Abstract:Renewable energy-driven water electrolysis is considered as an environmentally friendly hydrogen (H2) production technology. Replacing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is a more effective way to improve the energy efficiency of H2 generation. Herein, a highly efficient 2D NiFeMo-based UOR catalyst and 1D NiFeMo-based HER catalyst are prepared by adjusting the concentration of MoO4‒. The MoO4‒ can serve as the key regulator to adjust the balance between the electrolytic dissociation (α) of the reactants and the supersaturation (S) to modulate the morphological and electronic structure. The prepared 2D NiFeMo nanosheet UOR catalyst and 1D NiFeMo nanorod HER catalyst can achieve a current density of 100 mA cm−2 at a potential of 1.36 V and 0.062 V, respectively. In a HER/UOR system, a cell voltage of 1.58 V is needed to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm−2. The HER/UOR system operated stably for over 60 hours with 3 times the direct water electrolysis current density. Moreover, the in situ Raman characterization coupled with XPS analysis clarifies that the addition of high-valence Mo can lower the transition energy barrier between the low and high oxidation state of Ni, which in turn lowers the overpotential of UOR. This work provides a novel strategy for synthesizing morphology-dependent electrocatalysts for different catalytic systems.
Built-in electrophilic/nucleophilic domain of nitrogen-doped carbon nanofiber-confined Ni2P/Ni3N nanoparticles for efficient urea-containing water-splitting reactions

Abstract:Transferring urea-containing waste water to clean hydrogen energy has received increasing attention, while challenges are still faced in the sluggish catalytic kinetics of urea oxidation. Herein, a novel hybrid catalyst of Ni2P/Ni3N embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon nanofiber (Ni2P/Ni3N/NCNF) is developed for energy-relevant urea-containing water-splitting reactions. The built-in electrophilic/nucleophilic domain resulting from the electron transfer from Ni2P to Ni3N accelerates the formation of high-valent active Ni species and promotes favourable urea molecule adsorption. A spectral study and theoretical analysis reveal that the negatively shifted Ni d-band centre in Ni2P/Ni3N/NCNF weakens the adsorption of intermediate CO2 and facilitates its desorption, thereby improving the urea oxidation reaction kinetics. The overall reaction process is also optimized by minimizing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step. Following the stability test, the surface reconstruction of the pre-catalyst is discussed, where an amorphous layer of NiOOH as the real active phase is formed on the surface/interface of Ni2P/Ni3N for urea oxidation. Benefiting from these characteristics, a high current density of 151.11 mA cm-2 at 1.54 V vs. RHE is obtained for urea oxidation catalysed by Ni2P/Ni3N/NCNF, exceeding that of most of the similar catalysts. A low cell voltage of 1.39 V is required to reach 10 mA cm-2 for urea electrolysis, which is about 200 mV less than that of the general water electrolysis. The current work will be helpful for the development of advanced catalysts and their application in the urea-containing waste water transfer to clean hydrogen energy.

Abstract:Electrochemical urea electrolysis holds great potential for energy-efficient hydrogen production and wastewater treatment. However, developing cost-effective and highly active catalysts remains a challenge. In this study, a novel bifunctional electrocatalyst of Ni–Zn bimetallic nanosheets (ZnO–Ni 2 P) was synthesized on Ni foam (NF) for efficient urea decomposition in urea-containing wastewater. The results showed that inactive ZnO phase acted as an "electron pump", which facilitated electron redistribution between Ni and P atoms and created localized vacancies of Ni and P cations. This optimized electronic configuration enhanced the kinetics of both the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Additionally, a unique particle-porous structure with abundant grain boundaries was achieved through the utilization of the Kirkendall Effect and Ostwald Ripening. In an alkaline urea electrolysis system, the alkaline urea electrolyzer assembled with ZnO–Ni 2 P/NF sample as both electrodes exhibited a low driving potential of only 1.424 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which outperformed the commercial noble metal-based electrolyzer (RuO 2 ||Pt/C). The results verify that incorporating an inactive phase to manipulate the electronic structure of the active phase can be an effective strategy in developing catalysts for urea electrolysis.

