Abstract:A fast thermoacoustic computed tomography system with a multielement linear transducer array was developed to image biological tissues with circular scanning. The spatial resolution of the imaging system and the spectra of the thermoacoustic signals were analyzed. A modified integration backprojection algorithm using velocity potential was employed to recover the direct energy deposition distribution, signal processing methods, and reconstruction algorithms were validated by imaging a phantom. The differences of the microwave-frequency dielectric properties between malignant and normal adipose-dominated tissues in the breast are considerable, and the absorption contrast can reach as large as 6:1 at 1.2 GHz. An experiment of human breast tissue with a tumor was performed with this system; the thermoacoustic images reconstructed by a limited-field-filtered backprojection algorithm and a modified integration backprojection algorithm were also compared with a mammogram. Our results show that the system can provide a rapid and noninvasive approach for high-contrast breast cancer imaging.

Abstract:PurposeTo develop a free‐breathing, non‐electrocardiogram technique for simultaneous myocardial T1, T2, T2*, and fat‐fraction (FF) mapping in a single scan.MethodsThe MR Multitasking framework is adapted to quantify T1, T2, T2*, and FF simultaneously. A variable TR scheme is developed to preserve temporal resolution and imaging efficiency. The underlying high‐dimensional image is modeled as a low‐rank tensor, which allows accelerated acquisition and efficient reconstruction. The accuracy and/or repeatability of the technique were evaluated on static and motion phantoms, 12 healthy volunteers, and 3 patients by comparing to the reference techniques.ResultsIn static and motion phantoms, T1/T2/T2*/FF measurements showed substantial consistency (R > 0.98) and excellent agreement (intraclass correlation coefficient > 0.93) with reference measurements. In human subjects, the proposed technique yielded repeatable T1, T2, T2*, and FF measurements that agreed with those from references.ConclusionsThe proposed free‐breathing, non‐electrocardiogram, motion‐resolved Multitasking technique allows simultaneous quantification of myocardial T1, T2, T2*, and FF in a single 2.5‐min scan.

Abstract:Low-frequency ultrasound can permeate human thorax and can be applied in functional imaging of the respiratory system. In this study, we investigated the transmission of low-frequency ultrasound through the human thorax and propose a waveform matching method to track the changes in the transmission signal during subject's respiration. The method's effectiveness is validated through experiments involving ten human subjects. Furthermore, the experimental findings indicate that the traveltime of the first-arrival signal remains consistent throughout the respiratory cycle. Leveraging this observation, we introduce an algorithm for ultrasound thorax attenuation factor differential imaging. By computing the paths and energy variation of the first-arrival signal from the received waveform, the algorithm reconstructs the distribution of attenuation factor differences between two different thorax states, providing insights into the functional status of the respiratory system. Numerical experiments, using both normal thorax and defective thorax models, confirm the algorithm's feasibility and its robustness against noise, variations in transducer position and orientation. These results highlight the potential of low-frequency ultrasound for bedside, continuous monitoring of human respiratory system through functional imaging.

Abstract:Current imaging modalities face challenges in clinical applications due to limitations in resolution or contrast. Microwave-induced thermoacoustic imaging may provide a complementary modality for medical imaging, particularly for detecting foreign objects due to their different absorption of electromagnetic radiation at specific frequencies. A thermoacoustic tomography system with a multielement linear transducer array was developed and used to detect foreign objects in tissue. Radiography and thermoacoustic images of objects with different electromagnetic properties, including glass, sand, and iron, were compared. The authors' results demonstrate that thermoacoustic imaging has the potential to become a fast method for surgical localization of occult foreign objects. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Purpose To develop an MR multitasking-based multidimensional assessment of cardiovascular system (MT-MACS) with electrocardiography-free and navigator-free data acquisition for a comprehensive evaluation of thoracic aortic diseases. Methods The MT-MACS technique adopts a low-rank tensor image model with a cardiac time dimension for phase-resolved cine imaging and a T-2-prepared inversion-recovery dimension for multicontrast assessment. Twelve healthy subjects and 2 patients with thoracic aortic diseases were recruited for the study at 3 T, and both qualitative (image quality score) and quantitative (contrast-to-noise ratio between lumen and wall, lumen and wall area, and aortic strain index) analyses were performed in all healthy subjects. The overall image quality was scored based on a 4-point scale: 3, excellent; 2, good; 1, fair; and 0, poor. Statistical analysis was used to test the measurement agreement between MT-MACS and its corresponding 2D references. Results The MT-MACS images reconstructed from acquisitions as short as 6 minutes demonstrated good or excellent image quality for bright-blood (2.58 +/- 0.46), dark-blood (2.58 +/- 0.50), and gray-blood (2.17 +/- 0.53) contrast weightings, respectively. The contrast-to-noise ratios for the three weightings were 49.2 +/- 12.8, 20.0 +/- 5.8 and 2.8 +/- 1.8, respectively. There were good agreements in the lumen and wall area (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.993, P < .001 for lumen; intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.969, P < .001 for wall area) and strain (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.947, P < .001) between MT-MACS and conventional 2D sequences. Conclusion The MT-MACS technique provides high-quality, multidimensional images for a comprehensive assessment of the thoracic aorta. Technical feasibility was demonstrated in healthy subjects and patients with thoracic aortic diseases. Further clinical validation is warranted.

