Abstract:Architected hydrogels are widely used in biomedicine, soft robots, and flexible electronics while still possess big challenges in strong toughness, and shape modeling. Here, inspired with the universal hydrogen bonding interactions in biological systems, a strain-induced microphase separation path toward achieving the printable, tough supramolecular polymer hydrogels by hydrogen bond engineering is developed. Specifically, it subtly designs and fabricates the poly (N-acryloylsemicarbazide-co-acrylic acid) hydrogels with high hydrogen bond energy by phase conversion induced hydrogen bond reconstruction. The resultant hydrogels exhibited the unique strain-induced microphase separation behavior, resulting in the excellent strong toughness with, for example, an ultimate stress of 9.1 +/- 0.3 MPa, strain levels of 1020 +/- 126%, toughness of 33.7 +/- 6.6 MJ m(-3), and fracture energy of 171.1 +/- 34.3 kJ m(-2). More importantly, the hydrogen bond engineered supramolecular hydrogels possess dynamic shape memory character, i.e shape fixing at low temperature while recovery after heating. As the proof of concept, the tailored hydrogel stents are readily manufactured by 3D printing, which showed good biocompatibility, load-bearing and drug elution, being beneficial for the biomedical applications. Abstract:Owing to flexible structural design and rapid prototyping manufacturing, 3D printable hydrogels with solid-like and fluid-like characters have emerged as a promising candidate for biomedical engineering, soft robotics, and flexible electronics. However, existing 3D printing of hydrogel place substantial constraints on hydrogel high-fidelity of the printed hydrogel complex structures due to the shape deformation and collapse caused by water evaporation. Herein, we propose a mixed solvent printing strategy followed with water dialysis to achieve vat photopolymerization 3D printing of high-fidelity hydrogel structure by restraining water evaporation. Concretely, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is introduced into the hydrogel ink as co-solvent to improve the anti-dehydration performance during 3D printing. The as-prepared gels are then transformed into hydrogels with good fidelity and excellent performance through solvent exchange and water dialysis. Enabled by these characteristics, various functional devices with complex structures are demonstrated with the present high-fidelity 3D printing of diverse hydrogels. The solvent assisted high-fidelity hydrogel 3D printing protocol combining with the compatibility to various high-performance hydrogels is believed to be promising for wearable devices, wound dressings, electronic skin, and intelligent robots.

Abstract:Three dimensional responsive structures have high value for the application of responsive hydrogels in various fields such as micro fluid control, tissue engineering and micro robot. Whereas various hydrogels with stimuli-responsive behaviors have been developed, designing and fabricating of the three dimensional responsive structures remain challenging. We develop a temperature responsive double network hydrogel with novel fabrication methods to assemble the complex three dimensional responsive structures. The shape changing behavior of the structures can be significantly increased by building blocks with various responsiveness. Mechanical instability is built into the structure with the proper design and enhance the performance of the structure. Finite element simulation are conducted to guide the design and investigate the responsive behavior of the hydrogel structures.

Abstract:AbstractFunctional soft materials, especially hydrogels have been widely developed to achieve various soft structures and machines. However, synthetic hydrogels commonly show formula‐dependent mechanical properties to fulfill the requirements of mechanical elasticity, stiffness, toughness, and tearing‐resistance for adapting to complex application scenario. Inspired by heterostructures and materials found in nature such as leaves and insect wings, a sequential photopolymerization process combined with site‐selective patterning exposure is reported to prepare programmable hydrogels with locally heterogeneous reinforcement skeletons, i.e., interpenetrating double networks. The heterogeneous interface between soft matrices and stiff skeletons is seamlessly interlocked through strong multiple hydrogen bonds induced by phase transition. By harnessing the size, shape, and distribution of the patterned stiff skeletons, a wide range of mechanical properties of hydrogels including modulus (0.32–5.92 MPa), toughness (0.15–18 kJ m−2), dissipated energy (1–100 kJ m−3), impact resistance, and mechanical anisotropy can be readily sculpted within one material system without needing design and optimization of the complex and elusive material formulation on demand. It is believed that this simple yet powerful method relying on heterogenous patterning would guide the development of functional hydrogel materials with programmable mechanical properties toward potential engineering applications, such as damping and flexible circuits.

