Abstract:Let $F_k$ denote the $k$-fan consisting of $k$ triangles which intersect in exactly one common vertex, and $S_{n,k}$ the complete split graph of order $n$ consisting of a clique on $k$ vertices and an independent set on the remaining vertices in which each vertex of the clique is adjacent to each vertex of the independent set. In this paper, it is shown that $S_{n,k}$ is the unique graph attaining the maximum signless Laplacian spectral radius among all graphs of order $n$ containing no $F_k$, provided that $k\geq 2$ and $n\geq 3k^2-k-2$.

Abstract:It is well-known that Brualdi-Hoffman-Turán-type problem asks what is the maximum spectral radius $\lambda(G)$ of an $F$-free graph $G$ with $m$ edges? It can be viewed as a spectral characterization on the existence of the subgraph $F$ in $G.$ A nice contribution on the above problem is due to Nikiforov (2002), which states that $\lambda(G)\leqslant \sqrt{2m(1-1/r)}$ for every $K_{r+1}$-free graph of size $m$. Let $\theta_{1,p,q}$ be the theta graph, which is obtained by connecting two vertices with 3 internally disjoint paths of lengths $1,p,q$, respectively. Let $F_k$ be the fan graph, i.e., the join of a $K_1$ and a path $P_{k-1}$, and let $F_{k,3}$ be the friendship graph obtained from $k$ triangles by sharing a common vertex. In this paper, we use $k$-core method and spectral techniques to resolve some spectral extrema of graphs with fixed size. Firstly, we show that, for $k\geqslant3$ and $m\geqslant \frac{9}{4}k^6+6k^5+46k^4+56k^3+196k^2$, if $G$ is $F_{2k+2}$-free, then $\lambda(G)\leqslant\frac{k-1+\sqrt{4m-k^2+1}}{2},$ equality holds if and only if $G \cong K_k\vee(\frac{m}{k}-\frac{k-1}{2})K_1.$ Secondly, we show that, for $k\geqslant 3$ and $m\geqslant \frac{9}{4}k^6+6k^5+46k^4+56k^3+196k^2$, if $G$ is $F_{k,3}$-free of size $m$, then $\lambda(G)\leqslant\frac{k-1+\sqrt{4m-k^2+1}}{2},$ equality holds if and only if $G\cong K_k\vee(\frac{m}{k}-\frac{k-1}{2})K_1$. This confirms a conjecture proposed by Li, Lu and Peng [Discrete Math. 346(2023)113680]. Finally, we identify the $\theta_{1,p,q}$-free graph of size $m$ having the largest spectral radius, where $q\geqslant p\geqslant 3$ and $p+q\geqslant 2k+1.$ Some further research problems are also proposed.

In this paper, we show that of all the connected graphs with n vertices and k cut edges, the maximal spectral radius is obtained uniquely at Knk, where Knk is a graph obtained by joining k independent vertices to one vertex of Kn−k. We also discuss the limit point of the maximal spectral radius.

Abstract:A well-known result of Nosal states that a graph $G$ with $m$ edges and $\lambda(G) > \sqrt{m}$ contains a triangle. Nikiforov [Combin. Probab. Comput. 11 (2002)] extended this result to cliques by showing that if $\lambda (G) > \sqrt{2m(1-1/r)}$, then $G$ contains a copy of $K_{r+1}$. Let $C_k^+$ be the graph obtained from a cycle $C_k$ by adding an edge to two vertices with distance two, and let $F_k$ be the friendship graph consisting of $k$ triangles that share a common vertex. Recently, Zhai, Lin and Shu [European J. Combin. 95 (2021)], Sun, Li and Wei [Discrete Math. 346 (2023)], and Li, Lu and Peng [Discrete Math. 346 (2023)] proved that if $ m\ge 8$ and $\lambda (G) \ge \frac{1}{2} (1+\sqrt{4m-3})$, then $G$ contains a copy of $C_5,C_5^+$ and $F_2$, respectively, unless $G=K_2\vee \frac{m-1}{2}K_1$. In this paper, we give a unified extension by showing that such a graph contains a copy of $V_5$, where $V_5=K_1\vee P_4$ is the join of a vertex and a path on four vertices. Our result extends the aforementioned results since $C_5,C_5^+$ and $F_2$ are proper subgraphs of $V_5$. In addition, we prove that if $m\ge 33$ and $\lambda (G) \ge 1+ \sqrt{m-2}$, then $G$ contains a copy of $F_3$, unless $G=K_3\vee \frac{m-3}{3}K_1$. This confirms a conjecture on the friendship graph $F_k$ in the case $k=3$. Finally, we conclude some spectral extremal graph problems concerning the large fan graphs and wheel graphs.

