Abstract:Although significant advances have been made in supramolecular tubules, reversible polymerization in the tubular walls while maintaining their intact structure remains a great challenge. Here, reversible helical supramolecular polymerization of stacked toroids is reported, while maintaining tubular structures in aqueous solution. At room temperature, the tubules consist of discrete toroid stackings with hydrophobic interior. Upon heating, the tubules based on toroid stackings undergo a reversible helical supramolecular polymerization to transform into helical tubules by interconnecting between spirally open toroids. The helical polymerization arises from a tilting transition of the closed toroids that transform into spirally open toroids driven by the thermal dehydration of a hydrophilic oligoether dendron surrounding the toroid frameworks.
Polar Superhelices in Ferroelectric Chiral Nanosprings

Abstract:Topological objects of nontrivial spin or dipolar field textures, such as skyrmions, merons, and vortices, interacting with applied external fields in ferroic materials are of great scientific interest as an intriguing playground of unique physical phenomena and novel technological paradigms. The quest for new topological configurations of such swirling field textures has primarily been done for magnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, while the absence of such intrinsic chiral interactions among electric dipoles left ferroelectrics aside in this quest. Here, we demonstrate that a helical polarization coiled into another helix, namely a polar superhelix, can be extrinsically stabilized in ferroelectric nanosprings. The interplay between dipolar interactions confined in the chiral geometry and the complex strain field of mixed bending and twisting induces the superhelical configuration of electric polarization. The geometrical structure of the polar superhelix gives rise to electric chiralities at two different length scales and the coexistence of three order parameters, i.e., polarization, toroidization, and hypertoroidization, both of which can be manipulated by homogeneous electric and/or mechanical fields. Our work therefore provides a new geometrical configuration of swirling dipolar fields, which offers the possibility of multiple order-parameters, and electromechanically controllable dipolar chiralities and associated electro-optical responses.
Superhelices with Designed Helical Structures and Temperature-Stimulated Chirality Transitions

Abstract:The synthesis of multicomponent superhelices with determined chirality has been realized. By adding water to polymer solution in organic solvents (tetrahydrofuran/N,N′-dimethylformamide, THF/DMF), poly(γ-benzyl l-glutamate)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PBLG-b-PEG) are able to pack orderly around the surface of PBLG homopolymer bundles with designed helical structures, e.g., right-handed and left-handed, depending on THF/DMF ratio and temperature. A systematic investigation leads to the construction of a temperature–organic solvent composition phase diagram. Before the organic solvents were totally removed, the chirality of the assemblies can be reversibly switched using temperature stimulus. This temperature-stimulated chirality transition of polypeptide superhelices is unprecedented. Circular dichroism (CD) experiments indicated that the packing mode of pending phenyl groups from PBLG chain is responsible for the determination of the helical morphologies.

Abstract:Self-assembly in nature is fundamentally dynamic, existing in out-of-equilibrium state in which the systems have the ability to autonomously respond to environmental changes. However, artificial systems exist in a global minimum state, which are incapable of conducting such complex functions. Here we report that input of thermal energy can trigger fixed, artificial toroids to spontaneously nucleate helical growth. The helical polymerization undergoes reversible and repeatable cycles with subsequent energy input. When the toroids are located inside lipid vesicles, the polymerization-depolymerization cycle is accompanied by reversible elongation of spherical vesicles. Such liberation from a global minimum state will pave the way to create emergent structures with functions as complex as those of living systems.
Metallo‐Helicoid with Double Rims: Polymerization Followed by Folding by Intramolecular Coordination

Abstract:In this study, we established a feasible strategy to construct a new type of metallo-polymer with helicoidal structure through the combination of covalent polymerization and intramolecular coordination-driven self-assembly. In the design, a tetratopic monomer (M) was prepared with two terminal alkynes in the outer rim for polymerization, and two terpyridines (TPYs) in the inner rim for subsequent folding by selective intramolecular coordination. Then, the linear covalent polymer (P) was synthesized by polymerization of M via Glaser-Hay homocoupling reaction. Finally, intramolecular coordination interactions between TPYs and Zn(II) folded the backbone of P into a right- or left-handed metallo-helicoid (H) with double rims. Owing to multiple positive charges on the inner rim of helicoid, double-stranded DNA molecules (dsDNA) could interact with H through electrostatic interactions. Remarkably, dsDNA allowed exclusive formation of H with right handedness by means of chiral induction.
Stimuli‐Directed Dynamic Reconfiguration in Self‐Organized Helical Superstructures Enabled by Chemical Kinetics of Chiral Molecular Motors

