Abstract:Transition metal-nitrogen-doped carbon (M-N-C) single-atom catalysts exhibit high activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Their electronic structure, crucial for ORR intermediates' adsorption/desorption, can be tuned by altering the coordination environment or integrating small metal nanoparticles. However, synthesizing unsaturated M-N-X (x <4) complexes with well-dispersed nanoparticles is challenging due to reactivity and aggregation issues. In this study, a novel plasma-assisted in situ thermal reduction strategy is presented to eliminate unstable surface groups for incorporating highly active Co nanoparticles (NPs) and unsaturated coordinated Co-N-2 sites. The unsaturated coordination structure of Co-N-2 regulates the electron cloud density around the Co center, decreasing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step of 4e(- )ORR process; while the Co NPs can accelerate the mass transfer during ORR through enhancing O-2 adsorption to promote the desorption of *OH and also facilitate the charge transfer. Thus, the remarkable ORR electrocatalytic activity and durability is achieved simultaneously, leading to excellent performance in an aqueous Zn-air battery. The work opens new directions and possibilities for the design and synthesis of efficient and highly selective electrocatalysts for ORR and other redox reactions.

Abstract:The development of efficient, inexpensive, and stable bifunctional non-noble metal catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of practical significance for the large-scale application of zinc-air batteries. Here, a novel bifunctional Co-based nano-catalyst (Co@CxNyC) is fabricated by complexation-reduction and high-temperature pyrolysis method. Co nanoparticles were loaded in nitrogen-doped hollow irregular carbon nanotubes derived from natural fibers and carbon quantum dots. Remarkably, the unique hollow structure and the Co-Nx active site make the screened Co@C1N3C have efficient ORR&OER catalytic performance. Co@C1N3C with onset potential (0.90 V) and half-wave potential (0.84 V) exhibited an efficient 4e− transfer path and favorable stability and methanol tolerance. Moreover, the overpotential of Co@C1N3C needed to achieve 100 mA cm−2 is 625 mV, which is 31 mV better than that of RuO2. In conclusion, this work not only provides deep insights into the catalytic activity of Co@CxNyC nanocomposite as ORR&OER bifunctional electrocatalysts but also guides the growth of Co-based bifunctional catalysts.

Abstract:An ultralong N,S co‐doped carbon nano‐hollow‐sphere chain with encapsulated Co nanoparticles (Co‐CNHSC) is synthesized as a bifunctional catalyst for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by adopting a one‐step pyrolysis method. Benefiting from the electronic structure modulation between metal and nonmetal species, the optimized Co‐CNHSC‐3 exhibits an excellent bifunctional activity for OER and ORR and also shows superior performance for Zn‐air batteries. The development of simple and effective strategies to prepare electrocatalysts, which possess unique and stable structures comprised of metal/nonmetallic atoms for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), is currently an urgent issue. Herein, an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst featured by ultralong N, S‐doped carbon nano‐hollow‐sphere chains about 1300 nm with encapsulated Co nanoparticles (Co‐CNHSCs) is developed. The multifunctional catalytic properties of Co together with the heteroatom‐induced charge redistribution (i.e., modulating the electronic structure of the active site) result in superior catalytic activities toward OER and ORR in alkaline media. The optimized catalyst Co‐CNHSC‐3 displays an outstanding electrocatalytic ability for ORR and OER, a high specific capacity of 1023.6 mAh gZn−1, and excellent reversibility after 80 h at 10 mA cm−2 in a Zn‐air battery system. This work presents a new strategy for the design and synthesis of efficient multifunctional carbon‐based catalysts for energy storage and conversion devices.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel bifunctional catalyst consisting of nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) in situ grafted on CoNi-MOF derivative (named CoN/NCNTs) is controllable synthesized by simple two-steps. Characterization analysis reveal that the interconnected three-dimensional heterostructure not only atomically dispersed CoNi nanocrystalline, but also autocatalytic grow NCNTs on its surface. The size of CoNi alloy is less than 10 nm, and the crystallization degree of coated graphene carbon layer is extraordinary high. Especially, NCNTs wrapped on in dihydrodiamine vapour atmosphere form a spatial conductive network, which make the optimized /NCNTs-400 deliver faster catalytic kinetics toward methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) compared with the and The peak current density is as high as 58.37 mA cm -2 at the scanning rate is 30 mV s -1 in 0.5 M KOH +1 M CH 3 OH solution. Furthermore, the /NCNTs-400 hybrids display excellent ORR catalytic efficiency in terms of half-wave potential (E 1/2 = 0.810 V vs RHE) and high stability. The satisfactory electrocatalytic activity is ascribed to the synergetic effect between CoNi nanoparticles embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon framework and NCNTs, which includes the high conductivity, highly dispersed active sites, optimized electronic configuration and reaction pathways.