Abstract:Hydrogels, as soft smart materials, have been widely used in the manufacturing of responsive biomedical structures. The manufacturing process of smart hydrogels is critical for their application; however, the production efficiency and precision of the extrusion-based 3D printing method for the fabrication of responsive structures of gelatin-based hydrogels have not been extensively studied. In this study, a gelatin-based shape memory hydrogel was designed and prepared with the addition of sodium alginate, tannic acid, and sodium iron ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid to improve its mechanical strength and photothermal properties. The printability of the hydrogel based on extrusion-based 3D printing was studied under different mixture ratios of hydrogel components. The appropriate printing parameters and formulas of the hydrogel were investigated to determine the structural strength of printing structures. Furthermore, the shape memory properties of printed structures under different printing conditions were studied. The biomedical applications of the shape memory behavior of printed structures were explored. The proposed hydrogels and manufacturing process allow the realization of 3D printed shape memory smart hydrogel structures and provide details and solutions for the design and integration of multifunctional hydrogels.

New Polymer Tensiometers: Measuring Matric Pressures Down to the Wilting Point

Abstract:Tensiometers are commonly used for measuring soil water matric pressures. Unfortunately, the water‐filled reservoir of conventional tensiometers limits their applicability to soil water matric pressures above approximately −0.085 MPa. Tensiometers filled with a polymer solution instead of water are able to measure a larger range of soil water matric pressures. We designed and constructed six prototype polymer tensiometers (previously called osmotic tensiometers) consisting of a wide‐range pressure transducer with a temperature sensor, a stainless steel casing, and a ceramic plate with a membrane preventing polymer leakage. A polymer chamber (0.1–2.2 cm3) was located between the pressure transducer and the plate. We tested the polymer tensiometers for long‐term operation, the effects of temperature, response times, and performance in a repacked sandy loam under laboratory conditions. Several months of continuous operation caused a gradual drop in the osmotic pressure, for which we developed a suitable correction. The osmotic potential of polymer solutions is temperature dependent, and requires calibration before installation. The response times to sudden and gradual changes in ambient temperature were found to be affected by polymer chamber height and polymer type. Practically useful response times (<0.2 d) are feasible, particularly for chambers shorter than 0.20 cm. We demonstrated the ability of the instrument to measure the range of soil water pressures in which plant roots are able to take up water (from 0 to −1.6 MPa), to regain pressure without user interference and to function properly for time periods of up to 1 yr.

Abstract:As the biocompatible materials, hydrogels have been widely used in three- dimensional (3D) bioprinting/organ printing to load cell for tissue engineering. It is important to precisely control hydrogels deposition during printing the mimic organ structures. However, the printability of hydrogels about printing parameters is seldom addressed. In this paper, we systemically investigated the printability of hydrogels from printing lines (one dimensional, 1D structures) to printing lattices/films (two dimensional, 2D structures) and printing 3D structures with a special attention to the accurate printing. After a series of experiments, we discovered the relationships between the important factors such as air pressure, feedrate, or even printing distance and the printing quality of the expected structures. Dumbbell shape was observed in the lattice structures printing due to the hydrogel diffuses at the intersection. Collapses and fusion of adjacent layer would result in the error accumulation at Z direction which was an important fact that could cause printing failure. Finally, we successfully demonstrated a 3D printing hydrogel scaffold through harmonize with all the parameters. The cell viability after printing was compared with the casting and the results showed that our bioprinting method almost had no extra damage to the cells.

Abstract:Extrusion-based 3D printing is a facile technology to construct complex structures of hydrogels, especially for tough hydrogels that have shown demonstrated potential in load-bearing materials and tissue engineering. However, 3D-printed hydrogels often possess mechanical properties that do not guarantee their usage in tissue-mimicking, load-bearing components, and motion sensors. This study proposes a novel strategy to construct high-strength and anisotropic Fe3+ cross-linked poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/sodium alginate double network hydrogels. The semi-flexible sodium alginate chains act as a "conformation regulator" to promote the formation of strong intermolecular interactions between polymer chains and lock the more extended conformation exerted by the pre-stretch, enabling the construction of 3D-printed hydrogel structures with high orientation. The equilibrated anisotropic hydrogel filaments with a water content of 50-60 wt.% exhibit outstanding mechanical properties (tensile strength: 9-44 MPa; elongation at break: 120-668%; Young's modulus: 7-62 MPa; toughness: 26-52 MJ m- 3). 3D-printed anisotropic hydrogel structures with high mechanical performance show demonstrated potential as loading-bearing structures and electrodes of flexible triboelectric nanogenerators for versatile human motion sensing.

