Abstract:We systematically reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) versus placebo in patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD).A systematic search of multiple online sources electronic databases was undertaken. The methodological quality of each included study was assessed using the modified Jadad scale, and the quality of evidence was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system.A total of 31 RCTs were included. Total modified Jadad scale scores showed that the methodological quality was high in 30 studies and low in 1 study. Combining data from all clinically heterogeneous studies revealed positive effects of LLLT on pain relief, regardless of the visual analogue scale (VAS) score or the change of VAS score between the baseline and the final follow-up time point, while dosage analyses showed discrepant results about the effects of high or low doses for patients with TMD. Follow-up analyses showed that LLLT significantly reduced pain at the short-term follow-up. Temporomandibular joint function outcomes indicated that the overall effect favored LLLT over placebo.This systematic review suggests that LLLT effectively relieves pain and improves functional outcomes in patients with TMD.

Abstract:Background: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a set of conditions with a multifactor etiology that affect the temporomandibular joint and muscles of mastication. Objective: The aim of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of treatment for myofascial TMD using acupuncture and low-level laser therapy compared to occlusal splint. Methods: 23 patients recruited through announcements and online publications. The diagnosis of TMD was confirmed using the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TDM (RDC/TMD) and all participants had moderate to severe pain upon palpation. The participants were randomly allocated to three groups: Group 1–occlusal splint; Group 2–10 sessions of acupuncture (once per week); Group 3–low-level laser therapy at 48-h intervals until the remission of symptoms or until completing 10 sessions. The participants were submitted to evaluations before and after treatment as well as 30 days after the end of treatment involving the determination of pain intensity, maximum vertical mandibular movement, as well as extraoral and intraoral palpations e analyze intra e extra group. Results: Statistically significant improvements in pain intensity were found in the acupuncture and laser groups (p=0.002). Improvements in the masseter and temporal muscles as well as the lateral pole of the temporomandibular joint were achieved with acupuncture and laser. Significant improvement was found in the posterior mandibular region using all three treatment modalities. Improvement in the submandibular region was only achieved with laser therapy. Conclusion: Treatments with acupuncture and low-level laser were more effective at reducing symptoms in individuals with myofascial TMD compared occlusal splint.

Abstract:Objective The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the efficacy of laser therapy in temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Methods Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in regard to this issue were searched in electronic databases. Three investigators independently screened the eligible studies, and the quality of the included studies was assessed according to the risk of bias tool recommended by the Cochrane handbook. The primary outcome measure was the degree of pain, reported on a visual analog scale (VAS), and the secondary outcome measures were TMJ function, including maximum active vertical opening (MAVO), maximum passive vertical opening (MPVO), left and right lateral movement (LLE, RLE). Pooled effect sizes were calculated using random effects models and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). Results A total of 28 randomized controlled trials were included. Laser therapy had a more significant effect in terms of VAS (SMD=-1.88; 95% CI=-2.46 to-1.30; P < 0.00001; I 2 =93%), MAVO (MD = 4.90; 95% CI= 3.29–6.50; P < 0.00001; I 2 =72%), MPVO (MD=5.8 2 ; 95% CI= 4.62–7.01; P < 0.00001; I 2 =40%) and RLE (MD = 0.73; 95% CI= 0.23–1.22; P = 0.004; I 2 = 0%) as compared to placebo group. However, there was no significant difference in LLE between two groups (MD= 0.35; 95% CI=-0.31–1.01; P = 0.30; I 2 =0%). Conclusions Laser therapy can effectively reduce pain but have small effect on improving mandibular movement of TMD patients. More well-designed RCTs with large sample sizes are needed for further validation. And these studies should report detailed laser parameters and provide complete outcome measure data.

