Abstract:Long chain alkyl diols (LCDs) were studied to probe the ability of long chain diol index (LDI) as a sea surface temperature (SST) or temperature record at depth in the open northern South China Sea (SCS). The results showed that riverine LCDs, which may affect LDI-derived SSTs, was less significant due to the substantially low fractional abundance (generally < 20% and averaged 10%) of 1,15-C-32 diol in core sediments. The LDI-derived SSTs demonstrated a generally similar trend as SST records calculated from other proxies in nearby cores, suggesting that the LDI proxy can be a potential index to estimate ancient annual mean SST in the open northern SCS. The integration of novel data from the open sea with already published data in the coastal area would provide comprehensive information on the paleo-temperature evolution of the northern SCS.
Long-chain alkyl diols as indicators of local riverine input, temperature, and upwelling in a shelf south of the Yangtze River Estuary in the East China Sea

Abstract:Sedimentary processes on continental shelves are affected by complex interactions between a variety of riverine and oceanographic processes. In the shelf of the East China Sea (ECS) south of the Yangtze River estuary, we investigated source-to-sink processes relating to local riverine input as well as the effects of the Kuroshio intrusion by examining the distribution of long-chain alkyl diols in surface and core sediments. The results show that at present the main source of 1,14-diols is most likely diatoms belonging to the genus Proboscia. Most C32 1,15-diol is produced in situ in local rivers (rather than originating from the Yangtze River) and its distribution is mainly restricted to the front of local river mouths along the coast (water depth < 50 m) due to the hydrodynamism of the nearshore circulation system. Although the sources of the 1,13- and 1,15-diols remain uncertain, principal component analysis and their distribution patterns suggest that 1,14-, 1,13- and 1,15-diols have different biological sources, and that their producers may bloom in different seasons. The long chain diol index (LDI), a proxy for sea surface temperature (SST), was used in this study to reconstruct records of SST (with a bias towards autumn temperatures) in different parts of the ECS shelf, except for shallow water areas (water depth < 50 m), which are more affected by riverine input. The diol index (DI), based on 1,14-diols, worked well as a upwelling tracer in our study area, and our results show that upwelling prevails in the ECS shelf and that zones of strengthened upwelling are present to some extent at ~28.8°N–29.6°N and ~ 27.0°N–27.8°N during the summer due to the interaction of geomorphology, monsoons, and different water masses (i.e., the Kuroshio branch and the Yangtze River diluted water). The nutrient diol index (NDI) shows potential as an indicator for nutrient concentration in the surface waters in this study area during the warm season, but further work is needed.

Abstract:Long chain 1,14-diols have been widely studied in typical upwelling areas, but less investigated in open seas. In this study the 1,14-diols in a sediment core, covering a history between 42 ka and 12 ka, were studied to investigate their potential to indicate upper water stratification in the open northern South China Sea (SCS). Downcore records of 1,14-diol fractional abundances, diol index 1 (DI-1) and diol index 2 (DI-2) changed in parallel, with a prominent increase at -14.5 ka, likely corresponding with the Bolling warming event. This pattern is different from what has been observed in typical upwelling regimes, showing an insignificant relationship between DI-1 and DI-2. Moreover, these records showed a generally inverse variation pattern with records of primary productivity, further suggesting that they are not likely applicable as upwelling indicators in the study area. However, the 1,14-diol records changed positively with sea surface temperature (SST), as well as the difference between SST and subsurface-temperature, hence suggesting their potential to indicate upper water column stratification in the open SCS. This occurrence might be associated with the productivity of 1,14-diol precursor (i.e., Proboscia diatom), which is sensitive to the variation of mixed layer depth in oligotrophic open oceans and lacks of competitiveness relative to the more heavily silicified diatoms under normal Si replete upwelling conditions. Our result also suggested that the East Asian monsoon may have played an important role to modulate riverine terrigenous organic matter input to the study area.
The Identification of Long-Chain Diols and Keto-Ols in Site4B Sediment from the Pearl River Mouth Basin and Its Implication

