Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) derived from biomass is a versatile platform chemical for producing various degradable polymers, especially polyethylene 2,5-furandicarbox-ylate (PEF). To reduce the high cost of feedstock, fructose instead of expensive 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was used as the feedstock for producing FDCA in the acetic acid (HOAc) solvent by a one-pot, two-step method. Fructose was first catalytically converted into HMF and 5-acetoxymethylfurfural (AMF) in HOAc over the Amberlyst-15 catalyst. After the separation of only Amberlyst-15, the in situ-formed HMF and AMF were further catalytically oxidized to FDCA by air (oxygen) over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts following the free-radical chain reaction mechanism. HOAc was not only used as the solvent for the dehydration and following oxidation process but also served as the effective co-catalyst for the dehydration of fructose. The effects of catalyst species, dosage, and reaction temperature on the dehydration process and oxidation temperature on FDCA yield and purity were evaluated systematically. Under the optimized reaction conditions, a total yield of HMF and AMF of 50% and a final FDCA yield of 35% were achieved. Combined with experimental results and theoretical calculation, the reaction mechanism for fructose dehydration side reactions and the HMF and AMF oxidation reactions was proposed correspondingly. The proposed two-step, one-pot method using fructose as the starting material is a promising route for the commercial production of FDCA with the simple operation and viable yield.

Abstract:The one-pot synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from glucose as a cheap feedstock under mild conditions continues to be challenging for the chemical industry. Herein, a solid acid-base bifunctional catalyst was prepared by the postsynthetic modification of MCM-41 mesoporous silica with 3-chloropropyltriethoxysilane and subsequent anchoring of sulfanilic acid to its surface. A combination of N-2 sorption, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy studies proved that the ordered mesostructure of MCM-41 was preserved during the process of catalyst preparation. The as-synthesized catalyst was successful in the one-pot production of HMF from glucose in an aqueous medium. The influences of numerous reaction parameters on the HMF yield were examined in detail. In optimal circumstances, 89% HMF was obtained by glucose conversion at 100 degrees C and 120 min using 20 mg of catalyst. Remarkably, the catalyst was tested up to six recycles and demonstrated no observable drop in catalytic performance, indicating its potential for industry applications.

Abstract:The selective reductive amination of levulinic acid (LA) into pyrrolidone derivatives is regarded as one of the most promising reactions in the fields of biomass conversion into high value-added chemicals. Herein, we report a one-pot synthesis of N -substituted-5-methyl-2-pyrrolidones by reductive amination of LA/ester with nitriles over several commercial catalysts. Among the catalysts texted, Pd/C was found to be the most efficient for the reductive amination of LA/ester with various nitriles to give high yields of pyrrolidones (up to 92%) under mild reaction conditions (80 °C, 1.6 MPa H 2 , tetrahydrofuran solvent). And the catalyst showed good reusability.

Abstract:Corn stover derived hydrochar (HC) doped with aluminum nanoparticles was synthesized through the facile onepot hydrothermal carbonization for glucose to fructose isomerization. Amorphous aluminum nanoparticles with crystalline size less than 0.5 nm were uniformly loaded on hydrochar. The phase of the Al-oxide nanoparticles was tailored through aerobic/anaerobic calcination. The results showed that the amorphous aluminum nanocrystals with six coordinated Al-oxide structure were formed under oxygen calcination, which facilitated the high catalytic activity and selectivity of glucose isomerization. It was found that catalysts prepared at hydrothermal temperature of 180 degrees C and further calcinated at 300 degrees C under aerobic condition (Al/HC180-300/O) achieved a fructose yield of 42.6% and a selectivity of 83.6% at 180 degrees C for 5 min. The kinetics, catalytic mechanism, and the deactivation mechanism of the glucose to fructose were further studied using Al/HC180-300/O catalyst. This study provides a high energy efficiency and low metal loading carbon-based catalysts synthetic approach applicable for biorefinery.