Abstract:Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a collective term used to characterize a heterogeneous group of conditions involving the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and its contiguous tissues. Although the pathologies behind TMDs have not been completely explained, the symptoms associated with these disorders are similar and are most commonly manifest as pain in the orofacial region. In preliminary studies, botulinum toxin has been used successfully to treat various pain syndromes, including TMDs. Because of the complex nature of TMDs and proximity of affected muscles to facial nerves, correct injection technique and appropriate dosing guidelines are very important for successful results. This article describes common TMDs and their treatment with botulinum toxin. Dosing guidelines and illustrations of affected muscles and target injection sites are provided.
Effects of botulinum toxin type A in patients with painful temporomandibular joint disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Objective: To assess the therapeutic efficacy of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) for managing myofascial pain related to temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Methods: This study was conducted according to the PRISMA 2020 statement guidelines. The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched. Only randomized controlled trials were included. The primary outcome was a pain score on the visual analog scale, and the secondary outcomes were maximum mouth opening and adverse effects. The Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to assess risk bias. A meta-analysis of studies with the same interventions, controls, assessment methods, and follow-up durations was performed. Results: A total of 519 studies were retrieved, of which 20 randomized controlled trials were included in the qualitative analysis and six were included in the meta-analysis. The results showed that, compared with placebo, BTX-A injection was more effective at relieving myofascial pain, and its effect was similar to that of conventional methods. However, there was no difference in maximum mouth opening between the two groups. After the study assessment with the RoB 2.0 tool, six studies showed a low risk of bias, 13 studies showed some concerns regarding the reported results, and only one study showed a high risk of bias. Adverse effects of BTX-A injection were observed in four studies. Conclusions: In conclusion, BTX-A is effective at relieving pain in TMD patients but does not improve mouth opening. To minimize adverse effects, we recommend a low dose of BTX-A for TMD patients who do not experience complete pain relief from conservative treatments.

Abstract:Background: The reduction in joint load is a potential beneficial factor in managing osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This paper aims to compare the effectiveness of the intramuscular injection of botulinum toxin (BTX-A) as an adjunct to TMJ arthrocentesis plus viscosupplementation with arthrocentesis plus viscosupplementation alone in the management of TMJ osteoarthritis. Methods: A pilot clinical retrospective study examined TMJ osteoarthritis treatments. Patients were divided into two groups: Group A received BTX-A injections and arthrocentesis with viscosupplementation, while Group B received only arthrocentesis with viscosupplementation. The study assessed outcomes based on mouth opening (MO), pain at rest (PR), pain at mastication (PF), and masticatory efficiency (ME) at various time points (baseline (T0), 1 week (T1), 2 weeks (T2), 3 weeks (T3), and 4 weeks (T4)) up to 2 months after treatment. Results: The study included two groups, each with five patients. Group A received five weekly sessions of arthrocentesis plus viscosupplementation and a single BTX-A injection during the first arthrocentesis appointment. Group B underwent the five-session protocol of arthrocentesis plus viscosupplementation alone. MO, PF, PR, and ME improved quickly in T2 in both groups, but the improvement was of greater importance over the following weeks and lasted longer in Group A. Conclusions: Arthrocentesis with viscosupplementation associated with BTX-A was found to be more effective than arthrocentesis alone in improving clinical outcomes. This suggests that patients with TMJ osteoarthritis and myofascial pain may benefit from reduced muscle tone and joint load.

Abstract:Introduction: The most prevalent conditions in the population are temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), which are linked to a number of morbidities. A number of treatment options have been proposed, and some of the most successful ones include low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of two therapies-TENS treatment and LLLT-in the management of morbidities related to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Materials and methods: Based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 50 patients who had been sent to the oral medicine outpatient department and had been pre-diagnosed with TMJ disorders were randomly assigned to two groups, with 25 patients in each: Group I received TENS therapy, while Group II received LLLT. The acquired data was assessed statistically. Result: Both groups showed a substantial decrease in discomfort, an increase in mouth opening, and a decrease in muscular tenderness when compared to within groups. LLT was more effective than TENS for TMD treatment. Conclusion: While TENS and LLLT both had good results, LLLT appeared to outperform TENS therapy in terms of muscle tenderness factors.
Occlusal Force Characteristics of Masseteric Muscles after Intramuscular Injection of Botulinum Toxin A(BTX - A)for Treatment of Temporomandibular Disorder.

