Abstract:The emergence of network virtualization solves the problem of ossification. At the same time, it provides endless possibilities for the innovations of the network architecture. As a result, it has attracted the attention of the next generation Internet architecture. Therefore this paper based on the architecture of For CES to explore the implementation of the data plane virtualization and provide the framework for virtualization platform via the method. Meanwhile, in the premise of meeting the requirements which the virtual network packet has enough processing capacity. For the sake of solving the allocation of FE resource in virtual network (Forwarding Element, FE). To make the number of FE and the utilization of FE more reasonable. This paper puts forward a kind of FE resource allocation algorithm based on twice iteration subtraction. We use Click Modular Router as the data plane processing engine, then we give the virtual method to realize data plane and explain that supporting multiple virtual network and the virtualization of FE can provide more flexibility for processing data packets.

Abstract:Recently, Programmable Data Plane (PDP) has been leveraged to offload Network Functions (NFs). Due to its high processing capabilities, programmable data plane can improve the performance of NFs to more than one order of magnitude. However, the coarse-grained NF orchestration granularity on the PDP makes it hard to fulfill the dynamic service chain demands. In this paper, we propose the Flexible Network Function (FlexNF) Deployment on the programmable data plane. We first design an NF Selection Framework which leverages labels and the pipeline re-enter operation to support Selective Serving Mechanism for flexible NF orchestration. We then design a two-stage service path construction algorithm to provide on-path service based on SSM with load balancing taken into account. We implement 7 types of real network functions in the commodity P4 switch, based which we construct the comprehensive experiments. The results show that FlexNF can reduce the traffic routing delay by about 42.6% while increasing service chain acceptance rate by 5 times compared with current solutions.

Abstract:Programmable Data Plane (PDP) has been leveraged to offload Network Functions (NFs). Due to its high processing capability, the PDP improves the performance of NFs by more than one order of magnitude. However, the coarse-grained NF orchestration on the PDP makes it hard to fulfill the dynamic service chain demands and unreasonable network function deployment causes long end-to-end delays. In this paper, we propose the Flexible Network Function (FlexNF) deployment on the PDP. First, we design an NF Selection Framework, leveraging the service selection label and re-entering operations for flexible NF orchestration. Second, to support runtime NF reconfiguration to meet the dynamic flow demands, we propose the Per-Flow On-Demand servicing mechanism, where one Match-Action Table with multiple mixed NFs works as different NFs for different flows. Third, to ensure the QoS of flows, on the one hand, we design an SP-aware NF Placement Algorithm to find a near-optimal placement solution that accommodates peak traffic volume while minimizing the overall routing path lengths of all the requests, on the other hand, we design a Two-Stage Service Path Construction Algorithm to provide on-path service while considering load balancing. We implement 15 types of network functions on the P4 switch, based on which we construct the comprehensive experiments. FlexNF reduces the traffic delay by 42.6% while increasing the service chain acceptance rate by five times compared with current solutions. Besides, when switching functions, the FlexNF improves the throughput by 2.04Gbps and reduces the packet loss by 8.269% compared with current solutions.

Abstract:The service provider edge is responsible for connecting customers using standard protocols such as IP and BGP to the service providers internal network while enforcing service specific policies and service guarantees. Today this function is performed by the Provider Edge Router (PE). The specialized nature of the PE, however, restricts operational flexibility and their monolithic design impacts reliability. In this paper, we propose a new edge router architecture following SDN and NFV principals called EdgePlex. EdgePlex is a distributed system where the functions performed by a traditional edge router are decomposed and assigned to different elements in the system. A key aspect of our design is the use of a sandboxed environment (through the use of virtual machines) per customer. This gives EdgePlex the ability to isolate customers from one-another and independently move customers within and across EdgePlex platforms. We describe the architecture and a prototype implementation of EdgePlex. We perform detailed experiments using this prototype and show that EdgePlex is able to saturate the server in terms of throughput while having acceptable latency and jitter overheads. Our results lead us to believe that the EdgePlex design not only addresses the limitations of existing routers, but is also viable and can meet performance demands of production networks.

Abstract:Due to the prominent performance on networking virtualization and programmability, OpenFlow is widely regarded as a promising control plane technology in packet-switched IP networks as well as wavelength-switched optical networks. For the purpose of applying software programmable feature to future optical networks, we propose an OpenFlow-based control plane in Flexi-Grid optical networks. Experimental results demonstrate its feasibility of dynamic lightpath establishment and adjustment via extended OpenFlow protocol. Wireshark captures of the signaling procedure are printed out. Additionally, the overall latency including signaling and hardware for lightpath setup and adjustment is also reported.