Abstract:Facile preparation of architectures with precise control of shape deformations are crucial challenges due to the complicated process technique and harsh demands of the active materials. To address, the emerging 3D printing is employed to one‐step build programmable hydrogel architectures composed of only one type of material to perform various complex 3D shape deformations. The basic principle is that the secondary microstructures are introduced in the side of hydrogel strips and result in the bending or twisting deformations due to the asymmetrical swelling. With the merits of freeform design and fabrication, various hydrogel architectures including strips, sheets, and 3D objects are built with stereolithography‐based 3D printing, which realize the complex and controllable shape deformations via the programed microstructures on feature surfaces, such as bending, twisting, and even mimicking plant cirrus or petals. Most importantly, various responsive hydrogels are compatible to the approach, which can thus achieve stimuli‐reversible shape deformations. As proof‐of‐concept, a thermal‐responsive hydrogel gripper is readily realized to perform transportation by thermal‐induced grasping and releasing items. The facile 3D printing approach yet versatile in various hydrogels makes it broad opportunities for soft robotics, tissue engineering, actuators, and other devices where programmable shape deformations are required. Architectured hydrogels with complex and controllable shape deformations are realized by one‐step three‐dimensional (3D) printing. Flexibility in design, manufacturing, and materials of the approach allows to achieving various predictable and reversible 3D shapes that are deformed from 1D strips, 2D sheets, and 3D architectures. It will be promising in various areas including soft robotics, tissue engineering, actuators, and beyond.

Abstract:We report a dual ionic cross-linking approach for the preparation of double-network hydrogels with robustness, high strength, and toughness, sodium alginate/poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/Fe3+ (SA/P(AAm-co-AAc)/Fe3+), in a facile "one-step" dual ionic cross-linking method. We take advantage of the abundant carboxyl groups on alginate molecules and the copolymer chains and their high coordination capacity with multivalent metal ions to obtain hydrogels with high strength and toughness. The optimal SA/P(AAm-co-AAc)/Fe3+ (SA 2 wt % and AAc S mol %) hydrogels showed a remarkable mechanical performance with 3.24 MPa tensile strength and 1228% strain, both of which remained stable with 76% water content and were highly swelling resistant in an aqueous environment. The hydrogels possessed high fatigue resistance, self recovery, pH-triggered healing capability, shape memory, and reversible gel sol transition facilitated by pH regulation. Moreover, they show three-dimensional (3D) printing processability by properly adjusting the solution viscosity. The approach may provide a convenient way of obtaining hydrogels having high strength and toughness with a number of desirable properties for a broad range of biomedical applications.

Abstract:3D printing technology has been widely explored for the rapid design and fabrication of hydrogels, as required by complicated soft structures and devices. Here, a new 3D printing method is presented based on the rheology modifier of Carbomer for direct ink writing of various functional hydrogels. Carbomer is shown to be highly efficient in providing ideal rheological behaviors for multifunctional hydrogel inks, including double network hydrogels, magnetic hydrogels, temperature-sensitive hydrogels, and biogels, with a low dosage (at least 0.5% w/v) recorded. Besides the excellent printing performance, mechanical behaviors, and biocompatibility, the 3D printed multifunctional hydrogels enable various soft devices, including loadable webs, soft robots, 4D printed leaves, and hydrogel Petri dishes. Moreover, with its unprecedented capability, the Carbomer-based 3D printing method opens new avenues for bioprinting manufacturing and integrated hydrogel devices.

Abstract:3D printing hydrogels with a good resolution, diversified geometries, and a tunable mechanical performance is still a big challenge, which is mainly due to the low photo-reactivity of the high-water containing precursor and the low modulus of the photo-cured hydrogel. In the present work, an acryloylmorpholine - acrylic acid - PEG diacrylate drygel was firstly printed with a good fidelity and subsequently post- treated with an aqueous solution containing specific ions, during which hydration of the hydrophilic network and coordination between the carboxyl and ions occurred simultaneously. The obtained dual-crosslinked hydrogel combined a complex geometry and a good stretchability. This approach decoupled the printability and mechanical properties of the hydrogels. To furtherly show this advantage over conventional direct hydrogel 3D printing, ultrasoft hydrogel lattice structures which cannot be self-supported and purely ionic crosslinked hydrogels with a good self-weldability were demonstrated.