Abstract:Dynamic controllability of self-organized helical superstructures in spatial dimensions is a key step to promote bottom-up artificial nanoarchitectures and functional devices for diverse applications in a variety of areas. Here, a light-driven chiral overcrowded alkene molecular motor with rod-like substituent is designed and synthesized, and its thermal isomerization reaction exhibits an increasing structural entropy effect on chemical kinetic analysis in anisotropic achiral liquid crystal host than that in isotropic organic liquid. Interestingly, the stimuli-directed angular orientation motion of helical axes in the self-organized helical superstructures doped with the chiral motors enables the dynamic reconfiguration between the planar (thermostationary) and focal conic (photostationary) states. The reversible micromorphology deformation processes are compatible with the free energy fluctuation of self-organized helical superstructures and the chemical kinetics of chiral motors under different conditions. Furthermore, stimuli-directed reversible nonmechanical beam steering is achieved in dynamic hidden periodic photopatterns with reconfigurable attributes prerecorded with a corresponding photomask and photoinduced polymerization.
Reversible Manipulation of Supramolecular Chirality using Host-Guest Dynamics between β-Cyclodextrin and Alkyl Amines.

Abstract:Host-guest interactions are widely employed in constructing responsive materials, although less is known to manipulate the chiral property of materials using such host-guest dynamics. With the supramolecular self-assembly based on beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) and alkyl amines (CH3(CH2)(n-1)NH2), we report that faster host-guest dynamics induces a dipole located above the cavity of beta-CD, whereas slower dynamics create in-cavity dipole. These two scenarios correspond to negative and positive chiral signals, respectively. Considering that a larger fraction of amines facilitates faster exchange between the threaded and unthreaded amines, the chiral signal for the right-handed helical ribbons can be manipulated simply by alternatively increasing the fraction of amines and beta-CD. Excitingly, enzyme responsive supramolecular chirality is obtained as a result of shifting the molar ratio by enzyme triggered hydrolysis of beta-CD. We expect that this strategy may open up an area of rationally designed chiral supramolecular materials based on host-guest chemistry.
Supramolecular Polymers Capable of Controlling Their Topology

Abstract:One important class of supramolecular materials is one-dimensionally elongated supramolecular polymers, in which monomers are associated by reversible intermolecular interactions, yielding a fibrous morphology. Unlike frequently reported conventional supramolecular polymers based on, for instance, host-guest interactions, those composed of one-dimensionally stacked π-conjugated molecules can be encoded with high degrees of internal order by cooperative association of the rigid aromatic monomers, endowing such supramolecular polymers with extraordinary properties and functionality. However, their internal order has not yet been exploited to manipulate the complex landscape of well-defined states of the supramolecular polymer backbone, which may induce new functionalities beyond the intrinsic properties of the backbones. This Account will focus on the inceptive phase of our research on supramolecular polymers with high degrees of internal order able to impart intrinsic curvature to their backbones. Initially, we developed a naphthalene molecule functionalized with barbituric acid, which forms uniform toroidal short fibers with diameters of approximately 16 nm via the formation of hydrogen-bonded cyclic hexamers (rosettes). As we thought the uniformity of the toroid size to arise from the intrinsic curvature generated upon stacking of the rosettes, we exploited this intrinsic curvature to design continuously curved extended supramolecular polymers by extension of such molecular π-systems. The intrinsic curvature produced by the monomers with more expanded π-systems indeed gave us access to higher-order structures (topologies) ranging from randomly folded to helically folded coils in extended supramolecular polymers. We will discuss the kinetic aspects of the generation of intrinsic curvature for topology control, including the formation of toroidal structures resulting from ring-closing processes. For extended supramolecular polymers with well-defined topologies, we will discuss manipulation of a complex landscape of well-defined states by external stimuli. The incorporation of a photoresponsive azobenzene chromophore in the original naphthalene molecular scaffold allowed us to reversibly destroy or recover the curvature of the main chain through trans- cis photoisomerization. By means of this photocontrollable curvature, we have demonstrated light-induced unfolding of helically folded structures into entirely stretched structures. Furthermore, a direct extension of the π-conjugated core provided us with access to unprecedented supramolecular polymers with emergent time-dependent topology transitions. Molecules with a naphthalene core conjugated with two phenylene units kinetically afforded supramolecular polymers that consist of helically folded and misfolded domains. Upon aging the supramolecular polymer solution, we observed spontaneous folding of the misfolded domains in a time scale of days, eventually obtaining a supramolecular polymer topology analogous to the tertiary structure of proteins. These supramolecular polymers with unrivaled and active topologies provide new prospects for supramolecular polymers as one-dimensional nanomaterials.

