Abstract:Lithium metal batteries have been considered as one of the most promising next‐generation power‐support devices due to their high specific energy and output voltage. However, the uncontrollable side‐reaction and lithium dendrite growth lead to the limited serving life and hinder the practical application of lithium metal batteries. Here, a tri‐monomer copolymerized gel polymer electrolyte (TGPE) with a cross‐linked reticulation structure was prepared by introducing a cross‐linker (polyurethane group) into the acrylate‐based in situ polymerization system. The soft segment of polyurethane in TGPE enables the far migration of lithium ions, and the ‐NH forms hydrogen bonds in the hard segment to build a stable cross‐linked framework. This system hinders anion migration and leads to a high Li+ migration number (tLi+=0.65), which achieves uniform lithium deposition and effectively inhibits lithium dendrite growth. As a result, the assembled symmetric cell shows robust reversibility over 5500 h at a current density of 1 mA cm‐2. The LFP||TGPE||Li cell has capacity retention of 89.8% after cycling 800 times at a rate of 1C. In summary, in situ polymerization of TGPE electrolytes is expected to be a candidate material for high energy density lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Lithium metal battery (LMB) possessing a high theoretical capacity is a promising candidate of advanced energy storage devices. However, its safety and stability are challenged by lithium dendrites and the leakage of liquid electrolyte. Here, a self-enhancing gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) is created by in situ polymerizing 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) in the nanofibrous skeleton for enabling safe LMB. The nanofiber membrane possesses a better affinity with poly-DOL (PDOL) than commercial separator for constructing homogeneous GPE with enhanced ion conductivity. Furthermore, polydopamine is introduced on nanofiber membrane to form hydrogen bonding with PDOL and bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)imide anion, dramatically improving the mechanical strength, ionic conductivity, and transference number of GPE. Besides, molecular dynamic simulation is used to reveal the intrinsic factors of high ionic conductivity and reinforcing effect in the meantime. Consequently, the LiFePO4 //Li batteries using self-enhancing GPE show extraordinary cyclic stability over 800 cycles under high current density of 2 C, with a capacity decay of 0.021% per cycle, effectively suppressing the growth of lithium dendrites. This ingenious strategy is expected to manufacture advanced performance and high safety LMBs and compatible with the current battery production.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have gained much attention recently. However, the short lifespan and safety issues restrict their commercial applications. Here we report a novel gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) based on lithiated poly(vinyl chloride-r-acrylic acid) (PVCAALi) to realize dendrite-suppressing and long-term stable lithium metal cycling. PVC chains ensure the quick gelation process and high electrolyte uptake, and lithiated PAA segments enable the increase of mechanical strength, acceleration of lithium-ion transmission and improvement of interfacial compatibility. PVCAALi GPE showed much higher mechanical strength compared with other free-standing GPEs in previous works. It displays a superior ionic conductivity of 1.50 mS cm−1 and a high lithium-ion transference number of 0.59 at room temperature. Besides, the lithiated GPE exhibits excellent interfacial compatibility with lithium metal anodes. Lithium symmetrical cells with PVCAALi GPE yield low hysteresis of 50 mV over 1000 h at 1.0 mA cm−2. And the possible mechanism of the lithiated GPE with improved lithium-ion transfer and interfacial property was discussed. Accordingly, both the Li4Ti5O12/Li and lithium-sulfur (Li-S) cells assembled with PVCAALi GPE show outstanding electrochemical performance, retaining high discharge capacities of 133.8 mAh g−1 and 603.8 mAh g−1 over 200 cycles, respectively. This work proves excellent application potential of the highly effective and low-cost PVCAALi GPE in safe and long-life LMBs.

