Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising candidates as natural gas adsorbents because of their porous feature and high structural tunability. In the gas adsorption/desorption process, MOFs are often under complicated physical environments, such as varied pressure and temperature; however, limited attention has been paid to the effect of pressure on their thermal properties. In this work, taking ZIF-8 with four different functional groups (-H, -CH3, -Cl, and -Br) as an example, we investigate the influence of functional group substitution and pressure on the thermal conductivity of MOFs through equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. A reduction in thermal conductivity induced by the functional group substitution is observed, which is caused by a damping effect of the acoustic mismatch. Regarding the impact of pressure, the thermal conductivity of ZIF-8 is found to decrease first with increasing hydrostatic pressure. When the pressure exceeds a critical value, a sudden rise is observed in the thermal conductivity of ZIF-8 because a phase transformation from the porous phase to the dense phase is found in this process. The complicated influence of pressure on thermal conductivity is explained by a competition between the aggravation of phonon scattering and the enhancement of volumetric heat capacity in ZIF-8 with increasing pressure. This work is expected to provide molecular insights into the functional group- and pressure-dependent thermal transport of MOFs and thus facilitate their applications in energy storage and gas absorption.

Abstract:Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-derived porous carbons are a new subclass of N-doped porous carbon materials showing great potential for many applications. However, water vapor is present in various industrial applications, and previous studies have tended to neglect water adsorption on ZIF-derived porous carbons. In this study, ZIF-8-derived porous carbon materials exhibiting different surface chemistry and pore structure have been prepared, and used to characterize the behavior of water adsorption. Investigations suggest that water uptake at P/P-0 < 0.2 is positively correlated with the N content, and that pyridinic-N and pyrrolic-N species make the dominant contribution to this water uptake. Strong polarization of surface structure occurs in pyridinic-N and pyrrolic-N species, which provides strong electrostatic interactions between these species and water, leading to an increase in the low-pressure adsorption capacity. As the pressure is increased, the water adsorption process becomes highly dependent upon the porous structure, and there is a critical pore width above which pore-filling occurs. Our results indicate that water uptake at P/P-0 = 0.6, 0.8, and 0.9 is indeed directly proportional to cumulative pore volume with pore widths of the 12, 22 and 40 angstrom, respectively. Thus, the small micropores of < 12 angstrom are filled first at P/P-0 < 0.6, followed by the larger micropores of 12-22 angstrom at 0.6 < P/ P-0 < 0.8, and finally the mesopores of 22-40 angstrom at 0.8 < P/P-0 < 0.9. The results presented in this work should be useful for the selection and construction of ZIF-derived porous carbon materials for applications where water is involved.
Alcohol-Based Adsorption Heat Pumps using Hydrophobic Metal-Organic Frameworks

To assess the performance of adsorption heat pumps and cooling systems, here we discuss a multistep approach based on the processing of adsorption data combined with a thermodynamic model. The process provides properties of interest, such as the coefficient of performance, the working capacity, the specific heat or cooling effect, or the released heat upon adsorption and desorption cycles, and it also has the advantage of identifying the optimal conditions for each adsorbent-fluid pair. To test this method, we select several metal-organic frameworks that differ in topology, chemical composition, and pore size, which we validate with available experiments. Adsorption equilibrium curves were calculated using molecular simulations to describe the adsorption mechanisms of methanol and ethanol as working fluids in the selected adsorbents. Then, using a thermodynamic model we calculate the energetic properties combined with iterative algorithms that simultaneously vary all the required working conditions. We discuss the strong influence of operating temperatures on the performance of heat pump devices. Our findings point to the highly hydrophobic metal azolate framework MAF-6 as a very good candidate for heating and cooling applications for its high working capacity and excellent energy efficiency.

Abstract:Adsorption-driven heat pumps (AHPs) powered by low-grade waste heat and solar energy are promising to reduce the energy consumption for cooling and heating. Seeking novel high-performing adsorbents of AHPs is the key to improve their cooling/heating performance. Very recently, the potential use of covalent-organic frameworks (C0Fs) adsorbents of AHPs has won increasing research interests. However, the adsorption cooling/heating performance of COFs under varying working conditions is still unexplored. In this study, COF-5 was synthesized and tested to obtain the adsorption isotherms of ethanol working fluid. For comparison, three commonly used metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), including Cu-BTC, MIL-101(Cr), and ZIF-8, were also investigated. The cooling/heating performance of COF-5/ethanol and MOF/ethanol working pairs was evaluated by mathematical modelling based on the basic thermodynamic cycle of AHPs. The results demonstrated that COF-5 with the high coefficient of performance for cooling/heating (COPC/COPH) under wide temperature lift (Delta T-lift) outperformed MOFs, especially for cooling.

