Abstract:Urban rail networks play an important role in urban transportation. An unexpected disruption in a rail network can cause a significant degradation in the level of service. When a disruption occurs, it is crucial to provide quick and efficient substitution of services via alternative transportation modes, including bridging disconnected railway stations using bus services. The amount of disruptions, surprisingly, is high; for example, there are more than 15 000 disruptions in six months in Melbourne, Australia. The provision of bus bridging services calls for proper planning and designing of a temporary bus bridging network considering limited bus and driver resources, and prevailing urban traffic conditions. Among a number of tasks concerning bus bridging, the demand modeling of affected train passengers is a prerequisite for a satisfactory bus bridging practice. This paper explores this demand modeling problem based on the theory of compound Poisson processes and formulates it as a bulk queuing problem involving balking and reneging. The problem is carefully studied, with a series of analytical results delivered. Large-scale Monte Carlo simulations were designed and implemented to demonstrate a range of mathematical conclusions.

Abstract:Dealing with uncertain rail disruptions effectively raises a significant challenge for computational intelligence research. This article studies the bus bridging problem under demand uncertainty, where the passenger demand is represented as parametric interval-valued fuzzy variables and their associated uncertainty distribution sets. A distributionally robust fuzzy optimization model is proposed to minimize the maximum travel time and to search for the optimal scheme for vehicle allocation, route selection, and frequency determination. To solve the proposed robust model, we discuss the computational issues concerning credibilistic constraints, turning the robust counterpart model into computationally tractable equivalent formulations. The proposed approach is verified, and the resulting method is validated with a report on uncertain parameters in a real-world disrupted event of Shanghai Rail Line 1. Experimental results show that the distributionally robust fuzzy optimization approach can provide a better uncertainty-immunized solution.

Abstract:Although urban rail transit systems play a crucial role in urban mobility, they frequently suffer from unexpected disruptions due to power loss, severe weather, equipment failure, and other factors that cause significant disruptions in passenger travel and, in turn, socioeconomic losses. To alleviate the inconvenience of affected passengers, bus bridging services are often provided when rail service has been suspended. Prior research has yielded various methodologies for effective bus bridging services; however, they are mainly based on the strong assumption that passengers must follow predetermined bus bridging routes. Less attention is paid to passengers’ path choice behaviors, which could affect the performance of the bus bridging services deployed. In this paper, we specifically take passengers’ path choice behaviors into account and address the bus bridging optimization problem under urban rail transit disruptions. Incorporating a PS-logit model to estimate the probabilities of passenger path choices, we propose a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model to simultaneously determine the selection of bus bridging routes and vehicle deployment on selected bridging routes, with the objective of minimizing the cost associated with passenger travel time and unsatisfied demand. To solve this computationally challenging large-scale nonlinear model, we design a customized variable neighborhood search algorithm framework. A case study based on the Shanghai rail transit system is conducted to demonstrate the applicability and feasibility of the proposed approach. The results indicate that our approach can provide an effective bus bridging scheme that considers passenger path choice, which facilitates rapid response to rail disruptions. Our scheme substantially outperforms the current bridging designs that do not consider passenger path choice behaviors by significantly reducing the number of unserved passengers.
Optimizing Bus Bridging Services in Response to Disruptions of Urban Transit Rail Networks

Abstract:With growing dependence of many cities on urban mass transit, even limited disruptions of public transportation networks can lead to widespread confusion and significant productivity losses. A need exists for systematic approaches to developing efficient responses to minimize such negative impacts. We present an optimization-based approach that responds to degradations of urban transit rail networks by introducing smartly designed bus bridging services that take into consideration commuter travel demand at the time of the disruption. The approach consists of three fundamental steps, namely, (1) a column generation procedure to dynamically generate demand-responsive candidate bus routes, (2) a path-based multicommodity network flow model to identify the most effective combination of these candidate bus routes, and (3) another optimization-based procedure to determine simultaneously the optimal allocation of available vehicle resources among the selected routes and corresponding headways. The approach is applied to two case studies defined using actual data. The results show that the proposed approach can be carried out efficiently and that adding nonintuitive bus routes to the standard bus bridging services can significantly reduce the average travel delay. Moreover, the approach distributes delay more equitably. Many realistic operating constraints can also be handled.