Low-Cost Ni2P/Ni0.96S Heterostructured Bifunctional Electrocatalyst toward Highly Efficient Overall Urea-Water Electrolysis

Abstract:Water splitting is a sustainable approach for production of hydrogen to fuel some clean energy technologies. This process, unfortunately, has been significantly impeded by the puzzles in either the efficient but economically unaffordable noble-metal-based catalysts or the low-cost but kinetically sluggish abundant-element-based catalysts. Particularly, the discovery of efficient bifunctional catalysts that can simultaneously trigger the reactions of both anode and cathode for overall water splitting still remains as a grand challenge. Herein, a novel low-cost bifunctional Ni2P/Ni0.96S heterostructured electrocatalyst, which is active for both the urea oxidation reaction at the anode and the hydrogen evolution reaction at the cathode, is innovated for high-efficiency overall splitting of urea-rich wastewater. A systematic configuration of a Ni foam (NF)-supported Ni2P/Ni0.96S catalyst electrode exhibits superior catalytic activity and stability. The Ni2P/Ni0.96S/NF||Ni2P/Ni0.96S/NF cell needs only 1.453 V to reach a current density of 100 mA/cm2 in basic urea-containing water, while it is 1.693 V for a reference noble-based Pt/C/NF||IrO2/NF electrolysis cell. This work therefore not only contributes to develop a low-cost, high-efficiency, bifunctional electrocatalyst but also provides a practically feasible approach for urea-rich wastewater treatment.
The synthesis of W-Ni3S2/NiS nanosheets with heterostructure as high efficiency catalyst for urea oxidation

Abstract:The development of efficient and stable non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts is essential for practical water splitting applications. Electrolysis of water for hydrogen production is a green and efficient method, while urea electrolysis can improve energy conversion efficiency. In this paper, W-Ni3S2/NiS catalysts with heterogeneous structures were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method using a W-doping-induced phase transition strategy. The doping of W modulates the morphology of the catalyst, which can form a uniform nanorod arrays and improve the activity of the electrocatalyst. In an alkaline solution of 1 M KOH and 0.5 M urea, W-Ni3S2/NiS requires only potential of 1.309 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2. In an electrolyzer containing urea, W-Ni3S2/NiS as both cathode and anode, can drive a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with a potential of only 1.569 V and has relatively good stability after test of 20 h. Experimental results show that the improvement of catalytic activity is due to the rapid charge transfer, more active sites exposed and better conductivity. Density functional theory calculation shows that the W-Ni3S2 material exhibits higher urea adsorption energy, indicating that urea is preferentially adsorbed on its surface. The NiS material shows more state density near the Fermi level, indicating that the introduction of this material enhances the conductivity of the W-Ni3S2/NiS material. The synergistic catalysis of the two materials promoted the improvement of catalytic activity. This work provides new ideas for the development of highly efficient and stable catalysts by means of doping and interface construction.

Abstract:Recently, urea has aroused considerable interest as a potential hydrogen carrier to supply renewable energy; thus, inexpensive and highly active electrocatalysts are desirable for efficient urea electrocatalysis. Herein, carbon-doped heterostructured Ni2P (C@Ni2P) nanocomposites are developed via a one-step hydrothermal approach with surface engineering of peapod-assisted nanorods (NRs-peapod) and nanoparticles (NPs). The catalytic activities of the as-prepared hybrids are studied with a robust emphasis on the surface structure-activity relationship. As expected, the embedded carbon matrices improve the electronic configuration of the resultant hybrids. Besides, the collaborative effects of both Ni2P and carbon platforms reduce the electron pathways and further promote the urea electro-oxidation process. In particular, C@Ni2P NRs-peapod present higher activity in terms of the oxidation current density and onset potential compared with C@Ni2P NPs, which is largely assigned to the corresponding high surface area and hence accessible electroactive centers. Moreover, the longitudinal orientation of the NRs-peapod with a preferable porous feature may decrease the charge transfer resistance and facilitate electron/ion diffusion along the electrode surface and at electrode/electrolyte interfaces, indicating their potential for future utilization in direct urea fuel cells.