Abstract:The (k,r) -fan, denoted by Fk,r , is the graph consisting of k copies of the complete graph Kr which intersect in a single vertex. Desai et al. [7] proved that EXsp(n,Fk,r)⊆EX(n,Fk,r) for sufficiently large n , where EXsp(n,Fk,r) and EX(n,Fk,r) are the sets of n -vertex Fk,r -free graphs with maximum spectral radius and maximum size, respectively. In this paper, the set EXsp(n,Fk,r) is uniquely determined for n large enough. Let Hs,t1,...,tk be the graph consisting of s triangles and k odd cycles of lengths t1,...,tk≥5 intersecting in exactly one common vertex, denoted by Hs,k for short. Li and Peng [12] showed that EXsp(n,Hs,k)⊆EX(n,Hs,k) for n large enough. In this paper, the set EXsp(n,Hs,k) is uniquely characterized for sufficiently large n .

Abstract:Let F=∪i=1kSdi be the union of pairwise vertex-disjoint k stars of order d1+1,…,dk+1, respectively, where k≥2 and d1≥⋯≥dk≥1. In this paper, we present two sharp upper bounds for the spectral radius of F-free (bipartite) graphs and characterize all corresponding extremal graphs. Moreover, the minimum least eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of an F-free graph and all extremal graphs are obtained.

Abstract:We consider the set Gn,k of graphs of order n with the chromatic number k≥2. In this note, we prove that in Gn,k the Turán graph Tn,k has the maximal spectral radius; and Pn if k=2, Cn if k=3 and n is odd, Cn−11 if k=3 and n is even, Kk(l) if k≥4 has the minimal spectral radius. Thus we answer a problem raised by Cao [D.S. Cao, Index function of graphs, J. East China Norm. Univ. Sci. Ed. 4 (1987) 1–8 (in Chinese). MR89m:05084] and Hong [Y. Abstract:The generalized Turán number $ex(n,K_s,H)$ is the maximum number of complete graph $K_s$ in an $H$-free graph on $n$ vertices. Let $F_k$ be the friendship graph consisting of $k$ triangles. Erdős and Sós (1976) determined the value of $ex(n,K_3,F_2)$. Alon and Shikhelman (2016) proved that $ex(n,K_3, F_k)\le (9k-15)(k+1)n.$ In this paper, by using a method developed by Chung and Frankl in hypergraph theory, we determine the exact value of $ex(n,K_3,F_k)$ and the extremal graph for any $F_k$ when $n\ge 4k^3$.

Abstract:Li, Shiu, Chan and Chang [On the spectral radius of graphs with connectivity at most k, J. Math. Chem., 46 (2009), 340-346] studied the spectral radius of graphs of order n with κ(G) ≤ k and showed that among those graphs, the maximum spectral radius is obtained uniquely at $K_k^n$, which is the graph obtained by joining k edges from k vertices of K n − 1 to an isolated vertex. In this paper, we study the spectral radius of graphs of order n with κ(G) ≤ k and minimum degree δ(G) ≥ k . We show that among those graphs, the maximum spectral radius is obtained uniquely at K k + (K δ − k + 1 ∪ K n − δ − 1).

Abstract:Let $H_7$ denote the $7$-vertex \textit{fan graph} consisting of a $6$-vertex path plus a vertex adjacent to each vertex of the path. Let $K_3 \vee \frac{m-3}{3}K_1$ be the graph obtained by joining each vertex of a triangle $K_3$ to $\frac{m-3}{3}$ isolated vertices. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is an $H_{7}$-free graph with size $m\geq 33$, then the spectral radius $ \rho(G)\leq 1+\sqrt{m-2},$ equality holds if and only if $G\cong K_3 \vee \frac{m-3}{3}K_1$ (possibly, with some isolated vertices).

Abstract:Let $F_k$ be the (friendship) graph obtained from $k$ triangles by sharing a common vertex. The $F_k$-free graphs of order $n$ which attain the maximal spectral radius was firstly characterized by Cioabă, Feng, Tait and Zhang [Electron. J. Combin. 27 (4) (2020)], and later uniquely determined by Zhai, Liu and Xue [Electron. J. Combin. 29 (3) (2022)] under the condition that $n$ is sufficiently large. In this paper, we get rid of the condition on $n$ being sufficiently large if $k=2$. The graph $F_2$ is also known as the bowtie. We show that the unique $n$-vertex $F_2$-free spectral extremal graph is the balanced complete bipartite graph adding an edge in the vertex part with smaller size if $n\ge 7$, and the condition $n\ge 7$ is tight. Our result is a spectral generalization of a theorem of Erdős, Füredi, Gould and Gunderson [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 64 (1995)], which states that $\mathrm{ex}(n,F_2)=\left\lfloor {n^2}/{4} \right\rfloor +1$. Moreover, we study the spectral extremal problem for $F_k$-free graphs with given number of edges. In particular, we show that the unique $m$-edge $F_2$-free spectral extremal graph is the join of $K_2$ with an independent set of $\frac{m-1}{2}$ vertices if $m\ge 8$, and the condition $m\ge 8$ is tight.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a sharp upper bound for the spectral radius of an $n$-vertex graph without $F$-minor for sufficient large $n$, where $F$ is obtained from the complete graph $K_r$ by deleting disjointed paths. Furthermore, the graphs which achieved the sharp bound are characterized. This result may be regarded to be an extended revision of the number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph without $F$-minor.

