZnO3N} four-coordinate unit. Its stacking structure is formed by one-dimensional [Zn(hip)(bpmp)(H2O)]n chains connected through hydrogen bonds. On the other hand, complex 4 features a Jahn-Teller distorted {CuO4N2} octahedral coordination. Subsequently, the thermal stability of these complexes was investigated. The solid-state fluorescence spectroscopy was employed to analyze complexes 1, 2 and 3. Additionally, a Hirshfeld surface analysis was performed on complex 3.

A series of coordination polymers based on 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid ligand: Synthesis, crystal structures, photo-catalysis and fluorescent sensing

Abstract:Five novel coordination polymers based on the 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (H2pdca), namely [Co(pdca)(bibp)0.5H2O)2]n (1), [Ni(pdca)(bibp)0.5(H2O)2]n (2), [Co(pdca)(bbibp)1.5]n (3), [Ni(pdca)(bbibp)1.5]n (4) and Zn(pdca)(bbibp)0.5]n (5) (bibp = 4,4′-bis(imidazole) biphenyl, bbibp = 4,4′-bis(benzoimidazo-l-yl)biphenyl and DMF = N, N'dimethylformamide) have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that all the complexes have 3D framework structures. In addition, the properties of the complexes for photo-catalytic degradation of organic dyes were discussed. Moreover, luminescence studies reveal that complex 5 shows strong luminescent property and could be a fluorescence sensor for the detection of Cr2O72−ion and antibiotics chloramphenicol. The Ksv values of 5 for Cr2O72− ion and chloramphenicol are 8.05 × 103 M−1 and 6.69 × 103 M−1, respectively. Meanwhile, the possible mechanism for the luminescence quenching of 5 has been discussed.

Mechanochromic Luminescence of Four Zn(II)/Cd(II) Complexes Based on Same Schiff-base Ligand with Different Coordination Modes

Abstract:Research based on derivatives of salicylaldehyde Schiff bases and their complexes has established that most of them crystallize predominantly in the enol form rather than the keto form. However, the self-assembly of 2-(4-aminophenyl)benzimidazole, 4-(diethylamino)salicylaldehyde, and metal salts could afford four Zn(II)/Cd(II) complexes in which the ligands exist in enol and keto forms with different coordination modes. Ligands of complexes 1 and 4 are in the neutral keto form (HLk), and ligands of complexes 2 and 3 are in the enol form (Le) as an anion. The crystal structure and fluorescence of complex 1 are temperature-dependent. At low temperature, the aromatic ring could rotate to increase the coplanarity of the ligand. All of them exhibit mechanochromic luminescence (MCL) properties. The emission peaks of crystals 1–4 as prepared are located at 637, 650, 542/612 and 643/615 nm and changed to 603, 602, 555, and 595 nm after grinding, respectively. The MCL mechanism of complexes 1, 3, and 4 could be attributed to the transformation from the crystalline to the amorphous state. In addition, the MCL mechanism of 2 could be mainly attributed to the self-absorption effect. A series of xerogels PAA-2 with variable and adjustable fluorescence were synthesized to further explain the effect of the molecular packing of 2.