Abstract:The NiFe(OH)x/MnO2 p‐p heterojunction structure with a large band difference is constructed to induce directional electron transfer redistribution (NiFe(OH)x to MnO2), promote the adsorption of reactant /intermediate, optimize the reaction barrier of the rate‐controlling step and reduce the formation potential of Ni3+ active phase to support efficient urea oxidation reaction (UOR). The development of highly efficient urea oxidation reaction (UOR) electrocatalysts is the key to simultaneously achieving green hydrogen production and the treatment of urea‐containing wastewater. Ni‐based electrocatalysts are expected to replace precious metal catalysts for UOR because of their high activity and low cost. However, the construction of Ni‐based electrocatalysts that can synergistically enhance UOR still needs further in‐depth study. In this study, highly active electrocatalysts of NiFe(OH)x/MnO2 p‐p heterostructures are constructed on nickel foam (NF) by electrodeposition (NiFe(OH)x/MnO2/NF), illustrating the effect of electronic structure changes at heterogeneous interfaces on UOR and revealing the catalytic mechanism of UOR. The NiFe(OH)x/MnO2/NF only needs 1.364 V (vs Reversible Hydrogen Electrode, RHE) to reach 10 mA cm−2 for UOR. Structural characterizations and theoretical calculations indicate that energy gap leads to directed charge transfer and redistribution at the heterojunction interface, forming electron‐rich (MnO2) and electron‐poor (NiFe(OH)x) regions. This enhances the catalyst's adsorption of urea and reaction intermediates, reduces thermodynamic barriers during the UOR process, promotes the formation of Ni3+ phases at lower potentials, and thus improves UOR performance. This work provides a new idea for the development of Ni‐based high‐efficiency UOR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:To explore efficient electrocatalysts for urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is of great significance for the reason that comparing with water electrolysis, urea electrolysis is not only a more cost-effective way to produce hydrogen but also contributes to the development of renewable energy sources. Rational design of heterogeneous structures to regulate the morphology and electronic structure is an effective method to improve the activity of electrocatalysts.Herein, a unique heterostructure of ultrathin NiCo-LDH supported by FeNiCoS4 was constructed for UOR via a facile hydrothermal followed by electrodeposition process. The electrode exhibits superior activity and stability in an solution of 1 M KOH containing 0.33 M urea, with a potential of 1.366 V at 50 mA cm−2 and excellent durability over 48 h. The outstanding performance is attributed to high conductivity of FeNiCoS4, ultra-thin NiCo-LDH and the strong interface interaction between two components, regulating the local electronic structure of active metals. This work represents an effective strategy for the preparation of an efficient UOR catalyst with promising applications.

Abstract:Urea, a non-toxic nitrogenous small molecule, is used for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. However, slow kinetics of urea electro-oxidation reaction and finding an optimal catalyst continues to be major challenges. In this study, we report the preparation of hierarchical Ni(OH)2–NiS in-plane edge hybrid nanosheets on the carbon cloth surface (Ni(OH)2–NiS-CC) as a flexible catalytic electrode by hydrothermal and electroplating processes. The Ni(OH)2–NiS-CC substrate is characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electro-chemical methods. The developed hierarchical Ni(OH)2–NiS-CC nanosheets electrode shows an enhanced electrocatalytic performance (low-onset oxidation potential, rapid reaction kinetics, and higher mass activity) towards urea electro-oxidation than NiS-CC in an alkaline solution. Counting the benefits including superior catalytic activity, conductivity and available more active sites, the hierarchical Ni(OH)2–NiS-CC in-plane edge hybrid nanosheets electrode displays urea electro-oxidation with a catalytic current of 87.5 mA at 0.8 V vs. Ag/AgCl, which denotes the remarkable electrocatalytic activity as compared with other Ni based catalysts. This simple and useful electrode fabrication method enables a new route to acquire ultra-fine heterostructured substrates for wide variety of potential applications including direct-urea-fuel-cells (DUFC) and urea-assisted water splitting.

Abstract:Urea electrooxidation holds significant promise for addressing the slow anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting due to its favorable thermodynamic potential. However, the development of highly active catalysts for urea oxidation reaction (UOR) remains challenging. To address this, a p-n heterostructure nickel sulfide/cobalt oxide catalyst grown on nickel foam, referred to Ni3S2/Co3O4-NF, composed of Ni3S2 nanosheets and Co3O4 nanoneedles supported on foam nickel, is proposed. The p-n heterojunction plays a crucial role in altering the electronic structure of catalysts, facilitating efficient charge transfer from n-type Ni3S2 to p-type Co3O4. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the built-in electric field at the Ni3S2/Co3O4 p-n heterojunction interface induces the formation of local electrophilic/nucleophilic regions, promoting the adsorption and decomposition process of urea molecules. The testing results demonstrate that the Ni3S2/Co3O4-NF p-n heterojunction catalyst exhibits excellent urea catalytic activity, requiring only a potential of 1.288 V to drive a current density of 10 mA cm−2, and displays remarkable durability over a 100-h operation period. This study presents significant insights for the design of p-n heterojunction catalysts and enhances our understanding of optimizing electrocatalyst activity through interface engineering.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Urea-assisted water electrolysis integrated by a urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an efficient strategy for energy-saving hydrogen production. However, its practical application requires catalysts with sufficient durability and high-strength reactant/product diffusion capability under large current densities. Herein, the Co0.5NiS2–Ni3S2 coral-like nanorods (Co0.5NiS2–Ni3S2/NF) of electronic structure and morphology regulation are rationally constructed. The heterostructure and sulfur vacancies induce interfacial charge redistribution, thus promoting the adsorption of urea and *OH intermediates, accompanied by accelerating the dissociation of H2O. Moreover, the hierarchical nanorod structure ensures mass transfer and gas product rapid escape. As a result, Co0.5NiS2–Ni3S2/NF only takes 1.45 V and −345 mV to reach large current densities of ±1500 mA cm–2 for the UOR and HER, respectively. Notably, the overall urea electrolysis system needs only 2.00 V to obtain 1500 mA cm–2, and it can operate stably for 120 h at 500 mA cm–2. This work illustrates the importance of regulating the adsorption energy of intermediates to design advanced catalysts for energy-efficient H2 production from urea electrolysis.