Abstract:In this work, one-pot synthesis of biofuel-valerolactone (GVL) and valeric acid (VA) from biomass-derived levulinic acid (LA) are highly selectively produced on a series of robust Pd-nanoparticle catalysts. These fine Pd nanoparticles are controllably synthesized and confined in the mesoporous channel of MCM-41-derived supports via a green solvent CO2-assited method. A combination analysis tools are used to study physical properties and elucidate the relationship between the structure and performances. The catalytic results display 5 wt% Pd/AlMCM-41 exhibits the best performances of 88.5% GVL yield at the perfect conversion of LA. Moreover, without the isolation of GVL intermediate, it can also efficiently catalyze the one-pot conversion of LA to VA with 45.1% yield. Besides, Pd-nanoparticle catalysts maintain stable structure and good catalytic performances over several runs.

Abstract:A novel carbon based strong acid catalyst has been synthesized through the sulfonation of the carbon materials from glucose. The novel acid catalyst was obtained through the hydrothermal carbonization instead of the traditional heat treatment, which made the carbonization process under much milder condition with higher yield. The novel heterogeneous catalyst owned the advantages of high acidity as much as 2.0 mmol/g, much higher than that of Nafion and Amberlyst-15 (0.8 mmol/g). The catalytic activities of the catalyst were investigated through the acetalization. The results showed that the novel catalyst was very efficient for the reaction. The novel carbon based acid catalyst holds great potential in the green chemical process.

Abstract:Gluconic acid is a valuable commodity in various industries such as pharmaceuticals, food, and construction. As the demand for gluconic acid grows, the development of its efficient and cost‐effective production methods has become a prominent research priority. Enzymatic synthesis has emerged as a promising approach for the production of gluconic acid due to its numerous advantages such as being eco‐friendly, highly efficient, and cost‐effective. Furthermore, the one‐pot catalytic method simplifies production equipment and operational steps. This concept review discusses the latest development in the field of multi‐enzymatic hybrid catalysts and chemo‐enzymatic hybrid catalysts for the one‐pot cascade catalytic production of gluconic acid. Perspectives for further research in this field are also provided to promote the application of multi‐enzyme complex cascade catalytic systems in extensive areas of organic synthesis.

Abstract:The synthesis of biofuel γ-valerolactone (GVL) from accessible biomass is an attractive and challenging goal. Here, we report an efficient, one-pot, and mild strategy for the efficient production of GVL from various biomass saccharides without using any homogeneous acid as a co-catalyst and molecular hydrogen as a hydrogen donor. A versatile porous tin-containing material (Sn(M)-S) was designed as an individual heterogeneous catalyst. As high as 68.4% yield of GVL form glucose was achieved in the presence of ammonia borane as a solid hydrogen donor under mild conditions, with GVL yields of 76.2%, 68.9%, 62.5%, and 52.2% being obtained from fructose, sucrose, cellobiose, and cellulose, respectively. The synergistic effect of Sn and sulfonic acid group in Sn(M)-S not only provides appropriate Lewis acid sites to promote the isomerization of glucose into fructose but also affords abundant Brønsted sites for the following conversion steps. Moreover, Sn(M)-S(1) showed good stability and reusability during consecutive recycles.

Abstract:γ-valerolactone (GVL) is an important lignocellulosic platform molecule with huge potential for various industrial and chemical applications, which is usually produced by using Levulinic acid (LA) or its esters as raw materials. However, a two-step reaction process that the hydrogenation of carbonyl groups on metal sites and subsequent lactonization catalyzed by acidic sites over multiple catalysts were generally needed to realize this synthesis. Herein, in this work, a hierarchically multifunctional single catalyst Ru/HPW/HP-UiO-66, simultaneously integrated with acidic and metal sites has been fabricated via a simple strategy and successfully applied in the one-pot synthesis of GVL by using methyl levulinate (ML) as raw materials. The hierarchically porous and nanosized (~15 nm) HP-UiO-66 not only can provide sufficient space for the mass transfer of substrates but also favors the loading of bulk HPW molecules, which can effectively mediate the catalytic activities and stability of Ru NPs by using the confined pore effect of UiO-66 and strong interaction between HPW and Ru. When applied in the one-pot synthesis of GVL, the hierarchical Ru/HPW/HP-UiO-66 catalyst showed excellent catalytic activity (> 97% yield) and stability (maintained after successive 7 cycles) for GVL. More importantly, the hierarchically catalyst also exhibited extraordinary performance in the hydrogenation of different unsaturated hydrocarbons under aqueous solution. It is expected that our study will open a novel route to biomass upgrade involving metal/acid bifunctional synergistic catalysts.