Abstract:Ni-based electrocatalysts with strong redox abilities are active for the electrochemical oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Interface engineering is an efficient way to modulate the electronic structure, tune the intermediate adsorption, and expose more active sites. Herein, we increased the concentration of interfacial sites with rich defects in a 3D hierarchical nanostructured NiO-Co3O4 electrocatalyst and investigated its catalytic performance for HMF electro-oxidation. The interface effect created abundant cation vacancies, modulated the electronic properties of Co and Ni atoms, and raised the oxidation state of Ni species. The NiO-Co3O4 catalysts show superb HMF oxidation activities with a low onset potential of 1.28 VRHE. Meanwhile, in-situ surface-selective vibrational spectroscopy of sum-frequency generation was performed to study the reaction pathway during the oxidation process on the electrocatalysts. The current study offers an efficient way to create cation vacancies and proves the decisive role of cation vacancies in catalyzing the HMF electro-oxidation.

Abstract:The rational design of active and durable reversible oxygen electrocatalysts plays a key role in renewable energy conversion and storage. Here we developed copper and cobalt-based oxide/iron hydroxide hybrid nanowire arrays (CuCoOx/FeOOH) via a three-step growth-annealing-conversion approach. These hybrid nanowires offer a large surface area for electrocatalytic sites, abundant pores for fast electrolyte access, efficient charge transfer, and strong coupling between CuCoOx and FeOOH components. Attributed to these features, the CuCoOx/FeOOH nanowires exhibit excellent bifunctional oxygen evolution reaction and oxygen reduction reaction activities, including low overpotentials, high current densities, and outstanding stabilities. Using the CuCoOx/FeOOH electrocatalyst as the oxygen electrode, a rechargeable zinc-air battery was fabricated to exhibit a small charge-discharge overpotential (0.75 V at 10 mA.cm(-2)) and a long-term cycling stability (150 cycles), thus suggesting new bifunctional electrocatalysts for energy conversion and storage applications.

Abstract:Highly efficient, non-precious and stable electrocatalysts for both oxygen (O2) reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have drawn attention as alternatives to noble-metal catalysts. The rational construction of dual-functional catalysts is meaningful because most nanomaterials can perform only a single electrocatalytic activity. Herein, nitrogen (N)-doped carbon (C) nanotubes encapsulating CoNi alloy (CoNi@NCNTs) nanoparticles coupled with a cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni) dual atom hybrid are successfully designed and synthesized through a simple metal–organic-framework-assisted strategy, which are explored as a catalyst for ORR and OER. The optimized catalyst exhibits highly efficient bifunctional catalytic activity with a low voltage spacing of 0.78 V between an overpotential of 370 mV (at 10 mA/cm2) toward OER and a half-wave potential of 0.822 V toward ORR, as well as high durability. The excellent electrocatalytic performance should be attributed to the advantages of uniformly dispersed CoNi alloy nanoparticles, highly conductive nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes and the formation of metal–Nxspecies. This work provides a novel strategy for rationally designing bifunctional catalysts for reversible energy conversion.
Carbon nanotube-encapsulated Co/Co3Fe7 heterojunctions as a highly-efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for rechargeable zinc-air batteries