Abstract:Multiscale Structural Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs), including micrometer‐scale poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) matrix, SiO2 nanoparticles, Zeolite Socony Mobil‐5 with a sub‐nanometer channel, Li salt, and carbonate ester, are fabricated for Li metal batteries. The multiscale structural GPEs can expedite Li+ ions transport and build stable interphase on Li metal anodes, thereby reducing Li dendrite growth and delivering outstanding electrochemical performance. Li metal batteries (LMBs) are considered as promising candidates for future rechargeable batteries with high energy density. However, Li metal anode (LMA) is extensively sensitive to general liquid electrolytes, leading to unstable interphase and dendrites growth. Herein, a novel gel polymer electrolyte consisting of a micro‐nanostructured poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) matrix and inorganic fillers of Zeolite Socony Mobil‐5 (ZSM‐5) and SiO2 nanoparticles, is fabricated to expedite Li+ ions transport and suppress Li dendrite growth. Due to the Lewis acid interaction, SiO2 can absorb amounts of PF6− and promote the dissociation of LiPF6. The specific sub‐nanometer pore structure of ZSM‐5 greatly enhances the Li+ ion transference number. These structures can restrain the decomposition of electrolytes and build stable interphase on LMA. Therefore, the Li||Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 full cell maintains 92% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 1 C (1 C ≈190 mAh g−1) in carbonate electrolyte. This multiscale design provides an effective strategy for electrolyte exploration in high‐performance LMBs.

Abstract:Safety issues resulting from flammable organic solvent and lithium (Li) dendrite formation have seriously impeded Li metal batteries development. Here, the H+ generated by acid-treated Al2O3 functions as an initiator, promotes the polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) in a commercial liquid electrolyte (LE) which contains 1 M lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) in a mixed organic solution of 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) and 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) (1:1, v/v) to form gel polymer electrolyte (GPE). Owing to the fire-retarding property of Al2O3, the oxygen index of as-prepared GPE can reach up to 22.2%. Furthermore, a high Li+ transference number of 0.74 has been achieved by acid-treated nano Al2O3. The –OH on the surface of acid-treated nano Al2O3 can attract TFSI‐ anions by Lewis acid-base interaction and promote the dissolution of LiTFSI and enhance the mobility of Li+. Sequentially, the Li-Li symmetric cells based on as-prepared GPE show no evident polarization enlargement after 1000 h cycling under the current density of 1 mA cm−2, which means as-prepared GPE can effectively suppress the Li dendrite formation during the Li plating/stripping process. The lithium metal batteries (LMBs) using LiFePO4 as a cathode deliver excellent rate performance with capacity retention up to 97% after a sequence of current density attributing to Li's good interfacial stability anodes.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are plagued with non-uniform and dendritic electrodeposition of Li when used with liquid electrolytes, resulting in poor cycle life and Coulombic efficiency, and safety hazards. Herein, we report a novel gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) for LMBs enabling uniform and nondendritic Li electrodeposition, long cycle life, and high Columbic efficiency. The GPE is made by immobilization of liquid electrolytes within a crosslinked polymer matrix. At ambient temperature, the GPE shows a Li ion conductivity of 1.5 mS cm−1. Topology and morphology of the electrochemically deposited Li in the GPE were studied by operando optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS) characterizations indicate that the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer at the Li/GPE interface is a thin and LiF-rich while the SEI layer is thick and LiF-poor at the Li/liquid electrolyte interface. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that LiF crystals facilitate and regulate Li ions transport. Lithium|lithium iron phosphate (Li|LFP) cells with our GPE deliver an initial specific capacity of ∼130 mAh g−1 and ∼70% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 2C charge/discharge rate. This study offers a promising approach for engineering a stable and conductive Li/polymer electrolyte interface for dendrite-free LMBs.

Abstract:Lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) are expected to serve as next-generation energy storage systems due to their high theoretical energy density. However, their practical application is largely impeded due to the safety risks that arise from the uncontrollable Li dendrite growth and the high reactivity between high flammability liquid organic electrolytes and metallic lithium. Here, we report a highly safe quasi-solid gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) to achieve stable cycling of lithium metal with high coulombic efficiency, and it is prepared by in situ polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) assisted by multi-functional H 3 Sb 3 P 2 O 14 sheets. H 3 Sb 3 P 2 O 14 acts as an initiator and a functional additive simultaneously that promotes the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer, thereby regulating the uniform deposition of Li and improving the Li plating/stripping efficiency. The obtained quasi-solid GPE exhibits high ionic conductivity and enhanced oxidative stability, favoring a stabilized electrode/electrolyte interface. Using the GPE, the electrochemical performance of the quasi-solid-state LMB with a LiFePO 4 cathode and a lithium metal anode is significantly improved, delivering a discharge capacity of 125.7 mA h g −1 even after 1000 cycles. Therefore, the high reversibility and remarkable battery cyclability suggest that such a GPE is a promising choice of electrolyte for LMBs, while its facile preparation makes its large-scale application possible in the future.

