Abstract:As one of the common geological disasters on the seafloor, the occurrence of pockmarks often indicates the existence of submarine fluid. And the formation of the pockmarks is generally attributed to the soil carried away by the fluid. The research established physical model test and found: (1) The pockmark formed after aeration, and particle gradation changed in the center area of the pockmark where coarse particle (particle size/0.25 mm) increased obviously and fine particle (particle size <= 0.075 mm) decreased significantly; (2) Comparing the volume of the pockmark with the volume of the soil extracted by siphon, it can be found that the volume of the pockmark was much larger than the loss of soil, and the difference reached its peak when the inflation pressure was 20 kPa; (3) Comparing the cone resistance of the soil in the surface and boundary, it can be found that the resistance of the center and marginal soil was much bigger than the outside, and the cone resistance of the boundary was also improved greatly. The research considered that the formation of pockmark was not only related to the soil being carried away by the bottom current, but also the consolidation by vibration existed.

Abstract:Investigation of gas migration in saturated soil is of great theoretical and practical significance in marine science and engineering. The transport of gas bubbles in soil and its effects on soil physical and mechanical properties can be further studied. Gas injection and permeability tests were conducted using a self-developed oedometer with gas injection and water infiltration. Before the gas injection test, the remolded saturated soil was consolidated in an oedometer device to an effective vertical stress of 100 kPa. Gas injection tests were then performed to investigate the transport mechanism of bubbles in saturated soil and the changes in water permeability after gas injection. The results show that it is difficult for gas to migrate through capillary invasion and fracturing from the pore scale owing to the high gas entry pressure in fine-grained sediments. Hence, initial gas migration mechanism in pore scale is elastic-plastic expansion. The scale of cavities expands from micron to millimeter during gas injection, and gas pressure for fracturing reduces with the expansion of cavities. The fracturing initiated in millimeter scale and gas invades further into the soil. Interconnections of cavities and cracks resulting in an increasing of drainage rate and coefficient of permeability.

Abstract:Gas permeability (ka) and gas diffusion coefficient (Dp) are vital for controlling gas transport through earthen landfill cover overlying municipal solid wastes or acid mine tailings. Soil clods generated during the construction of landfill cover can result in various soil microstructures. However, the effects of soil microstructure on Dp and ka are unclear. This study aimed to investigate and compare effects of soil microstructure on measured ka and Dp of compacted manufactured sand tailings (MST)-bentonite mixtures, considering the effects of specimen preparation method, compaction water content (wcomp), and wetting path. The related pore size distributions (PSDs) were measured by mercury intrusion porosimetry. The measurements show that the average ka of as-compacted specimens increased and then decreased as wcomp increased (i.e., a lower soil air content & epsilon;-gas-filled volume per unit soil volume), while Dp reduced monotonically. It was because the compacted MST-bentonite mixtures exhibited a multimodal PSD, in which macropores significantly increased the average advective flow velocity of gas. However, the average diffusive flow velocity of gas was independent of pore size, according to the kinetic theory of gas molecules. Conversely, ka and Dp both decreased as & epsilon; decreased when the water content of the as-compacted specimen was increased along the wetting path by spraying water, due to the wetting-induced collapse of macropores. These illustrated that Dp was mainly controlled by the & epsilon; and tortuosity of gas-filled pores, while ka was dominated by well-connected gas-filled macropores. Moreover, the PSD of specimens was affected by the specimen preparation method, bentonite content, and sieving treatment, thus affecting ka and Dp.

Abstract:The Zengmu Basin located in the shallow water area of the southern South China Sea, is rich in oil and gas resources, within which faults and mud-diapir are developed, but it is unknown whether oil and gas migrate to the seafloor surface. The newly collected multibeam data across the Zengmu Basin reveal a large number of depressions, with depths of 2–4 m, widths of several tens of meters, large distribution range of 1.8–8 km along survey line, up to ∼50 km, and their backscatter intensity (-26 dB) is much greater than that of the surrounding area (-38 dB). Combined with the developed mud-diapir and fracture structures, and abundant oil and gas resources within this basin, these depressions are presumed to be pockmarks. Furthermore, more than 110 mono-sized small circular pockmarks, with a depth of less than 1 m and a width of 5 m, are observed in an area of less than 0.03 km 2 , which are not obliterated by sediment infilling with high sedimentation rate, implying an existence of unit-pockmarks that are or recently were active. In addition, seismic profiles across the Zengmu Basin show characterization of upward migration of hydrocarbons, expressed as mud-diapir structures, bright spots in the shallow formation with characteristics of "low frequency increase and high frequency attenuation". The sub-bottom profiles show the mud-diapir structures, as well as the gas-bearing blank zones beneath the seafloor. These features suggest large gas leaking and occurrence of large amounts of carbonate nodules on the seafloor. This indicates the complex and variable substrate type in the Zengmu Basin, while the area was once thought to be mainly silty sand and find sand. This is the first report on the discovery of pockmarks in the Zengmu Basin; it will provide basic information for submarine stability and marine engineering in China's maritime boundaries.