Abstract:Electrochemical urea electrolysis has merged as a promising alternative to conventional water splitting methods for hydrogen fuel production due to its cost-effectiveness and superior energy efficiency. The utilization of heterostructures has been proposed as a viable strategy to improve the efficiency of the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) by augmenting the quantity of active sites and optimizing the electronic structure. In this study, a Ni(OH) 2 /NiOOH heterojunction, referred to as H-Ni, was synthesized via a straightforward hydrothermal synthesis method. The notable performance of H-Ni in UOR is ascribed to the synergistic interaction between Ni(OH) 2 and NiOOH, which constitute the principal components of the catalyst. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the H-Ni composite is capable of modulating the d -band center, thereby enhancing the adsorption and desorption of reaction intermediates and decreasing the Gibbs free energy (ΔG) associated with the rate-determining step (RDS) of the UOR. Experimental results from catalytic performance tests indicate that the H-Ni-140 catalyst attains a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte containing 0.33 M urea at a relatively low potential of 1.341 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), thereby highlighting its superior electrocatalytic performance. Furthermore, the catalyst requires only a cell voltage of 1.78 V to achieve a current density of 100 mA·cm −2 , which is approximately 120 mV lower than that required for water electrolysis. This work presents a straightforward methodology for the cost-effective development of heterojunction catalysts.

Abstract:Introduction of high-valence transition metal in nickel sulfides is an effective strategy to boost Ni 3+ active sites, resulting in excellent OER performance. However, it is a challenge to enhance the amount of high-valence transition metal for ensuring Ni 3+ -rich specie in nickel sulfides. In this work, one-pot urea-assisted synthesis method was applied to fabricate Ni 3+ -rich W,V co-modified nickel sulfide nanohorn arrays grown on nickel foam (W, V-NiS@NF-UR1) as OER electrocatalyst in alkaline media. Urea can not only improve the crystallinity of electrocatalysts but also regulate their composition, which is favorable for the formation of the high content of W 6+ species in the electrocatalyst, consequently increasing the Ni 3+ active sites and enhancing the electrocatalytic OER performance. As a result, a small overpotential of 214 mV is required for a current density of 10 mA cm −2 by the as-prepared W, V-NiS@NF-UR1 electrocatalyst and a small Tafel slope of 69 mV dec −1 is observed in 1 M KOH. Meanwhile, the introduction of V species is also beneficial to keeping the high-valence W 6+ in the electrocatalyst during the sulfurization process. For comparison, the counterpart electrocatalysts were also investigated systematically without urea.