Abstract:1,15-C30(ω16)and 1,15-C32(ω18)alkyl diols and keto-ols were identified in Site4Bsediment(65-300 cm below the seafloor)from the Pearl River Mouth Basin,and the total contents of diols and keto-ols were distributed from 0.026-4.373μg/g dry sediment and 0.005-1.549μg/g dry sediment,respectively.The carbon isotope compositions were substantially enriched in 13 C for 1,15-C30diol(δ13 C=-26.6‰±0.9‰)relative to the n-C30alkanol(δ13 C=-32.8‰±1.5‰),suggesting the absence of terrigenous higher plants.Either the absence of high abundance of sedimentary sterols relative to long-chain alkyl diols and keto-diols or the undetectability of these biomarkers in the surface sediment(0-65cm)indicates that eustigmatophyceae was not a potential source,since the location of Site4 Bsediment was on the continental slope where nutrition salinity is so poor that it is not suitable for algae.δ13 C of 1,15-C30diol(-24.6‰--28.4‰)is similar to that of short chain n-fatty acid(-25.5‰--28.6‰)in the sediment and revealed the same source as marine bacteria.In addition,the keto-ols have similar sources as diols or they are produces from different organisms but having strong couplings with each other;the keto-ols were not from the oxidization of the corresponding diols because the keto-ols ratios in the oxidized sediment(65-95cm)showed no significantly high values.The diol indices and keto-ol indices in the sediment having similar patterns,combined with the contents of these biomarkers,suggested the impact of the monsoon climate of South China Sea and the fresh water.Both the high diol indices and high diol concentration and the low diol indices and low diol concentration reflect the dominant impact of sea surface temperature,while the low diol indices and high diol concentration implied the major factor of increased intrusion of fresh water.
Assessing the Intercolony Δ18o Proxy Calibration in a Coral Microatoll and Its Implication for ENSO Reconstruction in the Northern South China Sea

Abstract:Massive Porites corals are widely used for paleoclimate reconstruction, however the potential of Porites coral microatoll δ18O as high-resolution archive of paleoclimate has only been recognized recently, and the systematic chemistry-climate relationship has yet to be well characterized in the western Pacific. In this study, we examined the reproducibility of microatoll δ18O records against two adjacent Porites corals from the Xisha Islands in the northern South China Sea (SCS) and evaluated the reliability of microatoll δ18O as a proxy for reconstructing regional climate and El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability. The seasonal to interannual variability in microatoll δ18O was primarily controlled by local sea surface temperature (SST), while the δ18O signal might be suppressed by sea surface salinity (SSS) variations on interannual timescale. Despite the overlapping coral δ18O records exhibited similar patterns of variability, the mean values were consistently offset by ~0.2‰ and the sensitivity of δ18O proxy to climate also varied across different coral colonies. The microatoll δ18O exhibited relatively high proxy-SST sensitivities and amplitude of the seasonal variabilities. These results suggested that intercolony δ18O variability was a significant source of uncertainty in coral-based paleoclimate reconstructions. Microatoll δ18O anomaly appeared to serve as a sensitive and relatively reliable proxy for ENSO variability, although the imprints of weak-to-moderate ENSO events could not be fully captured due to the complex relationship between the East Asian Monsoon and ENSO, as well as the local seawater salinity changes. This study further strengthened the evidence for microatoll as an alternate climate archive in the SCS and highlighted its potential in helping resolve poorly understood paleoclimate before instrumental observations.
The distribution of lipids biomarkers in the surface sediments of the Chukchi Sea and their implications

Abstract:Multi-biomarkers have been applied for the reconstruction of phytoplankton productivity and community structure.This study reports phytoplankton biomarker ratios in surface sediments sampled during the second China arctic expedition from the western Chukchi Sea in the summer of 2003 and evaluates their potential as community structure proxies.The total biomarkers(sum of brassicasterol,dinosterol,alkenones) in the surveyed area were 20~3 149 ng/g,the average value was 1 010 ng/g.The distributions of biomarkers also indicate the primary productivity in the Chukchi shelf was higher than the Chukchi plateau.The brassicasterol to dinosterol ratios for different stations have an obvious diversification,but all stations show the brassicasterol is in the ascendant.At the station of the Chukchi shelf,diatom is the mainly phytoplankton,the brassicasterol accounts for 42% to 74% of the total biomarkers,and the proportion of dinosterol is 17% to 37% in the total biomarkers.On the plateau,the dominant phytoplankton is also diatom,but the ratio of dinosterol and coccolithophore has a significantly.In the Canada Basin,dinosterol and coccolithophore are the dominant phytoplankton,diatom is not the predminant population and this result is in accord with phytoplankton distribution patterns obtained by other methods such as microscope.An important modern basis that these biomarkers can be used as proxies for community structure is prcvided,and it also suggests that this method can be used for community structure reconstruction for the sediment cores.
A preliminary discussion and evaluation of paleo-production proxies in the South China Sea