Abstract:Large-scale data centers support various applications and process/issue terabits per second traffic from/to Internet. On the boundary of data center, the gateway needs to execute a series of network functions for each incoming packet. The Network Function Virtualization (NFV) technology leverages commodity servers to flexibly implement network functions. This solution provides satisfying processing and storage capability. However, state-of-the-art NFV platforms can merely process network functions at the line rate of 10~40Gbps. Supporting throughput of terabits per second requires dozens or even hundreds of servers operating exclusively for network functions, which is not only expensive but also difficult to maintain. On the other hand, programmable packet processing hardwares proposed in recent years offer a new platform for implementing network functions. They can execute user-defined packet processing logics at ultra-high line rate while containing limited processing and storage resources. The software network function platform and programmable packet processing hardware own complementary features, which inspire us to combine them together to propose the heterogeneous gateway platform called FlexGate. Based on the observations of traffic pattern and function features, we propose an efficient way to deploy network functions and matching rules in hardware/software to give full play to their respective advantages. In programmable hardware, to further optimize resource utilization, a new load balance scheme is proposed to spread load. Experiments show that FlexGate can execute realistic workload at the rate of at least 1.5Tbps, and the average latency is 1.28μs.
FlexMesh: Flexibly Chaining Network Functions on Programmable Data Planes at Runtime

Abstract:Programmable data planes (PDP) enable operators to implement various functions (e.g. routing and access control) on high-performance switches and define the chains of these functions with a switch profile. However, with the number of deployed functions increasing, the switch profile faces growing complexity during development and inflexibility to chain functions at runtime. This paper presents FlexMesh, an integrated platform which aims to introduce flexibility and simplicity to PDP while being compatible with existing programmable devices. FlexMesh designs (1) a set of chaining primitives, so operators can easily describe the function chain for each flow without facing the complexity of customizing the switch profile during development; and (2) a data plane model that can be reconfigured at runtime and can flexibly construct user-desired function chains. We implement FlexMesh based on P4 and evaluate it on various targets. Results indicate that with minor performance overheads, FlexMesh can be an efficient development-assistance tool for operators, as well as an automated platform to chain NFs flexibly while keeping conformance to complex policies.

Abstract:Although the fifth-generation wireless communication network (5G) has made much progress in improving the quality of user experience by providing large bandwidth transmission, it only provides the connectivity services between user equipments (UEs) and the network. With the sensing and intelligence are envisioned to become the native capability of the sixth-generation communication network (6G), there is an urgent need for a new network architecture enabling the “on-path-data-processing”, to make better leverage of distributed and ubiquitous computation resources and data. Thus, we propose a Data Plane in 6G network, which is independent of existing User Plane, aiming at constructing data pipelines based on various data service requirements. It systematically provides the collaboration of data among multiple network components with arbitrary topology with the support for on-path-data-processing. Based on this, we propose three data forwarding control protocols, guaranteeing the operation of Data Plane by providing data forwarding in any topology. Simulation experiments demonstrate the good scalability and efficiency of the three protocols in Data Plane.
A High-Performance and Flexible Architecture for Accelerating SDN on the MPSoC Platform

Abstract:Software-defined networking has been developing in recent years and the separation of the control plane and the data plane has made networks more flexible. Due to its flexibility, the software method is used to implement the data plane. However, with increasing network speed, the CPU is becoming unable to meet the requirements of high-speed packet processing. FPGAs are usually used as dumb switches to accelerate the data plane, with all intelligence centralized in the remote controller. However, the cost of taking the intelligence out of the switch is the increased latency between the controller and the switch. Therefore, we argue that the control decisions should be made as locally as possible. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture with high performance and flexibility for accelerating SDN based on the MPSoC platform. The control plane is implemented in the on-chip CPU and the data plane is implemented in the FPGA logic. The communication between the two components is performed using Ethernet communication. We design a high-performance TCAM based on distributed RAM. The architecture employs a pipeline design with modules connected via the AXI Stream interface. The designed architecture is flexible enough to support multiple network functions while achieving high performance at 100 Gbps. As far as we know, the architecture is the first proposed in the design of a 100 Gbps system.
LENV: A New Light-Weighted Edge Network Virtualization Framework in Software-Defined Wireless Networks

Abstract:With the proliferation of mobility demands and network services, network operators in enterprise Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) must implement a flexible and centralized network management to keep pace with this trend. Unfortunately, due to the inflexible network architecture and closed network equipments, the traditional network faces a series of challenges, like network expansibility and mobility issues. In this paper, we propose a new architecture named Light-weighted Edge Network Virtualization (LENV), which achieves edge network functions virtualization by leveraging the Software Defined Networking (SDN) approach in enterprise WLAN. LENV virtualizes edge network functions towards a centralized logical module which hosts in the wireless access point (AP) for each client under the controller's strategies. Therefore, network functions can be deployed more flexibly based on client's requirements and network status. In addition, combined management schemes consisting of association control, access control and mobility management have been considered and studied in LENV, which ensure enterprise WLAN extensible and stable. In the end, our further simulation shows that LENV can significantly benefit mobility and security in enterprise WLAN.