Abstract:Urea oxidation reaction (UOR) has been proposed to replace the formidable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to reduce the energy consumption for producing hydrogen from electrolysis of water owing to its much lower thermodynamic oxidation potential compared to that of the OER. Therefore, exploring a highly efficient and stable hydrogen evolution and urea electrooxidation bifunctional catalyst is the key to achieve economical and efficient hydrogen production. In this paper, we report a heterostructured sulfide/phosphide catalyst (Ni3S2–Ni3P/NF) synthesized via one-step thermal treatment of Ni(OH)2/NF, which allows the simultaneous occurrence of phosphorization and sulfuration. The obtained Ni3S2–Ni3P/NF catalyst shows a sheet structure with an average sheet thickness of ∼100 nm, and this sheet is composed of interconnected Ni3S2 and Ni3P nanoparticles (∼20 nm), between which there are a large number of accessible interfaces of Ni3S2–Ni3P. Thus, the Ni3S2–Ni3P/NF exhibits superior performance for both UOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). For the overall urea–water electrolysis, to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm–2, cell voltage of only 1.43 and 1.65 V is required using this catalyst as both the anode and the cathode. Moreover, this catalyst also maintains fairly excellent stability after a long-term testing, indicating its potential for efficient and energy-saving hydrogen production. The theoretical calculation results show that the Ni atoms at the interface are the most efficient catalytically active site for the HER, and the free energy of hydrogen adsorption is closest to thermal neutrality, which is only 0.16 eV. A self-driven electron transfer at the interface, making the Ni3S2 sides become electron donating while Ni3P sides become electron withdrawing, may be the reason for the enhancement of the UOR activity. Abstract:The design and construction of highly efficient electrocatalysts for overall water splitting and urea electrolysis are significantly important for promoting energy conversion and realizing green hydrogen production. In this work, we constructed a multi-phase heterojunction through a simple hydrothermal and phosphorization process. The P-doped NiFe2O4 (P-NiFe2O4) nanoparticles were uniformly anchored on the bamboo-like N-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) grown via a NiFe-alloy autocatalysis. The electronic structure and coordination environment of active species were optimized by the synergistic action of P doping, well-dispersed ultrafine NiFe2O4, and NCNTs matrix with good conductivity, enhancing their quantity and activity for electrocatalysis. Consequently, the P-NiFe2O4/NCNTs/NiFe exhibits excellent HER and OER activities with an overpotential of 111 and 266 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH, respectively. The symmetrical overall water-splitting cell using P-NiFe2O4/NCNTs/NiFe as both anode and cathode delivers 10 mA cm-2 at a voltage of 1.604 V in 1 M KOH. Notably, the two-electrode cell requires a low voltage of 1.467 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH solution with 0.6 M urea. This designed catalysts display outstanding reaction kinetics and catalytic stability. This work provides useful guidance for applying transition metal-based catalysts for hydrogen production.

Abstract:Abstract It’s highly desired but challenging to synthesize self-supporting nanohybrid made of conductive nanoparticles with metal organic framework (MOF) materials for the application in the electrochemical field. In this work, we report the preparation of Ni 2 P embedded Ni-MOF nanosheets supported on nickel foam through partial phosphidation (Ni 2 P@Ni-MOF/NF). The self-supporting Ni 2 P@Ni-MOF/NF was directly tested as electrode for urea electrolysis. When served as anode for urea oxidation reaction (UOR), it only demands 1.41 V (vs RHE) to deliver a current of 100 mA cm −2 . And the overpotential of Ni 2 P@Ni-MOF/NF to reach 10 mA cm −2 for hydrogen evolution reaction HER was only 66 mV, remarkably lower than Ni 2 P/NF (133 mV). The exceptional electrochemical performance was attributed to the unique structure of Ni 2 P@Ni-MOF and the well exposed surface of Ni 2 P. Furthermore, the Ni 2 P@Ni-MOF/NF demonstrated outstanding longevity for both HER and UOR. The electrolyzer constructed with Ni 2 P@Ni-MOF/NF as bifunctional electrode can attain a current density of 100 mA cm −2 at a cell voltage as low as 1.65 V. Our work provides new insights for prepare MOF based nanohydrid for electrochemical application.

Abstract:The energy-saving urea electrolysis integrating the HER and smart urea oxidation reaction (UOR) can supplant the kinetics-restricted oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for hydrogen generation, but is still severely thwarted by poor electrocatalysts. Herein, a tractable hydrothermal protocol coupled with subsequent nitridation is found to enable uniform growth of the Ni3N/Ni0.2Mo0.8N heterostructure microspheres assembled by the uniform nanorod arrays on the nickel foam framework (Ni3N/Ni0.2Mo0.8N/NF). The as-obtained Ni3N/Ni0.2Mo0.8N/NF catalyst exhibits multifunctional superior performance for both overall water and urea electrolysis. For HER, the low overpotentials of 55 and 65 mV can be only required to deliver 10 mA cm(-2) in alkaline and neutral electrolytes, respectively. Furthermore, for UOR a ultrasmall potential of 1.328 V (vs. RHE) at 10 mA cm(-2) occurs, which is much lower than that required for OER process. When applying the Ni3N/Ni0.2Mo0.8N/NF as anode for OER and cathode for HER, the water electrolyzer requires low cell voltages of 1.487 and 1.724 V to achieve 10 and 200 mA cm(-2), respectively. More significantly, the urea electrolyser presents ultralow cell voltages of 1.348 and 1.514 Vat 10 and 200 mA cm(-2) and remarkable longevity for over 500 h. Such impressive performances exceed most reported noble-metal-free catalysts and even vie for the benchmarking noble metal catalysts, heralding its tremendous utilitarian prospects for the cost-effective and energy-saving hydrogen generation.
Fe Doped Ni 3 S 2 Nanosheet Arrays for Efficient and Stable Electrocatalytic Overall Urea Splitting