Abstract:Our aim was to evaluate the occlusal force and therapeutic efficacy of the masseteric muscles after intramuscular injection of botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) for the treatment of patients with concurrent temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and bruxism. Thirty patients with TMD associated with bruxism were randomised into three groups (n=10 in each group), and treated by bilateral intramuscular injection of BTX-A into the masseter, placebo, or control. We used an occlusal force analysis system to collect several measures of occlusal force such as duration of biting and closing, the maximum occlusal force, and the distribution of occlusal force. The occlusal force in the intercuspid position was reduced in all three groups. There was a significant difference between the BTX-A and placebo groups (F(df=1)=8.08, p=0.01) but not between the control group and the other two(F(df=1)=4.34, p=0.047). The duration of occlusion was significantly increased in the BTX-A group after 3 months' treatment (t=4.07, p=0.003). The asymmetrical distribution of occlusal force was reduced in all three groups, but not significantly so (Levene's test F(df=2)=0.25, p=0.78,ANOVA F(df=2)=0.50, p=0.61). Treatment of TMD with BTX-A is effective in reducing the occlusal force, but psychological intervention plays an important part in treatment.

Abstract:Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are complex pathologies responsible for chronic orofacial pain. Intramuscular injection of botulinum toxin A (BoNT/A) has shown effectiveness in knee and shoulder osteoarthritis, as well as in some TMDs such as masticatory myofascial pain, but its use remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of intra-articular BoNT/A injection in an animal model of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis. A rat model of temporomandibular osteoarthritis was used to compare the effects of intra-articular injection of BoNT/A, placebo (saline), and hyaluronic acid (HA). Efficacy was compared by pain assessment (head withdrawal test), histological analysis, and imaging performed in each group at different time points until day 30. Compared with the rats receiving placebo, those receiving intra-articular BoNT/A and HA had a significant decrease in pain at day 14. The analgesic effect of BoNT/A was evident as early as day 7, and lasted until day 21. Histological and radiographic analyses showed decrease in joint inflammation in the BoNT/A and HA groups. The osteoarthritis histological score at day 30 was significantly lower in the BoNT/A group than in the other two groups (p = 0.016). Intra-articular injection of BoNT/A appeared to reduce pain and inflammation in experimentally induced temporomandibular osteoarthritis in rats.

Abstract:Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a unilateral, paroxysmal, sharp, shooting, or jabbing pain that occurs in the trigeminal nerve divisions, including the ophthalmic (V1), maxillary (V2), and mandibular (V3) nerves. Typically, an episode is triggered by anything touching the face or teeth. TN is a clinical diagnosis with no specific diagnostic test; it is determined by the patient's medical history and pain description. Imaging is necessary to exclude secondary causes. The precise reason for TN is uncertain, but it is commonly believed to result from vascular compression of the trigeminal nerve root, typically near its origin in the pons. There are numerous surgical and medical treatment options available. The most frequently applied medical treatment therapies are carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine. Surgical alternatives are reserved for patients who do not respond to medical treatment. Botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) has emerged as a novel and promising alternative to surgery for individuals whose pain is unresponsive to medication. Multiple studies have established the safety and usefulness of BTX-A in treating TN, with the most significant benefits occurring between six weeks and three months after the surgery. This article reviews various studies published in the last 10 years regarding the therapeutic use of BTX-A in TN. These studies include various observational, clinical, pilot, and animal studies.

