Abstract:A shape-persistent dendritic molecule, tris(4-(2,7-dibromo-9-phenyl-9-fluoren-9-yl)phenyl)amine (TF-6Br), has been readily synthesized in high yield through a concise Friedel-Crafts reaction from triphenylamine and 2,7-dibromo(9-phenyl-fluoren-9-ol). It was further employed as the key building block to achieve the synthesis of conjugated porous polymer via Sonogashira coupling with 1,4-diethynylbenzene. Under experimental reaction conditions, the resulting porous polymer shows exceptionally nanotubular morphology, which further allows for a template-free synthesis of porous carbon nanotubes via thermal treatment at high temperature. The obtained nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes feature with an improved porosity and high surface area.

Abstract:In this work, a miniemulsion template method was proposed to prepare a porous polymeric monolith with an inter-connected structure. The preparation of a porous monolith with sub-micrometer pore structure was realized and showed great potential to prepare a nanoscale porous monolith with an inter-connected structure. A medium internal phase miniemulsion was employed as a template to prepare the polymeric monolith with an open-cellular structure. The porosity was decreased to 47%, which increased the mechanical strength of the porous monolith more than 40 times compared with those prepared from conventional high internal phase emulsion polymerization methods.

Abstract:Here, a means of controlling the assembly pathways of p-conjugated oligoelectrolytes into supramolecular fibers and microtubes is presented, and it is shown how the addition of small end-caps to well-defined and pH-responsive conjugated oligomers can alter the balance between repulsive and attractive supramolecular forces and enables control of the morphology of the hierarchical assembly process. The assembly stages from nuclei to protofibers are evidenced and a hypothesis on the mechanism of microtubes formation using a combination of analytical methods is provided, revealing different degrees of order at different scales along the structural hierarchy.

Abstract:Here, a novel method is demonstrated for the preparation of three-arm branched microporous organic nanotube networks (TAB-MONNs) based on molecular templating of three-arm branched core-shell bottlebrush copolymers and Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction. The unique three-arm branched bottlebrush copolymers are synthesized by a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization, reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, and ring-opening polymerization techniques. In this approach, the length and diameter of branched tube units can be well-controlled by rational molecular design. Moreover, the as-prepared TAB-MONNs possess a high surface area and exhibit a superior adsorption capacity for Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and p-cresol.

Abstract:This work demonstrates a universal approach, based on the self-assembly of block copolymers, for the synthesis of novel conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) with bicontinuous mesostructures. Three hexaazatriphenylene (Aza)-fused CMPs (Aza-CMPs) with double diamond structures were synthesized. The study broadens the spectrum of bicontinuous porous materials and opens a new route for synthesizing CMPs with new topologies.

Abstract:As it was firstly reported in 2007, conjugated microporous polymer (CMP) has been constructed by a diversity of conjugation building blocks towards a three-dimensional rigid organic framework with the form of insoluble and infusible solid powders. Although CMP has showed the collective characteristics such as exceptional porosity, stable network structure and versatile functionality for potential applications and broad prospects in many fields, the problem of processability concerning this kind of material has not been overcome yet. To take full advantage of their features and break through the application scopes from adsorption and separation to energy and environment such as photoelectric transformation, sensing and catalysis, modulation of growth and formation of CMP in multiple scales is highly anticipated, giving rise to the micro/nanometer-size CMP microspheres and macroscopic CMP films, coatings or gels. Unambiguously, such well-organized forms either have the improved solution properties for further processing, or appear membranes directly assembled into devices. Looking back at the progress of CMP studies in recent years, there are four strategies reported to explore multi-scale CMPs, including (1) soluble CMP-like polymer, (2) solution-dispersible CMP microspheres, (3) CMP-based (composite) film, and (4) CMP-supporting organogel. In these studies, the novel polymerization methods, new catalysts or functional monomers were adopted; the resulting CMPs could be processed, assembled or combined with other materials in solution, and have greatly promoted the performances of optical sensing, photoelectric conversion, energy storage and heterogeneous catalysis on intended devices. It is noted that the reported methodologies have some limitation, but upon the creative ideas and vast explorations, CMP is going to be one important branch of porous materials with promising perspectives.

Abstract:A novel solid-state synthetic approach has been developed for the generation of conjugated nanoporous polymer networks. Using mechanochemical-assisted oxidative coupling polymerization, we demonstrated a rapid and solvent-free synthesis of conjugated polycarbazoles with high porosities and promising CO2 storage abilities. This innovative approach constitutes a new direction for the development of novel nanoporous polymer frameworks through sustainable solid-state assembly pathways, and may open up new possibilities for the rational design and synthesis of nanoporous materials for carbon capture.

Abstract:Templated synthesis of poly(cyclotriphosphaze-co-4,4 -sulonyldiphenol) nanotubes (see figure) via a one-pot approach was achieved by the in situ formation of triethylammonium chloride nanocrystals during the polymerization. The triethylammonium chloride templates can eventually be removed by washing with water. The dimensions of the nanotubes can be controlled by modification of the experimental conditions.

