Abstract:We demonstrate a proof-of-concept saturable absorption based pulsewidth measurement (SAPM) by exploring the intensity dependent nonlinear transmission (i.e., saturable absorption) of low-dimensional material (LDM) carbon nanotubes. A minimum pulse energy of 75 fJ is experimentally detected with an average-power-peak-power product (P-av.P-pk) of 5.44 x 10(-7) w(2) near 1550 nm. A minimum detectable pulse energy of 10 fJ with a P-av.P-pk of 1.3 x 10(-9) W-2 is estimated with further optimization. The nanometer-level thickness and femtosecond-level decay time of LDMs allow ultrafast light interaction on a very small footprint, which potentially supports chip-scale characterization of ultrafast pulses with minimum distortion. Abstract:We have demonstrated an ultracompact optical correlator for femto-second pulse measurement based on transvers second harmonic generation (TSHG) in a subwavelenth-diameter CdTe nanowire. Benefitted from the high optical nonlinearity and very small effective mode area of the nanowire, pulse energy goes down to less than 3 femtojoules per pulse.

Abstract:We have studied the ultrafast saturation behavior of a high-density well-aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes saturable absorber (HDWA-SWCNT SA), obtained by a high-pressure and high-temperature treatment of commercially available single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and related it to femtosecond erbium-doped fiber laser performance. We have observed the polarization dependence of a nonlinear optical saturation, along with a low saturation energy level of <1 fJ, limited to the detector threshold used, and the ultrafast response time of <250 fs, while the modulation depth was approximately 12%. We have obtained the generation of ultrashort stretched pulses with a low mode-locking launching threshold of ~100 mW and an average output power of 12.5 mW in an erbium-doped ring laser with the hybrid mode-locking of a VDVA-SWNT SA in combination with the effects of nonlinear polarization evolution. Dechirped pulses with a duration of 180 fs were generated, with a repetition rate of about 42.22 MHz. The average output power standard deviation was about 0.06% RMS during 3 h of measurement.

Abstract:We measure the transmission of near-infrared ps pulses through single CdTe nanowires. Benefitting from the strong light confinement and large effective nonlinearity of these nanowires, a significant spectral broadening of similar to 5 nm and nonlinear phase shift of a few pi due to self-phase modulation (SPM) is observed experimentally at coupled peak power of a dozen W with a propagating length down to several hundred grns. A nonlinear-index coefficient (n(2)) as high as (9.5 +/- 1.4) x 10(-17) m(2)/W at 1550 nm is extracted from transmission spectra, corresponding to a nonlinear parameter (gamma) of similar to 1050 W-1 m(-1). The simulations indicate a spectral broadening more than 1.5 gm in single nanowire when pumped by fs pulses in anomalous dispersion regime. The obtained results suggest that, CdTe nanowire is promising in developing ultracompact nonlinear optical devices for microphotonic circuits. Abstract:On the basis of the transverse second harmonic generation (TSHG) in a highly nonlinear subwavelength-diameter CdTe nanowire, we demonstrate a single-nanowire optical correlator for femto-second pulse measurement with pulse energy down to femtojoule (0) level. Pulses to be measured were equally split and coupled into two ends of a suspending nanowire via tapered optical fibers. The couterpropagating pulses meet each other around the central area of the nanowire, and emit TSHG signal perpendicular to the axis of the nanowire. By transferring the spatial intensity profile of the transverse second harmonic (TSH) image into the time-domain temporal profile of the input pulses, we operate the nanowire as a miniaturized optical correlator. Benefitted from the high nonlinearity and the very small effective mode area of the waveguiding CdTe nanowire, the input energy of the single-nanowire correlator can go down to fJ-level (e.g., 2 fJ/pulse for 1064 nm 200 fs pulses). The miniature fJ-pulse correlator may find applications from low power on-chip optical communication, biophotonics to ultracompact laser spectroscopy.

Abstract:We present the fabrication of a high optical quality single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite film. The composites demonstrate strong saturable absorption at ∼1.5 μm, the spectral range for optical communications. By measuring the nonlinear transmission of a sub-picosecond pump pulse through the film, we were able to deduce a saturation fluence of ∼13.9 μJ/cm2 and a modulation depth ∼16.9% (in absorption) at a high pulse fluence ∼200 μJ/cm2. Transient saturable absorption is investigated by measuring the transmitted autocorrelation traces at various incident power levels. Observed side-peak suppression indicates a fast recovery time on the scale of ∼1 ps for our saturable absorber devices. Furthermore, we use these SWNT-PVA composite saturable absorbers as mode-lockers in an Er3+ fiber ring laser and achieve ∼560 fs pulse generation with good jitter performance and long term stability. The laser performance is also associated with the parameters of our SWNT based saturable absorber.