Abstract:The application of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to acupuncture points may produce effects similar to that of needle stimulation in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). This systematic review was conducted according to the Cochrane Collaboration guidelines and aimed to address clinical questions using the following strategy: Patient/Problem, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome (PICO). A comprehensive literature search was performed upto April 26, 2023, across nine electronic databases (BVS, PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), and Google Scholar) supplemented with gray literature. The risk of bias in randomized and nonrandomized clinical trials was assessed using two tools: risk-of-bias (RoB) 2 and Risk Of Bias In Non-randomised Studies—of Interventions (ROBINS-I). Meta-analysis involved the extraction of mean and standard deviation values for spontaneous pain and mouth opening levels. Seven studies were included in this review, all of which used LLLT. The applied wavelengths ranged from 690 to 810 nm without significant variations in light emission patterns. LLLT demonstrated a significant reduction in instantaneous pain levels (standard mean difference [SMD] = 3.85; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.09, 5.62; p < 0.003) and an improvement in instantaneous mouth opening ability (mean difference [SMD] = -7.15; 95% CI = -11.73, -2.58; p < 0.002), with low certainty of evidence. LLLT may alleviate symptoms in patients with TMD; however, caution should be exercised when interpreting the results because of protocol variations among studies and the limited number of studies included in the meta-analysis.

Abstract:Objective To investigate a new treatment to the half distortion of commissure.Methods Since 2003,there have been 20 cases of using Botulinum Toxin Type A to inject uninjured side of muscle group of depressor labii inferioris,in order to treat the half distortion of commissure caused by paralysis of marginal mandibular branch of cranial nerve.Results Both the 20 patients saw the distortion largely alleviated,without any complications until the end of the treatment.Conclusion Toxin Type A can be promoted as a safe and fairly effective treatment to the half distortion of commissure.
Study of the effect of botulinum toxin on electrophysiological monitoring during microvascular decomp-ression surgery for patients with hemifacial spasm

Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of botulinum toxin on electrophysiological monitoring during microvascular decompression surgery for patients with hemifacial spasm (HFS). Method A retrospective analysis was conducted on 121 patients who hospitalized in our hospital because of HFS from November 2014 to April 2015. They were divided into botulinum toxin group (30 cases) and non-botulinum toxin group (91 cases) according to preoperative ipsilateral acceptance of botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin group patients received 3 ~ 12 injection treatment of botulinum toxin. Intraoperative electrophysiological monitored mandibular branch, zygomatic branch latency and amplitude of two groups and the incidence of complications were compared between the two groups. After 1-year follow-up, symptom relief of the patients were evaluated, and the electric physiological monitoring results were compared between remission as well as non-remission patients and botulinum toxin group as well as non-botulinum toxin group. Result The lateral spread response (LSR) latency of zygomatic branch of facial nerve in non-botulinum toxin group was significantly shorter than botulinum toxin group (P < 0.05); there was no significantly associated to the prognosis of whether the electrophysiological monitoring of marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve disappearing alone and the marginal mandibular branches with electrophysiological monitoring disappear at the same time or not (P >0.05); patients inbotulinum toxin group zygomatic electrophysiology disappearing alone and non-botulinum toxin group patients whose zygomatic electrophysiology without disappeared were poor prognosis (P < 0.05). Conclusion Botulinum toxin can effectively delay zygomatic LSR latency, and the zygomatic disappearance of LSR can effectively predict the prognosis, which is more obvious in patients injected botulinum toxin.
Long-term Efficacy of Botulinum Toxin Type A for the Treatment of Habitual Dislocation of the Temporomandibular Joint

Abstract:Injection of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) into the lateral pterygoid muscles is a recently reported treatment for habitual dislocation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). We report five cases of dislocation in elderly patients with neurological or other severe systemic disease, and their successful treatment with one injection of BTX-A into the lateral pterygoid muscles. This is a relatively conservative option. Injection into the muscle is straightforward and can be done in outpatients with few complications. We recommend it as the first choice for patients with habitual dislocation and systemic or neurological diseases, particularly in the elderly.
Therapeutic Observation of Superficial Needling for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