Abstract:As the urban rail transit (URT) system plays an increasingly important role in supporting large cities’ mobility around the world, service disruptions have become more prevalent, potentially resulting in severe economic losses and passenger safety issues. It is imperative to investigate effective response strategies to mitigate the effects of such disruptions. In response to URT service disruptions, this paper systematically investigates the bus bridging service design (BBSD) problem, which concerns the integration of bus bridging route design, frequency determination, and passenger assignment in the integrated URT and bus network. The problem is formulated as a path-based integer linear programming (ILP) model with the goal of simultaneously minimizing operator-oriented and passenger-oriented costs. A column generation-based approach is proposed to solve this model efficiently, allowing nonintuitive bus routes to be freely generated on the network dynamically. Our method has been tested with two different case studies based on real data from the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway (MTR). Experiments demonstrate that our proposed approach can assist public transit (PT) operators in developing efficient emergency response plans for various potential disruption situations in advance. Even in the face of unexpected disruptions that necessitate a quick response, our approach can generate high-quality solutions in a matter of minutes.

Abstract:With the growing reliance on urban metro networks, any accidental disruption can lead to rapid degradation and significant economic losses. Bus bridging services are common and efficient ways to minimize such adverse impacts. In this study, we investigate the problem of designing bus bridging services in response to unexpected metro disruptions, and propose a routing strategy with multiple bridging routes. In particular, to respond to uncertain factors such as passenger arrivals and bus travel times in the disruption environment, we develop a two-stage stochastic programming model for the collaborative optimization of bus bridging routes, schedules, and passenger assignments. To solve the computational challenges arising with the proposed model, a tailored tabu search algorithm is developed. Finally, several sets of numerical experiments are conducted and experimental results reveal that our proposed routing strategy can effectively improve the service level for the affected passengers during metro disruptions.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the bus bridging service design in response to an unplanned metro line segment disruption. An integrated optimization model is constructed to address both bus bridging route layouts and bus resource allocation. Diversified routes, e.g., stop-by-stop route, express route, skip-stop route, parallel to the disrupted line segment are applied in the optimized bridging scheme to best respond to the passenger demands. An event-driven simulation-based genetic algorithm is designed to solve the optimization model. The simulation method is introduced to handle the uncertainty of passenger waiting time and the randomness of bus dwelling times at bridging stations and control the bus station capacities and guarantee the feasibility of the bridging schemes. Finally, the effectiveness of our proposed approaches is verified in a case study. Sensitivity analyses explore the impacts of fleet size and route diversity on the bridging performance. The results are instructive for transit agencies to operate bus bridging services.

Abstract:Rapid urbanization and growth of population in megacities generate severe pressures on urban rail transit (URT) system. The quantity and frequency of disruptive events have increased significantly, which might have obvious adverse impacts. A large number of passengers are stranded at disrupted URT station when a disruptive event occurs. One essential solution for passenger evacuation is the bus bridging service. This paper is aimed at addressing the passenger evacuation problem caused by a disruptive event in the URT network, by proposing a bus bridging service model considering the passengers’ space-time requirements. The model is proposed to minimize the waiting time of passengers and considers factors including bus service capacity limitations, bus stop parking capacity, and the maximum bridging time limit of a single bus. Buses are assumed to provide bridging service on either the local bus route or the direct bus route. The optimal routes and scheduling plans of bridging bus are designed. The model is applied to an example of a disruptive event in Shanghai URT line 9. The results of this example show that the proposed model is capable of reducing the waiting time of passengers and the number of buses used by 3.2% and 24.7%, compared with the traditional bus bridging service. Further analysis of the example shows that it is not a cost-effective solution to reserve a large number of buses for URT disruption. Decision-makers should comprehensively trade off between passengers’ space-time demands and monetary costs of bus bridging service.

Abstract:This paper proposes a more computationally efficient approach for resilience assessment of rail transit system under disruptions. An improved linear programming model is developed to depict commuter flows and estimate system statuses. To address the computational challenge caused by the complexity of system, a four‐step approach is proposed based on the proposed commuter flow model. In the first step, Origin‐Destination (OD) pairs are divided into smaller groups and their flows under normal conditions are estimated by the proposed model separately, with the assumption that the railway capacity is sufficient relative to demand. Next, overall system statuses under normal conditions, including commuters on each train and spare capacities of each train are calculated by integrating results obtained in the first step. In the third step, system statuses under disruptions are estimated. In this step, we assume that unaffected commuters will not change their routes and flows of all affected commuters are estimated by a modified commuter model with given spare space of trains. Based on these outputs, several critical measures are introduced and calculated to quantify the resilience, resistance, and recovery ability of rail network systematically. We also demonstrate how our approach could be used to facilitate design and evaluation of bus bridging service. The proposed approach is demonstrated on the core part of Hangzhou rail transit network.

