Abstract:Arc-routing problems (ARPs) aim to determine the least-cost vehicle routes of a specified arc subset in a graph. The split-delivery capacitated arc-routing problem (SDCARP) generalizes conventional ARPs by allowing an arc to be serviced by more than one vehicle. Because of its great complexity, the existing approaches for solving SDCARP are scant and most of them are meta-heuristics. In this paper, we analyze the characteristics of SDCARP solution structures. Then we devise a forest-based tabu search algorithm, which involves several forest-based neighborhood operators, for seeking the optimal solution. By using our method, the search space can be significantly reduced. The computational results demonstrate that our approach outperforms previous methods and is able to improve several state-of-the-art solutions on SDCARP benchmark instances.

Abstract:The split-delivery vehicle routing problem (SDVRP) is a natural extension of the classical vehicle routing problem (VRP) that allows the same customer to be served by more than one vehicle. This problem is a very challenging combinatorial optimization problem and has attracted much academic attention. To solve it, most of the literature articles adopted heuristic approaches in which the solution is represented by a set of delivery patterns, and the search operators were derived from the traditional VRP operators. Differently, our approach employs the combination of a set of routes and a forest to represent the solution. Several forest-based operators are accordingly introduced. We integrate the new operators into a simple tabu search framework and then demonstrate the efficiency of our approach by conducting experiments on existing benchmark instances.

Abstract:We study the capacitated arc routing problem in the state-space-time network. A multi-commodity network flow model is formulated in the state-space-time network. Two Lagrangian relaxation-based decomposition methods are developed to tackle this problem. By dualizing the coupling constraints to the objective function, the Lagrangian relaxed problem (LR) can be decomposed into several routing subproblems in the state-space-time network. Then we extend quadratic penalty terms to the LR and obtain an augmented Lagrangian relaxed problem (ALR). By applying the alternating direction method of multipliers and linearization techniques, we decompose the ALR into a sequence of routing subproblems. We solve these subproblems of LR and ALR by a time-dependent dynamic programming algorithm. Feasible solutions are produced according to the result of the LR or ALR. The Lagrangian multipliers are updated by the subgradient optimization method. We implement the proposed methods in three networks, showing that the ALR-based method has better performance.

Abstract:The vehicle routing problem (VRP) has a wide range of applications in the field of logistics distribution. In order to reduce the cost of logistics distribution, the distance-constrained and capacitated VRP with split deliveries by order (DCVRPSDO) was studied. We show that the customer demand, which can't be split in the classical VRP model, can only be discrete split deliveries by order. A model of double objective programming is constructed by taking the minimum number of vehicles used and minimum vehicle traveling cost as the first and the second objective, respectively. This approach contains a series of constraints, such as single depot, single vehicle type, distance-constrained and load capacity limit, split delivery by order, etc. DCVRPSDO is a new type of VRP. A new tabu search algorithm is designed to solve the problem and the examples testing show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. This paper focuses on constructing a double objective mathematical programming model for DCVRPSDO and designing an adaptive tabu search algorithm (ATSA) with good performance to solving the problem. The performance of the ATSA is improved by adding some strategies into the search process, including: (a) a strategy of discrete split deliveries by order is used to split the customer demand; (b) a multi-neighborhood structure is designed to enhance the ability of global optimization;
An Improved Multi-objective Framework for the Rich Arc Routing Problem

Abstract:This article introduces a Rich Arc Routing Problem (RARP). Required arcs are partitioned into given clusters, and each cluster shall be serviced for prescribed times during the planning horizon. There is a time limit that restricts the visits that can be performed in a single day. Each vehicle has to stop at one of intermediate facilities before the end of the specific hours per day. Accordingly, several days may be necessary to complete all tasks, and paths traveled by different vehicles on the same day shall not overlap. The RARP consists of finding a set of routes with (i) the minimum total distance, (ii) the minimum number of vehicles, (iii) the minimum pure working days, and (iv ) the temporal service time interval consistency of each cluster. Recently, a Local-Ideal-Points based Autonomous Space Decomposition (LIP-ASD) algorithm has been demonstrated to be a competitive multi-objective framework. However, randomly generating an initial population in each decomposed space decreases the convergence speed of LIP-ASD. In addition, retaining only one individual preserved in each sub-space limits population diversity. In response to these issues, an Improved LIP-ASD (I-LIP-ASD) for RARP is developed. The two improvements of the proposed algorithm are as follows: (i) the initial population in the current sub-space is generated by combining existing nondominated individuals, and (ii) all nondominated solutions will be output from the evolved population in each decomposed sub-space. Finally, we conduct a series of experiments over converted capacitated arc routing problem instances, as well as analyze them under a real-world case to evaluate and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution algorithm.

