Abstract:In the future wireless networks, ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) plays an important role on mission-critical applications, where the end-to-end (E2E) latency and reliability are required to achieve 1 ms and 99.999%. Such stringent requirements bring significant challenges for the URLLC transmission scheme design. To address the abovementioned problem, a joint time-frequency diversity based uplink grant-free transmission scheme for URLLC is proposed in this paper, where each packet is transmitted following the arrival-and-go manner without waiting for the access and resource grant from the network. Specifically, by dividing each transmission time interval (TTI) into a series of mini-slots, each packet is not only transmitted on multiple randomly selected channels in each mini-slot, but also replicated in all mini-slots in each TTI. In this way, the time and frequency diversities are utilized simultaneously such that the latency and reliability requirements can be efficiently supported. The transmission reliability is also analyzed by taking both the transmission collision probability and packet loss probability into consideration. Then, an optimization problem is formulated, which aims to maximize the number of user equipments (UE) that can be supported by the network while meeting the latency and reliability requirements as well as satisfying the constraints on the number of selected channels and the length of each mini-slot. By developing a two-step algorithm, the formulated optimization problem is efficiently solved. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing schemes that are only built upon the frequency diversity or time-domain replica.
