Abstract:A simplified ML-based iterative synchronization scheme is proposed in this paper for LPDC-coded systems. Symbol timing and carrier phase are estimated in a simple way based on the maximum likelihood theory aided by hard decision obtained from LDPC decoder. The synchronized samples input to the decoder are updated when a new iterative estimation for symbol timing and carrier phase is completed. The synchronized samples are reconstructed by quadratic interpolation which is very simple and can be implemented in parallel. This approach is applied to a LDPC-coded QPSK system over AWGN channel. Simulation results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed scheme approaches that with the ideal synchronization

Abstract:This paper provides an efficient low complexity soft-decision demapper algorithm for computing the log-likelihood-ratios (LLRs) of the 8PSK demodulations in the DVB-S2 standard. The proposed method has linear complexity, avoids the multiple square operations in the classical method and reduces the number of compare-select operations by half compared to traditional LLR computation algorithms. The demapper using the proposed method has been verified on Altera FPGA.

Abstract:The Log-Likelihood Ratio(LLR) algorithm of Low-Density Parity-Check Codes(LDPC) under the Quadri Phase-Shift Keying(QPSK) modulation was studied.The initial information computation method of LDPC under QPSK modulation was analyzed.And the formulas of initial information were deduced in detail.Simulations were made for the algorithm and the result showed that the decoding performance of LDPC is fine under QPSK modulation.For example,the Bit Error Rate(BER) can reach 10-6 at 3.5 dB SNR.

Abstract:With the development of the Internet and information technology, optical fiber communication systems need to meet people's information demand for large capacity and high speed. High-order phase modulation and channel multiplexing can improve the capacity and data rate of optical fiber communication systems, but they also bring the problem of bit error. To improve the transmission quality and reliability of optical fiber communication systems, forward error correction (FEC) coding techniques are commonly used, which serve as the fundamental approach to enhance the quality and reliability of fiber optic communication systems, ensuring that the received data remain accurate and reliable. The FEC in optical fiber communication systems is divided into three generations. The first generation FEC is mainly hard decision codewords, represented as RS code. The second generation FEC is mainly cascaded code, which stands for interleaved cascaded code. The third generation of FEC mainly refers to soft decision codes, which are represented as low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. As a kind of FEC, LDPC codes stand out as pivotal contributors in the field of optical communication and have gained remarkable attention due to exceptional error correction performance and low decoding complexity. Based on IEEE802.16e standard, LDPC code with specific code length and rate is compiled and simulated in MATLAB and VPItransmissionMaker 10.1 and successfully incorporated into polarization multiplexed differential quadrature phase shift keying (PM-DQPSK) coherent optical transmission system. The simulation results indicate that the bit error rate (BER) can be reduced to 10−3 when the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) reaches 14.2 dB, and the BER experiences a reduction by nearly three orders of magnitude when the OSNR is 17.2 dB. These findings underscore the efficacy of LDPC codes in significantly improving the performance of optical communication systems, particularly in scenarios demanding robust error correction capabilities. This study provides valuable, significant results regarding the potential of LDPC codes for enhancing the reliability of optical transmission in real-world applications.

Abstract:A low-complexity scheme is proposed to realize irregular QAM formats in amplifier-less coherent optical systems. The simulation results show 36QAM and 49QAM achieve 2.32 dB and 1.9 dB gains of power budget over 64QAM at net bit rates of 650 Gbit/s and 750 Gbit/s, respectively.

Abstract:Iterative probabilistic decoding of binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes have been studied extensively. Non-binary LDPC codes have recently attracted an increasing attention. Most of the existing non-binary codes are built over GF(2(q)), and decoding methods developed for binary LDPC codes cannot be used directly with multilevel modulations. In this paper, we first extend the binary parity-check codes to the case with multiple symbols over modular arithmetic. Then, we develop a sum-product algorithm to decode this new type of codes at the symbol level. Finally, we propose an effective constellation mapping method for multilevel modulations. Error performances of this type of codes with 4-PAM, 4-PSK, and 16-PSK modulations over AWGN channels are provided. Compared with uncoded systems, the coding gain of a medium-size regular LDPC code of rate 8/9 with 4-PAM and 4-PSK modulations is about 5 dB. With 16-PSK and an appropriate constellation mapping at a code rate 3/4, the proposed code's performance is comparable to that of trellis codes.