Abstract:Along with the growing expansion of network functions and continuous emerging of new protocols, the novel packet types and processing requirements are established in these protocols. The Software Defined Networking (SDN) makes the network innovation simpler based on the programmable flow table. However, it is still difficult for the SDN to support the arbitrary protocol processing. This paper takes into account the parsing and lookup procedure together, and proposes a hardware structure that could support elastic customization of the arbitrary protocols. By transforming the protocol processing procedure into a multi branched tree, users can arbitrarily define their own parsing and lookup processing, which is mapped into a hardware pipeline. The prototype on FPGA platform shows its flexibility in customizing protocols. The packet processing speed can achieve 390Gbps in hardware and the hardware resource utilization is significantly reduced compared to the existing scheme. The proposed architecture is quite meaningful for the data plane design of the SDN.

Abstract:Network virtualization allows multiple logical networks to coexist on the same physical infrastructure. However, existing virtualization techniques do not work well for data plane. Software-based virtualization techniques suffer from poor performance due to high virtualization overhead while hardware-based virtualization techniques are not flexible due to limited programmability. In this paper, we present Virtualizing Programmable Data Plane (VirtPDP), an architecture to achieve scalability, flexibility, and isolation simultaneously. Specifically, VirtPDP proposes a parallel pipeline structure by extending programmable data plane to parallelly execute multiple virtual networks on a programmable switch. With VirtPDP, each virtual network runs independently to guarantee performance isolation. Additionally, VirtPDP uses a multi-controller control plane structure to independently manage virtual networks on the programmable switch. We implement the VirtPDP prototype both on BMv2 target and Tofino target. The experimental results show that compared to existing work, VirtPDP not only realizes parallel operation of multiple virtual networks with low performance loss, but also provides better flexibility and scalability. Meanwhile, Tofino-based VirtPDP performs much better than DPDK-based NativeP4 while realizing the coexistence of multiple virtual networks.

Abstract:Traffic from mobile wireless networks has been growing at a fast pace in recent years and is expected to surpass wired traffic very soon. Service providers face significant challenges at such scales including providing seamless mobility, efficient data delivery, security, and provisioning capacity at the wireless edge. In the Mobility First project, we have been exploring clean slate enhancements to the network protocols that can inherently provide support for at-scale mobility and trustworthiness in the Internet. An extensible data plane using pluggable compute-layer services is a key component of this architecture. We believe these extensions can be used to implement in-network services to enhance mobile end-user experience by either off-loading work and/or traffic from mobile devices, or by enabling en-route service-adaptation through context-awareness (e.g., Knowing contemporary access bandwidth). In this work we present details of the architectural support for in-network services within Mobility First, and propose protocol and service-API extensions to flexibly address these pluggable services from end-points. As a demonstrative example, we implement an in network service that does rate adaptation when delivering video streams to mobile devices that experience variable connection quality. We present details of our deployment and evaluation of the non-IP protocols along with compute-layer extensions on the GENI test bed, where we used a set of programmable nodes across 7 distributed sites to configure a Mobility First network with hosts, routers, and in-network compute services.

In line with the current and emerging 5G architectural principles, visions, and standards, the proposed infrastructure is established primarily based on a mobile edge computing paradigm. It leverages cloud computing, software‐defined networking, and network function virtualization as core enabling technologies. Several technical solutions and options have been analyzed. As a result, a novel portable 5G infrastructure testbed has been prototyped to enable the preliminary testing of the integrated key technologies and to provide a realistic execution platform for further investigating and evaluating software‐defined networking– and network function virtualization–based application scenarios in 5G networks.</p>

Abstract:Software-defined elastic optical networks (SD-EONs) provide operators more flexibility to customize their optical infrastructure dynamically and adaptively, and network virtualization, i.e., infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), enables multiple tenants to share the substrate infrastructure efficiently. In this paper, we study how to provision virtual SD-EONs (vSD-EONs) with the correlated data and control plane embedding (χ-VNE) that considers the quality-of-service (QoS) of virtual control plane (vCP), i.e., availability and control channel latency. We propose a χ-VNE algorithm to solve the problem, design the network system to realize it, and accomplish proof-of-concept experimental demonstrations in an OpenFlow-based network testbed. Numerical and experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm and system function well and can realize on-demand and reliable vSD-EON provisioning.

Abstract:In this letter, we present flexible traffic engineering (F-TE), a solution to achieve highly efficient traffic engineering in a hybrid network where IPv4 and IPv6 protocols co-exist. By leveraging the programmability of OpenFlow (OF), we design the OF system to facilitate IP forwarding interchanging (i.e., switching the packets between IPv4 and IPv6 at each hop according to the network status). The OF system is implemented in a real network testbed. We conduct experiments with video streaming to verify that the proposed F-TE can improve network throughput effectively with adaptive IP interchanging.