Abstract:Shallow gas is a kind of natural gas buried in shallow strata, generally, with methane as the main component, endowing it a potential energy resource while also a potential risk to the safety of ground engineering and environment. Microbial activity is usually regarded as an important driving force to generate shallow gas via metabolizing the environmental substrates. Therefore, the research on the microbial communities will be helpful to reveal the distribution of shallow gas in the gas-bearing formation. In this study, 30 sediment samples below the seabed in Hangzhou Bay (China) from depths of 1.5 m to 55 m were collected to investigate their microbial community, environmental characteristics and sediment type (clay or sand). It turned out that the presence of shallow gas had a good correlation with the distribution of archaea rather than bacteria, with the dominant microbe of Bathyarchaeota, Thaumarchaeota, and Euryarchaeota in the formation. Methanosarcinaceae and ANME-1a with the capacity of methane metabolism occupied high proportions. The correlation analysis and redundancy analysis (RDA) suggested that ammonium was a key environmental substrate to indicate the microbial community in the formation. The sediment type was proposed to shape environmental substrates in the formation, thus further affecting the microbial communities. The clay strata were demonstrated to have an important role in the generation and distribution of shallow gas, and more attention should be paid in terms of its resource discovery and engineering safety assessment.
The relationships between vertical variations of shallow gas and pore water geochemical characteristics in boreholes from the inner shelf of the East China Sea

Abstract:Shallow gas was widely recognized in the coastal region, especially in the estuarine delta areas with high organic matter (OM) burial flux. In this study, the vertical variations of shallow gas and the related geochemical indicators from two boreholes in the coastal region of the East China Sea (ECS) were investigated. Two gas-bearing layers were identified in the sediments from the Holocene and late Pleistocene series. Both boreholes exhibit a "typical" and an "inverse" Sulfate Methane Transition Zone (SMTZ). The "typical" SMTZs (SMTZ1 and SMTZ3) were in the upper part of the gas-bearing layers, where sulfate levels decrease and methane levels increase with depth. Conversely, the "inverse" SMTZs (SMTZ2 and SMTZ4) were in the lower part of the gas-bearing layers, exhibiting an increase in sulfate levels and a decrease in methane levels with depth, a phenomenon rarely documented in previous research. The downward variations of pore water geochemical characteristics indicates that these ions were related to Anaerobic Oxidation of Methane (AOM) processes. The increase in Ca 2+ and Ba 2+ concentrations and the gradual decrease in sulfate at the SMTZ reflect a series of biogeochemical processes resulting from the dissolution of carbonate and other minerals by AOM. The research indicates that sulfate in AOM may originate from multiple sources. Through analyzing the vertical distribution of shallow gas and the geochemical properties of pore water, this study elucidates the shallow gas formation mechanism and the features of the SMTZ, laying the groundwork for further investigations.

Abstract:The soft clay with low strength is widely distributed in the offshore area of China, the evaluation of its engineering properties will directly affect the design and safe operation of wind turbine foundation. Piezocone penetration test is the most widely used in-situ test method in offshore geotechnical investigation, which has less disturbance on soil. The disadvantage is that soil parameters can only be obtained through interpretation, which are site specific. Based on an offshore wind power project in Jiaxing offshore area of Hangzhou Bay, Zhejiang province, this paper carried out laboratory tests, in-situ piezocone penetration test. The range of calibrated CPTU cone factor N-kt for muddy silty clay in Hangzhou Bay offshore area is from 14.15 to 30.18, with a total average value of 20.25. The calibration results show that the cone factor N-kt is negatively correlated with pore pressure ratio B-q, but positively correlated with water content w, void ratioe, liquid limit w(L), plastic limit w(p) and plasticity indexI(p). And a multiple regression formula between N-kt and pore pressure ratio B-q, plasticity index I-p are obtained. By applying the N-kt correlations into the wind farm at Pinghu offshore area near this project, the results show that the correlations between water content w, void ratio e and cone factor N-kt and multiple regression formula between N-kt and pore pressure ratio B-q, plasticity index Ip have better interpretion quality on the strength of soft clay in Hangzhou Bay offshore area. The established correlations are not only suitable for the muddy silty clay, but also for the muddy clay and silty clay, which have good site applicability.