Abstract:Developing safe and high-energy-density lithium metal batteries (LMBs) is considered to be the focus of next-generation rechargeable batteries. However, the inevitable lithium reaction with the liquid electrolyte and the subsequent formation of Li dendrites must be overcome, and upgrading traditional liquid electrolytes is a key strategy for achieving this goal. Here, we report a nano-SiO2-supported gel polymer electrolyte (SiO2-GPE) with a hierarchical structure fabricated via in situ gelation of a traditional organic liquid electrolyte supported on a functionally modified SiO2 layer, which displayed high ionic conductivity (1.98 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) at 25 degrees C) and wide electrochemical window (>4.9 V vs Li/Li+). The LiFePO4/SiO2-GPE/Li cells exhibited a high capacity of 125.5 mAh g(-1) at 1 C with capacity retention of 88.42% after 700 cycles. The superior electrochemical performance is mainly due to the highly compatible electrode/electrolyte interface and the effective inhibition of Li dendrite growth provided by the synergistic effects of this SiO2-GPE membrane.

Abstract:An innovative ultrathin (1 μm) and robust gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) for lithium metal batteries is successfully prepared using an in situ curing technique. The ultrahigh robustness of the polyethylene separator and the optimized solvation structure within the GPE contribute to the construction of durable and stable interfacial layers, leading to extraordinary cycling stability in practical quasi‐solid‐state Li metal batteries. Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) hold great promise for lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs). Nevertheless, a critical challenge lies in reducing the thickness of GPEs while maintaining their mechanical integrity to achieve high‐energy‐density LMBs. Additionally, protecting the Li metal anode via electrolyte engineering in GPEs remains demanding. Herein, an innovative ultrathin (1 μm‐thick) yet robust GPE developed using an in situ curing technique, featuring a nanofibrous, exceptionally strong polyethylene separator is presented. The unique microstructure, interfacial conformability, and ultrahigh mechanical robustness of the ultrathin polyethylene separator are thoroughly verified. Enhanced ionic association within the GPE is achieved due to the strong affinity of electrolyte solvent with the fluorinated polymer network, as confirmed by large‐scale molecular dynamics simulations. The optimized solvation structure with high contact ion pairs and aggregate fractions contributes to forming an anion‐derived inorganic‐rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), thereby protecting the lithium anode. Benefiting from the ultrahigh robustness of GPE and the excellent interfacial stability, the Li metal full cell with a high mass loading LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode (≈17.3 mg cm−2) and thin Li foil anode (50 μm) demonstrates 91% capacity retention after 200 cycles. This design demonstrates a feasible approach toward the practical quasi‐solid‐state LMBs.