A Solution Procedure for the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem with Three-Dimensional Loading Constraints in Online Supermarket Delivery

Abstract:Due to the very large number of online supermarket’s orders, it is necessary to consider loading constraints of the packages while arranging vehicle schemes. It is expected to greatly improve the loading rate and reduce distribution costs. Aiming at the delivery problem from supermarket’s distribution center to the delivery stations, this paper studies the three dimensional loading constrained vehicle routing problem. First of all, according to the actual conditions of packing problem, it designs heuristic rules for packing activity and calculation formulation for residual loading capacity, based on which a three dimensional loading is proposed. Combined with the loading algorithm, it then presents the initial vehicle scheme generation measure and designs optimization method of schemes. Finally, it constructs an experimental example to validate the proposed solution procedure. The result shows the validity of the procedure for vehicle routing problem with loading constraints of large number of packages.

Abstract:This paper addresses a new multi-commodity unpaired pickup and delivery vehicle routing problem in which each vehicle is allowed to visit each customer more than once for both pickup and delivery of each commodity. It is a complex variant of the classical capacitated vehicle routing problem and comes from resource transfer among different plants in a distributed manufacturing environment. Notably, the pairing decisions of pickup and delivery for each commodity and the routing decisions among customers are interdependent, and they need to be made simultaneously and collaboratively. Firstly, a mixed integer programming model is developed, and then new valid inequalities are derived to improve the linear programming relaxation. Afterwards, a branch-and-cut algorithm is proposed by exploring different branching strategies and tailored separation algorithms. Computational results based on real-case instances from an automobile manufacturing company demonstrate that the costs are considerably reduced by considering the multiple visits compared to the single visit of each customer. In addition, our proposed branch-and-cut algorithm outperforms a manual solution method adopted by the company in practice and two solution methods in the literature. Furthermore, two adaptations of our branch-and-cut algorithm also perform better than two state-of-the-art algorithms in solving two closely-related problems in terms of solution quality and computation time. Sensitivity analyses with respect to vehicle capacity, vehicle duration, and vehicle speed are conducted to derive several valuable managerial insights.

Abstract:Abstract To address the realistic problem of seriously reducing distribution efficiency and increasing distribution cost caused by road traffic congestion, this paper constructs a time-dependent speed describing vehicle travel speed and road traffic flow by simulating the change of urban traffic flow, to establish a vehicle route problem model considering traffic flow with distribution cost and customer satisfaction as optimization objectives. To solve this problem, a hyper-heuristic algorithm based on tabu search is designed in this paper, in which the underlying search operator is selected more efficiently by a high-level heuristic strategy. In addition, the correctness of the model and the effectiveness of the algorithm are verified by conducting simulation experiments on several benchmark sets. Experiment results are shown as the travel speed of the vehicle increases, the average customer satisfaction in lc1-type instances increases to 0.94. And the impact of urban traffic changes on logistics costs and customer satisfaction is further analyzed.

Abstract:In the capacitated arc routing problem with multiple centers (M-CARP) the objective is to find routes starting from the given depots or centers such that each required arc is served, capacity (and usually additional) constraints are satisfied and total travel cost is minimized. In this paper we consider a heuristic transformation of the M-CARP into a multiple center capacitated minimum spanning tree problem with arc constraints, that we call arc-constrained CMST. An algorithm for determining initial feasible solutions as well as an improvement procedure for this problem are described and the “re-translation” of CMST solutions into the CARP context is explained. It is shown that the objective function value of the obtained CARP solution is easily derived from the respective value of the corresponding heuristic CMST solution. Furthermore, the possibility of including side constraints and the consideration of additional objective functions is discussed. Computations on real-world benchmark problems compare the results of the tabu search and simulated annealing metastrategies embedded in the improvement procedure.

Abstract:The paper focuses on a variant of hub location routeing problem arising in the design of intra-city express service networks, named as capacitated single allocation hub location routeing problem, in which each non-hub node should be served by exactly one hub, and both hub capacity and vehicle capacity are considered. A new mixed-integer programming formulation for the problem is provided, and a solution algorithm is developed on the basis of the column generation scheme to exactly solve the problem for the first time. The pricing subproblem is solved by a bidirectional labelling algorithm, and the master problem is strengthened by valid inequalities. Numerical experiments are conducted on the instances generated from the Australian Post dataset to test the performance of the model and the developed algorithm. Computational results prove that the algorithm outperforms the CPLEX and is able to provide optimal solutions for instances with up to 35 non-hub nodes and high-quality solutions for instances with 40 non-hub nodes within reasonable computational time, which indicates the feasibility and efficiency of the model and algorithm proposed.