Abstract:In environmental and energy aspects, it is important to study electrocatalytic urea splitting. Urea electrolysis has great prospects for wastewater treatment and purification, and is an efficient way to produce hydrogen energy. In this work, we fabricated the Fe-doped Ni3S2 nanosheet arrays on nickel foam through two-step facile hydrothermal method, and discovered that Fe doped Ni3S2 with Ni/Fe = 0.25:0.75 ((Ni0.25Fe0.75)3S2/NF) presented a highly efficient performance and durability for both hydrogen evolution reaction and urea oxidation reaction (UOR). More notably, (Ni0.25Fe0.75)3S2/NF only requires a voltage of 1.49 V at 10 mA cm–2 for overall urea splitting, and has excellent electrochemical stability for more than 100 h. The remarkable electrocatalytic activity can be ascribed to the Fe doping which modifies the coordination environment of Ni and optimizes the binding strength of UOR intermediates on Ni active sites. Furthermore, density functional theory calculation manifests that Fe-doped Ni3S2 exhibits higher intrinsic activity for lower Gibbs free energy in comparison with that of pristine Ni3S2. The present results demonstrate that nickel-based materials have great potential for urea electrolysis, providing significant insights into the preparation of nonexpensive transition metal electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Exploring the transition-metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts with high performance for efficient water-splitting and urea electrolysis is significant but challenging. This work presents the in situ preparation of holey NiFe-LDH nanosheets on Ni foam (H-NiFe-LDH/NF) via a one-step hydrothermal method in the presence of PEO-PPO-PEO as the soft template. The holey NiFe-LDH nanosheets provide a high electrochemical surface area, more edge catalytic sites, and abundant oxygen vacancies. Consequently, H-NiFe-LDH/NF exhibits excellent catalytic activity to oxygen evolution, urea oxidation, and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER, UOR, and HER) with good stability in alkaline electrolytes. This electrode requires an overpotential of 261 mV for the OER, a potential of 1.480 V for the UOR to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm−2 in alkaline solutions. By employing the self-supported electrode as both the anode and cathode, this electrolysis cell (H-NiFe-LDH/NF||H-NiFe-LDH/NF) gains current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2 at low cell voltages of 1.575 and 1.933 V in the 1.0 M KOH solution. After adding 0.33 M urea, the voltages to deliver 10 and 100 mA cm−2 respectively decrease to 1.418 and 1.691 V. The H-NiFe-LDH/NF electrode also shows excellent stability for water-splitting and urea electrolysis. This work not only contributes to developing a low-cost, high-efficiency, bifunctional electrocatalyst but also provides a practically feasible approach for urea-rich wastewater electrolysis.

Abstract:Developing efficient and robust non-precious-metal-based catalysts to accelerate electrocatalytic reaction kinetics is crucial for electrochemical water-urea splitting. Herein, Fe-doped NiS-NiS2 heterostructured microspheres, an electrocatalyst, are synthesized via etching Prussian blue analogues following a controlled annealing treatment. The resulting microspheres are constructed by mesoporous nanoplates, granting the virtues of large surface areas, high structural void porosity, and accessible inner surface. These advantages not only provide more redox reaction centers but also strengthen structural robustness and effectively facilitate the mass diffusion and charge transport. Density functional theory simulations validate that the Fe-doping improves the conductivity of nickel sulfides, whereas the NiS-NiS2 heterojunctions induce interface charge rearrangement for optimizing the adsorption free energy of intermediates, resulting in a low overpotential and high electrocatalytic activity. Specifically, an ultralow overpotential of 270 mV at 50 mA cm-2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is achieved. After adding 0.33 M urea into 1 M KOH, Fe-doped NiS-NiS2 obtains a strikingly reduced urea oxidation reaction potential of 1.36 V to reach 50 mA cm-2 , around 140 mV less than OER. This work provides insights into the synergistic modulation of electrocatalytic activity of non-noble catalysts for applications in energy conversion systems.