Abstract:The leakage of liquid electrolyte and the formation of lithium dendrites pose challenges to safety and stability of lithium metal batteries (LMBs). The appearance of gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) has obviously improved the safety of traditional LMBs. However, the limited inhibition of GPE on lithium dendrites is detrimental to the safety of LMBs. Herein, a kind of poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)/gelatin (GN) GPE with high ionic conductivity, high-temperature resistance, and flame-retardancy, was prepared by electrospinning and soaking method. Utilizing the electrospinning network of PVDF-HFP, its affinity to liquid electrolytes, makes this GPE more beneficial to ions transport and the formation of gel. And, the GN with sol-gel properties, enhances the mechanical property (13.5 MPa) of HFP-GN GPE. Meanwhile, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) suggest that the attraction of polar groups of GN to Li+ can regulate the distribution of Li+ and protect Li anodes. Consequently, the application of HFP-GN GPEs to LMBs with cathodes of LiFePO4 and LiCoO2 deliver excellent electrochemical performances: after 300 cycles, the LiFePO4/HFP-GN GPE/Li battery keeps a low capacity decay rate of 0.09% at 5 C; after 400 cycles at 2 C, the LiCoO2/HFP-GN GPE/Li cell retains a high capacity retention of 74%. This GPE is demonstrated for the application prospect of safe LMBs.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) are connected by chemical reactions to form a PEG–CD network, which is blended with polyvinylidene fluoride and a liquid electrolyte to prepare a novel composite gel electrolyte for lithium metal batteries. Such an electrolyte has good thermal stability, ionic conductivity, and ionic transport number at room temperature. Both LiFePO4/Li and LiCoO2/Li batteries with such an electrolyte show excellent cycle stability at room temperature. Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) with extremely high energy densities have several advantages among energy storage equipment. However, the uncontrolled growth of dendrites and the flammable liquid electrolytes (LEs) often cause safety accidents. All solid‐state batteries seem to be the ultimate choice, but solvent‐free electrolytes usually fail in terms of conductivity at room temperature. Therefore, gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) with a simple manufacturing process and high ionic conductivity are considered as the most competitive candidates to resolve the present difficulties. Herein, we design a polymeric network structure via esterification and amidation reactions between polyethylene glycol (PEG) and carbon dots (CDs). After incorporation with polyvinylidene fluoride and some LEs, the as‐prepared PEG–CDs composite electrolytes (PCCEs) show a high ionic conductivity of 5.5 mS/cm and an ion transference number of 0.71 at room temperature, as well as good flexibility and thermostability. When the PCCEs are assembled with lithium metal anodes and LiFePO4 or LiCoO2 cathodes, both the cycling stability and the retention rate of these LMBs show excellent performance at room temperature.

High Performance Gel Polymer Electrolyte Based on P(MMA-co-Sty) and PVDF Blend for Fast-Charging Lithium Metal Batteries with Extended Cycle Life

Abstract:In the quest for high-energy-density lithium metal batteries (LMBs), the stabilization of lithium (Li) metal anodes during fast charging remains a formidable challenge. In this study, a novel copolymer, Poly(methyl methacrylateco-styrene) (namely PMS) is synthesized and blended with Poly(vinylidene fluoride) to fabricate a porous gel polymer electrolyte (GPE, namely PMS-PVDF) through the nonsolvent-induced phase separation technique, which significantly enhances the electrochemical stability and fast-charging capabilities of LMBs. The developed GPE exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 5.62 mS cm 1, thereby reducing the formation of detrimental Li dendrites and leading to over 400 h stripping/plating process at 0.5 mA cm-2. Extensive electrochemical tests show that the LMBs with the obtained PMS-PVDF GPE achieve exceptional cycle stability over 600 and 1000 cycles at the C-rates of 0.5 and 3 C, respectively, outperforming traditional electrolytes. Furthermore, the ultrastability of the quasi-solid-state electrolyte is demonstrated in a 375 mAh pouch cell setup, suggesting an essential trait for the practical application of high-power devices. This work marks a pivotal contribution to the field of energy storage, delivering insights and a clear methodology that pave the way for the development of next-generation LMBs poised for commercial viability.
Stable Li–Metal Batteries Enabled by in Situ Gelation of an Electrolyte and In-Built Fluorinated Solid Electrolyte Interface

Abstract:Lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) are the focus of upcoming energy storage systems with extremely high-energy density. However, the leakage of liquid electrolyte and the uncontrollable dendritic Li growth on the surface of the Li anode lead to their low reversibility and safety risks. Herein, we propose a stable quasi-solid LMB with in situ gelation of liquid electrolyte and an in-built fluorinated solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on the Li anode. The gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) is readily constructed via cationic polymerization between lithium hexafluorophosphate and ether electrolyte. The fluorine-containing additive, fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), plays a crucial role in the building of a dense SEI with fast interfacial charge transport. The ex situ spectroscopic characterizations suggest that the enhanced LiF species in the SEI with the addition of FEC and the in situ optical microscopy reveal the inhibited dendritic Li growth. Moreover, GPE@FEC exhibits a high oxidative stability beyond 5.0 V (vs Li/Li+). The significantly improved Li plating/stripping efficiency (400 cycles, 98.7%) is presented for the Li∥Cu cells equipped with GPE@FEC. Decent cycling stability is also available for the cells with the LiFePO4 cathode, reflecting the feasibility of GPE@FEC for practical LMBs with enhanced stability and safety.