Abstract:The decomposition of gas hydrates releases gas and water at volumes much larger than the original volume. The gas escapes violently, which destroys seabed sediments and can even cause geological disasters. To explore the effect of natural gas hydrate decomposition on underwater slopes, laboratory experiments were conducted to observe the features of slope failure. Aeration was used to model the gas that was produced by hydrate decomposition, and the results were as follows. (a) Once air filled into the bottom of the underwater slope, the pore pressure at the slope was altered, which eventually caused the slope to fail. (b) The formation of pockmarks corresponded to the variations in the pore-water pressure. (c) The theoretical analysis results showed that the sedimentation rate of fine particles (d < 0.4 mm) was lower than the water flow velocity, indicating that these particles were carried away with the air–liquid two-phase flow, which eventually caused the pockmarks to develop into craters.
Diagenesis and Restructuring Mechanism of Oil and Gas Reservoir in the Marine Carbonate Formation, Northeastern Sichuan: A Case Study of the Puguang Gas Reservoir

Abstract:Based on the technology of balanced cross-section and physical simulation experiments associated with natural gas geochemical characteristic analyses, core and thin section observations, it has been proven that the Puguang gas reservoir has experienced two periods of diagenesis and restructuring since the Late Indo-Chinese epoch. One is the fluid transfer controlled by the tectonic movement and the other is geochemical reconstruction controlled by thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR). The middle Yanshan epoch was the main period that the Puguang gas reservoir experienced the geochemical reaction of TSR. TSR can recreate the fluid in the gas reservoir, which makes the gas drying index higher and carbon isotope heavier because C2+ (ethane and heavy hydrocarbon) and 12C (carbon 12 isotope) is first consumed relative to CH4 and 13C (carbon 13 isotope). However, the reciprocity between fluid regarding TSR (hydrocarbon, sulfureted hydrogen (H2S), and water) and reservoir rock results in reservoir rock erosion and anhydrite alteration, which increases porosity in reservoir, thereby improving the petrophysical properties. Superimposed by later tectonic movement, the fluid in Puguang reservoir has twice experienced adjustment, one in the late Yanshan epoch to the early Himalayan epoch and the other time in late Himalayan epoch, after which Puguang gas reservoir is finally developed.
Effect of Initial Pore Pressure on Undrained Shear Behaviour of Fine-Grained Gassy Soil

Abstract:Many of the world reserves of fossil fuels are located at various water depths in fine-grained sediment under the seabed. The fine-grained sediment contains relatively large biogas bubbles, which has been posing challenges to the stability of offshore foundations supporting oil and gas platforms. Although fine-grained gassy soil was found to exhibit different undrained shear strengths (cu) by altering the initial pore pressure, ui (relevant to water depth), systematic studies concerning the effect of ui on undrained shear behaviours of the soil are still lacking. This study reports a series of undrained triaxial tests aiming to compare and investigate the responses of reconstituted fine-grained gassy soil with the same consolidation pressure ([Formula: see text]), but at a wide range of varying ui (0–1000 kPa). The shearing-induced excess pore pressure (Δu) in the gassy specimens highly depends on ui. It can be either smaller than that of the saturated specimen with the same [Formula: see text] (due to partial dissipation of Δu into relatively large bubbles at low ui) or larger than that of the saturated specimen (related to collapse of relatively small bubbles at high ui). Consequently, the presence of bubbles had beneficially increased cu at relatively low ui (ui/[Formula: see text] < 0.6), and vice versa. The critical stress ratio of the reconstituted fine-grained gassy soil, however, did not appear to be altered by ui.
Correlations among Seabed Mega Pockmark Size, Water Depth, and Gas Volumes Suggest Formation by Depressurization: A Case Study of the Reed Basin in the South China Sea