Abstract:To eco-friendly catalyze glucose to levulinic acid, recyclable acid catalyst has been researched. The synthesis process of propyl sulfonic acid functionalized SBA-15 was improved and the hydrophobic treatment was performed. The structure and functional groups of materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and simultaneous thermal analysis. The catalytic activity, recyclability and hydrothermal stability of CH3-SBA-15-SO3H material were researched. The highest yield of levulinic acid at 61.56% was obtained at 180 ℃ for 2.5 h in γ-GVL-water solvent system, and the yield of levulinic acid was only decreased by 2% after 4 times reuse. The high degree of silicon polycondension and hydrophobic surface of CH3-SBA-15-SO3H were the key to maintain the hydrothermal stability. The CH3-SBA-15-SO3H solid acid had great potential in development and utilization of biomass resources.

Abstract:The catalytic conversion of cellulose to lactic acid (LA) has garnered significant attention in recent years due to the potential of cellulose as a renewable and sustainable biomass feedstock. Here, a series of Au/W-ZnO catalysts were synthesized and employed to transform cellulose into LA. Through the optimization of reaction parameters and catalyst compositions, we achieved complete cellulose conversion with a selectivity of 54.6% toward LA over Au/W-ZnO at 245 °C for 4 h. This catalyst system also proved effective at converting cotton and kenaf fibers. Structural and chemical characterizations revealed that the synergistic effect of W, ZnO, and Au facilitated mesoporous architecture generation and the establishment of an adequate acidic environment. The catalytic process proceeded through the hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose, isomerization to fructose, and its subsequent conversion to LA, with glucose isomerization identified as the rate-limiting step. These findings provide valuable insights for developing high-performance catalytic systems to convert cellulose.

Abstract:In the present work, for the first time the CS2.5H0.5PW12O40/SBA-15 catalysts were prepared as highly efficient catalysts for the direct production of glutaric acid (GAC) via selective oxidation of cyclopentane-1,2-diol by using aqueous hydrogen peroxide as the green oxidant. The yield of GAC is higher than 88%. The fresh catalyst and the recovered ones were all characterized by XRD, FT-IR, Raman and P-31 MAS NMR to reveal the structure change during the reaction. XRD results revealed that the Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40/SBA-15 catalysts keep the crystalline structure of the as-prepared CS2.5H0.5PW12O40. And it is found that the structure of the Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40/SBA-15 catalysts was retained after the reaction, as determined by Raman, FT-IR and (31)p MAS NMR. The new CS2.5H0.5PW12O40/SBA-15 catalyst can be easily recycled after reaction and can be reused six times, indicating its excellent stability. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Efficient Co-Synthesis of Glycolic Acid and Formic Acid from 1,3-Dihydroxyacetone by Keggin Cesium Phosphomolybdates

Abstract:The increasing depletion of fossil fuel resources promote the study of conversion of renewable biomass resources to valuable chemicals. Formic acid (FA) is regarded as desirable liquid hydrogen carrier. Glycolic acid (GA) has been extensively used for the treatment of photoaging and wrinkles. It is meaningful to explore novel catalysts for the selective oxidation of bio-platform molecules into FA and GA. Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs) were firstly explored as catalysts for the oxidation of 1,3-dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which is an important biomass based platform molecule, to obtain GA and FA in the presence H2O2.The effect of catalyst structure and composition, and the reaction conditions on DHA oxidation were investigated. Among the chosen compounds, Cs3PMo12O40 exhibited the best catalytic activity, with 86.4 % and 82.6 % yields of GA and FA, respectively. The five successive recycling experiments indicated that Cs3PMo12O40 had good stability and reusability. The catalytic activity of Cs3PMo12O40 was better than that of the other types of catalysts reported. This work give a clue for utilizing POMs as catalysts for the valorization of biomass derivatives to useful fine chemicals under mild conditions.