Abstract:The water column processes and preservation of biogenic components largely determines the possibility and credibility of utilizing geochemical indicators as paleo-environment proxies. In this paper, we presented organic carbon, opal and chlorine data of surface sediments to check if these parameters are significant or not to be sued as indicators of paleo-production (PP). Due to lower primary production and faster turnover rate in deep waters, the biological pump efficiency in the SCS was relative low. The stronger upper ocean advection leads to horizontal transportation of particulate matter. These factors as well as selective decomposition of organic matter during settling and sedimentation would affect reliability of some bulk PP proxies. Comparisons between sedimentary organic carbon, chlorine and opal, and the upwelling area and upper layer production indicate that organic carbon is a good paleo-PP, but chlorine and opal are not because sedimentary biogenic component is strongly affected by carbonate dissolution and lithogenic dilution in this oligotrophic, low PP marginal sea. Exceptions may be found in areas with a relative shallow water depth, stable sedimentation rate and good organic matter preservation, where chlorine and opal could also be used as good paleo-PP proxies.
Distribution and Sources of Organic Matter in Surface Sediments of the Northern Bering and Chukchi Seas by Using Bulk and Tetraether Proxies

Abstract:The organic matter (OM) preserved in Arctic Ocean sediments is of great importance to the global carbon budget. However, works that apply multiple proxies to determine the distribution and concentration of organic carbon (OC) in the surface sediments of the northern Bering and Chukchi Seas remain limited. Here a multiproxy approach based on bulk OM parameters and the branched vs. isoprenoid tetraether (BIT) index was used to investigate the distribution and sources of OM in the surface sediments of the northern Bering and Chukchi Seas. Binary and ternary mixing models were applied to trace the contribution of different OC sources to the total OC in the study area. The δ 13 C values of the sediments provided by the binary model showed that the proportion of terrestrial OC fell in the range of 27.4%−79.8% (46.2% on average). The BIT index returned the lowest fraction (4.8%−27.3%, 12.0% on average). The ternary mixing model was employed to determine the plant-, soil-, and marine-derived fractions of the total OM. The ternary model showed that 11.5%±6.3%, 31.4%±9.5%, and 57.1%±12.4% of OM in the sediment of the study area was derived from soil, plants, and marine sources, respectively. The differences in OM composition between the west and east sides of the Chukchi Sea were controlled by OM inputs from key water masses ( i.e ., Anadyr Water and Alaska Coastal Water), river discharge, and the nutrient supply from the Pacific inflow that supports marine productivity.
Seasonal and Spatial Variability of Sea Ice and Phytoplankton Biomarker Flux in the Chukchi Sea (western Arctic Ocean)

Abstract:Sediment traps were deployed at 870 m water-depth from August 2008 to September 2009 at station DM in the Chukchi Sea (western Arctic Ocean) in an area covered by sea ice in winter to determine seasonal fluxes of HBIs and phytoplankton sterols in order to improve our understanding of sea ice proxies. HBI-III fluxes and PIIIIP25 are for the first time documented in the Arctic Ocean to evaluate their significance for paleoclimate reconstructions. Highest mass fluxes were found from mid-July 2009 to September 2009 contrasting with low values during all other months (i.e., December 2008 to early July 2009). Indeed, during the winter months IP25 was not detected but increased by a factor of nine over summer 2009 reflecting sea ice algae and pelagic phytoplankton production at the sea ice edge. High HBIs and low sterol fluxes at the end of summer 2008 are consistent with the complete melting of sea ice and post-bloom conditions. We found that HBI-III was more abundant in the early stage of sea ice retreat that characterizes the marginal ice zone. These sea ice biomarkers were also measured in surface sediments across a wide range of sea ice cover in the western Arctic region. Higher IP25 values were found in the southeastern Chukchi Sea and decreased westwards where sea ice conditions are less severe. Stronger positive linear relationship were found between the sea ice proxy indexes PBIP25 and PIIIIP25 and spring sea ice concentrations than with IP25 in agreement with earlier findings from other Arctic and sub-Arctic regions.