Abstract:In the era of big data, the growing demand for data transmission capacity requires the communication band to expand from the traditional optical communication windows (similar to 1.3-1.6 mu m) to the 2 mu m band (1.8-2.1 mu m). However, the largest bandwidth (similar to 30 GHz) of the current high-speed photodetectors for the 2 mu m window is considerably less than the developed 1.55 mu m band photodetectors based on III-V materials or germanium (>100 GHz). Here, we demonstrate a high-performance carbon nanotube (CNT) photodetector that can operate in both the 2 and 1.55 mu m wavelength bands based on high-density CNT arrays on a quartz substrate. The CNT photodetector exhibits a high responsivity of 0.62 A/W and a large 3 dB bandwidth of 40 GHz (setup-limited) at 2 mu m. The bandwidth is larger than that of existing photodetectors working in this wavelength range. Moreover, the CNT photodetector operating at 1.55 mu m exhibits a setup-limited 3 dB bandwidth over 67 GHz at zero bias. Our work indicates that CNT photodetectors with high performance and low cost have great potential for future highspeed optical communication at both the 2 and 1.55 mu m bands.

Abstract:Double-walled carbon nanotubes have shown competitive properties in broadband optical pulse generation owning to the intrinsic electronic properties. Synchronization of ultrafast optical pulses in multiple wavelengths is a key technique for numerous applications, such as nonlinear frequency conversion, ultrafast pump-probe, coherent Raman scattering spectroscopy, coherent optical synthesis, etc. In this work, we demonstrate the mode-locking and synchronization of 1.55 μm pulses with 1 μm and 1.9 μm pulses via a single saturable absorber based on double-walled carbon nanotubes. The large optical nonlinearity and broadband optical absorption in the double-walled carbon nanotubes enable independent and synchronized mode-locking in >900 nm bandwidth. In addition, we present a creative concept to realize multi-wavelength synchronization from a single laser system. Our results demonstrate a straightforward and feasible approach towards pulse synchronization over ultra-broad bandwidth with flexible wavelength selection in the near-infrared region.

Abstract:A reflective single-walled carbon nanotube as saturable absorber has been firstly adopted to a passively mode-locked Nd,Y:SrF2 crystal. Without any dispersion compensation, the stably mode-locked laser delivers pulses with pulse width as short as 1.7ps, repetition rate of 107.8MHz and center wavelength of 1056nm. The oscillator produces maximum average output power of 319mW corresponding with a high slope efficiency of 20.2%. The single pulse energy and the peak power are 2.96nJ and 1.74kW, respectively. The experimental results show that single-walled carbon nanotube is an excellent saturable absorber for mode-locked lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrated an integratable passively Q-switched (PQS) Tm,Mg:LiNbO3 laser with a single-walled carbon nanotube saturable absorber (SWCNT-SA) for the first time. Its laser characteristics were investigated with different output couplers. At the pump power of 9.5W, the maximum output power of 0.93W around 1963nm was obtained with the output transmission of 1%. The optical conversion efficiency is 9.79%, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 17.4%. For pulsed operation, a shortest pulse width attained was 640ns, with the pulse repetition frequency of 44.6kHz, and the single pulse energy was 12.6μJ.

Abstract:This paper describes the method of measurement ultrafast electrical pulses with a gain switch semiconductor laser and a LiTaO3 probe tip. The results are presented. The results are comparable to the digital sampling oscilloscope with 20GHZ bandwidth. The minimum detectable voltage is 1.54mv, the temporal resolution is 25ps. The voltage sensitivity of 5.4 uv/root Hz. This system has compactness stability and broad application prospects.

Abstract:We demonstrate wide-band ultrafast optical pulse generation at 1, 1.5, and 2 μm using a single-polymer composite saturable absorber based on double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWNTs). The freestanding optical quality polymer composite is prepared from nanotubes dispersed in water with poly(vinyl alcohol) as the host matrix. The composite is then integrated into ytterbium-, erbium-, and thulium-doped fiber laser cavities. Using this single DWNT–polymer composite, we achieve 4.85 ps, 532 fs, and 1.6 ps mode-locked pulses at 1066, 1559, and 1883 nm, respectively, highlighting the potential of DWNTs for wide-band ultrafast photonics.