Water Adsorption Dynamics on Metal–Organic Framework MOF-801: Comparative Study of Loose and Glued Grains, and Coatings

Abstract:Adsorption heat transformation and storage (AHTS) is an environmentally benign and energy-saving alternative to common compression chillers and heat pumps. The low specific power (SP) of adsorption systems is a key drawback that hinders their broader dissemination. The optimization of adsorption dynamics is a prerequisite for SP enhancement. In this work, we studied the dynamics of water vapor adsorption on MOF-801—a promising adsorbent for AHTS. For the first time, two configurations of compact MOF-801 bed, namely, grains glued to the surface of a metal support and thin adsorbent coatings, are prepared, and their porous structure is characterized. The water adsorption dynamics is compared with a common loose grains configuration. The main findings are: (a) the binder can both accelerate and decelerate the water adsorption, and its chemical nature is subject to careful selection; (b) at the initial time, heat transfer between the support and adsorbent bed controls the adsorption rate, and, at a longer time, mass transfer starts to affect it; (c) polyvinylpyrrolidone, bentonite, thermal grease, and hydroxyethylcellulose increase the heat transfer coefficients and accelerate adsorption; polyvinyl alcohol and polyaniline slow it down; and (d) for the coatings prepared with polyvinylpyrrolidone, an SP of 1.6–5.1 kW/kg can be achieved, which is about twice that for the loose grains. The new configurations can be recommended for effective but expensive adsorbents such as MOFs, and their implementation will contribute to the further spread of AHTS technology.

Defective Zr-Fumarate MOFs Enable High-Efficiency Adsorption Heat Allocations

Abstract:Adsorption-driven heat transfer devices incorporating an efficient "adsorbent-water" working pair are attracting great attention as a green and sustainable technology to address the huge global energy demands for cooling and heating. Herein, we report the improved heat transfer performance of a defective Zr fumarate metal-organic framework (MOF) prepared in a water solvent (Zr-Fum HT). This material exhibits an S-shaped water sorption isotherm (P/P0 = 0.05-0.2), excellent working capacity (0.497 mLH2O mL-1MOF) under adsorption-driven cooling/chiller working conditions (Tadsorption(ads) = 30 °C, Tcondensation (con) = 30 °C, and Tdesorption(des) = 80 °C), very high coefficient of performances for both cooling (0.83) and heating (1.76) together with a relatively low driving temperature at 80 °C, a remarkable heat storage capacity (423.6 kW h m-3MOF), and an outstanding evaporation heat (343.8 kW h m-3MOF). The level of performance of the resultant Zr-Fum HT MOF is above those of all existing benchmark water adsorbents including MOF-801 previously synthesized in the N,N-dimethylformamide solvent under regeneration at 80 °C which is accessible from the solar source. This is coupled with many other decisive advantages including green synthesis and high proven chemical and mechanical robustness. The microscopic water adsorption mechanism of Zr-Fum HT at the origin of its excellent water adsorption performance was further explored computationally based on the construction of an atomistic defective model online with the experimental data gained from a subtle combination of characterization techniques.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl alcohol)-sodium alginate composite hydrogels were first introduced to synthesize robust and well-intergrown zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF)/polymer hollow fiber membranes. Through enough adsorption interaction with metal ions by chelation, sufficient nucleation sites for in situ metal-organic framework (MOF) preparation are provided. Using this method, we can not only easily prepare defect-free MOF membranes ignoring the complex modification process and seed deposition but also structurally fix crystalline MOF layers and greatly improve the stiffness and durability of MOF composite membranes. The strategy also gives the appropriate level of generality for synthesis of versatile dense MOF membranes on a variety of polymeric supports. The fabricated ZIF-8/polyethersulfone membrane presented remarkable gas separation performance with H2 permeance of as high as 9.66 × 10-7 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-1 and a high H2/CO2 separation factor of up to 29.0.

Abstract:Abstract Developing efficient and stable water adsorbents for adsorption‐driven heat transfer technology still remains a challenge due to the lack of efficient strategies to enhance low‐pressure water uptakes. The authors herein demonstrate that the immobilization of Lewis basic nitrogen sites into metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can improve water uptake and target benchmark coefficient of performances (COPs) for cooling and heating. They present the water sorption properties of a chemically stable MOF (termed as Zr‐adip), designed by incorporating hydrophilic nitrogen sites into the adsorbent MIP‐200. Zr‐adip exhibits S‐shaped sorption isotherms with an extremely high water uptake of 0.43 g g−1 at 303 K and P/P0 = 0.25, higher than MIP‐200 (0.39 g g−1), KMF‐1 (0.39 g g−1) and MOF‐303 (0.38 g g−1). Theoretical calculations reveal that the incorporated N sites can serve as secondary adsorption sites to moderately interact with water, providing more binding sites to strengthen the water binding affinity. Zr‐adip achieves exceptionally high COPs of 0.79 (cooling) and 1.75 (heating) with a low driving temperature of 70 °C, outperforming MIP‐200 (0.78 and 1.53) and KMF‐1 (0.75 and 1.74). Combined with its ultrahigh stability, excellent cycling performance, and easy regeneration, Zr‐adip represents one of the best water adsorbents for adsorption‐driven cooling and heating.