Abstract:Monitoring respiratory movements is an effective way to improve radiotherapy treatments of thoracic and abdominal tumors, but the current approach is limited to measuring specific points in the chest and abdomen. In this paper, a dynamic three-dimensional (3D) measurement approach of the human chest and abdomen surface is proposed, which can infer tumor movement more accurately, so the radiotherapy damage to the human body can be reduced. Firstly, color stripe patterns in the RGB color model are projected, then after color correction, the collected stripe image sequences are separated into the three RGB primary color stripe image sequences. Secondly, a fringe projection approach is used to extract the folded phase combined 3D Fourier transform with 3D Gaussian filtering. By the relationship between adjacent fringe images in the time sequence, Gaussian filter parameters with individual characteristics are designed and optimized to improve the accuracy of wrapped phase extraction. In addition, based on the difference between the fractional parts of the folded phase error, one remainder equation can be determined, which is used for time-phase unwrapping. The simulation model and human experiments show that the proposed approach can obtain the 3D image sequences of the chest and abdomen surface in respiratory motion effectively and accurately with strong anti-interference ability.

Abstract:Noninvasive diagnosis of bone density and mechanical properties using non-radiation imaging modality is an emerging area with promising in early prediction of osteopenia and treatment effectiveness in the clinic and functional disuse, i.e., long-term bedrest and space mission. Advances in quantitative ultrasound have shown advantages in measuring both bone density and mechanical strength, non-radiation, imaging capability, and easy to use. The challenge that remained is the poor penetration of ultrasound signals passing through trabecular and cortical bones and acoustic energy scattering. A new scanning confocal ultrasound technology is developed in this lab to detect the alteration of bone to provide diagnostic results in bone density and structure properties. A software-controlled flexible ultrasound system with 2-D dual array transducer is developed and proposed for the purpose of noninvasive bone density diagnosis and assessment of bone loss. Transmitting (Tx) transducer elements are divided into sub-blocks to excite the ultrasound signals in sequence to decrease the system complexity while maintaining beam pattern properties by the signal processing procedure at receiving (Rx) side. Apodization is also applied to reduce acoustic side lobes and to make the resolution in the ultrasound field of view (FOV) more uniform. This study may provide basic understanding of modulated confocal ultrasound beam forming for tissue characterization, such as trabecular bone structual and strength properties.

Abstract:Two innovative methodologies for human chest medical imaging are presented. The former technique allows to predict the air/liquid content of human lungs with real-time performance starting from data acquired in a 3D electrical impedance tomography (EIT) probing scenario. On the other hand, the second approach is aimed at solving the microwave inverse scattering (IS) problem through an innovative double-differential imaging method allowing to jointly exploit spatial and temporal a-priori information on the diagnosed patient. Illustrative numerical examples are shown to assess the effectiveness of both approaches.

Abstract:Microwave tomographic imaging techniques have mainly been studied for medical applications in the past two decades. In recent years, however, there has been increased interest in the application of microwave imaging techniques for industrial processes or multiphase flows. In the medical case, water has been used as the background material, with microwave antennas and the object immersed in water, and the contrast of the object is measured against the dielectric properties of water. For industrial application, it is more convenient to use air as the background medium. However, this leads to a large contrast problem if the material being imaged contains a large amount of water. Consequently, the image reconstruction algorithms need to be more adaptive to the level of contrast and uncertainty in the initial guessed values in the iterative reconstruction process. The electromagnetic noise in the open air environment would usually be higher than that in water as a result of the surrounding industrial noise, and the near field region is much larger in air than that in water at the same operating frequency. Therefore, the algorithms need to be less sensitive to the effect of noise. In this paper, two algorithms based on the Newton-Kantorovich and Conjugate Gradient error minimisation methods are investigated with a view to their applications in the imaging of industrial processes using air as the background medium. The results on the effect of noise and the images reconstructed using the algorithms are presented.

Abstract:A study on the effect of human thorax dilation in microwave thorax imaging is made based on a human thorax model generated by a scanner. The dilation of thorax is modeled linearly. The propagation of microwave in thorax is solved with 2-D Finite Element-Boundary Integral Method (FE-BI). The change of transmission coefficients reveals the influence of thorax dilation.

