Abstract:Hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) provides an efficient way to develop low-energy free-electron radiation sources. However, the design of the HMM is limited by the plasma frequency of materials, and it is a long-standing challenge to achieve the HMM in the millimeter-terahertz wave region. In this paper, a method to construct the HMM by the waveguide metamaterial is proposed. The effective permittivity is tuned by the structural parameters, and the HMM is realized by filling the waveguide with multilayer dielectrics. The designed HMM shows a topological transition process in a wide frequency region, and the Cherenkov radiation in different types of HMM is verified. The work opens a new research pursuit toward compact and low-energy on-chip free-electron-driven radiation sources.

Abstract:Cherenkov radiation (CR) is an electromagnetic radiation emitted by charged particles traveling through a dielectric medium at a speed faster than the phase velocity of light. CR plays an important role in the fields of particle detection, biomedicine and electromagnetic-radiation source. Recently, metamaterials demonstrate their novel mechanical, acoustic, and optical properties by delicately designing the structures and materials. In metamaterials, the electromagnetic properties, such as wave propagation, coupling, and radiation, could be flexibly manipulated. Thus, it is expected that the combination of vacuum electronics and micro- & nanophotonics would result in numerous novel phenomena and effects by having free electrons interacting with metamaterials. In this paper, we firstly review the concept and generation mechanism of CR. Then, recent research advances in the CR generation by using different types of metamaterials are reviewed, including threshold-less CR in hyperbolic metamaterials, reverse CR in negative metamaterials, CR lasing based on high Q-factor metamaterials and Smith-Purcell radiation manipulation with metasurfaces. The unique characteristics and interesting mechanisms of CR based on these metamaterials are elaborated. The research and development of interaction between free electrons and various metamaterials open up possibilities for realizing novel integrated free-electron devices.
Threshold-less Cherenkov Radiation in Hyperbolic Metamaterial

Abstract:To generate Cherenkov radiation (CR) in natural medium, the electron energy threshold is higher than hundreds of keV. Even though various approaches were adopted, the high-energy electrons as high as tens of keV is still required in experiment. Here we proposed to eliminate the threshold of electron energy to generate CR with the help of hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM). The analytical and simulation results indicate that, even though electron energy is lower than 0.1keV, the CR could be obtained in HMM in a visible and near-infrared frequency region. Further, the on-chip integrated threshold-less CR source, consisted with a planar electron emitter, Au-SiO2 multilayers HMM, and periodic metal nano-slits, has been realized. It is demonstrated that, with low-energy electrons (0.25-1.4keV), the CR is generated covering λ0=500~900nm. The electron energy generating CR experimentally is two~three orders of magnitude lower than that in natural media and artificial structures. As we know, this is the first on-chip integrated free electron light source benefiting from the threshold-less CR. Although less than 1% of the light energy could be coupled to free space, the total output light power still reaches 200nW, which is two orders of magnitude higher than free electron light source by using other nanostructures.
Cherenkov Radiation from Graphene-Equivalent Hyperbolic Metamaterial

Abstract:An electron-velocity-thresholdless terahertz (THz) Cherenkov radiation (CR) based on equivalent graphene plasmonic metamaterial (EGPMs) is proposed in this paper. A hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) with hyperbolic equal frequency contours (EFC) is designed and demonstrated by periodically stacking the EGPSs, which mimics the EM characteristics of optical graphene in the THz band and can be used to imitate diverse optical graphene metamaterials. When a sheet electron beam flies over the surface, the electron-velocity-thresholdless CR will be generated since the HMM theoretically supports the infinite wavevector. The field distributions of the generated CR are analyzed for different electron energy values, and the results demonstrate the thresholdless CR phenomenon. The proposed thresholdless scheme may foster the application of the free-electron-driven integrated on-chip THz radiation source.
Enhancement of Cherenkov Radiation from the Topology Transition