Abstract:A novel construction method of quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) code is proposed based on the finite field multiplicative group, which has easier construction, more flexible code-length code-rate adjustment and lower encoding/decoding complexity. Moreover, a regular QC-LDPC(5334,4962) code is constructed. The simulation results show that the constructed QC-LDPC(5334,4962) code can gain better error correction performance under the condition of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with iterative decoding sum-product algorithm (SPA). At the bit error rate (BER) of 10−6, the net coding gain (NCG) of the constructed QC-LDPC(5334,4962) code is 1.8 dB, 0.9 dB and 0.2 dB more than that of the classic RS(255,239) code in ITU-T G.975, the LDPC(32640,30592) code in ITU-T G.975.1 and the SCG-LDPC(3969,3720) code constructed by the random method, respectively. So it is more suitable for optical communication systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a multi-level non-binary quasi-cyclic low density parity check (NB-QC-LDPC) coded modulation (CM) scheme to reduce the decoding complexity while maintaining and/or exceeding the super BER performance of the traditional NB-QC-LDPC CM scheme. Firstly, local optimal searching combined with the classical superposition construction is proposed to construct the required NB-QC-LDPC codes with possibly enlarged girth and less number of the shortest cycles. Secondly, by analyzing the changing trend of the BER performance and decoding complexity of the NB-QC-LDPC code defined over GF(Q) incident to Q. We find that the decoding complexity increases proportionally with the increase of Q, but the best BER performance usually corresponds to a smaller Q. Finally, by replacing the high-order NB-QC-LDPC code based CM scheme to the multi-level low-order NB-QC-LDPC code based CM scheme, the decoding complexity can be effectively reduced. Simulation results show that the designed two-level GF. (4)/GF (8) QC-LDPC code based 16QAM/64QAM CM system can perform almost the same or even better BER performance with/than the corresponding traditional GF(16) / GF (64) QC-LDPC code based 16QAM/64QAM CM system.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on the design of irregular QC-LDPC code based multi-level coded modulation (MLCM) scheme by jointly optimizing the component code rate and the degree distribution of the irregular QC-LDPC component code. Firstly, the sub-channel capacities of MLCM systems is analyzed and discussed, based on which the optimal component code rate can be obtained. Secondly, an extrinsic information transfer chart based two-stage searching algorithm is proposed to find the good irregular QC-LDPC code ensembles with optimal component code rates for their corresponding sub-channels. Finally, by constructing the irregular QC-LDPC component codes from the designed ensembles with the aim of possibly enlarging the girth and reducing the number of the shortest cycles, the designed irregular QC-LDPC code based 16QAM and 64QAM MLCM systems can achieve 0.4dB and 1.2dB net coding gain, respectively, compared with the recently proposed regular QC-LDPC code based 16QAM and 64QAM MLCM systems.

Abstract:Low-complexity decoding algorithms and ultra-high-order modulation formats are necessary to meet data rate requirements in excess of 1 Tbps. The information bottleneck algorithm has been effectively applied to the LDPC decoding algorithm in recent years, and its performance is comparable to that of the double-precision information propagation technique. However, the application of information bottleneck decoding algorithms in ultra-high order modulation forms has received little attention. Furthermore, the number of table lookups required for a single decoding loop is square to the node degree, which is undesirable for optical communications. We present a low-complexity LDPC decoding technique for ultra-high-order modulated signals in this study. First, the algorithm employs multivariate covariates to build an information bottleneck framework, which introduces the processing required for applying the information bottleneck algorithm to 1024-QAM signals and the requirement of combining higher-order modulation formats with LDPC codes. The technique makes use of a bidirectional recursive network and the symmetry of quantized information to reuse the same set of tables, considerably reducing the number of table lookup operations required in the decoding process. Constructing a coherent optical communication system with 1024-QAM signals proves that the proposed algorithm can operate effectively. The performance sacrifice of 0.2 ∼ 0.3 dB reduces the number of table lookup operations required for decoding from square to linear magnitude, which greatly reduces the decoding time required in optical communication.
An LDPC Coded Modulation Scheme Based on 16-QAM in Optical Communication Systems