Abstract:A three-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic torso scanner system is presented. This system aims at providing a complimentary/auxiliary imaging modality to supplement conventional imaging devices, e.g., ultrasound, computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), for pathologies in the chest and upper abdomen such as pulmonary abscess, fatty liver disease and renal cancer. The system is comprised of an array of 14 resonance-based reflector (RBR) antennas that operate from 0.83 to 1.9 GHz and are located on a movable flange. The system is able to scan different regions of the chest and upper abdomen by mechanically moving the antenna array to different positions along the long axis of the thorax with an accuracy of about 1 mm at each step. To verify the capability of the system, a three-dimensional imaging algorithm is proposed. This algorithm utilizes a fast frequency-based microwave imaging method in conjunction with a slice interpolation technique to generate three-dimensional images. To validate the system, pulmonary abscess was simulated within an artificial torso phantom. This was achieved by injecting an arbitrary amount of fluid (e.g., 30 mL of water), into the lungs regions of the torso phantom. The system could reliably and reproducibly determine the location and volume of the embedded target.

Abstract:Microwave induced thermo-acoustic tomography (MITAT) has great potential in early breast cancer detection because it utilizes the advantages of both microwave imaging and ultrasound imaging. In this paper, a fast and efficient simulation approach based on a hybrid method which combines finite integration time domain (FITD) method and pseudo-spectral time domain (PSTD) method is developed. By using this approach, energy deposition of biology tissue illuminated by electromagnetic fields can be accurately simulated. Meanwhile, acoustic properties of the tissue can be efficiently simulated as well. Based on this approach, a MITAT model is created and some simulated results are analyzed. Furthermore, some real breast tissues are adopted to perform the thermo-acoustic imaging experiment. Comparisons between experimental and simulated results are made. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach are demonstrated by both numerical simulations and experimental results.

Abstract:A microwave thorax imaging system is designed for human respiration monitoring. A compact low-profile symmetrical dipole antenna is designed as sensing antenna. A 16-antenna array is fabricated and mounted on a wearable belt. The antenna array is controlled by a switch matrix and the data acquisition is completed with a vector network analyzer. During the measurement, each antenna acts as a transmitter alternately and the other antennas act as the receivers. Human respiration experiments are conducted and S-parameters are measured continuously during respiration. The Jacobian Weighted One-step Supervised Descent Method (SDM) is applied to the reconstruction of both synthetic and measured data. The distribution of dielectric properties in human thorax is reconstructed and the results verify the feasibility of monitoring human respiration with microwave.

Abstract:The change of acoustic velocity in the human thorax reflects the functional status of the respiratory system. Imaging the thorax’s acoustic velocity distribution can be used to monitor the respiratory system. In this paper, the feasibility of imaging the human thorax using ultrasound traveltime tomography with a supervised descent method (SDM) is studied. The forward modeling is computed using the shortest path ray tracing (SPR) method. The training model is composed of homogeneous acoustic velocity background and a high-velocity rectangular block moving in the domain of interest (DoI). The average descent direction is learned from the training set. Numerical experiments are conducted to verify the method’s feasibility. Normal thorax model experiment proves that SDM traveltime tomography can efficiently reconstruct thorax acoustic velocity distribution. Numerical experiments based on synthetic thorax model of pleural effusion and pneumothorax show that SDM traveltime tomography has good generalization ability and can detect the change of acoustic velocity in human thorax. This method might be helpful for the diagnosis and evaluation of respiratory diseases.

Abstract:A preliminary system for microwave thorax imaging is designed and experiments are conducted. A compact low-profile symmetrical dipole antenna operating at 915 MHz is designed for the system. An acrylic rectangular box is fabricated as the experiment phantom to mimic an ordinary human thorax. Graduated cylinders with different diameters are used as imaging targets. During measurement, each antenna acts in turn as a transmitter and other antennas act as the receivers. One-step supervised descent method (SDM) is adopted as the imaging algorithm. Results under different scenarios indicate that structural information can be reconstructed with the one-step SDM. This study verifies the feasibility of microwave thorax imaging.

Abstract:In this paper, the application of the supervised descent method (SDM) for 2-D microwave thorax imaging is studied. The forward modeling problem is solved by the finite element-boundary integral (FE-BI) method. According to the prior information of human thorax, a 3-ellipse training set is generated offline. Then, the average descent direction between an initial background model and the training models is calculated. Finally, the reconstruction of the testing thorax model is achieved based on the average descent directions online. The feasibility using One-Step SDM for thorax imaging is studied. Numerical results indicate that the structural information of thorax can be reconstructed. It has potential for real-time imaging in future clinical diagnosis.
Heating Simulations of Pulsed High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound in the Presence of Heterogeneous Tissue

Abstract:A numerical model for evaluating the distribution of the acoustic pressure and temperature beneath the abdominal wall or the chest wall under nonablative high-intensity ultrasound treatments is proposed. The nonlinear propagation of the ultrasound wave was simulated using a k-space pseudo-spectral method. The abdominal wall (heterogeneous medium) was presented by the digital tissue cross sections. The heating process was modeled by solving the bioheat equation using a finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. As indicated in the simulation, the presents of the heterogeneous tissue can influence the distribution of the acoustic intensity. The intensity beneath the abdominal wall was decreased by 2.2 dB on the focal point compared with homogeneous tissue and the temperature of the focused region in the tissue is reduced as a result. Furthermore, compared with conventional 2-order FDTD methods, the proposed model is still stable when the high dissipative tissue (e.g., bone) presents.