Abstract:Novel uniform cyclomatrix-type polyphosphazene (PPZ) nanotubes with closed ends (similar to 30 nm inner diameter, similar to 100 nm outer diameter and several micrometers long) were selectively prepared using an in situ template method. The structure and morphology of the PPZ nanotubes were determined by a wide range of spectroscopic, microscopic and analytical methods. TGA experiments were carried out to study their thermal stability. Based on the characterization results, a formation mechanism of the nanotubes was proposed. (C) 2008 Acta Materialia Inc. Conducting polymer and carbon mesoporous structures by electrochemical syntheses

Abstract:We have recently demonstrated the controlled synthesis of conducting polymer microcontainers through electrochemical generation of surfactant-stabilized gas bubbles (soap bubble) on the working electrode, followed by electrochemical polymerization of appropriate monomers around the wall of the "soap bubble" template. The conducting polymer mesoporous structures thus produced have been demonstrated to display unusual morphologies, depending on the size and geometrical shape of the gas bubbles generated and the electropolymerization conditions. By pre-patterning the working electrode surface with nonconducting polymers through microcontact printing (mu CP) or plasma patterning, we have produced conducting polymer mesoporous structures in a patterned fashion. The resulting conducting polymer mesoporous structures could be used for controlled drug release and multichannel sensing applications. By electrodepositing appropriate metal nanoparticles within the pores of an alumina membrane, we have also prepared aligned carbon nanotubes with improved order and fewer structural defects. Based on the membrane-template method for the nanotube growth, we have successfully carried out the electrochemical deposition of conducting polymers into the nanotube innercores within the nanoporous Al2O3 pores with the alumina template membrane acting as the protection layer for the nanotube outerwall. In this article, we will summarize our work on the electrochemical synthesis and structural characterization of conducting polymer and carbon mesoporous structures, along with some of their potential applications.

Abstract:We report a simple confined self-assembly process to synthesize nanoporous one-dimensional photoactive nanostructures. Through surfactant-assisted cooperative interactions (e.g., π-π stacking, ligand coordination, and so forth) of the macrocyclic building block, zinc meso-tetra (4-pyridyl) porphyrin (ZnTPyP), self-assembled ZnTPyP nanowires and nanorods with controlled diameters and aspect ratios are prepared. Electron microscopy characterization in combination with X-ray diffraction and gas sorption experiments indicate that these materials exhibit stable single-crystalline and high surface area nanoporous frameworks with well-defined external morphology. Optical characterizations using UV-vis spectroscopy and fluorescence imaging and spectroscopy show enhanced collective optical properties over the individual chromophores (ZnTPyP), favorable for exciton formation and transport.

Abstract:We report the pH-driven formation of a dynamic 2-D porous hetero-structure through assembly-disassembly switching of the stacked macrocycles of nanotubules and their subsequent spreading on the surfaces of a self-sorted sheet assembly in a hierarchical co-assembly. The 2-D ordered porous heterostructure is able to discriminate spherical C-60 from flat coronene through shape selective adsorption.

Pathway Control of Π‐conjugated Supramolecular Polymers by Incorporating Donor‐Acceptor Functionality

Abstract:Controlling the nanoscale orientation of π‐conjugated systems remains challenging due to the complexity of multiple energy landscapes involved in the supramolecular assembly process. In this study, we have developed an effective strategy for programming the pathways of π‐conjugated supramolecular polymers, by incorporating both electron‐rich methoxy‐ or methanthiol‐benzene as donor unit and electron‐poor cyano‐vinylenes as acceptor units on the monomeric structure. It leads to the formation of parallel‐stacked supramolecular polymers as the metastable species through homomeric donor/acceptor packing, which convert to slip‐stacked supramolecular polymers as the thermodynamically stable species facilitated by heteromeric donor‐acceptor packing. By further investigating the external seed‐induced kinetic‐to‐thermodynamic transformation behaviors, our findings suggest that the donor‐acceptor functionality on the seed structure is crucial for accelerating pathway conversion. This is achieved by eliminating the initial lag phase in the supramolecular polymerization process. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into designing molecular structures that control aggregation pathways of π‐conjugated nanostructures.

Abstract:Novel nanotubular titania/polymer composite materials are synthesized via complete and nanometer-precise morphological replication of a porous alumina membrane with titania/polymer nanocomposite thin films. The obtained titania/polymer nanocomposite tubing is physically flexible, and can be seen as a new type of soft matter. Latex colloidal microspheres are encapsulated into the resultant nanotubing to form a unique free-standing 'micro-beanpod' colloidal assembly. Removal of the polymer components from the nanocomposite tubings by low-temperature oxygen plasma treatment yields titania nanotubes with porous walls. The resulting mesopores are subsequently employed as a nanoreactor for the chemical formation of gold nanoparticles to give a novel, nanostructured, particle-in-wall nanotubular hybrid. The nano-architectures demonstrated herein are generally applicable to the syntheses of various ceramic-polymer composite nanotubes and nanoparticle-nanotube hybrids.

Abstract:Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is a powerful technique to synthesize assemblies with various morphologies. However, PISA mediated by long, stabilizing chains usually produces kinetically trapped spheres; thus, the morphology evolution remains a challenge. Here, a convenient and general strategy for facilitating the morphological evolution by the copolymerization of solvophilic monomers is reported. With the incorporation of only 7% (molar ratio) solvophilic 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TESPMA) into poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(benzyl methacrylate) (PDMA-b-PBzMA) spheres, PDMA-b-P(BzMA-co-TESPMA) assemblies evolve from spheres to worms, octopi-like and jellyfish-like structures, vesicles, and large compound vesicles. This non-specific effect is further confirmed by the copolymerization of BzMA with other solvophilic monomers, including N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMA), N,N-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEA), and 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA). This work provides a convenient approach to promote morphology evolution and develops the formulations design of PISA.