Abstract:In this paper,an LDPC concatenated coded modulation scheme based on 16-QAM optical system,including the encoding and decoding algorithms,is proposed.The low complexity soft de-mapping algorithm is adopted and the ITU-T requirement of 100Gbit/s optical transmission systems is considered in this scheme.The simulation results show that when bit error rate(BER)is 10-8,the net code gain(NCG)of proposed scheme is 2.8dB more than that of RS(255,239).And its NCG is 1.3dB and0.2dB more than that of RS(255,239)+CSOC(n/k=7/6,J=8)and orthogonally concatenated BCH code,respectively,which are two of FEC schemes with similar code-rate in ITU-T G.975.1.At the same time,the redundancy of the proposed scheme is lower than that of the two schemes.On the other hand,the spectral efficiency(SE)of the proposed scheme is 3.28bit/symbol.Compared with the NCG of other schemes with lower SE,such as 4-QAM,8-QAM and 8-QAM-RS(255,239),the proposed scheme also has 3.5dB,6.4dB and 2dB additional gains,respectively.Therefore,the proposed scheme has advantages in both NCG and SE.
Enhanced Quasi-Maximum Likelihood Decoding of Short LDPC Codes based on Saturation

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an enhanced quasi-maximum likelihood (EQML) decoder for LDPC codes with short block lengths. After the failure of the conventional belief propagation (BP) decoding, the proposed EQML decoder selects unreliable variable nodes (VNs) and saturates their associated channel output values to generate a list of decoder input sequences. Each decoder input sequence in the list is then decoded by the conventional BP decoder to obtain the most likely codeword. To improve the accuracy of selecting unreliable VNs, we propose an edge-wise selection method based on the sign fluctuation of VNs' extrinsic messages. A partial pruning stopping (PPS) rule is also presented to reduce the decoding latency. Simulation results show that the proposed EQML decoder outperforms the conventional BP decoder and the augmented BP decoder for short LDPC codes. It even approaches the performance of ML decoding within 0.3 dB in terms of frame error rate. In addition, the proposed PPS rule achieves a lower decoding latency compared to the list decoding stopping rule.

Abstract:Low-Density Parity-Check(LDPC) codes are typical of preeminent performance approaching Shannon’s capacity limit.This paper studies the LDPC codes min-sum decoding algorithm,and a min-sum algorithm in QPSK modulation based on integer operation is proposed for decoding LDPC codes.All the variables are fixed length integers in this algorithm,so it is very convenient for hardware implementation.Simulation results show that its performance is close to that of sum-product algorithm whose variables are high precision floating point numbers.

Abstract:Space-division multiplexing (SDM) has been expected to support the continuous growth of transmission capacity. However, it suffers from high computation complexity that limits its physical implementations. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a low-complexity MIMO equalization method to leverage the sparsity of weights and reduce the complexity by L1&L2-regularization in long-haul space-division multiplexing (SDM) systems. The L1-regularization finds the sparse solution of equalizer filters and substitutes it for optimal solution, reducing the complexity with performance degradation. On the other hand, the L2 regularization tends to produce a smoother estimation than L1 regularization and is therefore more robust to large variance. We conduct a 39.87-GBaud QPSK coherent optical transmission experiment based on a 4-core coupled-core fiber with the transmission distance from 1206-km to 7236-km. Comparisons on the equalization performance and computational complexity show that the sparse equalizer using L1&L2-regularization achieves a 30% reduction in complexity at the similar system performance, compared with the traditional time-domain MIMO. Abstract:With the common property of the sparse structure, multi-carrier low density signature (MC-LDS) and low density parity-check (LDPC) codes can be combined into a joint sparse factor graph (JSFG) while the joint detection and decoding (JDD) algorithm could bring significant gains in terms of the bit error rate (BER). In this paper, considering the coupling character of the soft information interaction in the elaborate JSFG, we carve the distribution of the merged decoding soft information from both sides and theoretically analyze the error performance of the uplink LDPC-coded MC-LDS system. Correspondingly, not only the average BER but also the practical decoding threshold could be effectively derived for any given number of iterations. Furthermore, based on the theoretical analysis, we optimize the degree distribution of the JSFG by leveraging the differential evolution method. Finally, simulation results show that the practical threshold of the JDD receiver with the optimized code approaches the signal to noise ratio of the theoretical capacity.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the generation and transmission of probabilistic shaping (PS) 64-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (64-QAM) discrete multi-tone (DMT) signal with low-density parity-check (LDPC)-coded modulation based on two-stage bit-weighted distribution matching (TS-BWDM) in a high-speed unamplified intensity modulation and direct detection system. The TS-BWDM scheme is based on a two-stage bit-weighted inversion algorithm, which has the advantages of no complex multiplication and division operations and low hardware implementation complexity. As the key content of TS-BWDM, before FEC coding, the bit-weighted intervention operation is used to change the bit probability of a specific sequence in the parallel binary sequence. The two-stage bit-weighted inversion operation and one-stage weight-labeling bit insertion is performed for achieving the target symbol probability distribution. As a result, it does not add a significant amount of extra redundant bits. Additionally, the high-accuracy training symbols-based sampling frequency offset (SFO) estimation method and digital interpolation are used to compensate SFO. In our experiments, the TS-BWDM-based PS-64QAM DMT signals with a net rate of 157.3-Gb/s transmission over 10-km non-zero dispersion- shifted fiber can be achieved. The system performance is investigated under two LDPC code rates (3/4 and 9/10) and three PS parameter values (k = 3, 5 and 9). The experimental results show that the receiver power sensitivity and the system fiber nonlinear effect tolerance can be significantly improved compared with uniformly-distributed signals.
C-band PAM-4 signal transmission using soft-output MLSE and LDPC code