Abstract:Cherenkov radiation (CR) is generated when a free electron travels through a dielectric medium at a velocity surpassing the speed of light in that medium. This traditional concept has been extended to semi-infinite scenarios by considering surface waves at interfaces, achieving phase matching between the surface wave and the moving electron, thereby exciting 2D CR. In this work, a universal theoretical model is proposed to describe 2D CR emissions. Assuming the material’s permittivity tensor, we calculate the loss probability across different topological dispersions. It is discovered that perfect alignment between structural and electron dispersions results in a radiation intensity peak at the topological transition. To validate this concept, a terahertz hyperbolic metasurface based on spoof surface plasmons is introduced. Its structural dispersion, dependent on structural parameters, can be modulated in two dimensions to induce anisotropy. A topology transition occurs when wave propagation in one direction is obstructed, leading to the formation of a highly directional surface wave. As the free electron moves above our designed metasurface, 2 D CR is excited, with the loss probability peaking at the topological transition frequency. This enhancement is observed to be up to two orders of magnitude greater than that achieved with conventional uniform gratings. Through this study, we aim to unlock the potential of manipulating dispersion topological transitions to enable more efficient electron-matter interactions and stronger electron-induced radiations.

Abstract:In this work, the nonlinear response from metallic metamaterials is characterized by a finite-difference time-domain solution to the Maxwell-hydrodynamic equations. The spatial locations of E-fields (and electric currents) are interleaved with that of magnetic fields. The electron charge is at the center of Yee grids. The current continuity equation connects Maxwell and hydrodynamic equations. For conserving total charges within metallic metamaterials, an interpolation scheme for electron density is developed. Other interpolation schemes for the magnetic field and electron velocity are also implemented, which is critical for capturing conservation laws of second harmonic radiation. The linearly and circularly polarized plane-wave sources with controlled central frequency, bandwidth, and amplitude are introduced by pure scattered field technique. For different harmonic radiation, perfectly matched layer is adopted to absorb outgoing waves at a broadband; and near-to-far-field transformation is employed to obtain far-field data. Different from existing methods, our model accurately captures the conservation laws of the second harmonic radiation from complex-shaped metallic metamaterials with versatile incident waves. Charge conservation, angular momentum conservation, and parity conservation are fully demonstrated by different numerical examples. Through exploring the conservation laws, a nonlinear Yagi-Uda nanoantenna is proposed to direct second harmonic radiation from a centrosymmetric nanoparticle. By tuning the spacing and dimensions of two lossless dielectric elements, which function respectively as a compact director and reflector, the second harmonic radiation can be deflected 90 degrees with reference to the incident pump direction. Our works pave a new way toward nonlinear signal detection, sensing, and manipulation.

Abstract:By using a phased electromagnetic dipole array to model a moving charged particle, we experimentally verified a reversed Cherenkov radiation in the left-handed media in the frequency range from 8.1 to 9.5 GHz. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of new types of particle detectors and radiation generators.
Enhanced Cherenkov radiation in twisted hyperbolic Van der Waals crystals

Abstract:Cherenkov radiation in artificial structures experiencing strong radiation enhancements promises important applications in free-electron quantum emitters, broadband light sources, miniaturized particle detectors, etc. However, the momentum matching condition between the swift electron and emitted photons generally restricts the radiation enhancement to a particular momentum. Efficient Cherenkov radiation over a wide range of momenta is highly demanded for many applications but has still remained a challenging task. To this end, we explore the interaction between a swift electron and twisted hyperbolic Van der Waals crystals, and observe enhanced Cherenkov radiation at the flatband resonance frequency. We show that, at the photonic magic angle of the twisted crystals, the electron momentum, once matching with that of the flatband photon, gives rise to a maximum energy loss (corresponding to the surface phonon generation), one-order of magnitude higher than that in conventional hyperbolic materials. Such a significant enhancement is attributed to the excitation of flatband surface phonon polaritons over a broad momentum range. Our findings provide a feasible route to highly directional free-electron radiation and radiation shaping.

Abstract:We review the properties of hyperbolic metamaterials and show that they are promising candidates as substrates for nanoimaging, nanosensing, fluorescence engineering, and controlling thermal emission. Hyperbolic metamaterials can support unique bulk modes, tunable surface plasmon polaritons, and surface hyperbolic states (Dyakonov plasmons) that can be used for a variety of applications. We compare the effective medium predictions with practical realizations of hyperbolic metamaterials to show their potential for radiative decay engineering, bioimaging, subsurface sensing, metaplasmonics, and super-Planckian thermal emission.