Abstract:Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of superficial needling in treating temporomandibular joint disorder. Method Sixty patients with temporomandibular joint disorder were randomized into a treatment group and a control group, 30 in each group. The treatment group was intervened by superficial needling, and the patients were asked to repeatedly open and close mouth after the treatment; the control group was intervened by regular acupuncture. The treatment was given once a day, 10 d as a treatment course. The clinical efficacies were compared after 2 treatment courses.Result After the first treatment course, the total effective rate was 89.7% in the treatment group versus 86.2% in the control group; after the second course, the total effective rate was 96.6% in the treatment group versus 93.1% in the control group. There was a significant difference in comparing the therapeutic efficacy between the two groups after the second course (P<0.05). The relapse rate was 5.0% in the treatment group versus 33.3% in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).Conclusion Superficial needling is an effective method in treating temporomandibular joint disorder.
Comparative Efficacy of Non-Invasive Therapies in Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a multifaceted disorder impacting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), causing substantial discomfort and functional limitations. This systematic review aims to comprehensively assess the effectiveness of non-invasive treatment modalities for TMJ dysfunction, prioritizing a definitive protocol to ensure patient safety and enhance quality of life. Employing the PRISMA guidelines, we meticulously analyzed 20 studies from a pool of 1,417 articles sourced from databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Medline. These studies underscore the multifarious nature of TMD and the varied responses to treatments such as physical therapy, laser therapy, ultrasound and electrical stimulation, splint therapy, injections, and arthrocentesis. Notably, the review highlights the paramount importance of precise diagnosis, often through surface electromyography, followed by a tailored treatment approach integrating manual therapy, counseling, and splint therapy. The systematic analysis revealed that while certain treatments such as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and low-level laser therapy showed limited efficacy, combination therapies, especially those involving manual therapy, counseling, and splint therapy, demonstrated substantial improvement in reducing pain, depression, and anxiety. The findings advocate for a non-invasive, patient-centric approach, emphasizing education and symptom management before considering more invasive procedures such as injections and arthrocentesis. The review identifies the need for more comprehensive, longitudinal studies to establish a standardized, evidence-based treatment protocol for TMJ dysfunction, aiming to improve patient outcomes holistically.

Abstract:Evaluation of the effect of low level LASER therapy versus printed occlusal splint on mandibular movements in patients with TMJ muscular disorders by using ARCUS digmaAbstract: Objective:This research was carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of LLLT with Michigan splint vs the use of Michigan splint only on the range of mandibular movements in patients with muscular disorders by the use of ARCUS digma.Materials and methods: It is an in-vivo study in which 14 patients were selected from the Outpatient Clinic of Diagnosis Department and Prosthodontics Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Ain Shams University. Afterwards they were randomly divided into 2 equal groups, 7 patients in each group. Group (A), patients in this group received hard occlusal stabilization splint (Michigan splint) constructed on the maxillary teeth. Group (B), patients in this group received Michigan splint and an applications of low level LASER therapy (LLLT) using semiconductor InGaAsp 940 nm diode LASER type.Results: It was found that group (B) recorded statistically significant higher median horizontal condylar inclination, higher mean Maximum Mouth opening (MMO), and lower median pain score than group (A).Conclusion: Low level LASER therapy with the use of Michigan splint showed a reduction in the pain associated with TMD, and showed an improvement in the range of mandibular movements. The effectiveness of botulinum toxin for temporomandibular disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:The current body of research on utilizing botulinum toxin (BTX) to manage temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) has not yet yielded definitive conclusions. The primary objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of BTX in pain reduction for TMDs compared to placebo and other treatments. The secondary outcomes evaluated were adverse events, maximum mouth opening, bruxism events, and maximum occlusal force. A literature search was performed on PubMed, Dimension Publication, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The RoB 2 tool was used for quality assessment. The mean differences in pain scores were estimated to measure the effect of BTX on pain reduction. For adverse events, the risk ratio for the incidence of side effects was calculated. Two hundred and sixty non-duplicate articles were identified; however, only 14 RCTS were included in this review. The total study population included 395 patients. The overall risk of bias showed a low to moderate quality of evidence. Results from 6 studies were reported only narratively; four studies were used for meta-analysis on pain reduction, and five were used for meta-analysis on adverse events. The control used in the meta-analysis was placebo injections. Results of the meta-analysis for pain reduction were statistically insignificant for the BTX group with mean differences at MD = −1.71 (95% CI, −2.87 to −0.5) at one month, -1.53 (95% CI, −2.80 to −0.27) at three months, and -1.33 (95% CI, −2.74 to 0.77) at six months. This showed that BTX treatment was not significantly better than placebo for a reduction in pain scores at 1, 3, and 6 months. Regarding safety, the placebo group showed a relative risk of 1.34 (95%CI, 0.48–6.78) and 1.17 (95%CI, 0.54–3.88) at 1 and 3 months respectively. However, the risks were not statistically significant. There was also no difference in the effectiveness of BTX compared to placebo and other treatments for maximum mouth opening, bruxism events, and maximum occlusal force. BTX was not associated with better outcomes in terms of pain reduction, adverse events, maximum mouth opening, bruxism events, and maximum occlusal force. More high-quality RCTs are needed to better understand this topic.