Abstract:In oxygen electrocatalysis, how to rationally design low-cost catalysts with reasonable structure and long-term stability is a crucial issue. Here, an in-situ growth strategy is used to construct a shaped structure encapsulating a uniformly-dispersed Co/Co3Fe7 heterojunction in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Co/Co3Fe7@NCNTs). Hollow CoFe layered-double-hydroxide prisms act as sacrifices for in-situ growth of Co/Co3Fe7 nanoparticles, which also catalyze the growth of bamboo-like NCNTs. Tubular structure not only accelerates the charge transfer through the interactions between Co and Co3Fe7, but also limits the aggregation of the particles, thereby promoting the 4e- oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) kinetics and stabilizing the bifunctional activity. Co/Co3Fe7@NCNTs-800 (pyrolyzed at 800 °C) shows exceptional ORR activity (half-wave potential of 0.89 V) and methanol tolerance. Meanwhile, Co/Co3Fe7@NCNTs-800 shows a small OER overpotential of 280 mV, which increases by only 9 mV after 1000 cyclic voltammetry (CV) cycles. The outstanding bifunctionality (potential gap of 0.62 V) is ascribed to the electronic structure modulation at the Co/Co3Fe7 heterointerface. Notably, it also has a high performance as an air-cathode for rechargeable zinc-air battery, showing high power density (165 mW cm-2) and specific capacity (770.5 m Ah kg-1). This work provides a new reference for promoting the development of alloy catalysts with heterogeneous interfaces.

Abstract:Ni2P nanoparticles anchored on MOF-derived Co,N-doped porous carbon polyhedrons (Ni2P/CoN-PCP) were successfully prepared. The Ni2P/CoN-PCP catalyst shows excellent trifunctional electrocatalytic performances for the oxygen reduction, oxygen evolution, and hydrogen evolution reactions, attributed to the synergistic effect between active Ni2P nanoparticles and the CoN-PCP support with rich Co-Nx centres, abundant defects and high conductivity. This work demonstrates a superior low-cost electrocatalyst for potential application in fuel cells and water splitting devices.

Abstract:CoN nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes hybrid supported on carbon foam (INPs-CoN/CNTs-CF) electrocatalyst was synthesized by one-step pyrolysis of irregular nanoparticles ZIF-67 (ZIF-67-INPs) with melamine foam. The INPs-CoN/CNTs-CF electrocatalyst exhibited remarkable activity for ORR with a high half-wave potential of 0.862 V vs. RHE, and a good HER electrocatalytic activity with overpotential of 180 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 102.5 mV dec−1. This electrocatalyst can be a promising bifunctional alternative for both ORR and HER. This work provides a new insight for the design of new-type multi-functional electrocatalysts for practical applications.

Abstract:Due to their synergistic and tunable effects, bimetallic alloy systems have recently attracted considerable attention as superior catalysts. Herein, Pd-Co bimetallic alloy nanoparticles were uniformly deposited onto CuO nanosheet supports. This nanostructured catalyst was first shown to be an effective catalyst to convert N-2 to NH3 in 0.1 M KOH with a yield of 10.04 g h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1) and a faradaic efficiency of 2.16%. The catalyst also performed well in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction at room temperature without an inert atmosphere and any toxic solvents. Thus, the catalyst is consistent with the principles of green chemistry. Due to the synergistic effects, this bimetallic Pd-Co catalyst shows higher catalytic activity than its monometallic counterparts. Moreover, the Pd/Co ratio was tuned to achieve the best catalytic performance. Finally, the Pd-Co/CuO catalyst presented good stability and recyclability. The superior catalytic activity of the bimetallic alloy catalyst make it an alternative material for catalytic applications in the future.

Abstract:Cobalt based catalysts are promising bifunctional electrocatalysts for both oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions (ORR and OER) in unitized regenerative fuel cells (URFCs) operating with alkaline electrolytes. Here we report a hybrid composite of cobalt nanoparticles embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon (Co/N-C) via a solvothermal carbonization strategy. With the synergistic effect arising from the N-doped carbon and cobalt nanoparticles in the composite, the Co/N-C hybrid catalyst exhibits highly efficient bifunctional catalytic activity and excellent stability toward both ORR and OER. The Delta E (oxygen electrode activity parameter for judging the overall electrocatalytic activity of a bifunctional electrocatalyst) value for Co/N-C is 0.859 V, which is smaller than those of Pt/C and most of the non-precious metal catalysts in previous studies. Furthermore, the Co/N-C composite also shows better bifunctional catalytic activity than its oxidative counterparts, which could be attributed to the high specific surface area and the efficient charge transfer ability of the composite, as well as the good synergistic effect between N-doped carbon and the Co nanoparticles in the Co/N-C composite.