Abstract:As one of leading technologies in detecting relativistic particles, Cherenkov radiation plays an essential role in modern high-energy and particle physics. However, the limited photon yield in transparent dielectrics makes efficient Cherenkov radiation only possible with high-energy particles (at least several MeV). This restriction hinders applications of Cherenkov radiation in free-electron light source, bio-imaging, medical therapy, etc. Broadband enhancement of Cherenkov radiation is highly desired for all these applications, but still widely acknowledged as a scientific challenge. To this end, a general approach is reported to enhance the photon yield of Cherenkov radiation using dispersionless plasmons. Broadband dispersionless plasmons can be realized by exploiting either the acoustic nature of terahertz plasmons in a graphene-based heterostructure or the nonlocal property of optical plasmons in a metallodielectric structure. When coupled to moving electrons, such dispersionless plasmons give rise to a radiation enhancement rate more than two orders of magnitude (as compared with conventional Cherenkov radiation) over an ultrabroad frequency band. Moreover, since the phase velocity of dispersionless plasmons can be made as small as the Fermi velocity, giant radiation enhancements can be readily induced by ultralow-energy free electrons (e.g., with a kinetic energy down to 3 eV), without resorting to relativistic particles.

Abstract:We explore the near-field radiative thermal energy transfer properties of hyperbolic metamaterials. The presence of unique electromagnetic states in a broad bandwidth leads to super-planckian thermal energy transfer between metamaterials separated by a nano-gap. We consider practical phonon-polaritonic metamaterials for thermal engineering in the mid-infrared range and show that the effect exists in spite of the losses, absorption and finite unit cell size. For thermophotovoltaic energy conversion applications requiring energy transfer in the near-infrared range we introduce high temperature hyperbolic metamaterials based on plasmonic materials with a high melting point. Our work paves the way for practical high temperature radiative thermal energy transfer applications of hyperbolic metamaterials.

Abstract:Cherenkov radiation provides a valuable way to identify high energy particles in a wide momentum range, through the relation between the particle velocity and the Cherenkov angle. However, since the Cherenkov angle depends only on material's permittivity, the material unavoidably sets a fundamental limit to the momentum coverage and sensitivity of Cherenkov detectors. For example, Ring Imaging Cherenkov detectors must employ materials transparent to the frequency of interest as well as possessing permittivities close to unity to identify particles in the multi GeV range, and thus are often limited to large gas chambers. It would be extremely important albeit challenging to lift this fundamental limit and control Cherenkov angles as preferred. Here we propose a new mechanism that uses constructive interference of resonance transition radiation from photonic crystals to generate both forward and backward Cherenkov radiation. This mechanism can control Cherenkov angles in a flexible way with high sensitivity to any desired range of velocities. Photonic crystals thus overcome the severe material limit for Cherenkov detectors, enabling the use of transparent materials with arbitrary values of permittivity, and provide a promising option suited for identification of particles at high energy with enhanced sensitivity.

Abstract:In this article, the highly directive emission based on a new type of metamaterial has been demonstrated. A structure of crossed metallic strips with slots is designed. By embedding the source, inside a slab of such material, the emitted energy is concentrated around the normal of the slab based on the zero refraction principle. An antenna is constructed, and the simulation has been done on it. The results show that highly directive property is achieved. An experimental verification of this effect is given in the microwave domain, and the results agree well with the simulations. (c) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:A moving charged particle, such as an electron, can radiate light due to the interaction between its Coulomb field and surrounding matter. This phenomenon has spawned great interest in the fields of physics, electron microscopy, optics, biology, and materials science. Since the radiation generated by the charged particles strongly depends on the surrounding matter, artificially engineered materials with exotic electromagnetic and optic properties, including metamaterials and metasurfaces, provide an unprecedented opportunity to tailor the interaction between the charged particle and matter, and ultimately enable to manipulate the radiated light. In this review, the fundamentals of Cherenkov radiation and Smith-Purcell radiation are presented. Subsequently, the recent advances in the control of Cherenkov radiation and Smith-Purcell radiation based on metamaterials and metasurfaces are summarized. Finally, the applications using these two physical phenomena, including electron-driven photon sources and electron accelerators, are discussed in this review.