Abstract:This study reports phytoplankton biomarker ratios in suspended particles from the continental shelf region of the East China Sea and evaluates their potential as community structure proxies.The brassicasterol(a diatom biomarker) to dinosterol(a dinoflagellate biomarker) ratios from 11 stations do not vary significantly with depth,indicating that these ratios are not controlled by degradation processes in the water column,but they mainly reflect the diatom to dinoflagellate ratios in the photic zone.The biomarker ratios reveal spatial trends with higher values away from the coast indicating more diatoms,generally in accordance with phytoplankton distribution patterns obtained by other methods.Our study provides modern field results supporting the use of these biomarkers as proxies for community structure.It also suggests that this method could be used for community structure reconstruction for the East China Sea.
Lipid biomarkers and organic matter carbon isotopes in estuarine sediments as proxies for evaluating seawater intrusion

Abstract:Coastal wetlands and estuarine sediments are characteristics of tide-dominated environments and retain a record of seawater intrusion and possibly sea-level changes. A variety of methods including the C/N ratio and δ13C of bulk organic matter in the sediment have been employed in estuarine studies, but they are generally non-specific indicators. Here we report using lipid biomarkers to evaluate the extent of seawater intrusion based on an estuary in eastern China, Xinyanggang. Along the river from the estuary mouth upstream to the freshwater head, the vegetation shifts quickly from salt-tolerant Spartina (C4) to the less tolerant reed Phragmites (C3), both of which have distinguished δ13C values and biomarker distribution. The δ13C values of particulate organic matter (POM) and surface sediment decreased from the estuary mouth upstream, indicating the reduced contributions from Spartina and marine phytoplankton to the POM and surface sediment and increased inputs from Phragmites. The C32/C30 alkanol and cholesterol/sitosterol ratio decreased in the surface sediments, faithfully recording the variations in the contributions from Spartina and Phragmites. The combination of biomarker distribution and organic matter δ13C in the sediments can be used as indicators for sea water intrusion into the estuary/river.
Detection and indication of 1,3,4-C 27–29 triol in the sediment of northern South China Sea

Abstract:After the detection of the 1,20,21-C 29 long-chain triol in some sediments and freshwater pteridophytes, in this study, a new homologous long-chain triol, 1,3,4-C 27–29 , is detected for the first time in the Site4B core sediment in the northern South China Sea. The hydroxyl location and length of the carbon chain of this newly discovered triol differ from those of 1,20,21-C 29 triol. The test results of its molecular distribution and individual carbon isotope reveal that 1,3,4-C 29 triol has a good correlation with n -C 26–30 even carbon-numbered long-chain fatty alcohols, with R 2 ( n =68) values of 0.905, 0.929 and 0.903, respectively, and its carbon isotope composition, at–32.3‰±1.9‰, is similar to that of n -C 26-30 , at–29.13‰±0.87‰,–32.98‰±1.28‰, and–32.98‰±1.28‰. 1,3,4-C 29 triol from the Site4B core sediment and terrigenous long-chain fatty alcohol ( n -C 26–34 ) show highly consistent distribution trends in the entire section; thus, the former could serve as a proxy indicator of the terrigenous input. Considering that the 1,20,21-C 29 triol in previous research belongs to Azolla , which are fresh water pteridophytes, the 1,3,4-C 27–29 triol identified in this study might have similar biogenetic derivation. Thus, determination of its biogenic area and growing environment could provide potential organic geochemical evidence supporting the terrigenous input and source in the northern South China Sea.
Alkanes, Compound-Specific Carbon Isotope Measures and Climate Variation During the Last Millennium from Varved Sediments of Lake Xiaolongwan, Northeast China