Abstract:Microwave induced thermoacoustic tomography is a newly developing non-invasive and non-ionizing modality. In practical applications, such as breast tumor detection and brain imaging, the acoustic properties in the tissue to be detected are usually unknown and spatially non-uniform, which results in distortion and blurring of the buried targets. In this paper, a reconstruction method based on speed of sound (SoS) autofocus is proposed to reduce the effect of acoustic inhomogeneity in different soft tissues. According to this method, the number of tissue types, which are referred to as clusters in this work, can be automatically determined by a decision graph. To distinguish the boundaries of different tissues, a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) is fitted to the obtained image data for soft clustering instead of traditional hard clustering. Through fixing the tissue centers which are characterized by corresponding data density peaks as the means of Gaussian parameters rather than choosing them randomly, adaptive and robust reconstruction performance can be guaranteed. After performing an iterative GMM optimization, the SoS autofocus is achieved. Image reconstructed by using the updated SoS distribution is with higher accuracy than that with homogeneous assumption. Compared with the existing similar methods, the proposed method strategy obviates the need of extra experiment costs, and possesses good robustness with respect to hard assignment model errors when the medium is relatively complex. Realistic breast model and brain model simulations combined with experiments of agar phantom and pig's brain are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Fast Temperature Estimation from Undersampled K-Space with Fully-Sampled Center for MR Guided Microwave Ablation

Abstract:PurposeThis study aims to accelerate MR temperature imaging using the proton resonance frequency (PRF) shift method for real time temperature monitoring during thermal ablation.Materials and methodsThe proposed method estimates temperature changes from undersampled k-space with a fully sampled center. This proposed algorithm is based on the hybrid multi-baseline and referenceless treatment image model and can be seen as an extension of the conventional k-space-based hybrid thermometry. The parameters of hybrid model are acquired by utilizing information from low resolution images which are obtained from fully-sampled centers of k-space. Registration is used to correct temperature errors due to the displacement of the subject. Phantom heating simulations, motion simulations, phantom heating and in-vivo experiments were performed to investigate the efficiency of the proposed method. SPIRiT and the conventional k-space estimation reconstruction thermometry were implemented for comparison using the same sampling pattern.ResultsThe phantom heating simulations showed that the proposed method results in lower RMSEs than the conventional k-space hybrid thermometry and SPIRiT at various reduction factors tested. The motion simulations indicated the robustness of the proposed method to displacement of the subject. Phantom heating experiment further demonstrated the ability of the method to reconstruct temperature maps with less computation time and higher accuracy (RMSEs lower than 0.4°C) at a net reduction factor of 3.5 in the presence of large noise caused by a microwave needle. In-vivo experiments validated the feasibility of the proposed method to estimate temperature changes from undersampled k-space (net reduction factor 4.3) in presence of respiratory motion and complicated anatomical structure, while reducing computation time as much as 10-fold compared with the conventional k-space method.ConclusionThe proposed method accelerates the PRF-shift MR thermometry and provides more accurate temperature maps in presence of motion with relatively short computation time, which may make real time imaging for MR-guided microwave ablation possible.

Abstract:In this article, we study a 3-D acoustic imaging algorithm that can reconstruct compressibility, attenuation, and density simultaneously based on the contrast source inversion (CSI) method. This is a nonlinear and ill-posed inverse problem. To deal with the nonlinearity, we introduce two asymmetrical contrast sources that are functions of the contrasts and the total field. In this case, the scattered field and the total field are linear with the two contrast sources, and the two contrast sources are also linear with the two contrasts; thus, the nonlinearity is partially alleviated. To mitigate the ill-posedness of this inverse problem, we apply a multifrequency, multitransmitter, and multireceiver setting. Besides, to ensure the robustness of the algorithm, two multiplicative regularization terms are introduced as additional constraints. The reconstruction of those acoustic parameters can be achieved by alternately updating the contrast sources and the contrasts from the knowledge of the pressure field. Numerical studies show good reconstruction of compressibility, attenuation, and density of the synthetic thorax model, which validates the feasibility of imaging human thorax using low-frequency ultrasound.