Abstract:There is growing interest in the design of synthetic molecules that are able to self-assemble into a polymeric chain with compact helical conformations, which is analogous to the folded state of natural proteins. Herein, we highlight supramolecular approach to the formation of helical architectures and their conformational changes driven by external stimuli. Helical organization in synthetic self-assembling systems can be achieved by the various types of noncovalent interactions, which include hydrogen bonding, solvophobic effects, and metal-ligand interactions. Since the external environment can have a large influence on the strength and configuration of noncovalent interactions between the individual components, stimulus-induced alterations in the intramolecular noncovalent interactions can result in dynamic conformational change of the supramolecular helical structure thus, driving significant changes in the properties of the materials. Abstract:Biological homochirality is a signature of life. Supramolecular polymerization is effective to achieve high hierarchical homochirality in nature, but has not been well-explored. Herein, we report regioselective and homochiral supramolecular polymerization of chiral nanotadpole aggregates made of either synthetic helical poly(phenylacetylene)s or chirality-amplified co-assembly of chiral and achiral poly(phenylacetylene)s. The twisted nanotadpole aggregates with high screw-sense preference polymerized as monomers (aggremers) into supramolecular chains in a head-to-tail regioselective and stepwise manner. Supramolecular copolymerization of enantiomeric aggremers favored formation of homochiral hierarchical supramolecular structures as visualized by TEM. Chiral hexagonal columnar mesophase of aggremers was responsive for the stereoselectivity. The work opens a gate to controllably and effectively construct functional chiral supramolecular materials and deepens the understanding of hierarchical biological homochirality.

Reversible Micrometer‐Scale Spiral Self‐Assembly in Liquid Crystalline Block Copolymer Film with Controllable Chiral Response

Abstract:The spiral is a fundamental structure in nature and spiral structures with controllable handedness are of increasing interest in the design of new chiroptical materials. In this study, micrometer-scale spiral structures with reversible chirality were fabricated based on the assembly of a liquid crystalline block copolymer film assisted by enantiopure tartaric acid. Mechanistic insight revealed that the formation of the spiral structures was closely related to the liquid crystalline properties of the major phase of block copolymer under the action of chiral tartaric acid. The chiral spiral structures with controllable handedness were easily erased under ultraviolet light irradiation and restored via thermal annealing. This facile thermal treatment method provides guidance for fabrication of chiral micrometer-scale spiral structures with adjustable chiral properties.
Stereospecific supramolecular polymerization of nanoclusters into ultra-long helical chains and enantiomer separation

Abstract:During the construction of supramolecular polymers of smaller nanoparticles/nanoclusters bearing hierarchy and homochirality, the mechanism understanding via intuitive visualization and precise cross-scale chirality modulation is still challenging. For this goal, a cooperative self-assembly strategy is here proposed by using ionic complexes with uniform chemical composition comprising polyanionic nanocluster cores and surrounded chiral cationic organic components as monomers for supramolecular polymerization. The single helical polymer chains bearing a core-shell structure at utmost length over 20 μm are demonstrated showing comparable flexibility resembling covalent polymers. A nucleation-elongation growth mechanism that is not dealt with in nanoparticle systems is confirmed to be accompanied by strict chiral self-sorting. A permeable membrane prepared by simple suction of such supramolecular polymers displays high enantioselectivity (e.e. 98% after four runs) for separating histidine derivatives, which discloses a benefiting helical chain structure-induced functionalization for macroscopic supramolecular materials in highly efficient racemate separation.

Abstract:We have demonstrated that, as the molecular length of elliptical macrocycle is increased, the self-assembled structure changes from spherical micelles to helical coils and finally to monolayered vesicles, in the order of decreasing interfacial curvature. Notably, the helical coils reversibly transform into straight rods upon heating while maintaining the supramolecular chirality. This structural transition is accompanied by conformational change of the elliptical macrocycles from a boat conformation to a more planar conformation.

Abstract:The tunability nature of supramolecular chirality is subtly employed where various small amounts of achiral diaminopyridines are used to copolymerize with m‐phenylenediamine based on a copolymerization‐mediated strategy to modulate the macroscopic helicity as well as the chiroptical activity of the resulting robust covalent polymers in an enantiopure template molecular system. Designing artificial systems to mimic chiral superstructures and exploring how achiral molecules precisely modulate their chirality is crucial to understand the origin of homochirality in nature. Herein, the tunability nature of supramolecular chirality is subtly applied to fabricate robust chiral covalent polymers with controlled macroscopic helicity. When using conventional supramolecular transcription methods to prepare chiral poly(m‐phenylenediamine), simply introducing various small amounts of achiral diaminopyridines (DAPs) to copolymerize with m‐phenylenediamine (MPD) enables the resulting chiral copolymers with adjustable helical configurations and chiroptical activities in an enantiopure template system. The strong hydrogen bonds between DAPs and the template molecules ((S)/(R)‐PhgC16) proved to be the driving force for guiding the chiral polymerization mode of MPD. Impressively, the exquisite self‐sorting phenomenon is observed by tuning the stoichiometric ratio of DAP and (R)‐PhgC16, where the as‐prepared copolymers with opposite helicity can exist simultaneously to form a double network structure and their chiroptical activity can be well regulated. In addition, based on such a copolymerization strategy, a conceptual library of helical functional copolymers is built with editable polymer types including conducting polymers and designable amine‐aldehyde condensation‐based polymers. This copolymerization‐mediated synthetic strategy may facilitate the development of chiral polymers with controlled morphologies and dynamic compositions.