Abstract:Annually laminated sediments in Lake Xiaolongwan, northeast China, contain a suite of n-alkanes (C17–C33) with a strong odd over even carbon number predominance. Biomarker n-alkane proxies (average chain length, Paq ratio, grass/tree ratio, carbon preference index and compound-specific δ13C values) were used to reconstruct climate changes that occurred over the last millennium. Compound-specific δ13C values show large differences between the distinctive chain length groups of n-alkanes that originate from algae, aquatic macrophytes and terrestrial plants. Long-chain n-alkanes (C27–C33) are predominantly derived from leaf wax lipids in the forest. Variations in long-chain n-alkane δ13C values may mainly record water-use efficiency, inasmuch as the contribution from C4 plants is negligible in the Lake Xiaolongwan catchment. Short- and middle-chain n-alkanes are mainly from algae and aquatic plants. They are strongly depleted in 13C. This feature may be linked to a methane-derived, negative δ13C pool and lake overturn, which regulates dinoflagellate blooms. Parallel fluctuations are observed in δ13C27–31 values, Paq, and the grass/tree ratio throughout the record. Variations in δ13C27–31 values and Paq are in agreement with historical documents on summer and winter climate conditions. They support earlier suggestions that δ13C values in the long-chain n-alkanes and Paq may be useful indicators of effective precipitation or drought stress in this forested area. The δ13C27–31 index and Paq show distinct decadal variations. Periods with high δ13C27–31 values and a low Paq index correspond with the warm phases of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Values are reversed during PDO cool phases. At the decadal timescale, summer monsoon rainfall in northeast China over the last millennium may have been regulated mainly by the PDO.
Sources and Distribution of Sedimentary Organic Matter along the Northern Bering and Chukchi Seas

Abstract:In this study, lignin-derived phenols were used to determine the sources and distribution of sedimentary organic matter along the northern Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea of the Arctic Ocean. The lignin parameter syringyl/vanillyl (S/V) and cinnamyl/vanillyl (C/V) ratios are used to indicate vegetation sources; and the ratios of vanillic acid/vanillin, (Ad/Al)v and syringic acid/syringaldehyde, (Ad/Al)s are used as indicators of lignin diagenesis. Results showed the predominance of woody gymnosperm signal at the easternmost location in the northern Bering Sea, a mixture of refractory non-woody angiosperm and fresher gymnosperm tissues in the Chukchi Sea, and signal of fresher woody gymnosperm tissues in the northernmost locations in the Chukchi Sea. The lignin materials showed gradual increase in decomposition stage during transport along the northern Bering Sea. Hydrodynamic sorting process, which is the retention of coarser materials nearshore and transportation of finer particles farther offshore, most probably occurred along the east coast of the northern Bering Sea. In Chukchi Sea, the non-woody angiosperm tissues could have originated from the Canadian Arctic and gymnosperm tissues could be from the Russian Arctic side. The fresher materials in the northernmost Chukchi Sea could have been transported here via the ice-rafting process. Detection of fresh lignin materials and the occurrence of lignin decomposition mean that this region could be sensitive to the impact of climate change.
Optical and Molecular Signatures of Dissolved Organic Matter Reflect Anthropogenic Influence in a Coastal River, Northeast China

Abstract:Sources and molecular composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in coastal rivers have been tightly linked with its reactivity and fate, thus influencing element and nutrient cycling. The DOM in coastal rivers is usually sourced from both terrestrial and marine inputs, with further complication by anthropogenic activities, which is less understood in coastal rivers located near populated industrial regions. In this study, DOM in a typical anthropogenically influenced coastal river, Daliao River, was analyzed for optical analyses and for molecular composition via Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) to give a better scope of composition and sources of DOM. The DOM was enriched in autochthonous and anthropogenic inputs at upstream sites according to high chlorophyll a concentrations, strong protein-like fluorescence, and nonoxygen heteroatomic CHOS formulae (19-24% by relative peak intensity) detected by FT-ICR MS analysis. A series of surfactant-like formulae, indicative of wastewater inputs, were identified and showed a decreasing trend from upstream to the river mouth. Compared with large world rivers, the DOM of Daliao River is characterized by higher abundances of heteroatomic (excluding O) formulae and molecular lability, which is likely caused by strong autochthonous and anthropogenic inputs. In general, we demonstrate that in addition to optical properties, the molecular composition can assess the specific anthropogenic imprints and molecular lability of DOM, which is essential for constraining sources and identifying processes during the transit of DOM from the river to estuary with increasing urbanization and industrialization.
Long-chain 1,3-diols in a land-estuary-sea continuum: Tracers for soil organic matter