Abstract:Direct measurement of extremely high energy density electrons created in ultraintense laser-plasma interactions is crucial issue for fast ignition. Recently Cherenkov radiation has been studied to obtain the energy distribution of electrons because the emission angle depends on the electron energy. However in the previous studies [F. Brandl et al., Europhys. Lett. 61, 632 (2003); M. Manclossi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 125002 (2006)], the experimental configurations using a planar target raised issues of spatial overlapping among the light from the different energy electrons as well as from the other emissions, such as transition radiation. A novel prism shaped target is developed in which Cherenkov lights emitted from different energy electrons are spatially separated, realizing an absolute measurement of the energy spectrum by counting the light intensities in each observed position. The observed image clearly shows the horseshoe pattern as expected in fully three-dimensional ray-trace calculations, and the image is successfully converted into the electron spectrum inside the target. In addition, it is found from the blur of the outer edge of the Cherenkov pattern that the electrons have a small beam divergence. The calibrated energy spectrum well agrees with particle simulations.

Abstract:We give a detailed account of equilibrium and non-equilibrium fluctuational electrodynamics of hyperbolic metamaterials. We show the unifying aspects of two different approaches; one utilizes the second kind of fluctuation dissipation theorem and the other makes use of the scattering method. We analyze the near-field of hyperbolic media at finite temperatures and show that the lack of spatial coherence can be attributed to the multi-modal nature of super-Planckian thermal emission. We also adopt the analysis to phonon-polaritonic super-lattice metamaterials and describe the regimes suitable for experimental verification of our predicted effects. The results reveal that far-field thermal emission spectra are dominated by epsilon-near-zero and epsilon-near-pole responses as expected from Kirchoff's laws. Our work should aid both theorists and experimentalists to study complex media and engineer equilibrium and non-equilibrium fluctuations for applications in thermal photonics.

Abstract:Charged particles moving faster than light in a medium produce Cherenkov radiation. In traditional, positive index-of-refraction materials this radiation travels forward. Metamaterials, with negative indices of refraction, flip the radiation backward. This readily separates it from the particles, providing higher flexibility in photon manipulation and is useful for particle identification and counting. Here we review recent advances in reversed Cherenkov radiation research, including the first demonstration of backward emission. We also discuss the potential for developing new types of devices, such as ones that pierce invisibility cloaks.

Abstract:Starting from the modified Maxwell equations in Carroll-Field-Jackiw electrodynamics we study the electromagnetic radiation in a chiral medium characterized by an axion coupling $\theta(x)=b_\mu x^\mu$, with $b_\mu= (0,\mathbf{b})$, which gives rise to the magnetoelectric effect. Employing the stationary phase approximation we construct the Green's matrix in the radiation zone which allows the calculation of the corresponding electromagnetic potentials and fields for arbitrary sources. We obtain a general expression for the angular distribution of the radiated energy per unit frequency. As an application we consider a charge moving at constant velocity parallel to $\mathbf{b}$ in the medium and discuss the resulting Cherenkov radiation. We recover the vacuum Cherenkov radiation. For the case of a material with refraction index $n > 1$ we find that zero, one or two Cherenkov cones can appear. The spectral distribution of the radiation together with the comparison of the radiation output of each cone are presented, as well as some angular plots showing the appearance of the cones.

Abstract:We develop the fluctuational electrodynamics of metamaterials with hyperbolic dispersion and show the existence of broadband thermal emission beyond the black body limit in the near field. This arises due to the thermal excitation of unique bulk metamaterial modes, which do not occur in conventional media. We consider a practical realization of the hyperbolic metamaterial and estimate that the effect will be observable using the characteristic dispersion (topological transitions) of the metamaterial states. Our work paves the way for engineering the near-field thermal emission using metamaterials.