Abstract:3D printing alias additive manufacturing can transform 3D virtual models created by computer-aided design (CAD) into physical 3D objects in a layer-by-layer manner dispensing with conventional molding or machining. Since the incipiency, significant advancements have been achieved in understanding the process of 3D printing and the relationship of component, structure, property and application of the created objects. Because hydrogels are one of the most feasible classes of ink materials for 3D printing and this field has been rapidly advancing, this Review focuses on hydrogel designs and development of advanced hydrogel-based biomaterial inks and bioinks for 3D printing. It covers 3D printing techniques including laser printing (stereolithography, two-photon polymerization), extrusion printing (3D plotting, direct ink writing), inkjet printing, 3D bioprinting, 4D printing and 4D bioprinting. It provides a comprehensive overview and discussion of the tailorability of material, mechanical, physical, chemical and biological properties of hydrogels to enable advanced hydrogel designs for 3D printing. The range of hydrogel-forming polymers covered encompasses biopolymers, synthetic polymers, polymer blends, nanocomposites, functional polymers, and cell-laden systems. The representative biomedical applications selected demonstrate how hydrogel-based 3D printing is being exploited in tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, cancer research, in vitro disease modeling, high-throughput drug screening, surgical preparation, soft robotics and flexible wearable electronics. Incomparable by thermoplastics, thermosets, ceramics and metals, hydrogel-based 3D printing is playing a pivotal role in the design and creation of advanced functional (bio)systems in a customizable way. An outlook on future directions of hydrogel-based 3D printing is presented.

Abstract:3D printing of hydrogels with high intrinsic mechanical performance has significant applications in many fields yet has been proven to be a fundamental challenge. Here, 3D printing of ultrahigh strength hydrogels is achieved by constructing cross-linkingDPC networks based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan (CS). The hybrid ink with moderate rheology for direct ink writing is employed to manufacture complex hydrogel structures, first. Then, the cyclic freezing–thawing followed by sodium citrate solution soaking realize the first network of PVA crystallization and the second one of CS ionic interaction between amino and carboxyl groups. The optimized DPC hydrogel displays a tensile strength of 12.71 ± 1.32 MPa at a strain of 302.27 ± 15.70%, Young's modulus of 14.01 ± 1.35 MPa, and work of extension at fracture Wext of 22.10 ± 2.36 MJ m–3 because of the dominant energy dissipation of the stiff CS ionic network. Moreover, the tearing test supports that this DPC hydrogel possesses a high toughness of 9.92 ± 1.05 kJ m–2. This protocol can readily realize not only the hydrogel lattice, honeycomb, and spring, but also secondary-shaping hydrogel objects including whale, octopus, and butterfly via a local DPC strategy. The introduction of agar altered the rheological properties of the ink, such as increasing its viscosity to obtain a 3D printing structure with higher precision. The alginate chains were crosslinked by calcium ions, which connected different layers together and had good interface adhesion among layers in 3D printing constructs. In addition, after printing, the crosslinking of calcium alginate affected the swelling behavior and mechanical properties of printing gels. The width of extrusion gel stripes was close to the diameter of needle, demonstrating that the printing resolution is well controlled by minimizing the Barus effect of concentrated solution. Furthermore, the printed gel structures showed low cytotoxicity, indicating that these biocompatible 3D printed structures are promising substitutes for tissue engineering. Most importantly, soft polyacrylamide (PAAm) network was introduced into 3D printed CA/Ag hydrogels to toughen interfacial surfaces between adjacent stripes by combination of rigid calcium alginate network and soft PAAm network. These 3D printed hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties, high compatibility and high shape fidelity can be regarded as a potential candidate in bio-medical field.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, the development of hydrogels with high mechanical strength and toughness shows both fundamental and practical significances. It is challenging yet highly desired to process these tough hydrogels into structural elements with desired architectures, which are important for real applications. Three-dimensional (3D) printing, as an emerging additive manufacturing strategy, demonstrates great potentials for engineering tough hydrogels with versatile applications. This paper aims to review the recent progress on 3D printing of tough hydrogels and their relevant applications. We give an overview on the advantages and requirements of tough hydrogel systems for specific 3D printing technologies, followed by detailed summary of the network structures, mechanical performances, toughening mechanisms, and representative applications of the printed tough hydrogels. Finally, recent advances of 4D printing of tough hydrogels are discussed as a prospective direction to devise soft actuators and robots.