Abstract:Pockmarks are relict seafloor geomorphological features formed by seepage of gas or fluid from the seabed. While seafloor pockmarks are widely distributed around the world, mega pockmarks with diameters > 1 km are rare, and their formation and maintenance mechanisms remain enigmatic. Using high-resolution multi-beam bathymetric data, this paper systematically identified mega pockmark groups in the southern depression of the Reed Basin in the South China Sea. Mega pockmarks of various shapes occur in groups in the Reed Basin, primarily along the sides of submarine canyons. Observed geomorphologic characteristics differ significantly from features reported in the published literature. Based on the collected data, the average ratio of pockmark depth to pockmark radius (d/r) is evaluated as ~0.3, which is consistent with analyses of additional pockmarks in 21 regions around the world. Our observations also agree with the previously reported generalization that small pockmarks are developed in shallow water and large pockmarks in deep water. We propose that pockmarks in the Reed Basin are formed by seafloor gas explosions. Widely developed carbonates store buried gas that continuously seeps along NE-SW trending faults. Cap layers are undercut by submarine canyons forming lines of mechanical weakness. During periods of rapid sea level fall, depressurization causes buried gas to be rapidly ejected along these lines, forming large pockmark groups. Because these results correlate easily observed bathymetric features to the presence of buried gas deposits, they have important implications for the exploration and research of deep-sea gas resources.
The Morphologies and Genesis of Mega-Pockmarks Near the Xisha Uplift, South China Sea

Abstract:Pockmarks are normally regarded to be manifestations of fluids escape through the seabed. Kilometer-wide depressions, here called mega-pockmarks occur as widespread features near the Xisha Uplift, northern South China Sea. Most of the pockmarks observed in this area are multi-kilometers and much larger than normal-pockmarks reported worldwide. The maximum diameter observed is 3210 m and the maximum depth observed is 165.2 m based on multibeam data and 2D seismic data. The pockmarks are circular, elliptical and crescentic in plan view. Seismic profiles show that the genesis of pockmarks is related to fluid (gas and/or pore water) escape. According to the fluids pathways, the pockmarks fall into four types: (1) gas chimney-related; (2) depositional boundary-related; (3) gas chimney and inclined structure (fault)-related; (4) inclined structure-related. Bottom currents are strong and complex in the study area. The multibeam data and seismic profiles indicate that they may play an important role on extension, maintenance and shaping of pockmarks. The research of the study area is in its initial stage, and the identification of these features as indicators of fluid flow is probably useful for hydrocarbon exploration. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Formation Mechanism of Deep-Sea Giant Pockmarks: A Case Study of the Reed Basin in the South China Sea

Abstract:Pockmarks are widely distributed in the seabed around the world, however, mega pockmarks with diameters >1 km are rare, and their formation mechanisms remain enigmatic. Using high-resolution multi-beam bathymetric data, we firstly identified mega pockmarks in the Reed Basin in the South China Sea (SCS). These mega pockmarks of various shapes occur in groups, primarily along the sides of submarine canyons. We propose a new hypothesis about the formation mechanism of the deep-sea pockmarks that pockmarks in the Reed Basin are formed by seafloor gas explosions, widely developed carbonates store buried gas that continuously seeps along NE-SW trending faults, cap layers are undercut by submarine canyons forming lines of mechanical weakness, during periods of rapid sea level fall, depressurization causes buried gas to be rapidly ejected along these lines, forming mega pockmark groups. Submarine pockmarks reported in 21 regions globally have been analyzed, and it is found that the average median of the ratio of depth to radius (d/r) of the pockmarks is close to 0.3. Based on the theory of crater formation, it is found that the d/r ratio of the crater is also close to 0.3, which provides a new idea for the formation mechanism of deep-sea pockmarks. It is also found that the average size of the pockmarks is controlled by the water depth, and giant pockmarks are more likely to form in the deep sea. Because these results correlate easily observed bathymetric features to the presence of buried gas deposits, they have important implications for the exploration and research of deep-sea gas resources.

Abstract:With the advancement of mining and exploration technology, tight sandstone gas reservoirs in coal-bearing strata have greatly attracted people's attention. As a surface property of tight sandstone, wettability is critical in gas recovering process. The sedimentary microfacies indirectly affect the sandstone wettability by controlling its composition and structure. It was found that in general, the sandstone samples deposited in sedimentary microfacies with a strong hydrodynamic force, such as subaqueous distributary channel, the barrier bar and sand flat are strongly-moderately water wet with higher gas content and higher expected gas recovery, while the sandstone samples deposited in sedimentary microfacies with weak hydrodynamic force or high interstitial contents are usually weakly water wet with lower gas content and lower expected gas recovery.