Abstract:The uncontrollable lithium (Li) dendrites growth and complex electrode/electrolyte interface (EEI) problems are hindering the further application of high energy density lithium metal batteries (LMBs) in practice. Herein, a bilayer heterostructure gel polymer electrolyte (BGPE) is designed by directly curing functional boron-containing monomers on the electrode surface to ensure excellent conductivity while solving the interface problems, achieving durable high voltage resistance and Li dendrites suppression. The unoccupied p-orbital boron moiety of the 3D crosslinked network in BGPE not only improves the Li+ transference number (0.78), but also enhances the interfacial stability of the Li metal and inhibits the dendrites growth by anchoring PF6- anions and regulating the uniform Li deposition, thus ensuring a long cycle for Li/BGPE/Li cells. In addition, the functional additives tris(trimethylsilyl) phosphite and tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane can preferentially oxidize and decompose to form stable B, F, and Si-rich EEIs, and effectively regulate the uniform growth of EEI. Thus, the LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2/BGPE/Li and LiFePO4/BGPE/Li full cells exhibit stable cycling and excellent rate performance. This work provides a guiding design direction to address the EEI problems for high energy density LMBs. Abstract:The commercialization of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) highly relies on developing high-performance solid electrolytes, which should possess high Li + conductivity comparable to liquid electrolytes, efficient suppression of dendrite growth, nonflammability, intimate electrode/electrolyte contact, and compatibility with the state-of-art lithium batteries industrial fabrication. Herein, we develop an in situ crosslinking method via cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) using a four-armed cross-linker and fabricate a crosslinked gel polymer electrolyte (c-GPE), where the more densely and efficiently three-dimensional (3D) crosslinked polymer network renders the c-GPE high solvent uptake and improved oxidative stability. Moreover, the strong interaction between the crosslinked polymer network and the solvent is proved to reduce the desolvation energy barrier of Li + , which facilitates homogeneous Li + deposition. Thus, the Li||LiFePO 4 battery with this in situ fabricated c-GPE demonstrates one of the longest lifespans among polymer electrolyte-based batteries at high rate (2C) so far (2000 cycles with 78% retention). Furthermore, when this in situ 3D crosslinked gel polymer electrolyte is applied together with high voltage cathode material Ni 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 , the Li|c-GPE|Ni 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 battery could deliver the best cycling performance with high nonflammability among CROP-based batteries so far (300 cycles with 80% retention). These results demonstrate that by the dedicated design of in situ polymerization, a high-performance c-GPE could be achieved to meet the requirements for practical, safe, and high-energy-density LMBs.

Abstract:Gel-polymer electrolytes are considered as a promising candidate for replacing the liquid electrolytes to address the safety concerns in Li-O-2/air batteries. In this work, by taking advantage of the hydrogen bond between thermoplastic polyurethane and aerogel SiO2 in gel polymer, a highly crosslinked quasi-solid electrolyte (FST-GPE) with multifeatures of high ionic conductivity, high mechanical flexibility, favorable flame resistance, and excellent Li dendrite impermeability is developed. The resulting gel-polymer Li-O-2/air batteries possess high reaction kinetics and stabilities due to the unique electrode-electrolyte interface and fast O-2 diffusion in cathode, which can achieve up to 250 discharge-charge cycles (over 1000 h) in oxygen gas. Under ambient air atmosphere, excellent performances are observed for coin-type cells over 20 days and for prototype cells working under extreme bending conditions. Moreover, the FST-GPE electrolyte also exhibits durability to protect against fire, dendritic Li, and H2O attack, demonstrating great potential for the design of practical Li-O-2/air batteries.