Abstract:D-glucuronic acid is a kind of glucose derivative, which has excellent properties such as anti-oxidation, treatment of liver disease and hyperlipidemia, and has been widely used in medicine, cosmetics, food and other fields. The traditional production methods of D-glucuronic acid mainly include natural extraction and chemical synthesis, which can no longer meet the growing market demand. The production of D-glucuronic acid by biocatalysis has become a promising alternative method because of its high efficiency and environmental friendliness. This review describes different production methods of D-glucuronic acid, including single enzyme catalysis, multi-enzyme cascade, whole cell catalysis and co-culture, as well as the intervention of some special catalysts. In addition, some feasible enzyme engineering strategies are provided, including the application of enzyme immobilized scaffold, enzyme mutation and high-throughput screening, which provide good ideas for the research of D-glucuronic acid biocatalysis.

Abstract:Glucosylglycerate (R-2-O-α-D-glucopyranosyl-glycerate, GG) is a negatively charged compatible solution with versatile functions. Here, an artificial in vitro enzymatic cascade was designed to feasibly and sustainably produce GG from affordable starch and glycerol. First, Spirochaeta thermophila glucosylglycerate phosphorylase (GGP) was carefully selected because of its excellent heterologous expression, specific activity, and thermostability. The optimized two-enzyme cascade, consisting of alpha-glucan phosphorylase (αGP) and GGP, achieved a remarkable 81 % conversion rate from maltodextrin and D-glycerate. Scaling up this cascade resulted in a practical concentration of 58 g/L GG with a 62 % conversion rate based on the added D-glycerate. Additionally, the production of GG from inexpensive starch and glycerol in one-pot using artificial four-enzyme cascade was successfully implemented, which integrates alditol oxidase and catalase with αGP and GGP. Collectively, this sustainable enzymatic cascade demonstrates the feasibility of the practical synthesis of GG and has the potential to produce other glycosides using the phosphorylase-and-phosphorylase paradigm.

Abstract:The utilization of biomass has recently attracted tremendous attention as a potential alternative to petroleum for the production of liquid fuels and chemicals. We report an efficient alcohol‐mediated reactive extraction strategy by which a hydrophobic mixture of butyl levulinate and formate esters, derived from cellulosic biomass, can be converted to valuable γ‐valerolactone (GVL) by a simple supported gold catalyst system without need of an external hydrogen source. The essential role of the supported gold is to facilitate the rapid and selective decomposition of butyl formate to produce a hydrogen stream, which enables the highly effective reduction of butyl levulinate into GVL. This protocol simplifies the recovery and recycling of sulfuric acid, which is used for cellulose deconstruction.

Abstract:Biomass valorization to chemicals is an important application of this renewable resource. This study reports the production of two versatile value-added organic acids, i.e., gluconic acid (GOA) and glucuronic acid (GUA), from biomass-derived glucose via microwave-assisted catalytic oxidation. A series of novel low-cost biochar-supported Cu-based catalysts prepared under various synthesis conditions were studied with a view to facilitate glucose conversion and improve the product selectivity by tuning the CuOx species and functionality of the biochar support. The yield of GUA and GOA could reach up to 39.0% and 30.7%, respectively, within 20 min at 160 degrees C over the CuBC600N catalysts. The enhanced catalytic performance is mainly attributed to a high percentage of Cu and Cu2O species and abundant O-containing functional groups as well as the less pi-pi conjugated area of the biochar support. The reaction pathways were elucidated by density functional theory (DFT) simulation. It is found that Cu2O and Cu sites are favourable for glucose ring-opening and oxidation steps, showing synergistic effects for oxidation of cyclic glucose to GOA and GUA. In the third run of the reaction, the catalytic performance was still 70% higher than those of bare biochar catalysts, demonstrating the importance of the CuOx species stabilized on the biochar support in catalytic activity improvement. Based on these findings, this study can provide valuable information for the design of low-cost and microwave-absorbable Cu-biochar catalysts for high-efficiency glucose oxidation.