Abstract:The fate of terrestrial organic matter (OM) in land-sea transition is critical to earth surface carbon cycling, which needs to be tracked with proper proxies. Existing proxies are mostly derived from terrestrial higher plants, whereas proxies from soil bacteria, another critical soil OM producers, are scarce. Here, we investigate the potential of a suite of C 22–28 even carbon-numbered 1,3-diols as a soil bacterial tracer, and hence as soil OM proxy, using a range of biological (plants and litters) and natural (soils, suspended particulate matters (SPMs) and sediments) materials in a land-estuary-sea continuum in tropical South China. The 1,3-diols are ubiquitous in soils, SPMs and sediments but not detected in living plants and leaf litters, thus ruling out plant origin of these diols. In a soil profile, C 22–26 1,3-diols are abundant in the upper high‐oxygen layers but lacking in the deeper low-oxygen layers, implying their aerobic bacterial origin. By contrast, C 28 1,3-diol appears only in low-oxygen layers, perhaps due mainly to its anaerobic bacterial origin. In the estuary, the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of 1,3-diols take the characteristics of their terrigenous origin, exhibiting higher abundances in wet season-collected SPMs and overall decreasing contents with increasing salinities. The estuarine SPMs and surface sediments show higher %C 28 1,3-diol than surface sediments on the coastal shelf, implying that the former receive more OM contribution from the deep soils. This phenomenon is explained to reflect a stronger soil erosion into the deep in the pre-sampling year as recorded by estuarine materials, and a multi-year mean, weaker erosion as recorded by coastal surface sediments. Our study demonstrates that 1,3-diols are applicable as a tracer for soil OM input from land biosphere to marine realm in tropical South China, but their suitability in broad other settings should be assessed especially in those that may encounter with plant-derived 1,3-diols.

Alcohol Compounds in Azolla Imbricata and Potential Source Implication for Marine Sediments

Abstract:This study investigated the composition of long-chain alkyl diols,triols,sec-alcohols,hydroxyl acids,and other hydroxylated compounds in Azolla imbricata and compared the organic alcohol components of Azolla filiculoides,Azolla microphylla,and South China Sea(SCS)sediments in order to investigate the possible indication of Azolla being the biological source of diols and triols in SCS sediment.Large amounts of diols,monohydroxy acids,and sec-alcohols with internal hydroxy groups atω20 were detected in the three types of Azolla.Among these,1,ω20-diol andω20-hydroxy acid exhibited strong even-odd predominance distribution,whereasω20-sec-alcohol exhibited strong odd-even predominance distribution.In addition,small amounts of diols,triols,and dihydroxy acids with internal hydroxy groups at 9,10 orω9,ω10 were detected,among which the chain length of C 29 was predominate.Compounds having similar structures as those in Azolla reflected a similar biosynthetic pathway:ω20-hydroxy acid exhibiting even-odd predominance distribution is decarboxylated toω20-sec-alcohol exhibiting odd-even predominance distribution and converted to 1,ω20-diol with even-odd predominance distribution by acyl reduction;ω9,ω10-hydroxy acid is converted to 1,20,21(1,ω9,ω10)-triol by acyl reduction,and then converted to 9,10-diol by hydrogenation and dehydration.The alcohol components in A imbricata were clearly not the biological source of 1,13/1,14/1,15-C 28,30,32 diols and 1,3,4-C 27-29 triols in the SCS sediment.Certain marine diatoms might be the source of 1,14-C 28,30 diol in inshore sediment,but the biological source of diols and triols in the SCS sediment requires further investigation.