Abstract:In this paper we study three families of graphs, one is the graphs of order n with connectivity κ(G)≤k and minimum degree δ(G)≥k. We show that among the graphs in this family, the maximum spectral radius is obtained uniquely at Kk+(Kδ−k+1∪Kn−δ−1). Another family of the graphs we study is the family of bipartite graphs with order n and connectivity k. We show that among the graphs in this family the maximum spectral radius is obtained at a graph modified from K⌊n/2⌋,n−1−⌊n/2⌋. The third family of graphs we have studied is the family of graphs with order n, connectivity k and independence number r. We determine the graphs in this family that have the maximum spectral radius.

Abstract:Let phi(n, H) be the largest integer such that, for all graphs G on n vertices, the edge set E(G) can be partitioned into at most phi(n, H) parts, of which every part either is a single edge or forms a graph isomorphic to H. Pikhurko and Sousa conjectured that phi(n, H) = ex (n, H) for chi(H) >= 3 and all sufficiently large n, where ex (n, H) denotes the maximum number of edges of graphs on n vertices that do not contain H as a subgraph. A (k, r)-fan is a graph on (r-1)k+1 vertices consisting of k cliques of order r that intersect in exactly one common vertex. In this article, we verify Pikhurko and Sousa's conjecture for (k, r)-fans. The result also generalizes a result of Liu and Sousa. (C) 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Let D be a digraph with vertex set V(D). A partition of V(D) into k acyclic sets is called a k-coloring of D. The minimum integer k for which there exists a k-coloring of D is the dichromatic number χ(D) of the digraph D. Denote Gn,k the set of the digraphs of order n with the dichromatic number k≥2. In this note, we characterize the digraph which has the maximal spectral radius in Gn,k. Our result generalizes the result of [8] by Feng et al.

Abstract:A well-known theorem of Mantel states that every $n$-vertex graph with more than $\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor $ edges contains a triangle. An interesting problem in extremal graph theory studies the minimum number of edges contained in triangles among graphs with a prescribed number of vertices and edges. Erdős, Faudree and Rousseau (1992) showed that a graph on $n$ vertices with more than $\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor $ edges contains at least $2\lfloor n/2\rfloor +1$ edges in triangles. Such edges are called triangular edges. In this paper, we present a spectral version of the result of Erdős, Faudree and Rousseau. Using the supersaturation-stability and the spectral technique, we prove that every $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $\lambda (G) \ge \sqrt{\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor}$ contains at least $2 \lfloor {n}/{2} \rfloor -1$ triangular edges, unless $G$ is a balanced complete bipartite graph. The method in our paper has some interesting applications. Firstly, the supersaturation-stability can be used to revisit a conjecture of Erdős concerning with the booksize of a graph, which was initially proved by Edwards (unpublished), and independently by Khadžiivanov and Nikiforov (1979). Secondly, our method can improve the bound on the order $n$ of a graph by dropping the condition on $n$ being sufficiently large, which is obtained from the triangle removal lemma. Thirdly, the supersaturation-stability can be applied to deal with the spectral extremal graph problems on counting triangles, which was recently studied by Ning and Zhai (2023).

Abstract:For integer $k\geq2,$ a spanning $k$-ended-tree is a spanning tree with at most $k$ leaves. Motivated by the closure theorem of Broersma and Tuinstra [Independence trees and Hamilton cycles, J. Graph Theory 29 (1998) 227--237], we provide tight spectral conditions to guarantee the existence of a spanning $k$-ended-tree in a connected graph of order $n$ with extremal graphs being characterized. Moreover, by adopting Kaneko's theorem [Spanning trees with constraints on the leaf degree, Discrete Appl. Math. 115 (2001) 73--76], we also present tight spectral conditions for the existence of a spanning tree with leaf degree at most $k$ in a connected graph of order $n$ with extremal graphs being determined, where $k\geq1$ is an integer.