Abstract:The use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for adsorption cooling has won increasing research interests due to their outstanding adsorption performance. Zr-MOFs with relatively stable water stability and distinct structure properties are potential adsorbents for cooling. In this work, three Zr-MOFs: UiO-66 UiO-67 and NU-1000 with varying pore sizes were synthesized, and their water and ethanol adsorption isotherms were measured. The specific cooling effects (SCE) and coefficient of performance (COP) of MOF/water and MOF/ethanol working pairs in adsorption cooling system (ACS) were evaluated by adsorption system modeling. The results revealed that the MOFs with small pores and low steps (P/P-0) (i.e. UiO-66) in isotherms are favorable for water working fluid, which can achieve high SCE and COP at relative low temperatures. In contrast, MOFs with large pores and suitable steps (i.e. NU-1000) is preferential for ethanol working fluid due to the high uptake. Although water working fluid generally exhibited higher SCE and COP than ethanol, MOF/ethanol outperformed MOF/water because the equivalent cooling performance can be achieved at low temperature as well as the high recycle stability of MOFs/ethanol working pairs. Structure–property relationship of metal–organic frameworks for alcohol-based adsorption-driven heat pumps via high-throughput computational screening

Abstract:Adsorption-driven heat pumps (AHPs) based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been garnering rapidly growing research interests due to their outstanding adsorption performance. However, the quick discovery of potential MOF candidates for cooling/heating from a large number of MOFs is still a hurdle for developing highly efficient AHPs. In this work, we performed high-throughput computational screening based on grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations to assess the adsorption cooling efficiencies (i.e., coefficient of performance for cooling, COPC) of 1527 computationally ready experimental (CoRE) MOF structures using ethanol as the working fluid. On the basis of the obtained correlations between the MOF structures, properties, adsorption performance, and adsorption cooling efficiency, we found that the pore size of 10-15 angstrom, rather than larger pores, was favorable for both ethanol working capacity (W) and COPC. Moreover, both W and averaged enthalpy of adsorption (H-ads) played dominant roles in determining the COPC value. Principle component analysis (PCA) and decision tree (DT) modeling revealed that there is interplay between the pore size, W, and H-ads. For MOFs with low working capacities (W 0.27 g g(-1)), large pore size is favorable for COPC; for MOFs with high working capacities (W > 0.27 g g(-1)), low H-ads is more important for COPC. Furthermore, the top-performing MOFs exhibited stepwise adsorption and low Henry's constant, both of which are beneficial for COPC. In addition, we revealed that the incommensurate total interaction energy of MOF-ethanol pairs between the preheating and desorption processes will benefit W, thereby eventually leading to improved COPC, and vice versa. Finally, the evolutionary tendency of screening validated our screening strategy and structure-property relationship, which was also supported by the cooling efficiency predicted by the mathematical model using experimentally measured isotherms.

Abstract:Thermal batteries based on a reversible adsorption/desorption of a working fluid (water, methanol, ammonia) rather than the conventional vapor compression is a promising alternative to exploit waste thermal energy for heat reallocation. In this context, there is an increasing interest to find novel porous solids able to adsorb a high energy density of working fluid under low relative vapor pressure condition combined with an easy ability of regeneration (desorption) at low temperature, which are the major requirements for adsorption driven heat pumps and chillers. The porous crystalline hybrid materials named Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOF) represent a great source of inspiration for sorption based-applications owing to their tunable chemical and topological features associated with a large variability of pore sizes. Recently, we have designed a new MOF named MIL-160 (MIL stands for Materials of Institut Lavoisier), isostructural to CAU-10, built from the assembly of corner sharing aluminum chains octahedra AlO4(OH)2 with the 2,5-furandicarboxylic linker substituting the pristine organic linker, 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate. This ligand replacement strategy proved to enhance both the hydrophilicity of the MOF and its amount of water adsorbed at low p/p0. This designed solid was synthesized and its chemical stability/adsorption performances verified. Here, we have extended this study by incorporating other polar heterocyclic linkers and a comparative computational study of the water adsorption performances of these novel structures has been performed. To that purpose, the cell and geometry optimizations of all hypothetical frameworks were first performed at the density functional theory level and their water adsorption isotherms were further predicted by using force-field based Grand-Canonical Monte Carlo simulations. This study reveals the ease tunable water affinity of MOF for the desired application.