Effectiveness of Laser Therapy in Treatment of Temporomandibular Joint and Muscle Pain

Abstract:Background/Objectives: Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) express a condition derived from a broad spectrum of etiological factors and clinical manifestations. Many treatment options have been developed for TMDs; nevertheless, conservative and non-invasive approaches ought to be prioritized. Laser therapy is an effective treatment for pain management due to its non-invasive nature and capacity for tissue regeneration. This review aimed at bringing an overview of the present evidence regarding the efficiency of laser therapy on myofascial or temporomandibular joint disorders pain. Methods: The search was conducted in four electronic databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Scopus, of studies published between January 1997 and January 2023. The following terms have been extensively searched: "laser treatment", pain management", "temporomandibular joint disorders", "masseter muscle pain", "pterygoid muscle pain", and "temporal muscle pain". The inclusion criteria were original papers, available in full text, and written in English. Cohen's Kappa coefficient was used to assess the inter-rater reliability for article selection. The methodological quality was assessed with the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for randomized controlled trials and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's quality assessment tool for before-after studies with no control group. Results: Out of 846 identified records, 7 studies were included, of which 5 were randomized controlled trials. The inter-rater reliability for article selection showed an almost perfect agreement (Cohen's Kappa = 0.832, p < 0.001). The protocol of laser application was not standardized; the laser wavelength ranged from 633 to 940 nm, with a power output range from 25 to 1600 mW. The number of sessions varied from 3 to 12, with a frequency of application from 1 time per week to 3 times per week. All studies reported pain reduction after laser therapy. Conclusions: Laser therapy is an efficient method to treat TMDs related to muscle pain. To accomplish the desired results, a standard procedure must be followed; however, the protocol is still not fully designed.
Efficacy of Hyaluronic Acid Injection in Superior Joint Space for the Treatment of Temporomandibular Disorder in Taiwan

Abstract:Background: Hyaluronic acid (HA) injections are gaining attention as a treatment option to manage symptoms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, but updated evidence-based data on their effectiveness are actually lacking. Objectives: To analyse the effect of superior space injection of HA in patients diagnosed with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders by magnetic resonance imaging study and clinical examination. Methods: 46 patients with unilateral or bilateral osteoarthritis were included. The patients were evaluated before the procedures and at the first and third month after three times of HA injection. To evaluate clinical success at the third month after therapy, the criteria included in the study were: maximal mouth opening (MMO) 35 mm or more; no more tenderness over TMJ area or masticatory muscles. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was also performed at pre-treatment and the third month after therapy. Findings: In most of cases, MMO was significantly increased and no more tenderness over bilateral joint area after 3 times of HA injection. The ratios of the postoperative condyle head degenerative changes in MRI studies were also decreased after the therapy. Conclusion: It is sufficient to use HA injection in patients with osteoarthritis or disc without reduction and result in better condylar reparative remodelling and improvement in jaw function.