Abstract:The northeastern continental slope of the South China Sea is one of the promising areas for gas hydrates, which is characterized by its variable topography and complex tectonics. In this paper, two gravity piston cores were sampled from the shallow sediments in the vicinity of the region where various morphologies of gas hydrate was recovered during the second gas hydrate expedition of Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey. Conventionally, the identification of gas hydrate was primarily dependent on the bottom simulating reflector (BSR). Apart from BSR, the anomalies in pore water geochemistry, which are highly related to various microbially-mediated processes and features of fluid from deep hydrocarbon reservoir, are also helpful for the gas hydrate exploration. In this study, upward methane flux may be responsible for distinct characteristics of pore waters observed at the two sample sites. A reactive transport model was accordingly established to compare contrastive fluid features and to estimate the upward methane flux. Since fluid migration is typically associated with complex tectonic settings of the study area, it is proposed that heterogeneous distribution of gas hydrates along the continental margin should be well considered.

Abstract:The Xihu Sag in the East China Sea Basin is located at the edge of the eastern Chinese continent and has great exploration potential. In recent years, the development of low-permeability and tight sandstone gas has become an important area of exploration and development in the Huagang Formation (E3h) of the Xihu Sag. The tight sandstone reservoir in the Xihu Sag is characterized by serious heterogeneity, high water saturation, low resistivity, and a complex gas–water relationship. Because of these characteristics of tight sandstone reservoirs, it is difficult to perform an evaluation of them. In this work, a bimodal Gaussian density function was constructed using the data of high-pressure mercury intrusion (HPMI) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR); this approach was used to analyze the pore structure parameters. The reservoirs were divided into four types using the fitting parameter η, and the rock electric parameters that correspond to different pore structures were quite different. When combined with the log response equation of η with acoustic interval transit time (AC), density (DEN), and natural gamma (GR) logging curves, an evaluation method of gas-bearing properties that was based on the characteristics of the pore structure was established. Compared with the water saturation test of the sealing core, it was found that the water saturation calculated by the classification of the pore structure was more accurate than that obtained by the conventional method, and the error was less than 8.35%, which proves that this method is feasible and effective. The findings of this study can help provide a better understanding of the distribution characteristics of gas and water in tight sandstone and provide help for tight gas exploration and development.

Abstract:In the late Miocene, giant ancient pockmarks, which are fairly rare globally, developed in the Qiongdongnan Basin. In this paper, to determine the sedimentary characteristics and genetic mechanism of these giant ancient pockmarks in the Yinggehai Formation of the Qiongdongnan Basin, based on high-resolution 3D seismic data and multiattribute fusion technologies, we analyzed the planar distribution and seismic facies of the ancient pockmarks and compared the characteristics of the ancient pockmarks with those of channels, craters, and hydrate pits. Moreover, we also discussed the implications of the fluid escape system and paleo-bottom current activity in the ancient pockmark development area and analyzed the influence of the ancient pockmarks on the paleoclimate in this region. Finally, an evolutionary model was proposed for the giant ancient pockmarks. This model shows that the giant ancient pockmarks in the southern Qiongdongnan Basin were affected by both deep fluid escape and lateral transformation of paleobottom currents. In addition, the giant ancient pockmarks contributed to the atmospheric CO2 concentration in the late Miocene and played a great role in the contem- porary evaluation of deepwater petroleum exploration.

Abstract:A mega-pockmark,1 500 m in diameter and 75 m in depth,is discovered on the east side of the Baiyun Sag,the South China Sea.Many irregular nodules are collected from the mega-pockmark and most of them characterized by fresh holes and seep passages.The mineral composition,microstructures,stable carbon and oxygen isotopes (δ13C and δ18 O) of the five authigenic carbonates are used to trace the fluid source and their forming environment.Mineralogical study suggests that the five carbonates are all dominated by ferrous dolomite,followed by a detrital fraction,mainly composed of quartz and feldspar.The δ13C of the five carbonates falls in the range of-24.7‰～-10.9‰,indicating a primary source of 13C-depleted thermogenic methane.The δ18O of five carbonates varies between 5.6‰～6.9‰ V-PDB,indicating that the 18 O-rich fluids are derived from the decomposition of gas hydrates and/or dehydration of clay minerals at depth.Gas hydrate may have existed in the sediment of the mega-pockmark.Ferrous dolomites in authigenic carbonates are formed in sediments and subsequently exposed to the seawater,indicating that the old methane seep was related to deep oil and gas seepage in the mega-pockmark.The live tubeworms and gas plumes in the pockmark suggest that methane seep is still active nowadays.