Abstract:With the frequent occurrence of metro disruption, how to guarantee the reliability of the system has gradually become a research hotspot. Previous studies mostly used the bridging bus to maintain the service level, and ignored the experience of passengers, the reliability of conventional bus system, the heterogeneity of passenger and underutilized the capacity. Hence, to deal with the deficiencies, a comprehensive bridging strategy is proposed to balance the benefit of stranded metro passengers and conventional bus passengers considering the dynamic changes in passenger demand. We develop a tailor-made integration framework for operators, dispatch bridging buses from multiple alternative sources, and design two operated access methods: Station-Station docking method and demand-responsive method to satisfy the heterogeneity of passenger. A bi-level programming model is established to describe the strategy and to determine operation scheme. And then, a two-layer multi-objective genetic algorithm is used to solve the bi-level model. A case study is conducted based on the real case of Guangzhou Metro disruption in 2019. The superiority of the proposed strategy over the two benchmark strategies is demonstrated by the results. Notably, the study provides some suitable and operable evacuation strategy for transit operators to guarantee residents’ daily travel plan with the sensitivity analysis.

Real-time dispatching of operating buses during unplanned disruptions to urban rail transit system

Abstract:Unplanned disruptions to urban rail systems can result in widespread confusion and severe delays, and running bus bridging service is a common solution. Currently, transit operators usually adopt experience-based response strategy in such a way that spare buses from bus terminals and parking lots are used to run bus bridging services. Such a response approach can be effective when there are spare buses available at nearby terminals/parking lots. However, in case spare buses are not available or enough, it could be beneficial to dispatch running buses from nearby operating bus lines to ensure efficient response while incurring minimal inconvenience to on-board passengers. While this approach could reduce metro users' delays, it causes extra delays and dissatisfaction to affected bus riders. In this study, we investigate the optimal bus dispatching problem for responding to unplanned disruptions of urban rail transit system with two bus fleet sources: (1) spare buses at terminals and parking lots, and (2) running buses from nearby operating bus lines. To obtain the optimal dispatching scheme, we develop an integer programming model, which achieves a balance between the delays of metro users and that of bus riders. Considering of the high uncertainty of bus headways which could affect the performance of the above deterministic model, we further develop a robust optimization model to obtain more reliable bus dispatching schemes. Case studies based on the data sets in Shanghai are conducted. The results demonstrate that our approach can be carried out in real-time, and employing running buses from operating bus lines shows great potential in reducing affected users' delays. In addition, the robust model offers a more reliable and competitive solution when the headway varies widely.

Abstract:The design of urban bus transit systems aims to determine a network configuration with a set of bus lines and associated frequencies that achieve the targeted objective. This paper presents a methodology framework to formulate and solve the bus transit network design problem (TNDP). It first proposes a TNDP taking into account the travel time stochasticity. A robust optimization model is formulated for the proposed problem, which aims to minimize the sum of the expected value of the operator cost and its variability multiplied by a weighting value. A heuristic solution approach, based on k-shortest path algorithm, simulated annealing algorithm, Monte Carlo simulation, and probit-type discrete choice model, is subsequently developed to solve the robust optimization model. Finally, the proposed methodology is applied to a numerical example.

Abstract:Rail transit system disruption caused by emergency may lead to passenger stranding. Substitute bus bridging between the disruption metro stations is one of important means to reduce the impact of rail transit emergencies. In this paper we establish an optimization model of bus dispatching and carry out a case study based on the public transit system in a city. The bus dispatching scheme under emergency of urban rail transit system is obtained with the virtual depot algoritham. Additionally, the sensitivity of the parameters in the model is analyzed to describe the influence of evacuation time and passenger flow assignment, which has strong practical significance.

Abstract:The impacts of bus running and stopping on the traffic flow were analyzed considering the real operation state of buses at the road segment. On the case of light traffic, treating the bus as a moving service station, a delay model by buses was established based on the queuing theory and the theory of gap acceptance. On the case of heavy traffic, a delay model by buses was established based on the arrival and service representation of vehicles. A solution example was demonstrated. The obtained results provide a theoretical support for determination of the reasonable travel time functions and evaluation of service level at the road segment.

Abstract:A public transit network differs from a general road network. The passenger flow of bus stops and the limited capacity of buses have a greater effect than road traffic flow on the running time of buses. As a result, conventional public transit assignment models that adopt the econometric road network path concept have numerous limitations. Based on the analysis, the generalized bus trip time chain is analyzed, and the concept of a congestion function is proposed to describe the relationship between trip resistance and flow in the current paper. On the premise of this study, the transit network resistance function is formed and the multiroute probit-based loading model is established. With using STOCH or Dial's algorithm, the process of distribution is proposed. Finally, the model is applied to the transit network assignment of Deqing Town in Zhejiang Province. The result indicates that the model can be applied to practical operations with high-precision results.