A novel dual-stage algorithm for capacitated arc routing problems with time-dependent service costs

Abstract:This paper focuses on solving the capacitated arc routing problem with time-dependent service costs (CARPTDSC), which is motivated by winter gritting applications. In the current literature, exact algorithms designed for CARPTDSC can only handle small-scale instances, while heuristic algorithms fail to obtain high-quality solutions. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel dual-stage algorithm, called MAENS-GN, that consists of a routing stage and a vehicle departure time optimization stage. The former obtains the routing plan, while the the latter determines the vehicle departure time. Importantly, existing literature often ignores the characteristic information contained in the relationship between the route cost and the vehicle departure time. The most significant innovation in this paper lies in the exploitation of this characteristic information during the vehicle departure time optimization stage. Specifically, we conduct a detailed analysis of this relationship under various scenarios and employ tailored methods to obtain the (approximately) optimal vehicle departure time. Furthermore, we propose an improved initialization strategy that considers time-dependent characteristics to achieve better solution quality. In addition to the modified benchmark test sets, we also experiment on a real-world test set. Experimental results demonstrate that MAENS-GN can obtain high-quality solutions on both small-scale and larger-scale instances of CARPTDSC.

Matheuristic for a Two-Echelon Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem with Environmental Considerations in City Logistics Service

Abstract:This paper addresses a two-echelon capacitated vehicle routing problem (2E-CVRP) with environmental considerations (2E-CVRP-E). A new arc-and-route-based mathematical model is constructed to formulate the problem in which the sum of drivers' wage, fuel cost, and handling cost is minimized. A matheuristic based on variable neighborhood search (VNS) and integer programming is designed to solve the 2E-CVRP-E. The integer programming in the matheuristic is used as a post-optimization technique to find better solutions missed by the VNS algorithm or to construct the least-cost first-level routes. To validate its effectiveness, the matheuristic first performs tests on 2E-CVRP instances and improves 13 current best-known solutions out of 234 instances. Then it performs tests on the 2E-CVRP-E instances modified from the 2E-CVRP. For 2E-CVRP-E instances, the total cost of the best solution found by the matheuristic is smaller than that of the best-known 2E-CVRP solution with an average relative gap of 6.37%. Computational results prove that the proposed matheuristic can find high-quality solutions for the 2E-CVRP and the 2E-CVRP-E.

Abstract:In this study, we focus on the routing and scheduling of multi-carriage transit trains for airport baggage transit. It is modeled as a vehicle routing problem with cross-route dependencies caused by side constraints, including split demand, multiple trips per vehicle, and simultaneous pickup and delivery. Besides, some other practical constraints such as time windows, baggage release time, baggage waiting time, and priority of unloading are taken into account in the implementation. The joint consideration of these characteristics brings a unique challenge to determine the start time of each service for aircraft due to the interdependencies across vehicle routes. Thus, we adopt topological sort to construct the directed acyclic graph and then derive the flight service time. Based on that, we develop an Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS) algorithm. Moreover, in order to examine the moves quickly, a two-stage solution evaluation method is proposed, where the single tour is checked based on the segment-based evaluation method in the first stage, and the complete solution is checked using the topological sort in the second stage. The results demonstrate the superiority of our algorithm in computational time and solution quality. In addition, some insightful conclusions are drawn through detailed analyses.

Abstract:This paper studies a dynamic capacitated arc routing problem for battery replacement in an e-bike sharing system, where workers replace batteries for underpowered e-bikes along street segments dynamically. The objective is to replace as many batteries as possible and minimize pickup failures. The temporal dependency of the routing decisions, the conflict of the workers' operations, and the stochastic and dynamic nature of user demands all make this a difficult problem. To cope with these difficulties, a "Partition-First, Route-Second" bi-level solution framework is adopted to describe the problem in two different time scales. On the large time scale, a spatiotemporal partitioning method, which divides the road network into nonoverlapping subzones, is proposed to decompose the problem. On the small time scale, this paper models the routing decision process of individual worker as a Markov Decision Process. We adopt a lookahead policy that simulates future information and decisions over some horizons to evaluate the long-term influence of current feasible decisions. A Monte Carlo Tree Search algorithm is also used to improve the simulation efficiency. By performing numerical computation experiments on a test case study and comparing with some benchmarking policies, we demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the suggested method.

Abstract:This study addresses the open vehicle routing problem with split deliveries, a variant of the classical vehicle routing problem that allows open routes and partitioned deliveries for customers (i.e., multiple vehicles may serve one customer). This approach may be beneficial for companies interested in reducing their logistics and distribution costs. This study is motivated by a company in the pharmaceutical industry, that seeks to explore the possibility of splitting their deliveries to improve quality indicators related to on-time deliveries and customer satisfaction. Two mixed-integer formulations of the problem are proposed. Additionally, a cutting-plane method is designed to improve the optimization performance. Computational experiments were conducted to validate the performance of the formulations. The second formulation effectiveness was confirmed by providing optimal solutions for instances of up to 30 nodes in a reasonable computational time. The incorporation of the cutting-plane method improves performance with a substantial reduction in the GAP. In the case study, this new approach shows its effectiveness in economic terms by providing savings of up to 20% of the current distribution costs.