Abstract:Synthesis of novel bifunctional catalysts based on earth-abundant elements with high catalytic activities for both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) becomes a main strategy to promote the development of metal-air batteries and fuel cells. Herein, a novel Co2+-based mixed transition metal oxide composite, the three-dimensional (3D) nanosheet-structured NiCoO2/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite, was successfully synthesized through a facile one-pot method. The better electrocatalytic activities of NiCoO2/CNTs for both ORR and OER than those of pure NiCoO2, CNTs, physically mixed NiCoO2 and CNTs, and Co3O4/CNTs are proved. The comparison of local ORR and OER electrocatalytic activities of NiCoO2/CNTs to other catalysts are obtained by scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) characterizations. The closed oxygen reduction peak and half-wave potentials, nearly four-electron dominated process, better methanol tolerance and electrochemical stability confirm the comparable electrocatalytic performance and better stability of NiCoO2/CNTs to the commercial Pt/C catalyst for ORR. The similar stability of NiCoO2/CNTs demonstrates its comparable electrocatalytic performance to the state-of-the-art RuO2 catalyst for OER. The as-prepared NiCoO2/CNTs composite presents as a promising bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst in alkaline solution for potential applications.

Abstract:Homologous NiCo based mesoporous nanowire arrays, involving nickel cobalt oxide (NiCo2O4) and nickel cobalt sulfide (NiCo2S4), are successfully grown on three-dimensional (3D) nitrogen-doped carbon foam (NDCF) via a facile hydrothermal reaction followed by annealing and sulfurization treatment, respectively. The NiCo2O4 nanowires in the obtained NiCo2O4/NDCF composites are composed of numerous small nanoparticles with the presence of mesopores, while the NiCo2S4 nanowires of NiCo2S4/NDCF composites exhibit unique hollow structures with mesoporous walls. When served as non-noble catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the homologous NiCo2O4/NDCF and NiCo2S4/NDCF composites exhibit a comparable catalytic activity with a four-electron pathway, superior selectively and methanol tolerance over commercial Pt/C catalyst. Especially, the NiCo2S4/NDCF composites possess much higher stability than the Pt/C catalyst in alkaline electrolyte, thus holding great promise in practical application. The impressive performance may originate from the hollow nanowire morphology and the unique mesoporous structure which provide a high surface density of catalytic active sites exposed to oxygen molecules and facilitate the efficient transport of reactant species. Meanwhile, the introduced NDCF with enhanced catalytic activity from the incorporation of the N element generates synergistic effect with NiCo2O4 and NiCo2S4, and enhances their conductivities, therefore playing a significant role in improving their catalytic performance.

Abstract:The development of bifunctional electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and cyclic stability is an effective method for electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, a promising hydroxide/oxide Co(OH)2/α-NiMoO4 NWs/CC heterostructure with nanoflowers decorating the nanowires was fabricated on a carbon cloth (CC) substrate via hydrothermal and calcination methods. In contrast to one-dimensional nanomaterials, the interfaces of Co(OH)2 nanoflowers and α-NiMoO4 nanowires on CC provide more active sites for electrocatalytic reactions; therefore, they exhibit obviously enhanced electrocatalytic activities in overall water splitting. Specifically, the Co(OH)2/α-NiMoO4 NWs/CC electrodes exhibit an overpotential of 183.01 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and of 170.26 mV for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) at the current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 1.0 M KOH. Moreover, the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of the Co(OH)2/α-NiMoO4 NWs/CC electrocatalyst was enhanced after long-term stability tests.