Abstract:We propose a DSP scheme with soft-output maximum likelihood sequence equalizer (sMLSE) and low-overhead (8.51%) low density parity check (LDPC) code for C-band PAM-4 transmission. In order to apply LDPC code in conjunction with MLSE, the conventional hard-output MLSE is modified to have a soft-output value by using the Max-log BCJR algorithm. The feasibility of this approach is experimentally investigated in a 56 Gb/s C-band PAM-4 system. In order to investigate the advantages of the proposed scheme, we compare the performance of the sMLSE-LDPC code to that of MLSE-RS code. Relatively, additional OSNR gain of 0.6 dB ~2.1 dB is achieved. The variation of the relative OSNR gain depends on the burst errors, which originate from the power fading effect. By using an interleaver that spreads burst errors in time, one can see that the relative OSNR gain is improved as 1.6 dB ~2.1 dB. Using the proposed scheme with the interleaver, one can see that the 30 km transmission of 56 Gb/s PAM-4 in the C-band was experimentally demonstrated.
Piecewise Linear and Nonlinearity-aware Complex-valued Decision Feedback Equalization for DML-DD Link at C Band

Abstract:Directly modulated laser with direct detection (DML-DD) is a low-cost solution for short-reach transmission, but it suffers from severe nonlinear impairment coupled by laser chirp and fiber dispersion. In this work, we propose a piecewise linear (PWL) with nonlinearity-aware complex-valued decision feedback equalizer (CDFE) scheme to compensate for the impairments in dispersion-unmanaged C-band short-reach link. By mapping neighboring symbol pair into 2-dimensional constellation, error propagation is suppressed by K-means and subsequently assist feedback equalization. The proposed PWL-CDFE exhibits 0.5dB receiver sensitivity improvement, compared with the joint PWL, feed forward equalizer (FFE) and decision feedback equalizer (DFE). With the help of proposed PWL-CDFE, 72 Gb/s 4-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) signal is experimentally transmitted over 40km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), with a BER below the 14% hard detection forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold.

Abstract:Various log-likelihood-ratio-based belief-propagation (LLR-BP) decoding algorithms and their reduced-complexity derivatives for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are presented. Numerically accurate representations of the check-node update computation used in LLR-BP decoding are described. Furthermore, approximate representations of the decoding computations are shown to achieve a reduction in complexity by simplifying the check-node update, or symbol-node update, or both. In particular, two main approaches for simplified check-node updates are presented that are based on the so-called min-sum approximation coupled with either a normalization term or an additive offset term. Density evolution is used to analyze the performance of these decoding algorithms, to determine the optimum values of the key parameters, and to evaluate finite quantization effects. Simulation results show that these reduced-complexity decoding algorithms for LDPC codes achieve a performance very close to that of the BP algorithm. The unified treatment of decoding techniques for LDPC codes presented here provides flexibility in selecting the appropriate scheme from performance, latency, computational-complexity, and memory-requirement perspectives.
