Abstract:Four kinds of 0(CK), 16.5%, 33.3% and 50% thinning intensities were carried out in 10-year-old stand of slash pine. Thinning distinctly increased growth increments of diameter at breast height and volume of slash pine trees after 7 years and was effective method for culturing larger diameter wood. Volume per hectare and total volume increment per hectare (include volume of thinned trees in stand) of thinned stand for slash pine were more bigger than those of CK. There are not significant effects of thinning on tracheid anatomical features (tracheid dull wall thickness-diameter ratio, tracheid diameter-width ratio, MFA in S_2 layer of tracheid), wood air - dried properties (shrinkage percent in radial, tangential and axial direction of wood) and wood chemical constitute content (extractives, cellulose, pentosan, lignin and helocellulose). The negative effects of thinning on tracheid length and tracheid-width ratio were significant at 0.05 level. Combined with growth increments per hectare of thinned stands, 33.3%~50.0% thinning intensities were suitable for culturing pulpwood for slash pine. In the stand of 50.0% thinning intensity for slash pine, the proportion of large diameter^s wood is high and per hectare and total volume increment per hectare were larger also. Among stands for four kinds of thinning intensities, wood from 50% thinning intensity stand possesses the largest latewood percent, largest basic density, largest compressing strength along grain of wood and best flexural properties (MOR and MOE). This thinning intensity in slash pine plantation is the best suitable for culturing construction timber.