A Multi-population Integrated Approach for Capacitated Location Routing

Abstract:The capacitated location-routing problem involves determining the depots from a set of candidate capacitated depot locations and finding the required routes from the selected depots to serve a set of customers whereas minimizing a cost function that includes the cost of opening the chosen depots, the fixed utilization cost per vehicle used, and the total cost (distance) of the routes. This paper presents a multi-population integrated framework in which a multi-depot edge assembly crossover generates promising offspring solutions from the perspective of both depot location and route edge assembly. The method includes an effective neighborhood-based local search, a feasibility-restoring procedure and a diversification-oriented mutation. Of particular interest is the multi-population scheme which organizes the population into multiple subpopulations based on depot configurations. Extensive experiments on 281 benchmark instances from the literature show that the algorithm performs remarkably well, by improving 101 best-known results (new upper bounds) and matching 84 best-known results. Additional experiments are presented to gain insight into the role of the key elements of the algorithm.

Abstract:The capacitated arc routing problem (CARP) is a challenging combinatorial optimization problem abstracted from many real-world applications, such as waste collection, road gritting, and mail delivery. However, few studies considered dynamic changes during the vehicles’ service, which can cause the original schedule infeasible or obsolete. The few existing studies are limited by the dynamic scenarios considered, and by overly complicated algorithms that are unable to benefit from the wealth of contributions provided by the existing CARP literature. In this article, we first provide a mathematical formulation of dynamic CARP (DCARP) and design a simulation system that is able to consider dynamic events while a routing solution is already partially executed. We then propose a novel framework which can benefit from the existing static CARP optimization algorithms so that they could be used to handle DCARP instances. The framework is very flexible. In response to a dynamic event, it can use either a simple restart strategy or a sequence transfer strategy that benefits from the past optimization experience. Empirical studies have been conducted on a wide range of DCARP instances to evaluate our proposed framework. The results show that the proposed framework significantly improves over state-of-the-art dynamic optimization algorithms.

Abstract:This paper addresses a recently practical combinatorial problem named Three-Dimensional Loading Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem, which combines three-dimensional loading problem and vehicle routing problem in distribution logistics. The problem requires a combinatorial optimization of a feasible loading and successive routing of vehicles to satisfy customer demands, where all vehicles must start and finish at a central depot. The goal of this combinatorial problem is to minimize the total transportation cost while serving customers. Despite its clearly practical significance in the real world distribution management, for its high combinatorial complexity, published papers on this problem in literature are very limited. We present a hybrid approach which combines Honey Bee Mating Optimization and six loading heuristics, one for vehicle routing and the other for three-dimensional loading, to solve the integrated problem. We computationally evaluate this hybrid approach on all publicly available test instances, and obtain new best solutions for several scenarios.

Abstract:Meta-heuristic algorithms, especially evolutionary algorithms, have been frequently used to find near optimal solutions to combinatorial optimization problems. The evaluation of such algorithms is often conducted through comparisons with other algorithms on a set of benchmark problems. However, even if one algorithm is the best among all those compared, it still has difficulties in determining the true quality of the solutions found because the true optima are unknown, especially in dynamic environments. It would be desirable to evaluate algorithms not only relatively through comparisons with others, but also in absolute terms by estimating their quality compared to the true global optima. Unfortunately, true global optima are normally unknown or hard to find since the problems being addressed are NP-hard. In this paper, instead of using true global optima, lower bounds are derived to carry out an objective evaluation of the solution quality. In particular, the first approach capable of deriving a lower bound for dynamic capacitated arc routing problem (DCARP) instances is proposed, and two optimization algorithms for DCARP are evaluated based on such a lower bound approach. An effective graph pruning strategy is introduced to reduce the time complexity of our proposed approach. Our experiments demonstrate that our approach provides tight lower bounds for small DCARP instances. Two optimization algorithms are evaluated on a set of DCARP instances through the derived lower bounds in our experimental studies, and the results reveal that the algorithms still have room for improvement for large complex instances.

Abstract:The multicommodity network-flow model concerns routing of a number of commodities through a capacitated network at minimal cost.In the basic model,it is assumed that for each commodity,the flow can be routed on any path connecting its origin and its destination.While in some realistic problem,there are some restrictions on the routing paths,e.g.time-delay or reliability requirements.It considers the fixed-charge network design with this side constraint on paths,and provide an efficient heuristic methods-tabu search algorithm to solve this kind of model,which combines the revised simplex with column generation and the shortest path algorithm to produce a search that explores the space of the continuous path flow variables.