Abstract:This paper studies the resilient performance of urban rail transit systems by extending a linear programming optimization model, which can provide optimized commuter flows with contingency routing under multiple disruptions. The rail transit systems in Singapore and Chongqing (China) are selected as case studies, and the system resilience and the effectiveness of providing bus-bridging services are comparatively studied. Intuitively, failures of the interchange stations would inevitably lead to a significant loss of resilience due to deteriorated network connectivity. However, the Singapore case shows that attacking those interchange stations does not always result in an extensive resilience loss. Comparing with the Chongqing case, it is discernible that the position of interchange stations would affect the system resilience. The numerical simulations reveal that the positive effect of providing bus-bridging strategy, in terms of improving the system resilience, is heterogeneous in different systems, which varies from 14% to 30% on average. As demonstrated in the sensitivity on travel demands, this positive effect is robust, yet dynamic, indicating that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for designing transfer-based recovery strategies in disruption management of rail transit systems. The managerial implications for decision makers are also provided and discussed in terms of infrastructure planning.
Resilience-based optimization model for emergency bus bridging and dispatching in response to metro operational disruptions

Abstract:Bus-bridging evacuation services can significantly enhance metro resilience during operational disruptions. A resilience-based optimization model was proposed to generate a bus bridging and dispatching plan. The objective of the model is to maximize the resilience index of evacuated passengers while meeting pre-established restrictions on operational indicators and resources. The proposed approach consists of three steps: representing an integrated network based on a hyper-network, generating candidate bus-bridging routes using the K-shortest paths algorithm, and solving the optimization model using a genetic algorithm to determine the optimal vehicle allocation among the candidate routes. The Nanjing metro network was used to demonstrate the proposed model. The results show that the average waiting time is the main reason for travel delays, especially in short-distance travel. Furthermore, the cycling strategy is beneficial for reducing the average travel delay and improving evacuation efficiency with limited vehicles. In particular, when resources are very limited, the vehicle cycling strategy may have significant advantages over fixed vehicles for servicing fixed lines. The proposed model could be widely used in emergency response to quickly and efficiently evacuate passengers.
Robust path recommendations during public transit disruptions under demand uncertainty

Abstract:When there are significant service disruptions in public transit systems, passengers usually need guidance to find alternative paths. This paper proposes a path recommendation model to mitigate congestion during public transit disruptions. Passengers with different origins, destinations, and departure times are recommended with different paths such that the system travel time is minimized. We model the path recommendation problem as an optimal flow problem with uncertain demand information. To tackle the lack of analytical formulation of travel times due to capacity constraints, we propose a simulation-based first-order approximation to transform the original problem into a linear program. Uncertainties in demand are modeled using robust optimization to protect the path recommendation strategies against inaccurate estimates. A real-world rail disruption scenario in the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) system is used as a case study. Results show that even without considering uncertainty, the nominal model can reduce the system travel time by 9.1% (compared to the status quo), and outperforms the benchmark capacity-based path recommendation. The average travel time of passengers in the incident line (i.e., passengers receiving recommendations) is reduced more (−20.6% compared to the status quo). After incorporating the demand uncertainty, the robust model can further reduce system travel times. The best robust model can decrease the average travel time of incident-line passengers by 2.91% compared to the nominal model. The improvement of robust models is more prominent when the actual demand pattern is close to the worst-case demand.

Abstract:Given many cities’ growing dependence on public rail transport, simple network disruptions can lead to widespread confusion and signiﬁcant productivity loss to the society. Therefore, a systematic approach to develop efﬁcient disruption response and minimize the negative impacts is required. In this paper, the authors develop a planning procedure to supplement a degraded urban mass rapid transit network through intelligent introduction of shuttle bus services in the disrupted area. The proposed method includes two important mechanisms, namely (1) using column generation to identify all beneﬁcial bus routes, including those which might not be intuitively found, and (2) using a path-based multi-commodity ﬂow formulation to select the best among these candidate bus routes. Finally, the method is applied to two disruption case studies deﬁned using real-world data; the corresponding results conﬁrmed the practicality of the proposed approach: (1) the procedure can be carried out efﬁciently, (2) introducing bus routes to the naive bridging services can easily yield signiﬁcant improvement on commuters’ travel delay, (3) the distribution of commuters’ travel delay is improved considerably with an optimized response, and (4) many realistic operating constraints can be handled in planning process.