Abstract:The rational exploitation of non-precious metal catalyst with high activity, strong durability and low cost for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of vital importance for metal–air batteries. Herein, a composite of Co3O4 nanoparticles confined in three-dimensional (3D) N-doped porous carbon (Co-NpCs) was prepared by a simple freeze-drying and in situ pyrolysis method. The effect of different dosages of Co(NO3)2 on the catalytic performance was discussed. The Co-NpC-12% exhibits the best catalytic performance (E1/2 = 0.78 V, better stability than 20% Pt/C) in ORR and in OER among all the as-synthesized samples. Furthermore, it also exhibits the best bifunctional activity (ΔE = 0.849 V). The excellent properties of Co-NpCs are mainly due to the synergy between Co3O4 and carbon. Firstly, a high Co3O4 loading amount can boost the defect level of the N-doped hierarchical porous carbon and expose more active sites. Secondly, the unique in situ pyrolysis guarantees a large-area contact between Co3O4 and carbon as well as a strong C–O–Co bonding, which promotes charge transfer, avoids the peeling of Co3O4 nanoparticles and effectively improves the stability of the material. This work is expected to offer a feasible strategy to produce metal oxide/carbon nanocomposite and push forward the development of bifunctional electrocatalyst with high activity and stability.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Graphic </h3>

Abstract:The rational design and use of highly efficient, economic, and environmentally friendly bifunctional catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is important for developing methods for overall water splitting. Here, we report a facile self-catalyzed growth strategy for in situ encapsulation of Co nanoparticles with N-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) on Ni foam (NF) (Co/NCNTs-NF-T; T represents the pyrolysis temperature). The zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF-67) precursor, which was used as a structure inducer, provided a Co source for catalyzing melamine graphitization and promoted in situ growth of NCNTs on the NF surface. This encapsulation structure and self-supporting system enhance the HER and OER activities of Co/NCNTs-NF-900 (low overpotentials of 66.98 mV for the HER and 240.32 mV for the OER at 10 mA cm-2). This binder-free catalyst for overall water splitting, i.e., Co/NCNTs-NF-900, has excellent catalytic activity and durability. This method offers a facile and green strategy for designing highly active bifunctional electrocatalysts and paves the way for the future development of energy conversion/storage systems.

Abstract:To alleviate the problems of environmental pollution and energy crisis, aggressive development of clean and alternative energy technologies, in particular, water splitting, metal–air batteries, and fuel cells involving two key half reactions comprising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction (ORR), is crucial. In this work, an innovative hybrid comprising heterogeneous Cu/Co bimetallic nanoparticles homogeneously dispersed on a nitrogen-doped carbon layer (Cu/Co/NC) was constructed as a bifunctional electrocatalyst toward HER and ORR via a hydrothermal reaction along with post-solid-phase sintering technique. Thanks to the interfacial coupling and electronic synergism between the Cu and Co bimetallic nanoparticles, the Cu/Co/NC catalyst showed improved catalytic ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.865 V and an excellent stability of more than 30 h, even compared to 20 wt% Pt/C. The Cu/Co/NC catalyst also exhibited excellent HER catalytic performance with an overpotential of below 149 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and long-term operation for over 30 h.

Abstract:Developing a multifunctional electrocatalyst with eminent activity, strong durability, and cheapness for the hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical to overall water splitting and regenerative fuel cells. Herein, a nitrogen-doped nanonetwork assembled by porous and defective NiCo2O4@C nanowires grown on nickel foam (N-NiCo2O4@C@NF) is crafted via biomimetic mineralization and following carbonization of phase-transited lysozyme (PTL)-coupled NiCo2O4. The as-obtained N-NiCo2O4@C@NF electrocatalysts exhibit an exceptional catalytic activity with ultralow overpotentials for the HER (42 mV) and OER (242 mV) to afford 10 mA cm-2 while maintaining good stability in alkaline media. Meanwhile, the N-NiCo2O4@C electrocatalysts presents a superior catalytic activity for ORR and a favorable four-electron pathway. The unprecedented catalytic performance arises from a highly porous structure and abundant defects and synergistic effects of components. This work may offer a new possibility in the exploration of multifunctional electrocatalysts for various energy-related electrocatalytic reactions.