Abstract:Long chain alkenones occur widely in lacustrine settings and their compositions are potential proxies for reconstructing terrestrial paleoclimatological and paleoenvironmental changes. However, factors influencing their occurrence, abundance, compositional pattern and unsaturation indices are not well understood. Here we investigated the alkenones in surface sediments from 19 lakes in northwestern China as well as potential environmental factors. Of the lakes, 12 contain long chain alkenones, 3 have the isomeric C-37:3 alkenone and 3 have very low abundance of alkenones. Our results show that salinity has a substantial influence on the occurrence, concentration and compositional pattern. Most of the compositions are dominated by tri-unsaturated compounds, with C-38 methyl ketones absent. The predominance of C-37:4 and the occurrence of a C-37:3 isomer are suggested to be responses to low salinity as both are only found in the three alkenone-containing freshwater lakes. The proportion of C-37:4 varies by up to 50% and shows a negative relationship with salinity within the surveyed region. An arched relationship of alkenone content and salinity is apparent, with no or very low contents of alkenones in freshwater (salinity < 3 g/L) and hypersaline (> 100 g/L) environments. The U-37(K') index is suggested to be a better terrestrial temperature proxy than U-37(K) as U-37(K') values from lakes containing elevated alkenone content are all within the ranges of published U-37(K')-temperature calibrations, and U-37(K) values show a weak positive relationship with salinity. Asian Winter Monsoon Imprint on the Water Column Structure at the Northern South China Sea Coast

Abstract:Coastal regions of the northern South China Sea (SCS) strongly interact with the Asian monsoon circulation (AMC). Thus, variations of sea surface temperature (SST) here are newly suggested to document AMC changes in an effective manner, but additional physical parameters of oceanic conditions, probably also in relation to the AMC system, remain poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) from a well-dated sediment core YJ, retrieved at the northern SCS coast, to further scrutinize the intrinsic response of water column to winter AMC strength. It shows that within the time frame of past ∼1,000 years, the tetraether index of lipids with 86 carbon atoms ( TEX 86 ) and published alkenone ( U 37 K ′ ) temperature records together confirm a reduced thermal gradient during the Little Ice Age (LIA), in comparison to that during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA). Considering concurrent variations of the branched and isoprenoid tetraether (BIT) and the ratio of archaeol to caldarchaeol (ACE), for example, with decreased values (<∼0.3) for the former and relatively high values for the latter at the LIA, indicative of stratification and salinity changes, respectively, these multiple lines of evidence thereby call for well mixing of onsite water at site YJ correspondingly. Our results suggest that winter AMC strength is a critical factor for mixing subsurface waters and modifying thermal/saline conditions at the northern SCS coasts through the last millennium and also, perhaps, on longer timescales.
Multiple lipid biomarkers record organic matter sources and paleoenvironmental changes in the East China Sea coast over the past 160 years

Abstract:The use of lipid biomarkers as paleoenvironmental proxies relies on an accurate assessment of their organic matter (OM) sources. In this study, we analyzed multiple lipids in core sediments recovered from the Zhejiang–Fujian coastal mud area to provide a 160-year record of OM input to the East China Sea (ECS) coastal sediments and to reconstruct paleoenvironmental conditions over this interval. The molecular composition of the samples was characterized by a mixture of natural lipids, particularly those derived from terrestrial vascular plants, marine/riverine plankton and macrophytes, and bacteria. The sources of some lipid components were ambiguous/mixed as they were potentially derived from multiple precursor organisms and because of limitations associated with modern survey techniques. There is evidence that early diagenesis caused the preferential degradation of labile aquatic lipids and that the degradation of terrestrial lipids was more severe when subjected to complex horizontal–vertical transportation processes associated with deposition, resuspension, and redeposition. These processes may have led to an enhanced terrestrial OM signal in the normal ( n)-alkane and n-alkanol records, which is at odds with, for example, those of the n-fatty acids, hopanoids, steranes, and sterols, which suggest a dominant marine OM source. Furthermore, we conclude that the occurrence of multiple sources, selective diagenesis, and test error has led to the distortion of redox and maturity indicators based on evidence from pristane-to-phytane (Pr/Ph) ratios and sterane/hopane indices in century scale. Overall, the phytol record suggests an increase in productivity after the early 20th century. Correspondingly, the diatom lipid biomarker records (based on C 25 highly branched isoprenoid alkenes and C 18:1ω9 fatty acids) reveal a fluctuating but overall increasing diatom productivity after the early 20th century, which coincides with a decreased proportion of the contribution from diatoms relative to that of total phytoplankton. This is believed to correspond to natural environmental changes, as well as anthropogenic impact.