Abstract:The ultrabroadband photodetectors are considered to hold significant potential for applications in optical sensing and communication. In this study, we report an ultrabroadband fiber-integrated optical power sensor (FOPS) based on the photothermal effect of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The device consists of two main components: the U-shaped fiber (UF) and the photosensitive unit (PSU), wherein the PSU is comprised of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) doped with MWCNTs. Under illumination, the photothermal effect of MWCNTs causes a thermal expansion of the PDMS, resulting in compression deformation of UF and transmission spectrum blueshift. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed device achieves an optical photodetection ranging from 405 nm to 7.767 μm with a responsivity of 0.484 nm/mW. The response time exhibits a rising edge of 13 s and a falling edge of 7 s. Additionally, the device has integrated light motion tracking capability, achieving a displacement resolution of incident light as 1.25 nm/mm. As the proposed FOPS has advantages of ultrabroad detection band and high responsivity, it is a promising design for light detection.

Abstract:The future interconnect links in intra- and interchip require a photodetector with high bandwidth, ultrawide waveband, compact footprint, low cost, and compatible integration process with silicon complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) technology. Here, we demonstrate a CMOS-compatible carbon nanotube (CNT) photodetector that exhibits high responsivity, high bandwidth, and broad spectral operation over all optical telecommunication bands based on high-purity CNT arrays asymmetrically contacted by palladium and hafnium electrodes. The ultrafast CNT photodetector demonstrates the 100 Gbit/s Nyquist-shaped on–off keying (OOK) signal transmission, which can address the demand for high-speed optical interconnects in and between data centers. Furthermore, the photodetector exhibits a bandwidth over 60 GHz by scaling down the active area to 20 μm2. As the CNT photodetectors are fabricated by a doping-free process, it also provides a cost-effective solution to integrate CNT photonic devices with CNT-based CMOS-integrated circuits. Our work paves a way for future CNT-based high-speed optical interconnects and optoelectronic-integrated circuits (OEICs).

Abstract:Pulse-width of ultrashort laser is a very important parameter for the wide applications of ultrashort pulse. Various methods have been proposed to measure pulse-width, such as second harmonic generation method, third harmonic generation method and frequency resolved optical gating method. Despite of the benefits they hold, they share a vital drawback: they all employ nonlinear effects of ultrashort pulse, which means that the input power must be large enough to generate nonlinear effect, and the central wavelength of the pulse must correspond to the sensitivity range of nonlinear crystal. In this paper we present a new method of measuring pulse-width based on the Talbot effect of ultrashort laser pulse. The ultrashort pulse can be treated as a series of waves of different wavelengths, so at certain Talbot distances, the diffraction of the ultrashort laser pulse reshapes the energy distribution. Thus it gives us the possibility to determine the pulse-width by means of the diffraction. Taking advantages of Talbot effect, the method has the features of large measuring wavelength range, accurate measurement and simple structure. As the basis of the method is diffraction rather than nonlinear effect, all the problems related to nonlinear effect are avoided, such as high incident power and wavelength requirement. Both single and multiple shot pulse are suitable for this method. Numerical analysis has shown that pulse-width from I to 100fs can be measured with error of less than I fs, at wavelength of 800nm. As there is just one Talbot grating between the light source and the detector, we can make the conclusion that this very simple method of pulse-width measuring should be highly interesting for practical application.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with a narrow diameter or chirality distribution have great potential in promoting carbon nanophotonics and nanoelectronics. In this paper, SWCNTs with dominant (7,5) species, which are fabricated by chemical vapor deposition method from a magnesia-supported Co catalyst, are applied for the nonlinear optical measurements. The SWCNTs exhibit efficient saturable absorption properties at a wavelength of 640 nm in terms of a modulation depth of 27.7% and a saturable intensity of 5.7 GW/cm2. Such a 640 nm absorption is correlated with the S22 absorbance bands of the semiconducting SWCNTs. Consequently, by employing the SWCNTs as a saturable absorber (SA), stable Q-switched pulses with the shortest pulse width of 200 ns and maximum pulse repetition rate of 238 kHz are achieved at 640 nm. Our findings indicate that subnanometer semiconducting SWCNT could act as an excellent optical switcher device at 640 nm, which may help to explore potential applications in visible nonlinear optics.