Abstract:Gel electrolytes have attracted great attention due to the high ionic conductivity and superior mechanical strength. However, poor interfacial stability between Li metal and gel electrolytes hinders their practical application. Here, a double polymer network gel electrolyte (DPNGE) is prepared via photopolymerizing branched acrylate on the poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) matrix to solve this issue. This DPNGE possesses an enhanced ionic conductivity of 9.5 × 10–4 S cm–1 at room temperature and a wide electrochemical stability window up to 5.0 V. The assembled Li/DPNGE/LiFePO4 batteries demonstrated a 153.7 mA h g–1 initial discharge capacity at 0.5 C and keep 92.7% capacity retention after more than 500 cycles. Moreover, a systematic analysis confirms that we construct a stable solid electrolyte interphase layer for homogeneous deposition and a stable cycle. Abstract:Li metal battery is a promising next-generation power storage devices, but faces the serious safety issues caused by the uncontrolled Li dendrite growth and leakage of the flammable organic electrolyte. Herein, a low-cost CA/PVDF (cellulose acetate/polyvinylidene fluoride) composite membrane is prepared via electrospinning technology for safe lithium metal batteries. This membrane (45 μm) exhibits the high porosity (76.9 %) and excellent thermally stability (>180 °C) preventing the short circuit during abuse. The CA/PVDF-based gel polymer electrolyte (GPE), fabricated with CA/PVDF electrospun membrane swelled by carbonate-based organic liquid electrolyte, delivers the ionic conductivity of 1.82 mS cm −1 and Li + transfer number of 0.506, which achieve uniform Li + ion electrodeposition and inhibit the formation of lithium dendrites. As the results, the symmetrical cell Li/CA/PVDF-based GPE/Li exhibits the impressive reversible Li stripping/plating behavior over 300 h at 1 mA cm −2 with the capacity of 1 mA h cm −2 . Furthermore, the assembled LiFePO 4 /GPE/Li battery exhibits the capacity of 101.2 mA h g −1 at 5C with the capacity retention of 94.6 % after 400 cycles, which exceeds that of traditional liquid electrolytes. This research provides a low-cost gel polymer electrolyte via the electrospinning technique for rechargeable lithium batteries with good electrochemical performance and high security.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are regarded as one of the most viable energy storage devices and their comprehensive properties are mainly controlled by solid electrolytes and interface compatibility. This work proposes an advanced poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) based gel polymer electrolyte (AP-GPEs) via functional superposition strategy, which involves incorporating butyl acrylate and polyethylene glycol diacrylate as elastic optimization framework, triethyl phosphate and fluoroethylene carbonate as flameproof liquid plasticizers, and Li-7 La-3 Zr-2 O-12 nanowires (LLZO-w) as ion-conductive fillers, endowing the designed AP-GPEs/LLZO-w membrane with high mechanical strength, excellent flexibility, low flammability, low activation energy (0.137 eV), and improved ionic conductivity (0.42 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) at 20 degrees C) due to continuous ionic transport pathways. Additionally, the AP-GPEs/LLZO-w membrane shows good safety and chemical/electrochemical compatibility with the lithium anode, owing to the synergistic effect of LLZO-w filler, flexible frameworks, and flame retardants. Consequently, the LiFePO4 /Li batteries assembled with AP-GPEs/LLZO-w electrolyte exhibit enhanced cycling performance (87.3% capacity retention after 600 cycles at 1 C) and notable high-rate capacity (93.3 mAh g(-1) at 5 C). This work proposes a novel functional superposition strategy for the synthesis of high-performance comprehensive GPEs for LMBs.

Abstract:Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) are promising candidates for next generation lithium metal batteries (LMBs) due to their reassuring safety and high ionic conductivity at room temperature. However, they are still plagued by incompatible interfaces and poor compatibility with Ni-rich cathodes, imposing great restrictions on the scalability of high-voltage cathodes. To overcome these problems, a GPE with a polyacrylonitrile porous membrane, together with 2,2,3,4,4,4-hexafluorobutyl acrylate grafted pentaerythritol tetraacrylate, is fabricated via in-situ thermal polymerization. By virtue of the effective transport channels provided by PAN and PETEA molecules, our GPE exhibits both a high lithium-ion transference number and a high ionic conductivity of 0.87 and 4.06 × 10 −3 S cm −1 , respectively at 30 °C. Moreover, the GPE ensures a high electrochemical window, stable at potentials up to 5.35 V, enabling the application of LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) cathodes. Due to the uniform cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) formed by our GPE on the surface of NCM811, the assembled NCM811|GPE|Li batteries present an excellent cycling life of 300 cycles in the voltage range of 3 ∼ 4.5 V with a capacity retention of 84% at 2C. Our study provides a novel strategy for constructing fast Li + transport channels and stable CEI membranes in LMBs operating at high voltages.