Abstract:Adsorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) has vast potential for addressing global water shortage. Despite innovations in adsorbent materials, fundamental understanding of the physical processes involved in the AWH cycle and how material properties impact the theoretical limits of AWH is lacking. Here, we develop a generalized thermodynamic framework to elucidate the interplay between adsorbent properties and operating conditions for optimal AWH performance. Our analysis considers the temperature dependence of adsorption, which is critical but has largely been overlooked in past work. Using metal-organic framework (MOF) as an example, we show that the peak energy efficiencies of single-stage and dual-stage AWH devices, after considering temperature-dependent adsorption, increased by 30% and 100%, respectively, compared with previous studies. Moreover, in contrast to common understanding, we show that the adsorption enthalpy of MOFs can also be optimized to further improve the peak energy efficiency by 40%. This work bridges an important knowledge gap between adsorbent materials development and device design, providing insight toward high-performance adsorption-based AWH technologies.

Abstract:Thermal conductivity is one of key parameters of adsorbents, which will affect the overall system performance of adsorption chiller. To improve adsorbent's thermal conductivity is always one of research focuses in chemisorption field. A new chemical composite adsorbent is fabricated by adding carbon coated metal(Aluminum and Nickel) nanoparticles with three different addition amounts into the mixture of chloride salts and natural expanded graphite aiming to improve the thermal conductivity. The preparation processes and its thermal conductivity of this novel composite adsorbent are reported and summarized. Experimental results indicate that the nanoparticles are homogenously dispersed in the composite adsorbent by applying the reported preparation processes. The thermal conductivity of the composite adsorbent can averagely enlarge by 20% when the weight ratio of the added nanoparticles is 10 wt%. Moreover, carbon coated aluminum nanoparticles exhibit more effective enlargement in thermal conductivity than nickel nanoparticles. As for the composite adsorbent of CaCl2-NEG, there is a big reinforcement from 30% to 50% for Al@C nanoparticles, however only 10% in maximum caused by Ni@C nanoparticles. The proposed research provides a methodology to design and prepare thermal conductive chemical composite adsorbent.
Screening of Covalent-Organic Frameworks for Adsorption Heat Pumps.

Abstract:Exploring high-performing adsorption-driven heat pumps (AHPs) remains a challenging task owing to the low working capacity, high regeneration temperature, and low energy efficiency of conventional adsorbents. Quick discovery of the novel promising adsorbents could help to improve the coefficient of performance of AHPs for heating (COPH) and cooling (COPC). Herein, we reported an approach to identify the high-performing covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) for heating, cooling, and ice making by high-throughput computational screening based on grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations and, for the first time, machine learning. It was demonstrated that compared with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), COFs were more suitable adsorbents of AHPs for cooling because of their weak interaction toward ethanol that favors stepwise adsorption. Structure-property relationship analysis revealed that the average enthalpy of adsorption commensurate with the enthalpy of evaporation will benefit the performance of AHPs besides the high working capacity and low step positions of adsorption isotherms. In order to reduce the computational cost of screening, a random forest model was developed to successfully predict the COPC of both COFs and MOFs.
Direct Observation of Tunable Thermal Conductance at Solid/porous Crystalline Solid Interfaces Induced by Water Adsorbents

Abstract:Improving interfacial thermal transport is crucial for heat dissipation in systems. Here, we design a strategy by utilizing the water adsorption-desorption process in porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to tune the interfacial heat transfer. We observe a changeable thermal conductance across the solid/porous MOFs interfaces owing to the dense water channel formed by the adsorbed water molecules in MOFs. Our experimental results show that the interfacial thermal conductance of Au/Cu3(BTC)2 heterointerfaces is increased up to 7.1 folds by this strategy, where Cu3(BTC)2 is a typical porous MOF and usually referred to as HKUST-1. Our molecular dynamics simulations further show that the surface tension of Au layer will cause the adsorbed water molecules in HKUST-1 to gather at the interfacial region. The dense water channel formed at the interfacial region can activate the high-frequency lattice vibrations and act as an additional thermal pathway, and then enhance heat transfer across the interfaces significantly. Our findings provide a new concept for tailoring thermal transport at the solid/porous MOFs heterointerfaces which will largely benefit MOF-related applications.

Our experimental and/or modeling results show that the interfacial thermal conductance of Au/Cu 3 (BTC) 2 , Au/Zr 6 O 4 (OH) 4 (BDC) 6 and Au/MOF-505 heterointerfaces is increased up to 7.1, 1.7 and 3.1 folds by this strategy, respectively, where Cu 3 (BTC) 2 is referred to as HKUST-1 and Zr 6 O 4 (OH) 4 (BDC) 6 is referred to as UiO-66. Our molecular dynamics simulations further show that the surface tension of Au layer will cause the adsorbed water molecules in MOFs to gather at the interfacial region.