Abstract:AbstractConstructing polymeric toroids with a uniform, tunable size is challenging. Reported herein is the formation of uniform toroids from poly(γ‐benzyl‐l‐glutamate)‐graft‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PBLG‐g‐PEG) graft copolymers by a two‐step self‐assembly process. In the first step, uniform rodlike micelles are prepared by dialyzing the polymer dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (THF)/N,N′‐dimethylformamide (DMF) against water. With the addition of THF in the second step, the rodlike micelles curve and then close end‐to‐end to form uniform toroids, which resemble a cyclization reaction.

Abstract:Polymorphism has been the subject of investigation across different research disciplines. In biology, polymorphism could be interpreted in such a way that discrete biomacromolecules can adopt diversiform specific conformations/packing arrangement, and this polymorph-dependent property is essential for many biochemical processes. For example, bacterial flagellar filament, composed of flagellin, switches between different supercoiled state allowing the bacteria to swim and tumble. However, in artificial supramolecular systems, it is often challenging to achieve polymorph control and prediction, and in most cases, two or more concomitant polymorphs of similar formation energies coexist. Here, we show that a tetrameric protein with properly oriented binding sites on its surface can arrange into diverse protein tubes with distinct helical parameters by adding specifically designed inducing ligands. We examined several parameters of the ligand that would influence the protein tube formation and found that the flexibility of the ligand linker and the dimerization pose of the ligand complex is critical for the successful production of the tubes and eventually influence the specific helical polymorphs of the formed tubes. A surface lattice accommodation model was further developed to rationalize the geometrical relationship between each helical tube type. Molecular simulation was used to elucidate the interactions between ligands and SBA and molecular basis for polymorphic switching of the protein tubes. Moreover, the kinetics of structural formation was studied and the ligand design was found that can affect the kinetics of the protein polymerization pathway. In short, our designed protein tubes serves as an enlightening system for understanding how a protein polymer composed of a single protein switches among different helical states.
Controllable Macroscopic Chirality of Coordination Polymers Through Ph and Anion-Mediated Weak Interactions.

Abstract:Helical architectures with controllable helical sense bias have recently attracted considerable interest for mimicking biological helices and developing novel chiral materials. Coordination polymers (CPs), composed of metal ion nodes and organic linkers, are intriguing systems showing tunable structures and functions. However, CPs with helical morphologies have rarely been explored so far. Particularly, chirality inversion through external stimulus has not been achieved in helical CPs. In this work, we carried out an in-depth investigation on the self-assembly of 1D gadolinium(III) phosphonate CPs using GdX3 (X=Cl, Br, I) and Gd(RSO3 ) (R=CH3 , C6 H5 , CF3 ) as metal sources and R-(1-phenylethylamino)methyl phosphonic acid (R-pempH2 ) as ligand. Superhelices were formed by precise control of the interchain interactions through different intercalated anions. Furthermore, the twisting direction of superhelices could be controlled by synergistic effect of anions and pH. This study may provide a new route to fabricate helical nanostructures of CPs with a desirable chiral sense and help understand the inner mechanism of the self-assembly process of macroscopic helical structures of molecular systems.

Abstract:We report the synthesis and microscopic investigations of two chiral helical porphyrin supramolecular polymers with different coordinating metals that are expected to be capable of serving as synthetic macromolecular motors driven by thermal fluctuations. Furthermore, based on their microscopic images, we propose a stepwise process for the formation of higher-order structures. These porphyrins formed completely different association states, and this was reflected in the marked differences in the shapes of the supramolecular polymers. The Cu-TChOAlaCPP supramolecular polymers formed H-aggregate rods in diisopropyl ether, then grew into superhelices and then into ribbons. On the other hand, Zn-TChOAlaCPP supramolecular polymers formed aggregates based on van der Waals interactions in diethyl ether, then grew into fibers and then grew into multiple-helices and ribbons. In addition, we imaged the interaction between long and short chains of the Cu-TChOAlaCPP supramolecular polymer by fast-scanning atomic force microscopy, and we indicated the availability as a macromolecular motor driven by thermal fluctuations.

Abstract:The co-assembly of spherical colloids and surfactant–cyclodextrin microtubes yields a library of dynamic colloid-in-tube structures, including helices. In situ observations of these structures, including their thermo-reversible assembly and disassembly, demonstrate the potential of the interplay between molecular and colloidal self-assembly, thereby providing a novel route to temperature-sensitive particle alignment and release.
